Whenever I tell people I’m from Local Life
magazine, the reply is usually: “That’s a
great little magazine, that is...”
It’s a common refrain, but what makes us so “great”?
I think the reason is that we are always thinking of
ways to improve the magazine for our readers and
our advertisers. This month, you may notice a slight
change. We’ve tweaked the style and have launched
a brand new Events2Go section.
Over the years, we have collected news of events
in a very traditional way - mostly looking at local
community noticeboards and of course receiving
items of interest via email and, to a lesser extent
these days, by post.
Our Events2Go platform takes this a step further.
Now, you are able to upload information of events

Clubs’ field of dreams...
Work on Orrell’s multi-million pound
“field of dreams” is due to start in
summer 2018.
The site, which is currently farmland, will become
home to Orrell Rugby Club and Winstanley Park
Cricket Club after Wigan councillors gave the plan
their blessing.
Preparation work will start next summer, when the
ground will be levelled out, drained and seeded.
A fence will be erected to protect neighbouring
woodland.
The facility will contain two full size rugby pitches,
a cricket pitch and practice area and a large single
storey pavilion building to provide changing,
storage and clubhouse facilities next to the existing
scout hut.
Orrell RUFC, who have been homeless for 10 years
since their departure from Edge Hall Road, intend to
start playing home matches there from September
2019.
12-month lease at Hall Lane. It is unknown at this
stage whether there are any specific plans for the
cricket club site.
The 13 acre Winstanley Road site, next to the
college, is also owned by the Bankes family and the
clubs have now signed a 99 year lease on it.
Tony Havlin (pictured), chairman of Orrell RUFC,
told Local Life: “It’s cost around £50,000 so far and
by the end, it will stand at around £2.4m, including
VAT.
“Naturally, we are very pleased as this is something
we have been discussing for around three years
now. A lot of hard work has gone into it even before
we’ve put a spade in the ground.
“We are very much looking forward to having our
own ground again after being homeless for such a
long time and building up relationships around the

borough with other community sports clubs and
teams.”
The planning application went before Wigan
Council’s planning committee recently. In total,
there were 55 representations in support of the
plan and 42 objections.
Concerns raised included the impact on the existing
tenant farmer’s business, potential flooding issues
and highways concerns. However, as part of the
proposals, the speed limit on Winstanley Road will
be cut from 60mph to 30mph. The site would also
still technically remain part of the Green Belt.
A report from Wigan’s planning officers to
councillors said: “While the loss of the field to
the farmer is unfortunate it is a private matter
between the farmer and his landlord. The farmer’s
representatives have also advised that the field
represents just over five hectares of a total of 145
hectares farmed by his client. The existing open
storage area utilised by the farmer is to be retained

for their use and a bridle path will be provided
within the site to provide a safe off-road link to the
public footpath network.
“The speed limit reduction should also assist
in improving safety for riders and horses when
crossing Winstanley Road.”
Tony Dillon, who is leading the project from
the cricket club side, said: “We expected some
objections from people in Winstanley Road and
the farmer, but generally people have been very
supportive.
“The hard work begins now, as we launch our
fundraising initiatives, seeking sponsorship and
support from local businesses and communities.

Methodist Church site talks
Early talks have taken place over a
potential new health centre on the
Orrell Methodist Church site.
Developers have confirmed to Local Life that they
are in initial discussions with health chiefs and the
church about the future of the Church Drive site.
However, all parties are keen not to raise
expectations at this early stage, saying it is too early
to speculate on details.
Rumours have been circulating Orrell for a number
of years about potential sites for a new health
centre. So far though, the search has drawn a blank.
However, Leyland-based construction firm Eric
Wright Group, which is currently developing a new
health centre for Ashton-in-Makerfield, confirmed
they have been approached about a possible
development at the Methodist Church site.
Wayne Ashton, strategic planning manager for
One Partnerships, the organisation set up by Eric
Wright to deliver health centres across the North
West, told Local Life: “We have been approached by
Wigan Clinical Commissioning Group, Bridgewater
Community NHS Foundation Trust and Orrell
Methodist Church to hold initial discussions on the
options and opportunities on the Orrell Methodist
Church site.
“It is too early in the process to comment further on
the options and we would not want to unnecessarily
raise expectations by doing so.”

