Frank Harland - Obituary
Regular readers of Golden
Times will know that Frank
has written a column for us
since the very first issue. It's
with great sadness we must
announce that Frank passed
away just before Christmas
2016. Frank had been ill for
much of 2016 and spoke
of his gratitude for the care
he'd received from the NHS during his last column in
Golden Times.
Frank was born in Belfast in 1936 to a very large family,
and by the age of 15 had begun his boy’s service with
the Army. He went on to serve in The Royal Engineers
for 26 years, becoming a Warrant Officer and seeing
a large part of the world, including Aden, Australia,
Borneo, Malaya and Singapore, which is where he met
his first wife, Jean with whom he had 3 daughters.
Frank loved his military career and had a huge
number of tales and anecdotes from his time serving
his country. After retiring from the Army, Frank
worked for Canada Dry for a time before becoming
a publican, running pubs in Lincolnshire for several
years. Sadly, his wife Jean passed away in 1991 and,
as he wrote about in his Golden Times column, he
went on to become a Holiday Rep for the Over 50’s
in the Canary Islands. He had a whale of a time, the
sunshine and sociable nature of the job suiting him
perfectly, and he made a lot of friends during these
years. After spending the late 90's and early 00's
living in southern Spain, Frank relocated to Hastings
in 2008.
Frank grew to love East Sussex, he was an active part
of local walking groups, becoming a walk leader and
making many friends along the way. He was hugely
supportive and helpful during the launch of Golden
Times and delivered many thousands of magazines
during the first few years. As much as he loved the
place he called home, he never lost his urge to travel.
Well into his 70's he was backpacking accross Asia
and Australia with his grandson, Matthew.
The Frank I knew was a man who lived life to the full,
he never tired of seeking out new experiences or
travelling to new places. He was incredibly proud of his
family, his 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren
were his pride and joy. Each of them benefited from
his warmth, his kindness and his wisdom.
I'm sure many of our readers will have met Frank, and
he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
GLADYS GALLIVANTS - The search continues
“Hi folks, you realise it is obligatory that you can carry a
20 lb bag of flour over your shoulder !” were the cheery
opening remarks of the presenter. I had attended a
Franchise Fair in Brisbane and secured a place on a
seminar run by a well known coffee shop chain. “That
would not be possible for me,” I informed the panel,
“due to a back injury.” I was dropped on my head in a
gym class at age 12 and have suffered the consequences
and the bad jokes ever since.
With that disclosure, a member of the team
unceremoniously escorted me out of the gathering. The
atmosphere of relief in the room was palpable with one
hopeful franchisee commenting to his partner, “One less
in competition for this venture.” So I fell at the first
hurdle.
While in Brisbane I took the opportunity to explore the
river on one of the tourist catamaran taxis, the guide
was proud to show us the upmarket homes and give
us the latest on the South Bank Cultural Centre. One
of the first times I saw the triangular shade sails used
extensively over swimming pools or patios was at the
Opera House alfresco cafe while enjoying an ice cream.
“Keep your hats on until you are inside the theatre,” the
responsible teacher was insisting. I noted that all the
children wore peak caps with a piece down the back for
added sun protection.
The Botanical Gardens was next, a wondrous sight so
lush and the beds beautifully planted, the flamboyant
colours outstanding. While sitting under a huge tree
No one likes thinking about their own death. But death
is inevitable and making a will isn’t a morbid thing to
do. It’s a loving thing and a practical thing that ensures
the ones you care for get what you want them to have
with the least argument.
Of course, many people are afraid of the cost of making
a will. Or think they can do it themselves with a kit
from a shop. Lawyers tend to spend more time
sorting out badly drawn up amateur wills
than making good ones.
The safest way to make a will is to get a
solicitor to do it for you- and throughout
April Stephen Rimmer LLP solicitors
along with a few other solicitor firms in
Hastings* will be doing it more or less for
free.
On Friday 24th April 1987, at approximately
3pm, St Michael’s Hospice was officially opened
by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent, marking
the beginnings of an invaluable asset in Hastings and
Rother. In recognition of this momentous occasion,
the Hospice will be celebrating its 30th anniversary
throughout 2017.
