Versatile Espanet Reaches 1,000 Points In Basketball
By KEN HAMWEY
Staff Sports Writer
Brian Espanet is one of
Hopedale High’s premier threesport
athletes.
The 6-foot-4, 185-pound
senior has played on a football
team that won a Super Bowl
(Millis-Hopedale last fall), a
basketball team that won a district
crown (2014) and a baseball
team that won the districts
(2015). Now that he’s scored his
1,000th point in basketball, it’s
obvious he’s a rare-breed competitor.
A Dual Valley Conference
all-star in baseball and the circuit’s
MVP in basketball, Espanet
also was the Tri Valley
League’s MVP in football and
he’ll be on scholarship at the
University of New Hampshire
in the fall. When Hopedale
played in Bellingham High’s
Hutchinson Memorial Basketball
Tournament the last
two years, all Espanet did was
spark the Blue Raiders to backto-back
titles and walk off with
Brian Espanet is flanked by his parents, Rick and Kathy, in a brief ceremony after scoring his 1000th
point. Photo by Steven Bassignani
the tourney’s MVP award both
times.
The 18-year-old forward hit
the 1,000-point mark on Friday,
Jan. 27, at a home game
against Whitinsville-Christian.
With a minute to go in the final
quarter, Espanet was fouled on
a drive to the basket from the
left side. Needing one of two
free throws, he missed the first
but connected on the second for
a 15-point night and an even
1,000 for his career.
The contest, which Hopedale
won, 49-33, was stopped for
a brief ceremony where Espanet
was photographed with his
parents (Rick and Kathy) and
posed for a separate photo with
head coach Tony Cordani.
“It’s a huge honor to have
played with great teammates
and been on great teams,’’ Espanet
said. “I’ve been fortunate
to stay healthy and play
in so many games, including
tourneys like the Clark and the
districts. Points aren’t all that
important on an individual
basis but they do play a role in
winning games. That’s the significance
for me.’’
Espanet said he was glad the
milestone has been achieved.
Now, he’s focused on postseason
tourneys. “By reaching
1,000, it gets the focus off me
and back to team goals,’’ he
emphasized. “We want to be
prepared for the Clark and the
district competition.’’
the 10th player in school history
to reach 1,000 points and
he recalled how thrilling it was
to witness three others achieve
that number. “I remember how
special it was for Lekia Cowen,
Jessica Peacock, and Anna Siefring
,’’ he said. “I remember seeing
how the fans reacted. When
I made it to 1,000, I looked in
the stands and saw some young
fans reacting. That was me years
ago.’’
The personable Espanet was
quick to acknowledge his current
teammates and his parents
but he also cited his coaches
and former Blue Raider Kevin
Bresciani. “Coach Cordani has
always stressed extra effort and
focusing on little things that
are important,’’ Espanet noted.
“Coaches (Tom) D’Urso and
(Don) Klocek also have helped
me a lot. Kevin was our point
guard on the district title team
and he symbolized what Hopedale
basketball is all about, just a
great leader and team player.’’
Hopedale’s Brian Espanet drives to the basket and gets fouled, setting
up a free throw that led to his 1000th career point.
back in football and a smooth
infielder in baseball, Espanet
finished his grid career with 34
touchdown receptions and he
has a .333 career batting average
in baseball. His basketball statistics
include a 16 points per-game
average, 9 rebounds a game, 4
assists per outing and 2 steals a
game.
Relying on a philosophy of
“competing to win,’’ Espanet,
who helped Hopedale finish
17-2 in the regular season and
co-champs in the DVC, continually
strives to reach his potential
and to realize the valuable
life lessons that athletics teach.
“Sports teach lots of lessons,’’ he
noted. “I’ve learned that when
tough times occur, you have to
stay the course. It’s important to
not give up and play through difficulties.’’
Experiencing championships
and individual awards, Espanet
is acutely aware that his threesport
career at Hopedale is in its
late stages. He knows there have
been a plethora of great moments
but he also understands
that when June arrives, Hopedale
athletics will be in his rearview
mirror.