Salem set to shut
A church which has served Orrell for
over 200 years is to shut.
Salem United Reformed Church on Church Street will
hold its final service on September 24.
It comes following a meeting at the church where
members decided that it would close.
However, the decision has left many local groups who
use Salem’s hall worried about finding another home.
Church bosses are keeping tight-lipped about what
may happen to the building or the site, which is
steeped in history. (Continued on page 18)

The chapel was erected in 1804 by Richard
Woodward in the garden behind his home.
The first minister, around five years later, was John
Capper, who was employed by the Lancashire
Congregational Union. In 1820 John Holgate
became minister and he built a school by walking
to Liverpool and back making calls to collect money
for the building.
Holgate laid the foundations for the church’s
community work by inspiring the members to
provide for over 30 orphans living in the village.
Salem was originally a Congregational Church
but became part of the URC in 1972. Salem and
Richmond Hill URC came together 20 years ago to
become one church.
A spokeswoman for the United Reformed Church
told Local Life: “Following recent church meetings,
members decided that the church will close in the
autumn.
“A final service will take place on the afternoon of
Sunday, September 24, and the fellowship is in the
process of informing all of those who use the hall
for various activities. The building will close down
on a date yet to be confirmed.
“No decisions have yet been made about future
use of the site or where the church members will
meet in future. All are welcome to attend the final
service. “

Orrell’s Last Night of The Proms is
back - and organisers are promising it
will be the best yet!
A star-studded line up will take to the stage at Orrell
Cricket Club on Saturday, September 9.
Acts include Orrell-born X Factor star Olivia Garcia,
Nathan Moore from late ‘80s chart toppers Brother
Beyond and S Club Party, which includes three of
the original members of S Club 7.
Rounding off the event will be the rousing Golborne
Brass Band.
Gates will be open from noon with live music from
1pm. The car park will be closed, but organisers
are happy for you to go and drop your things off
earlier until 11am. If you have booked a gazebo
pitch, you can pitch it anytime after 11am on Friday,
September 8.
The Orrell Water Park car park is available however
the only access to the cricket club is through the
main gate at the front. Admission strictly by ticket
only – no facilities to pay on the day.

9th Scouts reunion
A Pemberton-based scout group
which folded 14 years ago is holding
a reunion.
Former members of 9th Wigan Trinity Methodist
will reminisce at St Matthew’s Parish Hall, Billinge
Road, Highfield, on Saturday, April 1.
The group, which was founded following the
amalgamation of Woodford Street, Loch Street
and Wesleyan Methodists in 1962, disbanded in
2004 because of falling numbers. But in the years
it was active, it ran a number of successful units,
including Venture scouts, beavers, cubs, scouts and
a parents’ committee. In 1976, a summer camp was
held in Luxembourg, where the 9th Group forged
a friendship in a Dutch Scout group from Ede. In
1978, they were invited to the Netherlands where
the children stayed with host families.
The cubs also had a successful football team while
the Scouts excelled in canoeing.
All ex-members are welcome to attend the reunion,
which starts at 7pm and costs £10. There will be a
Scout service at St Matthew’s Church the following

The 80th anniversary of George
Orwell’s The Road To Wigan Pier will
be celebrated over the next few days.
The Orwell Society has arranged the events to mark
the occasion. Author George Orwell came to Wigan
in 1936 and among the locations he visited was
Beech Hill.
Details of the celebration events are as follows:
Saturday, March 11: 10am - formal opening by
Wigan Mayor Ron Conway, followed by formal
response from George Orwell’s son, Richard Blair, at
Sunshine House Community Hub, St Patrick’s Hall,
Wellington Street.
Saturday, March 11: 1pm-3pm - A series of talks
about Orwell’s time in Wigan at the Museum of
Wigan Life, Library Street.

Wigan and Leigh Carers Centre is looking for
volunteers. The organisation, based in Fredrick
Street, Hindley, has a Befriending & Buddying
scheme offers a way to help combat isolation for
carers by offering them support, encouragement
and a listening ear. It now wants to swell its ranks by
adding new volunteer befrienders.

