4TH YEAR PROJECT
For my penultimate year individual project I
developed a touchpad that was able to time
multiple swimmers during a training session.
The project involved researching along side
my swim-team and various trainers across
Glasgow. The final solution involved a
band with an RFID sensor, and a Bluetooth
enabled touch-board and app.
During the development of the project, I
made prototypes of the bands for swimmers
to wear, and a proof of concept arduino
powered prototype. I also created a android
app using MIT’s App Inventor 2.
PROJECT
POKEMON GO AND EARLY PROTOTYPES
The aim of this design project was to reduce
household food waste. After selecting a target
audience, I created Persona’s, an Experience
map and identified key themes.
The designed product aims to reduce
household food waste by keeping track of
what is in your cupboards/fridge at home to
help users remember what they already have
in the house when they head to the shops.
To increase user engagement, the concept of
tracking and disposing items in your ‘virtual
pantry’ was integrated into an Augmented
Reality game, similar to Pokemon Go!
FFP3 MASK REDESIGN
Working with the NHS and Health Protection
Scotland (HPS), our group created a ‘onesize
fits all’ redesign of the FFP3 mask. A
window was also incorporated into the mask,
making it less intimidating to young children
and improve communication, both through
lip reading and through showing the facial
expressions of the user.
FINAL PRESENTATION PROTOTYPE
Throughout the project, prototyping
techniques such as foam mock-ups, vacuum
forming and 3D printing were utilised to
model potential mask shapes and present the
potential designs to the client. Contamination
tests were carried out to assess the viability
of the forms.
Seal
A thermoplastic seal
can be heated prior
to being fitted which
then moulds to the
users face.
One Pull
The bottom strap
has a single pull
mechanism which
tightens around the
chin.
Valves
Valves on either side
of the mask release
the excess pressure
when exhaling.
Metal Pinch-strap
User research showed many users preferred
masks with pinch-straps, saying the often
make the mask feel more secure, it also
helps keep the shape of the thermoplastic
after forming
Straps
Window
A clear PVC window
aids communication
between user and a
colleague or patient.
Nose Strip
The metal nose strip
flexes to hold the
masks shape, and is
a form of reassurance
for the user.
Thermoplastic Inserts
Thermoplastic inserts sewn in around the
mask (in the blue area) when heated are
easily moulded to a large variety of faces
The straps are stapled into the masks, run
behind the ear and through a channel at the
bottom of the mask to the toggle.
So the strap does not have to pass through
a seal the channel is outside the “clean” area
created by the mask
62°C
Exhale Vents
When the user breaths out these vents allow
the humid air to leave the sealed area inside the
mask, reducing discomfort.
Cord Lock
The pull-down cord lock allows the user to
evenly tighten the mask straps in one easy
movement.
5TH YEAR PROJECT
Still in progress, at the time of writing I have
just completed the research and analysis
stage of my final year individual project.
The project aims to increase the number of
commuter and everyday casual use cyclists
wearing bike lights. Using Human Centred
Design I sought to analyse the behavioural
patterns of cyclists who chose not to wear
bike lights.
The proposed solution is an integration with
a charging cable, and is currently under
development. If you would to learn more
about the work in progress, don’t hesitate to
I have been heavily involved in sport my whole life, especially at university,
taking part in a number of sports, most notably swimming
and rowing. I currently compete with the men’s senior eight for SUBC,
and this year alone have taken home three medals for the swim team,
MANIFESTO
as well as reaching finals at BUCS short course. I have competed
at a National level for swimming, and am both a qualified coach and
teacher, skills which I have utilised while helping run training sessions for the swim team. Sport
has been the biggest part of my life at University and given me so much. I am ready to give back.
My Plans
• Address the issues involving sports kit, possibly changing
provider and ensuring that kit is high quality and
distributed as early as possible in the first semester
• Increase Sports Union Funding
• Increase competitive participation within clubs and
reward clubs for competitive achievements
• Increase BUCS rankings
• Encourage healthy and well-rounded lifestyles
• Ensure that all issues faced by clubs are addressed
fairly and promptly
• Boost sports union membership by endeavouring
to make it more attractive to those outside of the
sports union
• Raise the question of purchasing minibuses if
economical
