The past month has seen the influx of the winter migratory birds arriving, with some whooper
swans being among the first spotted. Other wildlife highlights included an Osprey fishing in the Aird
Meadow Loch, two Kingfisher and two Mandarin Ducks. Our work on the reserve in October centred
around the clearing of the cut vegetation on the Aird meadow, as well as some maintenance work
being carried out on the channel waterways in front of the Visitor Centre.
There are a number of exciting events at the Reserve this November. On Saturday 7th, Castle
Semple will host a swan ringing event ran by the RSPB Lochwinnoch Wildlife Explorers Group.
This is a great chance to enthuse the younger members of your family in nature. As well as learning
something, they’ll have a great time doing it!
Last but by no means least, we will be holding a “Birds for Beginners” event on Saturday 28th. If
you have an interest in birds but have no idea where to start, this event would be ideal. Come along
to see and learn more about the common garden birds, and with a little bit of luck, some rare ones
too.
Gryffe Camera Club
Gryffe Camera Club began our new session with a welcome
members night, including a presentation on how to prepare
mounts for our print competitions. Also 5 workshops were set
up, led by club members, to run throughout the year. They are
beginners, night photography, audio visual, bird photography
and techniques.
In mid September we were entertained by Andy Stark with his
presentation on “My life as a professional photographer”.
Our first league competition of the year was at the end of the
month and was judged
by members.
The digital A section was
won by George Kennedy
with “Grub’s Up”, and
the digital B section was
won by Malcolm Martin
Grub’s Up
with “Hanging On” Full
results can be found on the Gryffe Camera Club website.
During October we critiqued the annual photographic
competition between local Primary schools giving advice and
hints to the children, hopefully to encourage them in their
future photography.
We have a busy November Programme of meetings, details
Hanging On
of which can be found on: www.gryffecameraclub.co.uk
Kilmacolm Camera Club
We’ve had an interesting set of evenings to kick off the 2015/16 season. As usual on the first night,
members had the chance to show what they’ve been photographing over the summer. There was a
varied selection of images taken all over the world (and a varied selection of envious glances!).
We also had a terrific show from Kirk Norbury. This included some excellent landscape images and
awesome night skies. He also demonstrated his ingenious method of taking time-lapse photography,
and the results were stunning.
Our first internal competition of the season was
our Summer Assignment, with the subject being
“Weather”. Sunny shots were hard to come by,
needless to say! Winners were Bill Ham, for the
best aggregate score, and David Addison, with the
best individual image, “Overcast Morning” (shown
here).
Still feeling sorry that you did not capture October’s
misty autumn landscapes? Come along and we’ll
show you how it’s done (or perhaps you can show
us!).
