For the past 70 years, we have served as a beacon of hope and healing for children and
families from across our state. Everything we do is influenced by our mission, treating those
most in need.

children’s hospital that will be a premier destination for high-quality, advanced pediatric care.

Ensuring a Healthier Future for Louisiana’s Children
To date, we have raised over $38 million
in philanthropic support towards our $50
million capital campaign goal. We are
sincerely grateful to the many donors from
across Louisiana who have joined with us to
ensure a healthier future for our children.
Building this hospital will have a lasting
impact on Louisiana’s families and will
enable children to receive excellent care
close to home.
These highly-trained physicians will join
a robust roster of more than 70 pediatric
specialists who are treating children with
complex conditions every day. As we
continue to build our statewide presence,
we have expanded access to our pediatric
specialists through satellite clinics in
Gonzales, Hammond, Lafayette, and Monroe.
Whether they need the expert care of
our hematology-oncology specialists in
the St. Jude Affiliate Clinic or they come
to our Pediatric Emergency Department
with life-threatening injuries that only
our experienced critical care team can
address, our children’s hospital provides
comprehensive medical care that is
unparalleled in our region.
Our pursuit of this vision has served and
will continue to serve as a catalyst in
attracting top-tier pediatric specialists.
We have recruited and will continue to
recruit pediatric specialists in subspecialties
including developmental pediatrics,
emergency medicine, gastroenterology,
hematology-oncology, infectious disease
and pulmonology. We are on track to bring
20 new specialists on board by the time the
new hospital opens.

from Ascension parish in our
inpatient facility, outpatient clinics
and emergency room. More than
70% of families we serve are
underinsured or on Medicaid.

Advancing Pediatric Care
Severely-injured children often require the
attention and expertise of multiple pediatric
specialists. An excellent example of how we
meet these children’s needs is our Cleft and
Craniofacial Team.
In 2010, we began building a team of
specialists who could treat children with
cleft lip, palate and craniofacial anomalies.
Since then, our Cleft and Craniofacial Team
has grown into a multidisciplinary group
of physicians and healthcare professionals
coordinated through a partnership between
the LSU Department of Otolaryngology-Head

This diverse team includes geneticists, neurosurgeons, oral surgeons, orthodontists,
pediatric dentists, pediatricians and plastic surgeons as well as audiologists, speech language
pathologists and social workers. Working together, the team coordinates the medical care of
children while also supporting them emotionally and socially.
In January 2016, the Cleft and Craniofacial Team earned full approval from the American Cleft
Palate-Craniofacial Association and became the only team in the Baton Rouge area to earn
this national designation.

A Gonzales Teenager’s Journey: Taylor Mangus
In October 2011, Taylor Mangus, then a fifteen-yearold
sophomore at East Ascension High School, was
diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at
Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. The very
next day, she went to St. Jude Children’s Research
Hospital in Memphis to begin her first treatment.
Thanks to the clinical partnership between Our
Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital and St. Jude,
Taylor was able to come back home and receive her
full two-year treatment in Baton Rouge. Our Lady
of the Lake Children’s Hospital is one of only eight
clinic affiliates of St. Jude in the nation and this
clinical partnership enables patients like Taylor to
receive world-class treatments and protocols close
to home.
During Taylor’s senior year, she returned to school
and was nominated Homecoming Queen. In
addition, she was accepted to Southeastern
Louisiana University with a full scholarship.
Today, Taylor has been cancer free for three years.
She is a sophomore at Southeastern, and she
wants to become a nurse to help kids like her. As
a member of Phi Mu Sorority, she also supports
Children’s Miracle Network, of which Our Lady of
the Lake Children’s Hospital is a partner.

week she would go to Our Lady of the Lake
to check her blood counts and levels. I was
impressed with how well she handled this.
The experimental drug worked. She’s doing
well and cancer free.”

Educating The Best and The Brightest
Our Pediatric Residency Program provides
an innovative training ground for tomorrow’s
medical practitioners. Launched in 2010,
our Pediatric Residency Program helps to
continuously feed the pipeline of physician
development in Louisiana.
In July 2016, the program’s seventh class of
pediatric residents began their training and
joined upper-level residents at our children’s
hospital. Our Pediatric Residency Program is
a strong indicator of the depth and breadth of
clinical experience that brings new physicians
to our region, and specifically to our
children’s hospital. Currently, the Pediatric
Residency program has 33 residents spanning
three years of training.
Our pediatric residents have gone on
to enroll in some of the nation’s most
prestigious fellowship programs at
institutions including The Children’s Hospital
of Philadelphia, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
and Duke Children’s Hospital and Health
Center, to name a few.
With more than 70% of medical residents
remaining within 70 miles of where they
completed their training, our Pediatric
Residency Program helps attract the best and
brightest minds to treat Louisiana’s children.
One of our residents, Dr. Andres Carrion,
went on to complete a pediatric pulmonary
fellowship and has recently returned to
join our pulmonology team. Pediatric
pulmonologists are crucial in treating
premature infants and children with chronic
lung diseases as well as acute problems
like asthma.

residents at Our Lady of the Lake, and I had the opportunity
to come back after finishing my fellowship training. It was
not a hard decision to join the children’s hospital team once
again. I could not be more excited about the creation of
a freestanding hospital. Baton Rouge is a city filled with
wonderful and caring people, and with the new hospital, we
will continue to serve the community with the excellence that
distinguishes Our Lady of the Lake.”

Breaking New Ground
Under a bright, blue sky in February 2016, we celebrated the Groundbreaking for our new
children’s hospital. Community leaders, donors, physicians, team members and patients from
across Louisiana participated in this exciting milestone.
*Site work and drainage excavations are complete and the steel work is underway for the
$230 million children’s hospital project.