Saved by The Bell?
Green Belt in Orrell could be safe from
redevelopment in a fresh plan, it has
emerged.
Local Life understands there has been tentative talk
of removing The Bell from the Greater Manchester
Spatial Framework.
The controversial document, billed as a blueprint
for jobs and growth across the region, also includes
plans to build on Green Belt at Junction 25 in
Winstanley/Bryn.
A further round of consultation on the plan is set
to take place in September. But planners say that
could be brought forward if ‘significant changes’ are
made.
All eyes are now on the Mayor of Greater
Manchester elections in May. Whoever wins that
will have to decide whether to forge ahead with the
current plans. As it stands, farmland at The Bell in
Orrell and at Junction 25 in Winstanley/Bryn could
both see large-scale industrial redevelopment and
new homes.
Protest groups have formed in both areas and the
political fall out has already begun. Winstanley
councillor Paul Kenny was sacked from Wigan
Council’s cabinet for supporting the antidevelopment
campaigners. He has now called for
the plan to be redrawn: “The draft plan has rightly
been condemned across the political spectrum.
“It is clear to me that the current draft needs to be
ripped up and a more inclusive process developed
that allows communities to be part of the solution
to our housing and employment needs rather than
presented with unacceptable plans to obliterate
greenbelt.”
“Heavy hints about a
fresh plan”
Local Life understands that disquiet about the
plan is widespread among councillors right across
Greater Manchester’s 11 councils. This has led
to heavy hints being dropped about a potential
rewrite of the plan.
It has now emerged that, in the event of a rethink,
Wigan planners could pull The Bell as a development
area, citing access issues. However, the Winstanley/
Bryn site allocation would most likely to remain as

Feel fab at 50and beyond

Nearly half a million women in the UK will turn 50 this year - including
TV favourite-turned-fitness-fanatic Davina McCall, plus Kate
Garraway and Ulrika Jonsson.
But far from feeling past their heyday, 82% of women are winding up, not
down, as they approach 50, according to a new survey by Boots UK.
The poll, which quizzed 1,002 women turning 50 this year, suggests
we’re really embracing middle-age and beyond, with over a quarter
(27%) admitting they plan to travel and see more of the world, and
one in five (19%) revealing they’re now doing more exercise than
ever before. Exciting career aspirations were also a priority for a fifth
of women at 50, while one in seven plan to take up volunteering.
However, while in general it seems women are feeling very positive
about entering their 50s, more than nine out of 10 (92%) admit to
having concerns about their health.
“Women turning 50 now feel younger than their previous
generations, with most viewing this time in their lives as a threshold
of new opportunities and experiences,” says psychologist Dr
Linda Papadopoulos. “That said, turning 50 heralds a decade of
transition, with many physical and psychological changes on the
horizon, and there are some women who are feeling less certain
about their next life chapter.”

common health concerns
“Dropping oestrogen levels [associated with menopause] can cause hot flushes, sleep

and some women feel this helps give them relief from symptoms. Joint pain that gets steadily worse
with age can be a sign of osteoarthritis. Mild symptoms can be managed with regular exercise,

GP. Deteriorating eyesight at 50 is very common; age-related long-sightedness, also known
as presbyopia, is a natural part of the ageing process. It can be corrected easily by wearing

as you get older, so maintain a healthy balanced
diet and take regular exercise to help counteract its

“When your children leave home, the silence of
the gap left behind by what seemed like a ‘full’
life can sometimes become deafening. You may
have thought you knew yourself intimately, but
now, at this new stage of life, with the sense of
loss that children leaving home can make, old
and buried aspirations and desires now feel like
regrets or unfulfilled longings. To feel fulfilled in
your own being, develop a nurturing relationship
with your innermost self - peace and contentment
are rooted in this central aspect of who you are.
Experiment with different forms of exercise, dance,
yoga, meditation and mindfulness. Learn to paint,
perhaps do a degree. Travel across India or China by
rail. Try out different things until you find the one, or
two, that are a direct expression of ‘you’. Do things
that unleash your happy hormones.
“Whatever you do, make it something that puts you
in direct touch with your deeper nature, expresses
you, and brings you radiance and joy. Turning 50 is
nothing to be afraid of, and remember, there are
things you can now do that you may not have been
able to before, whether because of work or home
priorities. You can now embrace all the passions you
left behind.”

