2 WRITING ON THE MOON land where images, feelings, and reveries glide through, waiting to be caught. Dreams offer us transcendence. Vincent van Gogh said, “I dream my painting and then paint my dreams.” Just when we think a dream is forever fixed in our memory, in a flash the dream can vanish. A great example of the fleeting power of the dream as poetry can be seen in the work of the nineteenth-century romantic poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Among his finest lyric poems is Kubla Khan. Coleridge awoke from a dream with a vision of a place like Xanadu, the summer palace of the emperor of China. He immediately wrote the first few hundred lines that he vividly recalled. Unfortunately, he was interrupted by a visitor from another town. And when Coleridge returned to his poem an hour later, the remaining 200 to 300 lines had vaporized, and were lost forever. However, what remained has become one of the greatest romantic poems in the English language. One can only wonder what might have been written if the visitor had not stopped by that day. The following dreams share poetic visions, and fresh metaphors as individual as a fingerprint. Readers are invited into the most private places of someone else’s soul. * * *
DREAMS AS POETRY 3 LOU REED IS DEAD SUSAN OBRECHT, LCSW Lou Reed was a member of the Velvet Underground and wrote Walk on the Wild Side. In his wild days, he swung sexually both ways and hung out with David Bowie and Andy Warhol. In his later years, he married Laurie Anderson. By that time, he lived in the West Village. He began following Buddhism and a more serene lifestyle. A liver transplant went wrong and he died in October, 2013. Memorial to be held At their Victorian beach house. Expansive yellow exteriors. Cerulean blue trim Languid blonde models pose-lounge on the vast porch. I turn to see my husband rushing down a grey city sidewalk The flowers I requested in hand. Sharp focus on crimson marigold. Head snapped Dangles. Hurry, instead, to a greenhouse (grateful, my beloved, for your indulgence). Choose a pot of ivies To plant in the widow’s back garden. We return to a final rite. Lou’s ashes steeping in a teapot. As the smoke drifts up into the bright sky Our circle breathes deep To take in a little bit of him.
