Maggie Alderson finds homes with fabulous kitchens
It started with the kitchen hatch, beloved of the neatly pinafored
1950s housewife. So convenient to be able to pop a hot Pyrex dish
straight through, ending the tiresome oven-gloved march from
kitchen to dining room and the even more irksome parade of dirty dishes
back. The next stage was the eat-in kitchen, with preparation and eating
happening in the same room, but now our expectations have cranked
up another notch to the eat-in kitchen with integral family room.
So the 21st century ideal home has a lovely open plan area where Mum
can kick back on a sofa watching the news with a glass of wine and her feet
up, while teens work on their Snapchat ‘streaks’ (something no one over
the age of 25 understands…), younger siblings run in and out through
the glass doors to the garden and Dad mans the induction hob.
But into this open plan modern idyll creeps that eternal foe of domestic bliss:
mess. And so the dream kitchen now requires another element – extra rooms. Top
of the shopping list is a walk-in larder – for food and ingredients storage – or a
pantry, which is the same idea but with additional space for china and utensils.
Although even better is the Martha Stewart ideal of a separate china and glass
store. Serious food storers also dream of a stand-alone refrigerated cool room.
Also highly desired is not just a utility room, but a fully equipped laundry with
a butler’s sink, a permanently erected ironing board and a pulley clothes airer.
Really posh is a return of a feature of Victorian homes – the flower room, specially

‘urban loft meets country barn’.
You can of course create a
beautifully made traditional
oak kitchen, though we would
encourage you to consider mixing
it with some painted elements like
Snow, our version of a brilliant
white, with the insides in Mist, a
beautiful soft grey, which adds
contrast and practicality.

“
Curiouser and curiouser!’ cried Alice (she was so
much surprised, that for the moment she quite
forgot how to speak good English)”. In Chapter
Two of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the protagonist
finds it hard to contain her excitement – and it’s a
similar feeling one gets when walking into the fabulously
curated Winkenhurst Manor, near Heathfield in Sussex,
one marvelouslly curious room, leading into another.
For the owners, however, it was the ‘chocolate box’
Regency facade that first put them under its spell: “It’s
a classic English country house facade,” says Paul, who
bought the house with his partner Martin ten years ago.
“The front, which was built in the 1830s is double bowfronted
with Doric columns on either side of the central
door.” Perfect symmetry and Regency style to the front
of house hides a fabulously historic building behind:
“The back of the house is an old Sussex long house,
which dates back to about 1704,” adds Paul. There’s no
doubt that this Grade II* home is rather special.

Although the couple know a little about its history
– Winkenhurst Manor was originally home to the
Miller family, and once housed the local vicar – what’s
particularly interesting these days, are the historic
collections of items within. Martin, as well as running
Martin D. Johnson Antiques & Interiors, has more than
a pinch of the Victorian collector about him, collecting
silverware, shells and historic plasterwork, amongst
other things – all of which are displayed with deft care,
around this spacious and beautifully light family home.
“We’re not very good at buying small amounts of
anything,” says Paul. “We tend to go to big trade fairs,
and we’ll fill the pantechnicon with stock. Sometimes
we will display it in the house, or keep it ourselves,
although most of the stock goes into a warehouse
and then up for sale – mainly to the American
trade.” It’s easy to see why such classically English
artifacts would go down a storm across the pond.
The couple, who work together in the antiques and
interior design business, have made an art form out of
creating unique displays of collectables: “We sell quite
a lot of bookcases and create a ‘look’ for our bookcases
– rather than filling them with leather books. People
assume that all you can do with a bookcase is put

