Steroids<br />
• Methylprednisolone (Medrol®) and prednisolone (Flo-Pred®,<br />
Prelone®) help treat the IH <strong>in</strong> at least 4 out of every 10 children.<br />
• Triamc<strong>in</strong>olone (Kenalog®) may help treat the IH <strong>in</strong> at least 5 out of<br />
every 10 children, but more research is needed to know this for sure.<br />
• The beta-blocker popranolol (Hemangeol) works better than<br />
steroids to treat IHs.<br />

• Low blood sugar (may also keep<br />
symptoms of low blood sugar from<br />
show<strong>in</strong>g up)<br />
• Changes <strong>in</strong> the way the body uses<br />
glucose (sugar)<br />
• High blood pressure<br />
• Increased risk of <strong>in</strong>fection<br />
The triamc<strong>in</strong>olone (Kenalog®) shot<br />
can also cause:<br />
• Changes <strong>in</strong> sk<strong>in</strong> color<br />
• Th<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the sk<strong>in</strong><br />
* Because timolol (Timoptic-XE®) is put on the sk<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>stead of taken by mouth or as a shot, it may cause fewer side effects.<br />