“It’ll be bittersweet when that
time comes,’’ he said. “Right
now it’s time to focus on peaking
at the right time in basketball,
competing hard in the districts
and perhaps winning a state
championship. When this all
ends, hopefully people will remember
the championships and
maybe recall the 1,000 points.
I’ll always remember playing
for Hopedale — the great teammates
and the great coaches.’’
Brian Espanet’s 1,000 points
are simply an exclamation point
on just how efficient and versatile
he’s been in all three sports.
Ceramics for a Cause
By Alyssa Pool
Since the 2016-2017 school
year began, the Hopedale Junior-
Senior High School Art Room
has been abuzz with activity
nearly every day after school.
Students and faculty alike can be
seen forming bowls on the pottery
wheels or painting clay creations
with glaze at the nearby
tables. All of this hard work is
being completed to prepare for
the upcoming Empty Bowls Fundraiser.
Empty Bowls is a nationwide
initiative to raise money for local
food pantries. This year the Art
Club, led by the school’s Art
Teacher, Laura Welch, is aiming
to raise $1,000 for the food
pantries around the Hopedale
community. The Empty Bowls
initiative works by selling the
hand-made ceramic bowls
formed by the Hopedale students
and staff at a community-wide
ice cream social fundraiser event
and then donating the proceeds
to the local food pantries.
Hundreds of beautiful bowls
have been created in anticipation
for this event by students and
faculty of all ages.
The Empty Bowls Fundraiser
will be held on Thursday, March
30th from 6 to 8 PM in the
Hopedale Junior-Senior High
School cafeteria. It is open to
all members of the community.
Tickets to attend the event are
10 dollars each and may be
purchased ahead of time from
Laura Welch or may be bought
at the event. The ticket cost
includes one ice cream sundae
and a chosen bowl to bring
home. Additionally there will be
face painting and a silent auction
at the event for community
members to participate in.
That must be defended.
We will stand,
With the people.
We will stand,
With the water.
For the water has fed,
Housed,
Cleansed us.
For the water has protected us.
For the water has loved us.
The Air
Breathe.
Inhale the once-crystalline air,
The air that you have poisoned.
Exhale with a cough,
For the factories that made what
you’re wearing
Are destroying what you’re
breathing.
We breathe.
We inhale our self-created poison,
We exhale with defeat,
For we are the epitome of selfdestruction.
We buy with impulse.
We manufacture with ignorance.
We live in a cycle of constant selfdestruction.
We poison the sky,
Without understanding that the
air we are killing
Is the air we
Breathe.
The Land
The dirt, to us,
Is a mere placeholder,
Replaced with wet cement.
The excess, to be put in bags that
Stomped on, and
Sold.
The mountains, a burden to bulldoze.
The Fire
It burns with beauty,
Heat,
And love.
It was never meant to destroy.
A fire in the thick, deep forest
Is nature’s way of clearing the
dead,
Making room for the new.
A fire is not meant to be controlled.
It is not a weapon to be wielded.
We have abused the fire.
We have corrupted,
Exploited,
Manipulated the fire.
The sisters of the fire,
The trees,
The rivers,
The sky,
Are dying at the hands of the
A Hopedale Girl In Thailand Remembering 2016
By: Cassidy Rodrigues
2016 was the year that everything
changed for me, and it’s
finally come to a close. It was a rollercoaster
ride of thrills, challenges,
and inspiration, all of which I
would never want to change. So,
here is a list of 10 things I won’t
forget about 2016.
Meeting everyone in
D7910. My home district, 7910, is
a special group of people I am incredibly
grateful for. From people
helping me with any issues, to always
having someone to talk to, I
can say I am never alone as part of
D7910. To Robin, Marcia, Jeanne,
Alex, Hannah, Alec, and Jules,
thank you so much for everything!
