We’re Alex and Evelyn – the Co-Founders of <strong>Conseneca</strong> – a company that was built to take the<br />
complexities out of exporting to the Chinese market.<br />
We made this company in response to a huge amount of de-regulation from the Chinese central<br />
government from 2015 onwards – specifically in respect to the Shanghai Free Trade Zone - as well<br />
as the rapid rise of e-commerce in China.<br />

Our Thoughts on China<br />
China is Big<br />
We will not spend a great deal of time in this<br />
report regurgitating facts about the size of the<br />
Chinese economy, however we would like to get<br />
across two points which we think are important<br />
to know. These are below<br />
Fact 1: China is Big<br />
consumers is evident from this year’s Singles<br />
Day Festival where Alibaba recorded total<br />
mobile sales of nearly USD $15bn, representing<br />
82% of total sales in 2016 – and a 50% increase<br />
in mobile sales from the previous year.<br />
Fact: In 2019 over 70% of items purchased<br />
online will be done so through a mobile<br />
device.<br />
China’s retail market is already the largest in the<br />
world. By 2022 it will be larger than Europe and<br />
the USA combined.<br />
Fact 2: And it will continue to grow<br />
Measured in USD, China’s income per person<br />
is 15% of the average American. In the next 20<br />
years China will not reach the same income per<br />
capita as the United States or Europe, but it is<br />
likely to achieve the same income per person<br />
as middle income countries such as Argentina,<br />
Russia or Malaysia. For the average Chinese<br />
citizen to have the same USD income as the<br />
average Russian China’s economy has to more<br />
than double in size.<br />
The rise of M-Commerce<br />
The size of the Chinese market is not the<br />
only thing that makes it attractive to foreign<br />
companies; smartphone penetration in China<br />
has gone from (x% in 200x to being full<br />
saturated in 2017. This has rapidly transformed<br />
the way consumers purchase products –<br />
transforming e-commerce into mobile commerce<br />
(m-commerce).<br />

Marketing Strategy<br />
Starbucks opened its first store in China in<br />
2002, Burberry – the world’s largest fashion<br />
house opened its flagship store’s in Beijing and<br />
Shanghai in 2010, so although rapidly changing;<br />
foreign brands are still something of a novelty for<br />
the vast majority of Chinese.<br />
This, combined with the lack of government<br />
regulation and consumer protection in regards to<br />
the quality of products means that the Chinese<br />
consumer still puts a huge premium on foreign<br />
brands; because they are perceived better<br />
quality and also a new and exciting thing.<br />
Because off the above, if a domestic Chinese<br />
company can convince consumers it’s a foreign<br />

brand – they are able to charge a premium on<br />
their products. Lack of government oversight and<br />
regulation does not stop hundreds of Chinese<br />
companies attempting to do this; wander into a<br />
Chinese mall you will see a number of brands<br />
with an English or French names and foreign<br />
branding. If you Google this name you will find<br />
that the brand does not exist outside of China.<br />

As Chinese consumers are becoming wary of<br />
domestic Chinese companies pretending to be<br />
foreign they are doing two things more than their<br />
western counterparts.<br />
Firstly, Chinese consumers research before they<br />
buy; in a KPMG survey in 2016 over 65% of<br />
respondents went online to search for reviews<br />
and recommendations to research products<br />
before they purchased them compared to just<br />
28% of US consumers.<br />

Fact: Compared to last year, the number of<br />
Chinese consumers who bought a product<br />
after seeing it in an online shop increased<br />
from 19 percent to 42 percent this year.<br />
Similarly, 31 percent of consumers were<br />
triggered by something they saw in a<br />
physical shop, up from 24% last year.<br />

Signature Service: Nanjing Xi<br />
Lu – Pop-up Shop<br />
The 2016 Chinese Consumer Survey found that 32%<br />
(2015: 24%) of consumers made a purchase online<br />
after being triggered from seeing something in a<br />
physical store. Having an offline presence where<br />
buyers can touch, feel and experience the products<br />
is increasingly important.<br />
As proof of this trend, some online platforms have<br />
started to launch pop up-shops in malls or cooperate<br />
with physical stores to give buyers a real<br />
world experience.<br />
<strong>Conseneca</strong> has negotiated a deal with the local<br />
government in Shanghai to operate a pop-up shop<br />
on the busiest and most famous shopping street in<br />
China – Nanjing Road ( 南 京 西 路 ). The street has its own<br />
Wikipedia page and is well known throughout China.<br />
The pop-up shop is next to the busiest metro station<br />
in Shanghai – West Nanjing Road ( 南 京 西 路 )– in the<br />
heart of Jing’An District – the wealthiest district in<br />
Shanghai.<br />
We use this pop-up shop as a way to promote the<br />
brands we work with offline. Are you interested in<br />
selling goods to China but don’t want the risk of<br />
opening a store or the lack of control by signing up<br />
with a 3rd part agent.<br />

Trade Fairs<br />
One would think that advances in social media and technology would have spelt the downfall of<br />
traditional Trade Fairs and Conferences as a method to form future business relationships, but in China,<br />
this could not be further from the truth.<br />
Due to its cultural differences history and its current political set up, China, like no other, is a country that<br />
is ran on personal relationships. Having face-to-face contact and building a good relationship is the key to<br />
success in the Chinese market regardless of the industry. Relationship is called “ 关 系 (guanxi)<br />
For the reason above, 88% of business executives in China stated that trade shows are “an important part<br />
of the product sourcing and buying process.” In the same survey, 91% of those polled stated that these<br />
events “are essential for comparing products and meeting suppliers in person.”<br />
Our team can represent your company on your behalf at a trade fair in China and either follow up leads<br />

WeChat<br />
WeChat – an application which many outside of China will not have heard of is an app like no other. It has<br />
over 800 millon active monthly users in Mainland China and in 2016 processed payments worth $550<br />
billion USD – an amount larger than the entire Swedish economy.<br />

Weibo<br />
Can you imagine going home at night, logging onto Facebook and then spending a considerable amount<br />
of time, talking with strangers about your experience of a certain foreign brand? No?<br />
Well this is what many Chinese consumers spend a lot of their time doing.<br />
Put yourselves into the shoes of the average<br />
Chinese citizen. Their country was effectively<br />
closed off from the world for the last 60 years.<br />
Gradual steps were taken to open up the country<br />
during the mid 90’s.<br />
WeChat’s application has been built around its<br />
instant messaging function wheras Weibo is an outand-out<br />
social media platform in China. With 300<br />
million monthly users – it is also its most popular<br />
application – with 90% of those connecting to<br />
Weibo via a mobile device. Weibo<br />
The primary goal of Facebook is to connect with<br />
and interact with existing and new friends. This is<br />
different in China, where Weibo – the dominant<br />
social media application is used primarly by its<br />
users to read news and other interesting content.<br />
