DREAMS AS POETRY 3
LOU REED IS DEAD
SUSAN OBRECHT, LCSW
Lou Reed was a member of the Velvet Underground and wrote Walk on the Wild
Side. In his wild days, he swung sexually both ways and hung out with David
Bowie and Andy Warhol. In his later years, he married Laurie Anderson. By that
time, he lived in the West Village. He began following Buddhism and a more serene
lifestyle. A liver transplant went wrong and he died in October, 2013.
Memorial to be held
At their Victorian beach house.
Expansive yellow exteriors.
Cerulean blue trim
Languid blonde models pose-lounge on the vast porch.
I turn to see my husband rushing down a grey city sidewalk
The flowers I requested in hand.
Sharp focus on crimson marigold.
Head snapped
Dangles.
Hurry, instead, to a greenhouse
(grateful, my beloved, for your indulgence).
Choose a pot of ivies
To plant in the widow’s back garden.
We return to a final rite.
Lou’s ashes steeping in a teapot.
As the smoke drifts up into the bright sky
Our circle breathes deep
To take in
a little bit
of him.