Since opening its doors, the Hospice has welcomed
thousands of patients, providing excellent holistic care
and support for all those throughout Hastings and Rother
affected by a progressive life-limiting illness or bereavement.
Over the past 30 years, the services have developed to offer
high standards of palliative care and support, including
Hospice at Home care, Bereavement Services and the
award-winning Hospice Neighbours scheme.
8
St Michael’s Make a Will Month
Celebrating
with my sandwich, I heard a familiar
accent. Two gardeners were discussing
a new section. “Waar kom jy vandaan
?” (Where do you come from ?) I asked
in my best Afrikaans. “From Pretoria
where I qualified in horticulture and now I
am so happy in my new job and country,”
came the enthusiastic answer. “I’m also
trying to relocate and am searching for a business,“ I
divulged.
Find us online at www.goldentimes.co.uk
“Here are my friends details in Toowoomba, they’ve
been over here a few years and can introduce you to a
new South African group of entrepreneurs.” I hired a
car and headed up the Warrego Highway. Toowoomba
is 125 kms west of Brisbane on the crest of the Great
Divide Range, some 2,300 ft above sea level.
“Kom binne, (Come in,) take your shoes off, there is a
basket of socks if you want to use a pair,” my host said
as she introduced me round. Their home was all white
tiled floors !
By the end of the evening I had contacts and information
regarding a salad packing establishment and a post
office with house included. The South African grapevine
had begun working for me, my name on the email list for
new opportunities on the market.
Back in Cairns, I secured the services of an Accountant
to research and verify any prospective business that I
found and booked a south bound bus ticket to continue
my search. Down the East Coast...
In recognition of the 30th Anniversary and in order to
raise funds, Stephen Rimmer LLP and other Hastings
Solicitors* will draw up a will for you and charge you
nothing. The usual charge would be £150 for one basic
will and £200 for a pair for a married couple. In return
you would simply be invited to make a donation to St
Michael’s Hospice in lieu of payment: you can either
match these charges, give more, or indeed less.
The Hospice is looking to celebrate its 30th
anniversary with the residents of Hastings
and Rother by holding 30 events in 30
places, including Celebratory Teas in six
locations.
Celia Pyke-Lees, Chief Executive at the
Hospice, said “We will be welcoming and
encouraging everyone in Hastings and
Rother to be a part of our 30th anniversary
events and celebrations. The community plays a
vital role in the work they do, and without the support
of those who generously give their time or donations,
they simply wouldn’t be able to provide the specialist
care and support.”
Involuntary estrangement - a living bereavement? - by Julia Meanwell
The very painful matter of
family estrangement is one
that is sadly close to my
heart. I find it astonishing
to comprehend that in the
UK the current estimation
of grandparents being
denied access to their
grandchildren is one
million. This heart-rending
statistic is usually as a result
of family breakdown or
bereavement.
So many questions, how did
this happen, why did this
happen? Feelings of anger,
pain, helplessness and
confusion are overflowing
at finding yourself in this
situation. The heartbreak of
being kept away from your
grandchildren is undeniable
but sadly with fragmented
families on the increase it is
becoming more common.
Grandparent estrangement
does not benefit the wellbeing
of the grandchildren
unless of course there is
good reason such as the
presence of violence or
abuse.
I have noticed several
articles recently about
celebrity family rifts. The
singer Olly Murs and his
twin brother Ben have
not spoken for several
years and it has torn their
family apart. After being
estranged from her family
for 9 years ex-Spice Girl
Mel B has decided to
resolve the feud with her
relatives saying that she
realised ‘life was too short’.
Boxer Amir Khan’s wife has
demanded that he choose
between her and his family
after a particularly bitter
feud. Whatever the reasons
for these three feuds are
they all have one thing in
common – children missing
out on interaction with their
grandparents.
It is difficult to understand
how people who were
always so close could end
up so far apart. Healing
the rift can feel like an
impossibility especially if
the cause of the relationship
breakdown seems unjust or
confusing. The conflict can
really only be resolved if
both parties are prepared
to talk. Although if this is
unlikely then seeking help
via mediation could be a
way forward.