All the world’s a stage
David Sudworth meets the Orrell actor who is going global thanks
to Shakespeare
When Shakespeare proclaimed that “all the world’s a stage” in As You Like It
he probably never imagined someone would take it literally. But for Paul
Moss, the last few years has seen those very words come true.
Because not only has the Orrell actor set up The HandleBards, a ‘charmingly chaotic’
open air touring theatre company dedicated to Shakespeare’s works, but they’re
possibly the only ones who travel to performances in the UK purely under their own
steam.
“We basically cycle between venues; all our equipment, stage props and so on,
come with us in a couple of trailers which are hitched to the back of the bikes. We’ve
learned to travel light!” laughs Paul, who now acts mostly in a production capacity.
It’s been a whirlwind few years for the 26 year old ex St Peter’s and Winstanley
student. After graduating from Durham University with a chemistry degree, most
would have thought Paul would embark on a career related to his studies. Yet, it was
his extra-curricular activities as a student which would provide the inspiration for
The HandleBards.

Their success in the UK has led them to playing
shows in far-flung corners of the world, including
India, Singapore, Malaysia and Burma.
“Of course, we don’t cycle to those countries,”
assures Paul. “But we do try to pick up a bicycle
locally, although they are not a key part of the set.”

travel light!”
The Handlebards have also expanded from an allmale
troupe by adding a separate, all-female troupe.
In November, they made history by becoming the
first all-female theatre troupe to perform in Sudan.
Such globe-trotting means that Paul spends very
little time back in Orrell these days, although Local
Life managed to catch up with him while on a short
break here.
“My home is still at my parents Michelle and Phil’s in
St Luke’s Drive. And my mum and brother Andrew
both work at my old primary school, St James’, so
there’s still lots of local connections with Wigan.
“In fact, my fellow Handelbards colleague Tom
Dixon is from Up Holland - he grew up in Denholme
and Denshaw. We met while at Winstanley College,
although his family have now moved out of the
area.”
The idea for The HandleBards became while Paul
was studying, but the urge to perform has been
there since a young age: “There used to be a drama
club at St James’ Social Club and I did lots of stuff
at St Peter’s, where I had a really good tutor, Mrs
Ayres, and then at Winstanley, where I developed

more of a passion for dance and drama. We went to
Barcelona for a dance competition, and there were
lots of great experiences.
“Durham University has its own theatre and to
put on a show there you have to set up your own
theatre company, so that was my training. It does
teach you about the business end of show business,
which has been invaluable.
“We did a tour and around the same time, we had
some friends who were walking from Land’s End
to John O’Groats. That’s when the idea of a touring
group came into my head. Obviously, walking
between venues would be impossible but, it was
the time of the London Olympics, and cycling was a
big thing, so we decided on that. Bear in mind that
I hadn’t rode a bike since I was 12 and that was only
around Orrell Water Park. Since then, I’ve clocked up
about 5,000 miles!”

However, The HandleBards’ performances -
although true to the original text - are a more
subversive take on Shakespeare’s works. One
reviewer for The Stage magazine describes it as
‘beautifully staged tomfoolery’.

Paul and his team will be in greater demand than
ever before: “For us, this year it’s about firming up
the company so it’s a sustainable and repeatable
model. In the UK, cycling between venues is our
unique selling point. Abroad, it’s simple because
we are British actors doing Shakespeare. In India,
audiences sit there mouthing along the words -
they know the script inside out and it is fantastic.”
So far, The HandleBards are still relatively unknown
outside of the arts scene. But talks have taken
place which could see them reach an even wider
audience, including possible TV spots.
Whatever happens, no-one could claim they are
Much Ado About Nothing.

£7m business blow
A total of £7m has been wiped off the
value of business premises in Wigan
since 2013.
The shock statistic was revealed in a Wigan Council
report which outlines fears for how the cashstrapped
authority will cope in the years ahead.
It comes amid news that rents from the borough’s
markets will be £600,000 below forecast by the year
end. This is down to a combination of rent arrears,
unlet stalls and the decision to hold a rent-free
period for Wigan and Leigh stall holders between
January and March.
The report to council leader Lord Smith said:
“Business rates continues to be a major concern
as the level of appeals lodged and success rates
continue to exceed the level of successful appeals
under the previous system. Since 2013 the council
has seen a loss of £7m on the total rateable value of
businesses within the borough.
“If business rate growth is not achieved then it
becomes likely that the shortfall on business rates
will need to be met by additional efficiencies
savings as ultimately the shortfall is not tenable in
the long term.
“There are sufficient funds set aside for the next
couple of years to meet any potential shortfall but
this cannot be maintained indefinitely.”

Making tax digital
Welcome to the latest article from CMA.

