Houston and Killellan Kirk The fanatastic sum of £895.82 was raised by the Kirk Postie. The money has been sent to Renfrewshire Christmas lunch and this made Christmas special for so many local people. Well done and thank you. The Guild are going to be busy this month on 2nd February Grant Young will be entertaining us with his adventure around Europe by bike. This is also bring a friend night. On the 16th February Mission Aviation Fellowship will be telling us of the great work they do. On Saturday 27th we will be hosting a Daffodil Tea in the West Hall from 10.30am until 12noon. Tickets available from Guild members £2 adults and £1 for children to include cream tea/coffee. Come along and enjoy! This year the World Day of Prayer will be held on Friday 4th March at 7.30pm in Houston and Killellan Kirk. Senior Citizens are looking forward to Wednesday 10th February hearing Kate Jackson tell of her tales of cycling across Scotland. On Wednesday 24th February a Bring and Buy sale is being held this being a fundraiser for the group. They meet in the Church hall at 2pm. We will be discussing the important issues of the year, sharing news from the various Clubs and Associations, as well as garnering opinion on some constitutional items. However, please don’t think this is all serious stuff, as following the AGM we will be enjoying a fun social evening with our friends and neighbours, so please do come along. I will be holding surgeries at Linwood High, Tweedie Hall, Linwood and the Carrick Centre, Houston. We are supporting the Sport Relief Mile and holding an event in the village hall. Houston and Killellan Kirk Carnival Star Wars “May The Force 14th Be With You” on Saturday 14th May. The Force Awakens and Houston will become the centre for Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Stormtroopers and soccer ball shaped droids and many others. This is an important event in the church calendar, and we welcome all. Who will be the First order trooper Snowtrooper or Flametrooper? This is an immensely successful event within the village and a tremendous amount of hard work is put into the day, dedicated helpers and extremely generous public. It is also the time for gardeners to think about the sowing of seeds, people clearing out bric a brac, toiletries etc., In next months edition more information and contact numbers will be available. kilbarchan & lochwinnoch ..................................................... Villagers in Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch who may have heard rumours about the future of the Steeple Hall and McKillop institute, will be reassured by the commitment given by the current administration at the December meeting of Renfrewshire Council, that it has not, and will not close any of its community facilities, and is determined to enhance and improve all those facilities, a move approved despite some opposition councillors failing to back the administration. While I am seeking an accelerated programme of the work involved, the timing of and funding of these improvements and indeed others, sadly will be affected by the decision in the Scottish Government budget on the 16 December, to yet again cut funding to Renfrewshire Council. Such cuts cannot continue without having a serious impact on services, however I will continue to work to minimise the effects of these cuts, argue for a fairer deal for Renfrewshire, as well as work for the improvements to our community facilities. Thanks to those constituents who contacted me regarding the resurfacing work on Burntshields Road Kilbarchan, which was completed just before Christmas. This has been long awaited, but has been welcomed by those who regularly use the road, and who had made previous representation to me. Congratulations to Carrie McIntyre Renfrewshire South Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament and her colleagues, for their successful campaign assisted by Hugh Henry MSP, in getting McGills buses to remove their evening curfew on young peoples travel tickets. which are now valid up to 10pm. Thanks also to McGills for responding positively to the campaign. Kilbarchan Parish Church We extend a warm welcome to join us at either our Sunday service at 11am or our Midweek Fellowship on a Wednesday morning at 10.30am. On a Sunday morning the Rev Stephen Smith, our minister, conducts worship in the Church building off Steeple Square and Crèche and Junior Church meet in the hall at 10.45am. All children from babies to 11years old will be made most welcome. On a Wednesday morning we meet in the small hall from 10.30am for tea, coffee and chat followed by a short informal service at 11am, taken either by Stephen or one of our worship leaders. The Guild has two meetings during February, both at 2.30pm in the church hall. On Tuesday 9th February we welcome other Guilds and Fellowship groups to join us when we will be entertained by the Comrie Singers. On Tuesday 23rd February Commissioner Banks of the Salvation Army will tell us of his work as an Airport Chaplain. During the week many other groups meet in the church halls – Tots Club, Men’s Club, Stitching Group, Country Dance Group, Badminton Club and all sections of the Boys’ Brigade. If you are interested in any of these, details can be found on our website - kilbarchan-kirk.btck.co.uk Kilbarchan Old Library Centre www.advertizer.co.uk february 2016 Kilbarchan Hill Organ Demonstration Come and hear one of Scotland’s best Church organs before it is too late. Kilbarchan East and West Churches united to form Kilbarchan Parish Church in December 2015, using the former East Church. The organ in the former West Church is one of the finest Church organs in Scotland. Built in 1904 by William Hill and Son, it remains today with very few alterations; it has three manuals and 38 speaking stops. The instrument is listed by the British Institute of Organ Studies (BIOS) as Grade 1, the largest Grade 1 listed instrument in a Church in Scotland, and the only working Grade 1 instrument in the Paisley area. It is hoped a new home can be found for the organ. On Saturday 13th February, at 2.30pm, Tom Ferguson, organist there from 1979 till 2015, will talk about and demonstrate the organ. All organists and everyone interested in the organ is very welcome to come and hear this wonderful instrument. There will be an opportunity at the end for organists to try the instrument. How about a New Year with a new start with a resolution which you can joyfully keep? Most importantly something which gives you pleasure. Kilbarchan is exceptionally well provided with many opportunities on offer. It may be that you already are part of a group and have a very satisfying programme. However, if you are thinking about a new beginning why not visit the Old Library. Stop this happening again The Centre is a community facility run for everyone by Kilbarchan Improvement Projects (KIPCo). Many people will remember the history of the formation of Kilbarchan Improvement Projects (KIPCo). When the Authority decided that the Kilbarchan Library had to close there was an enormous protest and appeal by Kilbarchan residents. This was to no avail. The Community Council decided to request that the building should remain in use by residents of Kilbarchan and surrounding area. On the submission of a business plan the Renfrewshire Council agreed. One of the conditions required by the Council was that a company had to be legally created. KIPCo was formed in 2001. The Company is a registered Scottish Charity and a Company Limited by guarantee. KIPCo is made up of a group of Directors and a team of helpers. The Old Library Centre building belongs to Renfrewshire Council with the maintenance, running costs and funding KIPCo’s responsibility. We are extremely grateful to the number of people, many of whom have been donating since 2001, who contribute annually to help finance this facility. Lilias Day 2016 Preparations are well underway for this year’s Lilias Day taking place on Saturday 4 June. The event continues to provide fundraising opportunities for good causes and organisers are currently inviting applications from charities and local organisations to take a stall on the day. A Stall Holders Evening has been organised for Tuesday 15th March, 7pm, at The Old Library Centre, Kilbarchan with a 10% discount on stall prices being offered to those booking on the night. Local organisations and individual streets in the village are once again being invited to join in the fun by theming and decorating a parade float as part of the parade. Demand for floats has been high in the past and they are currently being allocated so get in touch by emailing the committee on info@liliasday.co.uk 2016 fundraising efforts begin with a Quiz Night on Saturday 12th March (venue to be confirmed). Following the success of last years’ big prize raffle another £1000 will be up for grabs for the top prize winner this year. Raffle tickets will be available to buy in the countdown to the event.
