Welcome to your local magazine
Dear neighbours
I can't quite believe it's three years since I
published the first edition of E9 Magazine. It's
changed a bit since then... not least the title. What
became LoveEast continues to evolve and is a
very different magazine to the one that dropped
through letterboxes back in 2014.
The biggest change was the design. Ilka Dickens
did me proud there, and she continues to forge
ahead with her beautiful creations. You can see
more of her and other makers' work at the Urban
Makers' pop-up shop at Fount London (see p21).
It would be great to get some feedback from
readers, so please do drop me a line if you feel
the urge to tell me what you like or what you'd like
to see in future editions.
A fitting gift to celebrate LoveEast's third birthday
is our involvement with the #Artskickers Awards.
This is the amazing brainchild of Angie Gough
(aka @TheArtsCrusader), and its mission is to big
up individuals and organisations who are doing
fantastic things to engage people with the arts in
East London. Head over to p13 to read all about
how to enter, who the judges are and what's in
store for the lucky winners. Best put your skates
on, though, nominations close on 6 March.
Sophie Baggott meets Julian Woodford, author of the
thrilling crime biography The Boss of Bethnal Green
Image: George Woodford
Cast aside Sherlock, there's
a sharper detective in town –
historian extraordinaire Julian
Woodford.
Not only has he exposed the
East End's vilest gangster –
Joseph Merceron, who hid in
history’s shadows until now –
but Julian has also tracked down
long-lost relics (including a
pistol, pictured above, fired in a
royal assassination attempt).
What’s more, he has that vital
ounce of empathy missing in
Baker Street's has-been.
Best of all, Julian hasn't left it to
a mere sidekick to record his
findings. No offence, Watson.
Julian has laid bare his
research in a thrilling
biography: The Boss of Bethnal
Green.
“The more I found out about
Merceron, the more I realised
how truly evil he was,” Julian
says.
Merceron, aka the
“Boss”, was born
in 1764 to a
pawnbroker
and property merchant. The
1800s saw him evolve from a
greedy landlord into a parish
“blood-sucker”, with exploits
ranging from bullock-racing to
stripping a severely disabled girl
of all she owned.
Ultimately, after decades of
milking poor relief funds as a
local government treasurer,
he faced a trial for fraud and
perjury.
It was in these legal transcripts
that Julian learned about
Merceron’s cruel embezzlement
of Mary Cheesman, termed an
“idiot” for her mental disabilities.
"Surely his worst crime," Julian
says.
On top of this, Merceron had
his half-sister incarcerated in an
asylum.
6 LOVEEAST

East life
Imagine a concoction of the
notorious East End gangster
Kray twins and fraudster Robert
Maxwell, then you’ve got an
inkling of Merceron’s character.
In the early 1900s, husbandand-wife
sociologists Sidney
and Beatrice Webb wrote what
little description existed of
Merceron’s crimes.
Their dry passages didn’t cut it
for Julian, though, who set out
to investigate further and pen
a richer, justifiably appalling
narrative.
Julian’s journey towards
publishing The Boss of Bethnal
Green is itself a dynamic story,
full of coincidences and nearmisses.
My meeting with him even
conjured up an odd twist of
its own. We realised that the
would-be assassin of King
George III, James Hadfield, had
been sectioned in Bedlam –
which had once stood right
where we sat in Liverpool
Street.
Hadfield had been deemed "not
guilty" of trying to kill the king
due to mental instability.
"It was the first record of such a
court verdict," Julian says.
His pistol found its way into
Rocque map of Brick Lane area
Merceron’s hands, as did most
objects of any worth in East
London at the time. Eventually
it reached Merceron’s living
descendants.
Through The Times’ obituaries,
Julian came across a handful of
family members.
Merceron’s great-greatgranddaughter
was just shy of
her 94th birthday when he got
in touch with her. He recalls
how this extraordinary lady,
Susan Kendall, had said simply:
“You’d better hurry over to
Wiltshire, I’m 93!”.
Susan hoped Julian’s book might
lift what seemed to be a “family
curse”, so put him in touch
with her nephew – a military
chaplain.
Together they hauled an old
tin chest down from the attic.
This mysterious box opened
to reveal the Hadfield's gun,
once a treasured possession of
Merceron himself.
Over a decade in the making,
The Boss of Bethnal Green is the
kind of book that makes you
contemplate the city where so
many millions live.
How many more strange flukes
or branches of family trees lurk
around the corner? What other
Every trick
in the book
Christine Preisig visits the UK's first – and so far only –
open-access book arts centre in Hackney Wick
Four years ago, artists Simon Goode and Ira
Yonemura opened the London Centre for Book
Arts (LCBA) in Fish Island, Hackney Wick.