Leaving my family. One of the
hardest things I had to do was say
my goodbyes. I definitely didn’t
want to, but I had to. When I
made the commitment to going
on exchange, I knew I wouldn’t see
my family for almost a year. Walking
away and getting on that plane
wasn’t easy, but I’m glad that I did.
Starting to learn Thai. Learning
a new language is far from easy,
especially when it has a completely
different alphabet, and there are
sounds us as Americans don’t use.
But I’m continuing to make progress
every day!
Eating the spiciest food in the
world. This is one thing that I have
to do all the time! I’m getting a lot
better at it, but when I first came
here, it was unbearable. Now, I can
manage some of it. Not the worst
things, though! You aren’t really
tough until you’ve eaten Thai food.
The end of my junior year. The
end of the school year was bit sad,
because I knew I wouldn’t be
coming back. Junior year was a
lot of successes, and overall, a very
happy time in my life. I still miss
everyone, but I’m incredibly lucky
to be here.
The election. This is one that
still hits a sore spot with me. However,
it taught me that not everything
will go my way in life, and
even things I may think of as inherently
wrong, others view as
right. While I disagree with it, it’s
taught me a lot about dealing with
situations I’m not happy about.
Meeting so many new people.
Here, I’ve met people from all
over the world! From Germany to
Argentina, I’ve met and become
friends with so many people from
different countries, who have
taught me a lot about cultures and
language.
Working, working, and working.
Before I came to Thailand, I
spent my entire summer working.
Not the most fun, but I needed to
save up a lot of money to pay for
my exchange. On the bright side, I
had a lot of work friends, and now
I can say I have awesome customer
service skills. Also, I get a year off,
and I saved up so much that it’s not
a problem at all!
Trips. I’ve had a variety of trips,
from Chiang Mai, Nan, Chanthaburi,
and more! While traveling is
something we do quite rarely in
my own family, in Thailand, it’s
totally normal to do it very often.
I don’t have a problem with that!
Being independent. This is the
thing I am most proud of. While I
do have the support of Rotary, my
host family, and others here, at the
end of the day, I am on my own.
My exchange, my life, and my everything
is in my own hands. I no
longer have my parents, and I’m
doing everything I need to do by
myself. It’s not always easy. But
feeling independent is one of the
best feelings in the world. I feel
incredibly prepared for the rest of
my life, and my maturity has shot
up tremendously. I am so grateful
for my independence
I hoped you enjoyed a little look
into the things I’ll be remembering
from 2016. Until next time … oh,
Eyelid Margin Disease
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Welcoming New Patients!
John C. Park, DMD
Eyelid margin disease including
blepharitis occurs when
the eyelids become coated with
oily particles and bacteria near
the base of the eyelashes. This
condition is very common and
unfortunately, is often misdiagnosed
by many eye professionals
as allergy, which it is not.
With eyelid margin disease
the eyelids are inflamed. Symptoms
include: Eye and eyelid
irritation, a film in the eye, itchiness
of the eye, redness of the
eye and a burning sensation.
This condition frequently occurs
in people who have a tendency
toward oily skin, dandruff
or dry eyes. With blepharitis,
both the upper and lower eyelids
become coated with oily particles
and bacteria near the base
of the eyelashes. It may cause
irritation, itchiness, redness, and
stinging or burning of the eye.
What causes blepharitis?
Everyone has bacteria on the
surface of their skin, but in some
people, bacteria thrive in the
skin at the base of the eyelashes.
Large amounts of bacteria
around the eyelashes can cause
dandruff-like scales and particles
to form along the lashes and
eyelid margins.
Blepharitisis also associated
with meibomianitis— a dysfunction
and inflammation of
the nearby oil glands of the eyelids
(called meibomian glands).
Blepharitis is also common in
association with a skin disorder
called rosacea. In this case, we
call the eyelid problem “ocular
rosacea.”
Welcome
What is ocular rosacea?
