Goal Setting
Goal setting is a versatile and effective coaching tool to focus
attention in order to improve an individual’s or team’s performance.
Breaking down long-term objectives into short-term goals allows
for immediate improvements in performance to be identified,
resulting in increased motivation.
When setting goals, the following principles should be applied:
Specific
When a goal is clear and specific there is no misunderstanding about
what is to be achieved. A clear target to aim for is more motivational
than a general ‘do your best’ style of encouragement.
Measurable
There should be a standard by which to measure whether the goal has
been achieved, in order for improvement to be confirmed.
Achievable
Goals must be challenging but achievable. Failure to achieve a goal
can have a de-motivational effect. Ensure that the goal is within the
individual’s or team’s capabilities.