The centre provides a space where artists,
designers and hobbyists can use the specialised
and often hard-to-come-by equipment needed
for making books.
It was after Simon finished his BA in
book arts when he found out that
outside of school, there was nowhere
he could access the machinery and
tools needed to continue making art in
book form.
Book arts centres have a long-standing tradition
in the US so Simon set out on a three-month
trip to visit some of the institutions there. What
he found inspired him and Ira (who he met on
his travels) so much that they decided to open
Britain’s first and only self-funded, open-access
book arts centre.
“Here in London – mainly in West London – there
is this funny, niche bookbinding culture," says
Simon.
"They are very strict traditionalists who make
books that are very, very traditional and
expensive. But here at the LCBA, we want people
to make their own books the way they want to.
We want the widest possible audience in our
centre.”
The two artists’ motivation is to promote
book arts, often thought to be a dying
craft, as a lively and vibrant art form that
can take many shapes.
The centre encourages self-publishing
and supports a creative community via
collaborations and education.
Workshops taught there include the traditional
book-making crafts such as letterpress printing
and bookbinding but also paper marbling,
boxmaking and foil block printing.
Book art is interdisciplinary and involves a
wide range of techniques. No wonder a lot of
equipment is needed for it.
Ira and Simon have been accumulating it over the
years. Some of it is ancient and some – like the
The Stage's 37-floor apartment block, along with raised park and art wall
Can art and property development live happily together?
In this case they can, writes Julie Daniels
I recently met Gary Conway, head of marketing
at The Stage – a new residential, office and retail
complex being built on the site of Shakespeare's
Curtain Theatre in Shoreditch.
The Stage is a stupendous £750m Shoreditch
complex developed by Galliard Homes. Sitting
in their beautiful marketing suite, the glamour
of where I am is countered by the real downto-earthness
of the man I'm talking to. Gary's
Stepney-born dad was one of the founders of
Galliard and East London is still very much part of
the company's DNA.
There’s an openness about Gary and his
colleagues that you wouldn’t expect from such
a big developer. It’s still very much a family affair
and they seem genuinely thrilled to be giving
something back to the community. "We like
relationships," says Gary. "We're very 'what you
14 LOVEEAST

The Artskickers Awards
#
see is what you get' and we're the least corporate
animal you'll ever meet."
The Stage are the main sponsors of the
#Artskickers Awards. If you're a regular LoveEast
reader you'll know all about the awards and their
very talented creator Angie Gough (aka
@TheArtsCrusader). It's her (and LoveEast's)
mission to celebrate the many unsung heroes of
East London’s arts scene.
It’s fair to say that there can be a certain
scepticism about a property company sponsoring
an arts award, but the development plan speaks
for itself.
Galliard (along with partners Cain Hoy, McCourt,
and Estate Office Shoreditch) are building The
Stage – 412 apartments, offices, retail and leisure
spaces, including a rooftop public park – in
London's hippest location. But the jewel in the
community crown is that they are contributing to
the preservation of one of England’s cultural gems
– the remains of Shakespeare’s Curtain Theatre.
In the midst of the sparkly new buildings will be a
public square to show off the recently excavated
1577 Elizabethan playhouse – the place where
Henry V was first seen, Shakespeare performed
and Elizabeth I visited.
The public square and sunken amphitheatre
The Curtain Theatre under excavation
Photo: Cain Hoy
A heritage centre will display artefacts found when
the theatre was being excavated, and there will a
glass viewing platform above the remains, as well
as a sunken amphitheatre providing a venue for
performances.
So when we approached The Stage for help with
the #Artskickers Awards, they were well and truly
in the culture groove and wanted to do all they
could. This includes giving over the Shoreditch
Streetart Wall (now owned by the developers)
Know an #artskicking superhero? Nominate
them NOW at artskickersawards.com
to showcase nominees, hosting a glittering
ceremony for the winners at the glamorous Stage
HQ and generally giving financial help, practical
support and great publicity.
"So what's in it for The Stage," I asked. "Well, we
really liked Angie," says Gary. "She's very inspiring
– and it provides us with some real culture which
is lacking until Shakespeare arrives! To be honest
we thought 'Wow, this is amazing for us'."
The feeling is definitely mutual.
History hangout
Dying tradition
Hasina Zaman explains the
history behind the horsedrawn
funeral procession
In East London, a Victorian horse-drawn funeral is
an impressive and iconic sight.
