The <strong>Maryland</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong><br />
emerged victorious at <strong>the</strong> New<br />
Life <strong>Fall</strong> Classic, Spike Out X<br />
Tournament and <strong>the</strong> Eastern <strong>School</strong>s<br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> Athletic Association<br />
Division 1 championship. MSD also<br />
won its third straight National <strong>Deaf</strong> Prep<br />
Championship! The season ended with<br />
34 wins and 8 losses.<br />
<strong>Maryland</strong> clinched <strong>the</strong> New Life<br />
Christian <strong>Fall</strong> Classic Tournament <strong>for</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> second consecutive year. In <strong>the</strong> pool<br />
play, <strong>Maryland</strong> defeated St. John’s, Calvary<br />
Baptist, and Redeemer. Then <strong>Maryland</strong><br />
beat host New Life Christian in <strong>the</strong><br />
semifinals. <strong>Maryland</strong> went on to defeat<br />
Redeemer in <strong>the</strong> finals, 25-23 and 25-16.<br />
<strong>Maryland</strong>’s advantage was team depth and<br />
superb strategy along with great defense.<br />
The Lady Orioles walked off with<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir 10 th straight ESDAA championship,<br />
putting toge<strong>the</strong>r a dominating run<br />
to win <strong>the</strong> tournament. <strong>Maryland</strong> got<br />
an indication this season of how far <strong>the</strong><br />
program has come in <strong>the</strong> last 10 years as<br />
<strong>Maryland</strong> overpowered every opponent<br />
in both round robin and bracket competition,<br />
beating all six ESDAA Division I<br />
schools. In <strong>the</strong> semifinals, <strong>Maryland</strong><br />
beat <strong>the</strong> Western Pennsylvania <strong>School</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong>, 25-7 and 25-9. In <strong>the</strong> finals,<br />
<strong>Maryland</strong> knocked out Lexington <strong>School</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Deaf</strong> in two straight games, 25-8<br />
and 25-10. Brittany Frank, Jessica Israel,<br />
Tandy Lewis, Shaina Steingieser, and<br />
Shayna Rose Unger were selected <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
All Tournament Team.<br />
MSD was invited to participate in<br />
<strong>the</strong> MD/DC Private <strong>School</strong>s Volleyball<br />
Tournament. <strong>Maryland</strong> fell to Mount de<br />
Sales in three games. In <strong>the</strong> semifinals,<br />
Mount de Sales lost to Good Counsel,<br />
which went on to win <strong>the</strong> tournament.<br />
The members of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> varsity<br />

(junior), Hillary Frankowiak (junior),<br />
Jessica Israel (senior), Tandy Lewis (junior),<br />
Michelle Mansfield-Hom (junior),<br />
Racquel Roult (sophomore), Shaina<br />
Steingieser (junior), Claire Tucker (sophomore)<br />
and Shayna Rose Unger (junior).<br />
Sophomore Christy Hediger was team<br />
manager. Benedict, Berrigan, and Israel<br />
will be greatly missed <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir devotion,<br />
desire, motivation, and loyalty.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> junior varsity team, sophomores<br />
Tiffany Bridgett, Chelsea Morris,<br />
Audrey Robinson, and Bethany Weiner<br />
welcomed freshmen Ivana Genievsky,<br />
CJ Hirsch, Hea<strong>the</strong>r Mansfield-Hom,<br />
Janna Oshman, Liv Polzin, and Augusta<br />
Seremeth. The team accomplished its<br />
ninth consecutive winning season with<br />
a mark of 13 wins and 7 losses.<br />
The highlight of <strong>the</strong> season was <strong>the</strong><br />
2nd Annual JV Volleyball Tournament<br />
at Thomas Johnson High <strong>School</strong>. Eleven<br />
Frederick County teams participated.<br />
In round robin play, <strong>Maryland</strong> beat<br />
Walkersville (3-0), Catoctin (2-1) and<br />
lost to Thomas Johnson (1-2). In <strong>the</strong><br />
quarterfinals, MSD struggled mightily<br />
against Tuscarora but ultimately went<br />
down 25-22 and 25-18. <strong>Maryland</strong> team<br />
members exhibited a great deal of dedication<br />
and ef<strong>for</strong>t to improve <strong>the</strong>ir technique<br />
and skills in every match throughout<br />
<strong>the</strong> season.<br />
The coaches were extremely proud of<br />
<strong>the</strong> MSD volleyball team’s accomplishment<br />
in a fine and productive season. They<br />
would like to extend a heartfelt thanks<br />
to everyone <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir help, support, and<br />
encouragement.<br />