If you are currently
experiencing the distress
of separation from your
grandchildren, then there
is support out there for
you. The Grandparents
Plus Support Network
www.grandparentsplus.
org.uk brings together
grandparents who
have lost contact with
their grandchildren, to
share experiences and
information. They provide
a Grandparents Contact
Helpline on 0300 033 7015
which is open on Mondays
and Fridays only between
2 – 4pm. Their team of
trained staff and volunteers
can offer confidential
support.
See life more clearly with safe cataracts treatments
Who is at risk of cataracts?
The risk of cataract increases as you get
older. Other factors that can cause cataracts
include certain diseases such as diabetes,
personal behaviour such as smoking and
alcohol use, or prolonged exposure to
ultraviolet sunlight.
What is a cataract?
Cataracts occur when changes in the lens of
the eye cause it to become less transparent
(clear). The lens is the crystalline structure
that sits just behind your pupil (the black
circle in the centre of your eye).
When light enters your eye, it passes
through the cornea (the transparent layer
Eye with clear lens
Eye with cataract
of tissue at the front of the eye) and the
lens, which focuses it on the light-sensitive
layer of cells at the back of your eye (the
retina). Include graphic to explain.
Cataracts sometimes start to develop in a
person's lens as they get older, stopping
some of the light from reaching the back of
the eye.
Over time, cataracts become worse and start
to affect vision. Eventually, surgery will be
needed to remove and replace the affected
lens.
What are the symptoms of a cataract?
Cataracts normally develop very slowly.
At first, the changes to your sight may be
slight, but as your cataracts get worse you’ll
start to notice symptoms such as your sight
is misty and cloudy. Colours seem faded.
You’re more sensitive to light such as,
bright sunlight or car headlamps may glare
more. Double vision may develop, or seeing
a halo (seeing a circle) around bright lights.
Eventually, almost all people with cataracts
will find that their sight has turned misty or
cloudy, and things have become difficult to
see all of the time.
Your vision deterioration may start to
affect your everyday life, enjoying activities
with friends and family. Cataracts could
affect Advanced your ability cataract to read, drive treatment and work.
LIVING THE
ALEXANDER
WAY OF LIFE
by Liz Jeffries
“You were on my mind...” “Bound for South Australia"
experience; quality above
quantity! I’m forever fitting
things in. Spike Milligan’s
epitaph on his tombstone is “I
told you I was ill” (in Gaelic).
Mine would probably say “I’ll
just do this before I do that”.
I will probably still be saying
this in the next world!
Over the last couple of years
or so there has been an
upsurge of articles, books,
courses and workshops on
mindfulness. It has become
huge, with everyone thinking
they need a course on this
for their survival in this hectic
world in which we live. I’m
not knocking it. Anything that
helps the way we think and
behave, is to be applauded
and people do appear to gain
a lot from it.
Stopping and thinking has
got to be good. If I was more
‘present’ in my thoughts I
wouldn’t waste an enormous
amount of time trying to
remember where I have put
my mobile phone. Why does
that happen? It is because
I am thinking of something
else, whilst I absentmindedly
put my phone down.
There are real benefits to
being in the moment. We
savour our experiences
more; we stop rushing
around. Instead of trying
to fit more into our day we
can have a better quality
Being mindful, or present,
can really help with anxiety.
Two years ago, as a result
of medication side effects, I
suffered from this. It came
on very suddenly without
warning, lasted six months
and was very difficult to
control. Focussing on the
present minute/hour/day
really contributed to my
recovery.
The Alexander Technique
works in the same way.
You become aware of your
behavioural patterns, where
tensions lie and how to
change them; you are then
able to control your reactions
to situations.
I have a new website www.
alexandertechniquehastings.
co.uk which gives more
information. Do get in touch
if you would like to know
more. 01424 465838/07929
I have cheated a little with
the song title. The first is by
Crispin St Peter, remember
him? The second line, from a
sea shanty, I just had to put in
because I shall be going there
shortly for a holiday….hurrah!
