Vision – Support – Challenge
The Army Leadership Code is underpinned by three concepts:
Vision
Leaders must provide clear and unifying
purpose, generating a sense of team
cohesion and direction. The vision can be
expressed by both communication and by
role modelling.
Support
It is only possible to inspire greatness
when there is mutual knowledge and trust
within the team. By being fair, consistent
and showing confidence in others, leaders
provide a platform for their people to
excel.
Challenge
People only reveal their true potential when
challenged. Leaders must not only test
themselves, but challenge their people.
Obviously a balance is required. Driving
too hard will damage morale; the key is to
identify achievable ‘stretch targets’. Through
this, individual and team confidence is
enhanced, enabling them to achieve more
than originally thought possible.