What is Making Tax Digital (MTD)?
This is a government initiative that sets out a vision
for ‘a transformed tax system and the end of the
annual tax return’ by 2020. Following a period of
consultations, plans are to go ahead with an April
2018 launch for quarterly reporting for sole traders
and buy-to-let landlords.
The current plans, in brief, are:
• The smallest businesses will be exempt from MTD.
Following the review the government has agreed
to review the threshold of £10,000 currently
proposed.
• Taxpayers will send in summaries of their income
and expenditure at least four times per year.
Three line accounts will be supported for those
sole traders who want to report the minimum
information. You’ll be able to adjust these records
at your year end.
• Businesses will be able to use spreadsheets for
record keeping but may need to combine these
with some other software to submit the data.
• The government has indicated that there will be a
soft landing period of 12 months with penalties for
those businesses that don’t comply.
The pilot for a roll out starts in April 2017, and these
changes quickly follow;.

The government have indicated that free software
will be available to businesses with the most
straightforward affairs. This software has not yet been
finalised; more information to follow soon.

traders and companies. It is important to start
planning for these changes now as they will soon
be upon us. The next few years are going to be very
challenging for business owners.

Shepherd’s pie
with creamy
cauliflower
topping
Serves 6
Ingredients
800g good-quality minced lamb
8 merguez sausages (available from Ocado, or
ask your butcher)
Vegetable oil, for cooking
2 onions, diced
4 garlic cloves, grated
1tbsp fennel seeds
2tsp curry powder
2tsp cracked black pepper
1tsp ground cinnamon
4 celery sticks, tough strings removed, diced
500ml strong beef stock
A good dash of Worcestershire sauce
Sea salt
For the topping:
2 cauliflowers (about 700g each), cut into large
florets
50g butter, softened
70ml double cream
200g strong blue cheese, such as Stilton,
crumbled
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method
Preheat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/Gas 6. Place the
lamb mince in a large roasting tin and roast, stirring
three of four times to break up the mince, for 35-40
minutes until dark brown. It should look like instant
coffee granules. Bake the merguez sausages in another
roasting tin, alongside the lamb, for 10-15 minutes until
cooked through.
Tip the mince into a colander to drain. Let the sausages
cool, then cut into chunks.
Pour a splash of oil into a large saucepan and warm over
a medium-low heat. Add the onions and garlic and sweat
gently, stirring from time to time, for 10-15 minutes until
soft. Stir in the fennel seeds, curry powder, cracked
pepper and cinnamon and cook, stirring, for two to three
minutes.
Stir in the celery and browned mince. Pour in the stock
and add the Worcestershire sauce and some salt. Bring to
the boil, lower the heat and simmer for one to one-anda-half
hours, until beautifully thick and rich. Take off the
heat and allow to cool.
Preheat the oven to 190C/Fan 170C/Gas 5. Stir the
chopped sausages into the cooled lamb, then spoon
into a shallow ovenproof dish, about 30 x 22cm and 8cm
deep. Level the surface with the back of the spoon.
For the topping, bring a pan of lightly salted water to the
boil, add the cauliflower florets and simmer until tender,
about five minutes. Drain the cauliflower and place in a
food processor with the butter, cream and some salt and
pepper. Blend until smooth. Add the blue cheese and
blitz to combine.
Spoon the cauliflower topping evenly over the lamb
and sausage mixture. Stand the dish on an oven tray
and bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes until the meat
mixture is bubbling and the topping is starting to brown.
Serve immediately.

Continuing our recent, unofficial theme of
‘Places You Never Realised Are Actually Very
Pretty’, we headed over to Worsley for this month’s
outing.
Situated next to the thunderous M60 Manchester Ring
Road, it’s hardly the first place which springs to mind.
But once the din of the traffic ebbs away, it can be a
very uplifting, snap-happy stroll.
We started this walk from the Worsley Court House
pay and display car park. It’s located just off Junction
13 of the M60, on the B5211, Barton Road (postcode
M28 2PB).
Once suitably booted up, we head out of the car park
and across the main road, taking the path past the
Packet House overlooking the Bridgewater Canal

(look for the Bridgewater Dental Surgery sign). This
takes you over a small footbridge and then up some
steps which emerge on Worsley Road.
But before you get there, I guarantee you’ll have
stopped a good few times to survey the beautiful
homes nestled along the canal. The most majestic is
the Packet House itself. This Grade II listed building
dates back to 1760 and the half-timbering was
added around 1850 by the 1st Earl of Ellesmere. The
bridge nearby is known as Alphabet Bridge. It got
its name from children at a local school who used
the bridge daily and practised their alphabet on the
26 planks that made up the span. There are still 26
planks, so you have the option of keeping up the
tradition as you cross.