Tricia's column - Springtime: Eggs-actly what I needed
I
came across a wonderful quote attributed to
Margaret Atwood today - "In the springtime,
at the end of the day, you should smell like
dirt". Now I hope she was suggesting that
we should all be out walking in the woods, or
gardening, rather than mud wrestling
or anything strange like that, but
whatever earthy fun takes your fancy,
it's good advice. It's certainly advice
that the younger members of my
family take to heart, digging things
up (sometimes things I've spent hours
planting) capturing muddy, wriggly
things in jam jars and poking things
with sticks. It has dawned on me lately
that, in the five and a bit years I've
been writing about being a grandma
in Golden Times, the grandchildren
have all done a lot of growing up.
Even the littlest one is now at "big school" and at
the other end of the scale the oldest are entering
their twenties. High time they started producing
some great-grandchildren really, or before you
know it, I might end up with some peace and
quiet on my hands.
Your FREE, Family-Friendly Guide
to what's on & where to go in East Sussex!
Spring really isn't the time to
think about peace and quiet
though, is it ? As Robin Willams
said, "Spring is nature's way
of saying, "Let's Party!". And
before anyone asks,
SPRING
2017
yes I have been
googling quotes
about Spring for
inspiration. Guilty
as charged!
The Family Buzz (Pictured here)
is back alongside Golden Times
this month, so if you need some
inspiration for family fun this Easter,
this is the magazine you're looking
for. You'll have no trouble locating an
egg hunt or an Easter trail with the
Family Buzz to hand.
to advertise with us call Debby on 01424 429139 1
So while they're still young I'd better round up
some children and take them somewhere muddy,
before you know it they'll be teenagers, sulking in
their bedrooms and listening to music that makes
everyone over 30 wince.
NIGHT TO REMEMBER RETURNS WITH NEW URBAN TREK
Registration has opened for Chestnut Tree’s eighth
annual Night to Remember midnight walk, with a new
15-mile Urban Trek added to the choice of walks.
Chestnut Mum Zoe,
whose 7 year old son
Connor was cared
for by Chestnut
Tree until he passed
away at the hospice
in 2006, has spoken
out to persuade
others to take part.
“The walk takes
place around the anniversary of us losing Connor so it
feels nice to do something enjoyable and which makes
such a difference to Chestnut Tree. There is always a
brilliant atmosphere on the night, with the marshals
spurring everyone on to the finish line.”
“I really would encourage everyone to take part, whether
it’s the 5, 10 or 15 miles” says Zoe. “Every mile walked
and every pound raised in sponsorship gives more
families like ours the chance to make memories and
spend their final days with their child supported by
Chestnut Tree House.”
Registration for this ladies-only event is open now at cth.
nighttoremember.org.uk, with an early-bird discounted
entry fee of £15 for the first 500 ladies to sign up online.
carpeted with over 30,000 tulips, creating stunning scenes
for visitors to enjoy. Tulips are followed by over 100 varieties
of roses through June, hundreds of scented lilies, the kitchen
garden showcasing an abundance of produce and a blaze of
colour provided by hundreds of dazzling dahlias, during the
Dahlia Days event in early September.
Complemented by a fantastic café with a beautiful terraced
seating area, exhibitions of sculpture and art and a lovely
gift shop Pashley is a great destination for a day out in 2017.
sixty five Chelsea Gold Medals, are on hand throughout the
to take orders from those inspired by the spectacle.
Gardening tips for mid-late Winter
by Phoenix Gardening
It only seems like yesterday it was Christmas. If you like
a real Christmas tree, one thing to bear in mind is you
can always chop it up as finely as possible and use it
as an ericaceous mulch around plants such as azaleas,
rhododendrons and camellias. Let’s start with the veg
patch, apply manures where necessary, you can plant
onion sets and shallots, sow early crops under some
fleece to give them some protection, if you have cloches
these are good for warming up the soil at the same time
as protecting plants. ‘Chit’ seed potatoes.