Grief-stricken Queen Victoria set the precedent in
1861 on the death of Prince Albert. She arranged
an ostentatious funeral that set the standard for
public grief.
Such was the demand for mourning wear that
there was a shortage of black crêpe. It was
used in such vast quantities in the 1890s that
Courtauld’s built a textile empire on the sales of
crêpe alone.
It was a dull silk gauze – a crimped and stiff
textured material and mostly dyed the deepest of
blacks. White crêpe was used for the widow’s cap.
Funerals would often consist of a glass carriage
with two or four black or white horses dressed
with plumes of ostrich feathers. White horses
were used for unmarried women and children,
and black for men.
Queen Victoria’s influence was immense and it
was common practice for families to save large
amounts of money for their funerals.
The number of plumes would indicate the
amount spent on the funeral and, for the affluent
families, paid mutes would sometimes be seen
processing with the cortège.
The cortège travelled from the family home to the
church and then to the cemetery. This enabled
people to stop and pay their respects as the
procession passed.
They would stop and face the hearse, bowing
their heads until it passed. Men would take their
hats off.
This style of funeral is still carried out today,
but unfortunately many people are unaware of
the tradition, as we regularly see cars trying to
overtake the slow-moving carriages.
Secret East
A bit of blue
Rachel Kolsky remembers
Hackney's undisputed
queen of Music Hall
2017 sees the 150th anniversary of the
unveiling of the first London Blue Plaque
commemorating Lord Byron.
First administered by the Royal Society of the
Arts, the Blue Plaque scheme is now run by
Historic England.
Over the past 150 years more than 900 plaques
have been placed around our capital city. You
can go blue plaque spotting in Hackney to find
its seven official signs. These are complemented
by around 50 brown plaques erected by the
borough.
The plaque at 55 Graham Road commemorates
the home of music hall artist, Marie Lloyd.
Born Mathilda Alice Victoria Wood in 1870 to
26 LOVEEAST
a theatrical family, she began performing at
the Eagle Tavern, Hoxton.
At the age of 14 she was billed as Bella Delmere
but a year later styled herself Marie Lloyd
and had her first big hit, The Boy I Love is Up in
the Gallery.
Her rise to fame and fortune was swift but not
without controversy. The lyrics of her songs
often had her in front of the censors but she
could transform innuendos into innocence and
her songs continued to be sung.
She performed on all the major London stages
and travelled around the globe. Her later hits
included My Old Man ("...said follow the van") and
Oh Mr Porter.
When, in 1907, London's stage performers
went on strike for better pay conditions Marie
supported them.
In response, the establishment punished her
by excluding her from the first Royal Variety
Performance (1912). Marie’s answer was to hold
her own variety performance billed By Order of
the British Public.
Her personal life was marred by three ne'erdo-well
husbands, although the middle
one was a performer with whom she had a
At the age of 52 she was in ill-health
and while performing in Edmonton,
collapsed. She died a few days later
at her Golders Green home.
Her funeral at Hampstead Cemetery
was attended by nearly 100,000 people. A
pub in Hoxton was named after her and when it
closed a bar at the Hackney Empire was named
in her honour.
Eating in
sauté the shallot and leek for
1-2 minutes.
Roughly chop the spinach,
add to the pan and sauté for
another 3-4 minutes. You want
to just about wilt the spinach.
Towards the end season with
some pepper.
To serve, toast the two slices of
sourdough bread, peel the eggs
and cut them in half. Then place
a slice on each plate, generously
spread the bread with the
crushed avocado, add a layer
of sautéed spinach, top with
an egg each, add some garden
cress if you have it, sprinkle
each slice with a tablespoon
of olive oil and finish off with a
pinch of chilli flakes and some
freshly ground black pepper.
Mother's Day breakfast in bed
Diana Warrings is a qualified
delicious & healthy food, shared
Ingredients (serves 2)
This dish will leave any mum
with a smile on her face.
She'll not be left short when it
comes to nutrients either as the
combined ingredients are rich
in fibre, good fats, vitamins and
minerals.
Method
Wash the spinach well and leave
to dry on a kitchen towel. Finely
chop the leek and shallot and
leave to sit until ready to use.
Next, peel the avocado, remove
the pit and scoop out the pulp.
Put the pulp into a bowl, lightly
season with salt and pepper,
30 LOVEEAST
sprinkle with the lemon juice
and half a teaspoon of chilli
flakes before mixing everything
together using a fork. You
want to get a semi-creamy
consistency.
Once mixed well, sprinkle with
another squeeze of lemon juice
to prevent the mix from going
brown, cover and set aside.
Next boil the eggs and once
done, rinse with cold water and
leave them to rest.