When on Worsley Road, we cross over and went
right until we turned in to Mill Brow by the side of
Hunters Estate Agents. Walk up the brow, which is
a bit steep, and continue until you reach the steps
that go down in front of Old Warke Dam. You pretty
much go down the steps, across Worsley Brook and
up to your right, following the path until it brings
you on to the lane.
It’s nice to see though that not all traces of its past
have been erased, for just past the bridge, you are
greeted by the platforms of the old Worsley Station,
a grand old building by all accounts made of white
brick with red and black detailing. It also had two
First Class and two Second Class waiting rooms and
a glass canopy.
Here you go straight across, taking the footpath
round and into the woods. Continue along until you
pass over the footbridge across Kempnough Brook.
Here turn right and follow the path until you reach
the Lodge (confession time; we actually stopped for
a few minutes prior to reaching the Lodge to have a
play on the rope swing we saw in the woods!)
Once you’ve unnecessarily burned off any lingering
energy you had left, dig deep and carry on. Passing
the lodge, take the foot path on your left and follow
this until you reach Route 55 of the National Cycle
Network. Once down the steps and on the cycle
path, turn right, walking towards the bridge at
Worsley Road. You’re now following the route of
the old Manchester-Wigan Railway, which closed to
passengers in May 1969.
The line, which had been in use since 1864, was
built to serve local coal pits, with stations at Leigh
and Pennington.

About 500 yards past the old station you
take the steps down to the pond and
keeping to the left continue through the
park known as Dukes Drive. The path starts
to curve right, which you follow until it
reaches the canal. At this point we opted
to go right, heading back along the canal,
but you can go left, head over the canal
bridge, and back up the other side of the
canal. Staying on our route we kept to
the footpath by the canal. This nice path
changes to a rough path as you leave
Dukes Drive, and becomes quite narrow.

You can at this point step down to your right and
follow the track that takes you all the way up onto
Worsley Road.
At this point go left, passing the lovely row of
cottages, before turning left into The Green.
This is yet another beautiful find, oozing in period
charm and elegance. From here continue down and
over to the bridge, taking in the view of the Packet
House. After a few minutes taking photos we cross
the main road and head back to the car park.
In all, this four mile walk is a real find. Not your
average Jack’s Tracks outing, but nonetheless a
worthy addition to our series. On a perfect sunny
day, it would be an excellent stroll. But even during
the worst of winter’s offerings, you could do a lot
worse than Worsley.

Worsley Green
Although a picture postcard these days, it wasn’t
always the case at Worsley Green. Until the early 1900s,
it was Worsley Yard, the centre of an industrial complex
that became busier with the advent of the Bridgewater
Canal. It included a boat building yard, motor mill,
timber yard, nail makers, wheelwrights, basketmakers
and a warehouse. It is still possible to
see the imprints in the grass where railway
sidings ran.
On the Green is a monument to
Francis, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater,
known as “The Canal Duke”. This
was constructed from the base of
the Work’s Yard chimney. It was
originally a fountain and the base
carries a Latin inscription, which
reads: “A lofty column breathing
smoke and fire. Did I the builder’s
glory once aspire. Whose founder
was that Duke who far and wide.
Bridged water through Bridgewater’s
countryside.”

Test Drive
First impressions when approaching the
new Audi Q2 are good. Like all Audis, it
manages to stand out, even if it doesn’t try anything
spectacular design-wise. In the more daring ‘Vegas
Yellow’, it makes quite a visual impact though, and
is unmistakeably Audi in appearance. The large grill
and muscular body are complimented by a sloping
roof line and contrast C-pillar which – in S-Line trim
at least – is nicely offset in metallic silver. Sadly, on
the smallest alloy wheels it looks puny, so bigger is
better there.
The interior is more of the same, being almost
identical to that which you’d find in the A3
hatchback. That’s no bad thing though, as Audi
makes some of the most pleasant interior spaces on
the market today, and feels decidedly upmarket if
it’s kitted out with a range of technology options,
such as the virtual cockpit.
Audi Q2