We can sow hardy annuals, in milder areas these should
be fine in situ in colder areas you might need to keep
one eye on the weather and protect them a little, or
start them off indoors. Sow sweet peas, Feed and mulch
beds. Plant summer bulbs, buy seeds and bulbs if you
haven’t already done so. As temperatures start to rise
keep an eye out for pests and diseases as these can
multiply with the temperatures.
Moving into mid spring, once the potatoes have ‘chitted’
sufficiently and the soil is a little warmer we can
plant them now. Plant container grown shrubs, plant
herbaceous plants, for those tall herbaceous plants put
some stakes in early.
If you’ve planted some seeds in trays or pots now is the
time to pick them out and pot them up. If you have a
pond now is a good time to plant aquatics before growth
is advanced. If you have a greenhouse or a free window
sill in the conservatory try taking some leaf cuttings of
streptocarpus or Begonias. It’s a good way of increasing
your stock.
Want strawberries and ice cream for summer? plant
some now. A good way to plant strawberries if you have
a little space is in a propped up pallet keeps the fruit off
the ground.
Sussex Housing & Care
HELPING PEOPLE LIVE LATER LIFE TO THE FULL
Sussex Housing & Care is a not
for profit Housing Association
providing high quality, affordable
housing, support and care
services for older people in
Sussex.
The organisation was formed
in 1946 by a group of local
Seaford residents working in
senior positions within health
and housing, with a commitment
to providing high quality
accommodation and services
to older people across Sussex.
This vision remains to this day
with Sussex Housing & Care’s 4
care homes and 25 sheltered,
retirement and independent
living schemes across Sussex,
providing accommodation to over
800 residents.
New at the top
Sussex Housing & Care have
recently appointed a new all
women senior management
team headed up by Tracy Evans
as Chief Executive. Tracy has
over 30 years of housing and
regulatory experience. Joining
her are Sarah Roebuck as Finance
Director who has held a number
of senior posts; including
healthcare, education, banking
and social housing. New Director
of Housing and Care, Amanda
Hodge, completes the team at the
end of February. Amanda joins
the organisation from Wealden
District Council, and has nearly
30 years housing experience
including the development of new
retirement living and extra care
accommodation.
Tracy says;
“I am delighted to have been
appointed as Sussex Housing &
Care’s Chief Executive. It is a
privilege to lead the organisation
and build on its successes including
the recent ‘Good’ ratings of our
care homes by the Care Quality
Commission (CQC). We are
looking forward to working with our
residents, our staff, our board and
L to R Amanda Hodge, Tracy Evans and Sarah Roebuck at Cheneys Lodge, Seaford
all our stakeholders in Sussex to
provide high quality services to our
current and future residents. Our
organisational focus is on older
people’s services in Sussex, and we
are well placed to build on the 70
years of success already achieved
by Sussex Housing & Care.”
CQC rated ‘Good’ all round
The organisation were pleased to
announce that all 4 residential
care homes have all been rated
as ‘Good’ by the Care Quality
Commission (CQC), a much
coveted standard in the care sector.
The homes based in Haywards
Heath (Oakwoood Court), Battle
(Saxonwood), Bexhill on Sea
(Ardath) and Crowborough
(Woodlands) received glowing
feedback from not only CQC
Inspectors but friends, relatives
and the residents themselves.
Care staff and management
were praised for their caring,
professional yet friendly
approach and for taking time to
communicate with the residents
at all times. This was particularly
evident at Oakwood Court care
"When is a cheat not a cheat"
by AJ Hudson
Gloria sat resting on the sofa, a well-earned rest was in order
after the long slog of hoovering and polishing the house into
pristine condition.
Kate had asked her mother to come over to help clean the
house whilst she busied herself with tonight’s ‘meeting’ as Joe
had put it! Well it was Joe’s boss who had asked to come over
for dinner this evening actually. Joe had worked hard in the
accounts department for 4 years now and hopefully a promotion
was on the cards. There was a higher grade job up for grabs and
Joe wanted the job. “Well, there’s nothing concrete” Joe told his
wife.