While the eggs are boiling (five
minutes will give you soft, runny
eggs), heat 1tbsp of olive oil in a
frying pan at medium heat and
2 free range eggs
2 slices fresh sourdough bread
from a local artisan bakery
1 large ripe avocado
10ml (2 tsp) fresh lemon juice,
60g spinach
1 small shallot, finely chopped
1 inch of fresh leek, finely
chopped
1 small tray fresh garden cress
½ tsp of chilli flakes + 2 tsp to
garnish
60ml (4 tbsp) of cold pressed
extra virgin olive oil
Sea salt & black pepper to taste

Eating out
The ginger one had pancakes,
wolfed them down while
declaring them the best. I
went off piste with an order of
avocado, bacon and two eggs.
This too was declared the best.
It was flawless. DaddyO liked the
chorizo, cornbread, fried egg
and sweet corn very much.
Bistrotheque is the creation
of the one-time fashion
designers Pablo Flack and David
Waddington and they’re still
London’s favourite fashion party
organisers.
They know what looks good,
including the team working the
bar. Their striped tops had them
all looking like part of a Jean
Paul Gaultier advert.
fun palace for the fashionable
This place is swinging. Brunches
here are now a bit of an East
London institution and so is
Xavier Roide. He’s the bluehaired
pianist tinkling the ivories
underneath an equally showy
floral display.
Xavier’s brilliance is his musical
arrangements. Pop classics
re-worked with such flourish it
can take a moment to recognise
this new piece of perfection.
We loved Yazz, Madonna, Lady
Gaga.
I’ve been trying to get to
Bistrotheque for their brunch
for months, a full 14 of them.
Night time, yes, we’re regularly
there. It’s part of the repertoire
when Harry comes to stay. I’ve
reviewed it as a great place to
go. Let’s see how it fares in the
cold light of day.
Bistrotheque is the fun palace
for the fashionable. Brunch
always feels to me a little
32 LOVEEAST
decadent, so we took the small
ginger one with us, and had
ourselves a fun and full-on, selfindulgent
hangabout.
The brunch menu is
tremendous. A big yes to the
Croque Madames, French toast
and the almighty Bistrotheque
Breakfast. An "oh go on then,
why not" to pancakes, bacon
and maple syrup, Eggs Royale
and avocado with eggs, hot
sauce and corn bread .
The great Xavier can be hired
for your own party. A £450
bargain. Kevin Spacey, Gerard
Butler and Elton John have
already taken advantage of this
offer.
Don’t miss out – he comes free
with brunch.
Weekends only. £8-£17.
Handle
house
buying
with care
Naomi Jones explains what you should be asking your
solicitor when buying a new home to share
A lot of people think that when they move in
together as a couple they will obtain similar rights
as a married couple.
However, it is unlikely that a couple living together
will have rights over each other’s property, even
if they have been living together for years
or go on to have children.
Sometimes couples will choose to
hold the property in just one of
their names. The other person could
claim a share if they have contributed
towards the purchase or mortgage but
this can be uncertain and difficult to prove.
Most people will hold the property in joint names
as a whole but this might not suit, for example, a
new couple moving in together for the first time.
On any separation, the property is likely to be
split equally even if different contributions have
been made.
Alternatively, each person can hold a specific
share which is useful if they are each contributing
36 LOVEEAST
different amounts. However if anything did
happen to one of them, the property would not
necessarily pass to the survivor.
So the best thing to do is to properly document
the intention of ownership to prevent any
uncertainty or dispute, such as by entering
into a Trust Deed to provide evidence of the
shares in which the property is held.
A Cohabitation Agreement is also worth
considering to cover agreements relating to
other outgoings, separation, having children
or one person leaving their job.
It may be morbid but it is also important to make
a Will to cover how shares will pass on death.
Jones on 020 3440 8172 or send an email to
Money matters
From April 2018 small business
owners will be required to make
quarterly returns to HMRC for
their income tax.
Advertorial
All businesses, including limited
companies, will be required to
do so by 2020.
This will mean significant
increases in reporting required
for small business owners and
while there are discussions
ongoing with HMRC, it seems
that this will need to be
submitted online.
This is bad news for those
business owners who have
up to now managed to avoid
computer-based record
keeping.
Those who have a good
accountant will be in an
infinitely better position than
those who don’t because
although HMRC are lenient with
late filing to begin with, when
they do start charging fines and
penalties these are hefty.
This was seen with the Real
Time Information (RTI) system
introduced for employers which
currently charges a flat £100
penalty per late submission.
HMRC believes this is going to
make business owners more
informed in an age of internet
Computer
says no?...
