Frank Harland - Obituary Regular readers of Golden Times will know that Frank has written a column for us since the very first issue. It's with great sadness we must announce that Frank passed away just before Christmas 2016. Frank had been ill for much of 2016 and spoke of his gratitude for the care he'd received from the NHS during his last column in Golden Times. Frank was born in Belfast in 1936 to a very large family, and by the age of 15 had begun his boy’s service with the Army. He went on to serve in The Royal Engineers for 26 years, becoming a Warrant Officer and seeing a large part of the world, including Aden, Australia, Borneo, Malaya and Singapore, which is where he met his first wife, Jean with whom he had 3 daughters. Frank loved his military career and had a huge number of tales and anecdotes from his time serving his country. After retiring from the Army, Frank worked for Canada Dry for a time before becoming a publican, running pubs in Lincolnshire for several years. Sadly, his wife Jean passed away in 1991 and, as he wrote about in his Golden Times column, he went on to become a Holiday Rep for the Over 50’s in the Canary Islands. He had a whale of a time, the sunshine and sociable nature of the job suiting him perfectly, and he made a lot of friends during these years. After spending the late 90's and early 00's living in southern Spain, Frank relocated to Hastings in 2008. Frank grew to love East Sussex, he was an active part of local walking groups, becoming a walk leader and making many friends along the way. He was hugely supportive and helpful during the launch of Golden Times and delivered many thousands of magazines during the first few years. As much as he loved the place he called home, he never lost his urge to travel. Well into his 70's he was backpacking accross Asia and Australia with his grandson, Matthew. The Frank I knew was a man who lived life to the full, he never tired of seeking out new experiences or travelling to new places. He was incredibly proud of his family, his 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. Each of them benefited from his warmth, his kindness and his wisdom. I'm sure many of our readers will have met Frank, and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Frank Harland - March 1936 - December 2016. Heathfield: 10am at the clock tower on the High Street. THURSDAYS: Hastings Town Centre: Starting at 2pm outside Rye Bay Kitchen, Robertson Street. Hailsham healthy walk: 10.30-11.30 Setting off from the war memorial on the High Street. FRIDAYS: Battle: 10am opposite Battle Abbey on The Green. Church Wood: Starting at 10.30am at Church in the Wood car park, Church Wood Drive, Hollington. Bexhill: 11am, in the foyer of the De La Warr Pavilion. Eastbourne Shinewater: Meet at 10.30am outside the Co-Op on Milfoil Drive. SATURDAYS: Ore Health Walk: Meet at 10.30am outside Ore Community Centre, Old London Road.