Gloria had a few unvoiced misgivings “It could be bad news as
well as good.” she worried to herself.
“Dough Balls are ready to go into the oven later. Oh mum!
I’m so worried as to why Mr Blake wants to come over tonight!”
Kate’s nervous voice called from the kitchen. “I do wish Joe
would ring, he said he would if he heard anything. I’m a bag of
nerves and I feel so sick!” Kate said.
“I’m sure it will be fine, dear. Now deep breaths, worrying won’t
make a jot of difference will it? Now get on and make those
meringues” Gloria said as she tried to reassure her daughter.
“Yes, you’re right.” She agreed.
“Eggs whisked and sugar folded – do it right and you won’t be
scolded.” Kate recited the words her mother had taught her all
those years ago.
“Have you got the flour etc. ready for the pastry for the ‘Boeuf
Wellington’? I’ll rub it in for you if you like! Gloria offered. “The
pastry is all ready and waiting in the fridge.” Kate said. Gloria
opened the fridge door and saw the pre-made packet of pastry.
“You’ve got shop bought, Kate!” “Mum, its 2017, shop bought is
fine, the Beef is shop bought too. I didn’t have to go to the farm
and walk it home on a lead, you know!” Kate laughed. “The eggs
are shop bought too and the sugar and the….” “Ok, I get the
picture!” Gloria felt defeated. “Mum, I know you have taught me
to do things properly but once in a while it’s ok to cheat. Besides,
I’m so flustered, I can’t be messing about with ingredients.
Anyway, I will have made the pastry.” Gloria raised an eyebrow
“Well I will have rolled it out and cooked it!” They laughed.
Just then Joe opened the front door. “Hi Kate! Hi mum! The
boss is bringing the Champers later!” “The Champers?” Kate
questioned. “Oh Yes, I’m sorry I couldn’t phone, I got caught up
with Blakesy” Joe said excitedly as he added, “because! I’ve got
the job!” “You what!” Kate and Gloria said in unison. “What are
you like? You could have rung on your way home!” Kate said.
She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, instead she threw up
“And, by the way I’m expecting a baby!” She announced.
A CHANGE WILL DO YOU GOOD by Michele Duke
I had such a great reaction to
my last article. So many women
contacted me and came to see
me. Many of them said, “I’ve
been reading your column
for ages but I was always too
shy and afraid to contact you
before. I’m so glad I plucked
up the courage this time.” I
think it was the promise of the
magic new skincare device that
did it! Thank you to all of you
who did overcome that fear –
it’s been great fun getting to
know you and I’m delighted
to be meeting many of you
at my various events. Those
who have been trialling or
have purchased the Arbonne
Genius Ultra are already seeing
amazing results and realise it
was worth making that leap of
faith.
So let’s talk about courage.
Yes, I know this is a fashion
and beauty page, but I believe
overcoming our fears and
inhibitions is key to making
decisions about how we present
ourselves to the world. It’s so
easy to “play it safe” and do
what you’ve always done. The
same hair colour and style.
Always a trouser and top outfit.
A favourite cardigan is always
the first choice. Perhaps you’re
still wearing the same makeup
you did in your twenties. Or
you tell yourself that using
the same old skin care is fine,
despite the fact that it’s doing
nothing for your wrinkles.
Making changes is hard. Our
brains don’t like it so we shy
away and retreat back to the
familiar. But change is what
keeps us youthful and vibrant.
Change stimulates our senses
and invigorates our minds. With
spring just around the corner,
now is a great time to consider
what you could do differently.
How about a lovely new coat?
Something that makes you feel
glamorous and sprightly every
time you step out of the house.
Maybe it’s time to update your
accessories. A new necklace
or earrings or a watch for the
men. How about a new hair
style – try going to a different
stylist and ask their advice.
And, of course, a makeover
to show you how to use the
latest natural make-up to look
fabulous every day. Nothing
rings the changes like a bright
new lipstick.
Research shows that changing
our habits and stepping out
of our “comfort zone” causes
changes in the brain. Our
brains are able to actually
“rewire” and start building new
connections which is why, when
we start something new it feels
very uncomfortable but after a
few times it gets easier until
eventually it becomes a habit.