Chris James explains why it's time to
find a web-savvy accountant
banking, as they will know how
much tax they need to pay on a
more regular basis.
But sceptics are theorising that
HMRC will follow this up with a
requirement to pay taxes due
on a quarterly basis as well.
If you need an accountant or
just think that changing to a
new one could be beneficial,
the right side of new legislation.
Give
yourself
away
Giving is as good as receiving help, says Karen Liebenguth
Giving time to support or listen to someone,
giving knowledge, respect, regard or praise, giving
care and love...
There are so many ways in which we can express
generosity which are not related to giving money
and yet our hard-wired survival instinct to look
after number one can present a real barrier to
going beyond our own needs and desires for the
benefit of others.
Being kind to ourselves increases the capacity to
give to others. Once we learn to accept ourselves
as who we are, we develop a sense of self-worth
and confidence. With this comes a more open
heart and mind and a capacity to give to others.
We no longer feel threatened when a friend, our
partner, colleague or boss has a different opinion.
We are more open to other people’s views while
acknowledging and respecting our own.
Being generous is not just beneficial for others,
when we give we benefit too.
Practise being generous this week by journaling
for ten minutes every day. Review the last 24
hours, write down what you have appreciated
about yourself in your day, what you have done
well, what hasn’t worked so well and what you
could and will do differently next time. This
strengthens a learning or growth mind-set.
Do you have a tendency to talk more than you
listen? Find opportunities to give someone
listening time, ask someone what’s been
happening for them. Notice whether you stay with
them, listening attentively or if you find yourself
waiting to speak. Notice the effect good quality
listening has on the other person.
And every day seek out opportunities to give
something small to someone – a smile, a wellwish,
a heartfelt “good morning”. Make someone
a cup of tea, offer a helping hand, visit someone
who is ill or unwell, write a letter or pick up the
phone to someone you haven’t been in touch with
for a while.
The list of possibilities goes on. Enjoy the
experience.
Vertical Rush
This is one of the great events
on the London fitness calendar.
It is a sprint (or walk) up Tower
42, the third-tallest skyscraper
in the City of London, originally
called the NatWest Tower.
That’s 932 steps in 42 floors.
You can run or walk and in
2016, the average time was just
under ten minutes.
As well as raising money for a
good cause – housing charity
Shelter – it is a lung-busting,
leg-burning rush of exercise.
Training for it would be a great
base for a fitness drive.
This year’s event is on 9 March
and Shelter says there are likely
to be places available now and
on the day for those who are fit
and ready to go (you will need
to pay £30 to register, and raise
£160 in sponsorship in the six
weeks after the event).
Registration for 2018 opens on
the same day. Shelter also runs
Urban Rush on 1 October. It's
a 15-mile run from the Queen
Elizabeth Olympic Park to
Putney.
Search online for Vertical Rush
or Urban Rush and Shelter for
A great abs exercise, this
requires good balance,
co-ordination and an ability
to make sure your abs fire
and don’t rely on the back
a progression from easier
exercises.
You start by laying on your back
Then, lower yourself down. If it
is too hard, start with something
To do this, lay on your back, with
Gardening
Advertorial
Sarah Kay explains the key steps to
garden redesign
Designs
on your
outdoor
space
Tender and build
With the final design agreed,
a garden designer can help to
find the right contractor for
your project. I don’t take finder’s
fees so can offer independent
tender management.
A designer can also oversee
your build to ensure that
the integrity of the design is
maintained and the build runs
smoothly.
Planting Plan
This is crucial to a garden's
success. Detailed planting
plans ensure the right plant in
the right place and a visually
stimulating display through the
year.
Maintenance
It’s pointless spending money to
produce a beautiful garden if it
is not maintained. I can provide
maintenance or a monthly plan.
So, you’ve decided that your
garden needs an overhaul. Where
do you start?
Choose a garden designer
Search online for local designers
or ask friends or colleagues
for recommendations. Review
online portfolios and check
customer testimonials. It’s also
good to check references with
past clients.
Initial consultation
This meeting aims to
understand the practical needs
of the space and the stylistic
preferences of the client.
To brief your designer, put
together a visual style board
using Pinterest and have an
honest idea of your budget.
Following this, I produce a quote
which will include fixed costs for
design and estimates for build,
plants and planting. Designers
may quote differently so it's
important to establish this.
Site survey and design
The next step is a full site
survey with measurements,
soil samples and other site
considerations.
This survey will provide the
basis for a scaled concept
drawing. I provide a concept
design and a mood board with
one set of amends allowed
before producing the final
layouts.