People who have acne rosacea,
a common skin condition
causing pimple-like bumps and
facial redness may suffer from
ocular rosacea. This can affect
the eyelids with redness and
swelling. If you have ocular rosacea,
reduce alcohol, caffeine and
chocolate in your diet. Omega-3
fatty acids (fish oil and flaxseed
oil) are also helpful. Doxycycline
or similar derivatives can help
improve the dysfunctional oil
glands as well as both facial and
eye symptoms. Reducing stress
and better sleep are critical in
controlling the symptoms.
What is demodex blepharitis?
Some people with oily (seborrheic)
skin, and more so those
who have a weakened immune
system can have microscopic
mites (demodex folliculorum)
and their waste materials cause
clogging of follicles at roots of
eyelashes, and in some cases
might be associated with development
of skin conditions
such as rosacea and blepharitis.
Another version of these mites
(demodex brevis) can be found
more generally in oil glands of
the skin and eyelids, which also
may contribute to blepharitis
symptoms. While presence of
these tiny mites is common in
everyone, researchers speculate
that some people develop demodex
blepharitis due to unusual
allergic or immune system reactions
leading to inflammation.
What if I get a stye?
A stye develops from an eyelash
follicle or an eyelid oil gland
that becomes clogged from excess
oil, debris or bacteria. Styes
can be a complication of blepharitis.
If you have a stye, treat it
like you treat blepharitis, and if
not better within two weeks, see
your ophthalmologist.
How is blepharitis treated?
Blepharitis is often a chronic
condition, but it can be controlled
with the following treatment:
• Warm compresses. Wet a
clean washcloth with warm
water, wring it out and place
it over your closed eyelids for
at least one minute. Repeat
two or three times, rewetting
the washcloth as it cools. This
will loosen scales and debris
around your eyelashes. It also
helps dilute oil secretions from
nearby oil glands, preventing
the development of a chalazion
(stye)-an enlarged lump
caused by clogged oil secretions
in the eyelid.
• Eyelid scrubs. Using a clean
washcloth, cotton swab or
commercial lint-free pad
soaked in warm water and
few drops of baby shampoo,
gently scrub the base of your
eyelashes for about 15 seconds
per eyelid.
• Antibiotic ointment. Your ophthalmologist
may prescribe an
antibiotic ointment. Using a
clean fingertip or cotton swab,
gently apply a small amount at
the base of the eyelashes before
bedtime.
• Artificial tears or steroid eye
drops may also be prescribed
temporarily to relieve dry eye
or inflammation.
Specific treatment of demodex
blepharitis: A commercial
eyelid scrub combined with
tea tree oil may be effective for
treating this type of blepharitis.
Shampooing with a product
containing a tea tree extract
is also helpful. The target here
is to reduce the population of
the mite (demodex). Other reported
treatments of demodex
blepharitis include sulfur oil and
steroids. An anti-parasitic gel
(metronidazole) also has shown
effectiveness as a treatment.
Eyelid margin disease is very
common…With a full-time
external disease specialist on
the premises, our center offers
state-of-the-art equipment to diagnose
and treatment eye problems,
including blepharitis. We
have published research papers
on the subject and lectured to
other doctors how to take care
of it. We are now a referral center
for difficult cases of ocular
surface, lid disease, blepharitis
and ocular rosacea. With our
knowledge and experience, we
can manage this problem and
continue our mission to provide
world class eye care for the entire
at Hopedale’s annual Peace Picnic.
Hopedale’s founding father
Adin Ballou said, “Times and
generations are coming that
will justly estimate me and my
work. For them I have lived and
labored, rather than for my contemporaries.
To them I appeal
for vindication and approval.”
The essay contest has proven
Rev. Ballou’s prediction true!
for students in grades 7 through
12. Students are invited to submit
a 250-word original essay
on “What does peace mean to me?”,
“How can one person help spread
peace?”, or “What I will do for
peace!”
This contest serves to keep
Rev. Ballou’s legacy alive in the
modern world by engaging our
youth in thinking about how
they can spread the message of
peace in the world. As part of
the next generation of leaders,
our youths’ interest in peace,
and their eloquence in voicing
what peace means to them, can
provide great solace to older folk
who question our youth’s social
activism. It also helps them serve
as an example to their own generation,
showing that peace is a
vital social concern worth time
Ballou was a minister and
theologian, a tireless reformer,
and a leading nineteenth-century
exponent of pacifism.