That old adage “you can’t
teach an old dog new tricks”
may be true for dogs but it
certainly isn’t true for people.
Which is why the lovely ladies
who overcame their inhibitions
and came along to my events
for over 50’s are finding they
can wear different colours and
styles and that the new antiageing
skin treatments do work
for them. Why not make up
your mind to take a small step
to changing your old habits?
Let me show you how.
xxx
I am Michèle Duke and I
fabulous. Come along to one
For over 15 years I have been involved
in running a group activity. The first
was 'The Academy Photographic Group'
based in Erith, Kent. The second is
'Camera 1066 Club' based in Rye East
Sussex. The successful formula used
for both clubs is that an activity occurs
at each meeting. (The reason for going.)
The activities vary. (Retains Interest.) At
Rye, we hold one club room meeting
and one location meeting each month.
This keeps costs down to one room
hire fee per month. These costs can be
covered by membership fees.
Each of my photographic groups has
been self-funding, and as each group
became established; it has attracted
external funding. To obtain external
funding the group needs to present
a set of profitable accounts, to show
that it is viable. Also it has to be nonpolitical,
non religious and not run
for profit. (The organiser receives no
payment.) Importantly; the group will
be a benefit to the community. i.e.
People will meet like minded people to
share their interest. They can also learn
something. (This attracts educational
funding, because it is seen as a benefit
to the individual.) The club room
meeting also allows the success of the
last location meeting to be discussed
and to decide where the next location
RUNNING A GROUP ACTIVITY by John Wylie
meeting to be. The location visits
consist of a wander around a place
of interest, and the members taking
photographs using various makes of
cameras. It is then followed by visiting
the nearby café or pub, and enjoying a
drink, a cake, and everybody having a
good natter; showing photographs etc.,
which can run late into the afternoon!
(This is the important social side of
the group when everybody gets to know
each other.)
To attract members free advertising is
needed, this can be articles in the local
Photograph by John Wylie
paper, magazines, and word of mouth.
Facebook (Camera1066club) and a
website (camera1066clubryeuk.btck.
co.uk/) is a must. The club will also need
to put a constitution together, stating
the clubs aims and objectives, and the
role of each committee member.
The U3A is a good source of finding like
minded people and they will also help
you to form a group from its members.
Importantly; if it is arranged through
the U3A, the new group will have public
liability insurance from the start. It is
only when the group becomes bigger
that room hire becomes financially
viable.
I was lucky when we moved to Rye;
because having a proven history of
running a successful group, I was able
to start the 'Camera 1066 Club' having
been granted independent funding.
Finally, it is important to have a club
name that can be registered online,
obtain an email and website address,
Facebook page etc., to publicise the
group. Remember; the group should be
fun... it keeps members!
John Wylie is a retired professional photographer,
who also lectured at various universities etc for
over 30 years on both photography and model
making . John runs 'Camera 1066 club' which is
now in its 4th year.
Sea Bream with Garlic Lemon Butter Sauce - Recipe by Faz Razeen
Seabream is also known as
Orata, Dorada and Dorade
Royale. There are several fish
that come under the title of
'Bream' but the Mediterranean
gilt-head Bream is without
question the tastiest. They have
a succulent, white flesh that is
ideal for grilling, baking and
frying either whole or as fillets.
Ingredients:
2 Seabream (350-500g)
2 tbsps. unsalted Butter
8 medium size potatoes
400 Frozen French beans
4-5 garlic cloves
Salt and black pepper
Small packet of fresh Rosemary
Ingredients for Garlic Butter Sauce
4 cloves garlic, crushed
60g (2oz) unsalted butter
Juice of 1 lemon
Method
Prepare fish by cutting fins and remove scales by
scraping with a sharp knife, clean the fish under
running cold water. Slash the seabream diagonally
to allow the garlic and seasoning to infuse it.
Put a generous amount of the rosemary into
the pockets, heat two
tablespoonsful of butter in a
frying over a medium-high heat
Season the fish on both sides
with salt, freshly ground black
pepper and sprinkle lemon
juice.