We tested the Audi Q2 in 150PS 1.4-litre petrol
guise. It provides plenty enough power for all types
of road, being capable of overtaking on motorways
and A-roads, yet remaining suitably quiet when
pottering through towns and villages. If your annual
mileage is quite low, this is a fine engine to go for,
as you’re unlikely to need anything more than this.
While the engine is quiet, the S-Tronic automatic
gearbox is a little jumpy at low speeds, and tends
to put too much torque through the wheels when
trying to move off. This results in some minor
wheel-spin. The S-Tronic unit has never quite been
up to the high level of BMW’s eight-speed unit, but
it is far from a bad gearbox, and, when up to speed,
works quickly and seamlessly.
Our petrol test car was the S-Line, fitted with
sports suspension and larger alloy wheels, and we
found it to be slightly too firm for our liking. Being

a ‘Q’, you get into it expecting a smooth ride, but
you get something more like a firm hatchback
than a compact SUV. We suspect Audi’s excellent
seating helps offset this a little. If the trade-off was
entertaining cornering and impressive dynamics,
we’d be content, but it isn’t exactly fun to drive
either. The steering is rather numb and it doesn’t
feel particularly settled going quicker around
corners, though it doesn’t feel out of its comfort
zone either.
Audi was keen to point out that it doesn’t skimp on
technology with the new Q2; it uses the same tech
in the fresh compact SUV as it does in its higherend
products, like the TT sports car or Q7 SUV. The
stunning virtual cockpit is an option once again,
and you can also get such goodies, such as adaptive
cruise control, heated seats, a power operated
boot, and Audi’s parking assistance system. The
problem is, almost these luxuries cost extra. Audi
has made a big deal about the new Q2 starting at
under £20,000, yet it also points out that it expects
only 10 per cent of people to buy the lowest ‘SE’
trim level. The petrol model we tested came in at
£5 over £34,000, and, even for a test car, that’s an
astonishing amount of money.
Look to spend between £25,000 and £30,000 and
you’re probably on the right track with the new Audi
Q2. It’s a high-quality product and looks great, but it
doesn’t inspire us to spend more on it than a normal

The Lump
Local gossip, gripes and goings-on
The hole truth
The First Law of Holes is one piece
of legislation which has served
me well through a world war,
marriage, strife and the countless
family parties. Namely, that when
one finds oneself in a hole, it is
rather a good idea to stop digging,
lest you make your plight worse.
Given recent events though, I’m
not sure if this useful piece of
advice has ever made its way
to the Leader’s Office at Library
Street.
It kicked off big time recently
when Winstanley councillor and
Warrington fan (we all have one
vice) Paul Kenny was sacked
from Lord Peter Smith’s cabinet
for, err..., supporting the people
who elected him as their local
councillor. See, young Paul had
the temerity to get a bit irritated
at Wigan Council’s half-baked plan
to build on Green Belt between
Winstanley and Bryn. He even
apparently went to a protest
meeting. The shame of it.
But Lord Pete of Leigh decreed
that as a member of the council’s
cabinet, Paul either had to shut up
or stand down. Not that anyone
outside the very narrow world
of politics would have either a)
known or b) cared about this
minor procedural issue, especially
in a town where the words ‘red
rosette’ and ‘donkey’ are frequently
used in tandem.
Yet the Winstanley councillor
was sacked, thus ensuring full
page coverage in the local press.
This was then followed up with
the other Winstanley councillors
weighing in to have a pop at Lord
Pete’s decision. So as if things
weren’t bad enough for Wigan’s
most foremost peer of the realm,
who clearly didn’t have backing
from some of his most senior
colleagues for this Green Belt
grab, he then made it worse by
making sure everyone then knew
about it.
A hole load of trouble indeed.
Crust justice
I have never signed
a petition in my
life and, up until
recently, wasn’t
planning to start.
Yet apparently there
is one floating around online
called “We want Galloways Pies
at the DW Stadium, Wigan on
Matchdays.” Apparently, this is
because they serve up Hollands
Pies, which are from Baxendale,
in East Lancs. Galloways, on the
other hand, was founded by
Ronald and Patricia Galloway at
215 Ormskirk Road, Pemberton
in 1971, so are a truly local brand.
So while I may snub those calls to
lend my support for regulating the
use of pesticides in Fiji (important
as it is, I’m sure), I’m tempted to
sign up for this most worthy of
local causes. And it’ll irritate the
annoying ‘health professionals’
who delight in telling us how to

our town twinning arrangement
with Angers. I thoroughly approve
of the French. They have delicious