Adin Ballou (1803-1890), the
founder of the Hopedale utopian
community, was an abolitionist
and pioneering theorist
of nonviolence, whose teachings
influenced such peace-giants as
Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi,
and Martin Luther King. Ballou
created the theory of “Non-Resistance,”
a form of nonviolent
protest, which he and others in
the Hopedale Community used
to effect radical social change in
the areas of abolitionism, equal
rights for women and peace advocacy.
Unlike many other abolitionist
peace advocates of his
time, Ballou did not abandon
his nonviolent principles during
the Civil War. In later life Ballou
trusted that his ideas would be
taken up again, perhaps a century
or more in the future. Ballou’s
ideas on how we can effect
change without harming others
and thus live together in loving
peace and cooperation are as
relevant in the 21st century as
they were in the 19th and 20th
centuries.
Local School Magazine Visited By Hopedale
Newspaper Editor
By Collin Smith
On Wednesday February 8th,
Lori Koller, editor of the Hopedale
Local Town Pages Newspaper,
made a visit to the Hopedale
Jr. Sr. High School. She was
invited to talk to the Hopedale
Junior-Senior High School’s
magazine, the Raider’s Cry. The
Raider’s Cry features both art and
literature for students in grades 7
through 12.
During Mrs. Koller’s visit she
discussed how the local Hopedale
newspaper was formed. As
the Raider’s Cry Magazine is only
in its third year, students were
looking for advice on how they
could expand their own publication.
In particular, she answered
as to what was most challenging
in publishing a newspaper in
a small town such as Hopedale
as well as how she finds stories
in the town. She told of how a
newspaper in such a small town
can be a struggle, and that she is
very proud of her accomplishment
as the newspaper goes into
its third year.
In accordance with this, she
answered how Raider’s Cry Magazine
itself can use strategies to
spread the word on their existence.
It was incredibly selfless
of Mrs. Koller to take time out
of her day to visit the school,
which the members are quite
grateful for. They took away how
persistence, perseverance, and
hard work can make their endeavors
pay off with the Raider’s
Cry Magazine, and learned important
lessons on how to use
the means available to them to
help their magazine improve.
Mrs. Koller’s story about helping
to build a newspaper in a small
town has inspired these students
to do more with their own work.
The members of the Raider’s Cry
Magazine are very grateful for
Mrs. Koller’s visit and would like
to thank her for sharing her experience
with us.
Cordani Keeps Hopedale Hoop Culture At A High Level
By KEN HAMWEY
Staff Sports Writer
The boys basketball program
at Hopedale High is in a class
by itself.
Flash back to the 1968-69
season when the Blue Raiders
compiled a 16-2 record and won
the Tri Valley League championship,
competing against
powerful squads like Holliston,
Medfield and Dover-Sherborn.
Later, when Hopedale joined
the Dual Valley Conference,
its dominance continued as
championships were won in its
league, the districts and at the
prestigious Clark tourney.
Throughout the last 50 years,
three coaches — Larry French,
Don Klocek and Tony Cordani
— have maintained a standard
of excellence, commitment and
dedication. During that stretch,
championships not only were
won, but top-notch citizens also
were churned out.
The Blue Raiders’ squad,
led by Cordani for the last 19
years, has kept Hopedale in
the winners’ circle. This season,
the Blue Raiders finished
their regular season with a 17-2
record, were co-champs in the
DVC with Sutton and they’re
in the hunt for a Clark Tournament
crown and possibly a
district championship. During
Cordani’s tenure as head coach,
Hopedale has won six DVC titles,
two Clark crowns and two
district championships.
Boys basketball in Hopedale
has an atmosphere that’s always
positive and a culture that
thrives, no matter what names
dot the roster.