Fry the fish for 5 minutes each
side on medium heat until the
skin is crisp and golden-brown.
Cook the potatoes in salted
water until just tender, in the meantime boil the
French beans for approx. 6 minutes until cooked
almost al dente. Drain each and keep ready to add
to the fried garlic pan.
Gently fry the garlic with butter in a frying pan
until softened, then add the potatoes and the
French beans to the fried garlic frying pan and
season with black pepper and salt, cook for further
3 minutes.
Method for Garlic Lemon Butter Sauce.
In a small saucepan, gently melt the butter. When
it starts, sizzling add the crushed garlic and let it
sizzle for a minute or two, allowing the garlic to
infuse the butter. Lower the heat to the minimum
setting, add the lemon juice, stir and let it heat
through.
Drizzle over the Seabream before serving.
MIKE RAXWORTHY
I thought this month I’d look at our local theatres - The
White Rock in Hastings especially are providing (with the
help of promoters and bands) a great selection of local
talent, original artists and a percentage of tribute acts.
Playing live on Monday March 27th is Georgie Fame. If
you’ve never been to one of his concerts please give it a
try - he’s a legend with a string of hits. He’ll most probably
be performing with his sons, one on drums and the other on
guitar. George will be on his much-loved Hammond Organ
on which he with expertly plays the bass lines with his feet! It’ll
be a very special intimate evening and you’ll be treated
MIKE to not only RAXWORTHY
a host of his hits but personal stories about his
incredible career. Well worth a night out!
Still at the White Rock, on Sunday 2nd April, everyone can
enjoy The 18th Beatles Day! It’s in aid of Macmillan Cancer
Support and has raised thousands of pounds over the years.
Starting at 11am and running for approx 12 hours, you can
plan your visit with the help of an excellent programme.
There’s no set seating, you’re free to come and go as
you please enjoying the various bars and the restaurant.
This year the event is celebrating 50 years of Sgt.Peppers
Lonely Hearts with Club Band, and features 97 acts with over 500
performers, on 3 different stages. Tickets are excellent value
MIKE RAXWORTHY
at £15 (children under 14: £7.50) but if you go as a family
you’ll make a good saving on booking 4 tickets at once.
It’s a musical Beatles marathon - but it’s for a great cause
and remember - everyone involved is performing for free,
so please support it if you can - you’ll love it!
Also coming up at the White Rock on June 15th is ‘From the
Jam and Secret Affair” billed as a Mod Special. Last year
at Chidfest our band, Soul X Press, supported From the
Jam, and even with a replacement for Paul Weller they were
brilliant - good to hear those classic jam hits from the guys
that originally played on them!
St Mary in the Castle on Hastings Seafront continues with
a strong programme of concerts and events. On Thursday
23rd March and Friday 24th March they present 400 East
Sussex Music students from Hastings & Rother Area Music
Centre performing two celebration concerts.
Spring Concert 1 will include nearly 150 musicians and
singers and will feature the Hastings & Rother Area Youth
Wind Orchestra, Jazz & Blues Band, Youth Singers, Wind
Band, Percussion Ensemble and the Hastings & Rother Area
Music Centre’s Samba Band. Spring Concert 2 will include
nearly 200 musicians and will feature Hastings Area Youth
Guitar Orchestra, Gold Violin Ensembles, Recorder Consort,
Vivaldi String Orchestra and the Hastings & Rother Area
Youth Symphony Orchestra. Tickets £9, Concessions £6.
If that wasn’t something completely different, how about a
‘Musical’? On Thursday 6th, Friday 7th and Saturday 8th April
2017 - Renaissance Theatre will be performing the wonderful
classic Rodgers and Hammerstien's musical SOUTH PACIFIC!
Doors open at 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start. All proceeds go to
St Michaels Hospice, and tickets will be available at Hastings
Tourist Information Centre from March 1st.
The next edition of Golden Times will be hitting
the shelves in early May, and will have a
submissions deadline of Thursday, 13th April.