“We’re a small town but we
get lots of support,’’ said Cordani,
who previously was successful
coaching at Tri County
Vocational and Hopkinton.
“We’ve got a tremendous youth
program where kids learn the
basics, our administration has
been great and parents see athletics
as a big part of their children’s
education. And, I’ve been
fortunate to have a jayvee coach
Coach Tony Cordani has done a remarkable job maintaining Hopedale’s success as a basketball power.
like Tom D’Urso, who works
double duty with the varsity.’’
When Cordani arrived at
Hopedale in 1999 after winning
a TVL championship at Hopkinton
and amassing five tourney
appearances at Tri County,
he hit the ground running, leading
the Blue Raiders to a triple
crown — championships in the
DVC, the Clark tourney and the
districts.
“Coach Klocek had retired
but he left a team that was very
talented,’’ Cordani said. “That
squad was fundamentally sound
and it played amazing defense.
“We finished that year with
a 23-5 record. His program
through the years developed
a rich tradition and I didn’t
face a rebuilding project when
I started. Don was easy to admire,
and, as I got to know him,
I realized he wasn’t just a great
coach, but he’s a great person.’’
Cordani may be selling himself
a bit short. Inheriting a
plethora of talent isn’t always
a guarantee for success. It’s one
thing to have the horses but it’s
another to know how to drive
them.
The 51-year-old Cordani,
who played three sports at King
Philip, keeps Hopedale basketball
relevant and successful because
he’s analytical, has a calm
demeanor, relates well to his
players and maintains high standards
and lofty expectations.
“I’d like to think I’m calm,’’
he said. “I just worry about what
I can control. As far as my style
goes, we commit to defense and
rebounding. From year to year
we develop our offense to suit
our personnel. My philosophy
is to compete hard and make
sure our kids are reaching their
potential. If those things occur,
then winning will follow. Our
players buy into a team effort
and that results in steals, blocks,
assists and deflections.’’
Hopedale’s captains — Brian
Espanet, Tyler Miller and Mitch
Siefring — are good examples
of commitment. “Brian is so
unselfish,’’ Cordani emphasized.
“He does all things well.
Tyler is our top rebounder and
Mitch can score zero points and
yet have a tremendous game
as our facilitator. They typify
what Hopedale basketball is all
PLEASE RECYCLE THIS PAPER
about. And, Robbie Siefring is a
big plus on defense. He’s tough
and our best defender on the
perimeter.’’
Cordani, like Klocek and
French, has kept the Blue Raiders’
flame burning. He’s had
some down seasons in spite of a
winning percentage of 65. However,
he knows the formula for
bouncing back quickly, and he’s
also acutely aware that the challenge
can be difficult.
“Every year, the primary
challenge is to get our team
chemistry in order,’’ he said.
“Fortunately, the kids we get
want to be successful. We’ve
been blessed with good players.
I’m proud when teams I’ve
coached overachieve. They
may not be the most successful
we’ve had but their consistency
and work ethic humble us. It’s
a good feeling to see individuals
mature and grow as players and
people.’’
Rarely do coaches list three
championships as their goals for
one season. In Hopedale’s case,
the DVC, Clark and District
titles seems to always be within
reach. “It’s brave to list three
lofty goals, especially when we
face strong teams,’’ Cordani
said. “But, our talent level puts
us in the mix to achieve those
objectives.’’
A graduate of Bridgewater
State with a masters from Cambridge
College, Cordani has
taught physical education during
his 19 years at Hopedale. He
says he’s been fortunate to have
played for excellent coaches and
he also emphasizes how much
he’s blessed to be teaching and
coaching — two functions he
calls “great opportunities.’’
Cordani is also quick to point
to the Blue Raiders’ “good
kids’’ who travel through the
basketball system. “We have
high expectations for our players’
conduct,’’ he noted. “They
know what’s expected and they
know there are ramifications.’’
The coach says he’s rarely
had to deal with issues of discipline.
That’s probably because
Tony Cordani is a dynamic
caretaker of Hopedale’s basketball
culture.