we take up to the Decorative Fair in Battersea.”
They have also come up with a superb way of upcycling
Victorian museum display cases: “We bought a clearance
lot from a museum, as they were getting rid of them, and
we chopped the legs off and made them into coffee tables,”
says Paul. It may sound drastic, but it gives the cases a
new lease of life, and makes them relevant and usable in
a modern home as is demonstrated by the one that takes
pride of place in the living room at Winkenhurst Manor.
“We’ve sold a couple which are now in people’s
seaside properties in the US,” adds Paul. “When the
children come back from the beach, having collected
shells and things, they just pop them in the cabinet.”
Martin would surely approve, given his own love
of shell collecting, although the one in his own
home, contains samples of ornate plasterwork.
Ornate plasterwork, as well as being dotted around
the house, dominates the stairwell and landing area at
the heart of the house: “They are mostly examples of
the mouldings in Parisian or French country houses,”

antiques business,” says Paul
says Paul. “These samples would probably have been
used by artists as references. It’s a bit of an homage to
Sir John Soane’s house,” he adds. Soane’s house, on
Lincoln’s Inn Fields in central London, has not been
altered during the 180 years since the architect’s death.
It’s magical, but you wouldn’t want to live there. This
house, on the other hand, feels loved and lived in.
“Even though we have a lot of traditional things in the
house, we live in a relatively modern way,” says Paul. The
contrast between traditional and antique, with modern and
often industrial pieces, is something you notice as soon as
you walk into the house. It is perhaps most evident in the
kitchen-cum-orangery, where an upcycled water tank acts
as a kitchen ‘server’ or sideboard and is home to a large
collection of antique silver and blue and white Delft-ware.
“We often sell things from the house, so it’s helpful to show
people that you can take traditional silver, or candelabras,
and make it work in a modern house,” adds Paul.
Another impressive feature in the kitchen / dining area
is a vast refectory-style table made from reclaimed boards
and topped with silver candelabra. “We bought it already
made, from a man in Belgium. He basically reclaims
buildings, so they are either floorboards or scaffolding
boards.” Overhead are the now almost classic reclaimed
industrial lights. I am about to suggest that they look like
ones we had on the farm where I grew up, when Paul beats
me to it: “The lamps are 1960s heat lamps, which I think
were from a farm and were used to keep the chicken houses
warm!” They’ve certainly gone up in status since then...
Paul and Martin seem to have a knack for finding
furniture and artworks with an interesting, often humble
provenance, whether it’s the reclaimed water tank they
believe to have come from a ship or submarine, or the
former poultry lamps. By contrast, they have also

acquired some rather special items, from rather special
people. The master bedroom suite illustrates perfectly a
mix of modern and antique, everyday and otherworldly.
On one wall is a large abstract and colourful oil painting.
“We bought the picture as part of a job lot of paintings
that used to belong to Adam Faith,” says Paul. My eyes
are also drawn to two metal and glass occasional tables at
the foot of the bed. “They used to belong to Sir Norman
Hartnell, the Queen’s dresser. He designed the Queen’s
wedding dress and coronation gown. They were from his
original Bruton Street studio where most of the royals went
to get dressed and a lot of stars as well. We have a picture
of Merle Oberon stood next to one of them,” says Paul.
A dressing room, which is next to the master
bedroom suite, was created by a carpenter friend of the
couple. Standing on and inside a display cabinet by
the window, are spats and boots, which also belonged
to the famed couturier: “We don’t wear them! I don’t
think they would fit! We just thought they were a
nice thing to have in a dressing room,” says Paul.
A dressing room is certainly a very civilised thing to
have... as is a master bedroom with two en suite bathrooms.
I ask if this helps them avoid arguments? “I don’t like

sharing!” laughs Paul. So, who is the tidier of the two?
“I’d like to say me, but it’s probably not true. I tend to
leave my clothes where I drop them!” Tidiness aside,
the gentlemen’s bathrooms are very different in style.
Paul’s bathroom is unfussy and painted in pale grey
with white tiles. On one wall, a selection of silver-gilt
frames have been used, quirkily, to enclose found objects
with visual appeal – rather than pictures. Opposite,
is a Lucian Freud-esque portrait of a bearded man
with ruffled hair, called Far off Gaze signed simply ‘C.
Spratt’ and two Russian-looking sailors by the artist
Joe Machine. Clutter is avoided by encasing it in a
chrome and glass display cabinet, lending ordinary
items such as toiletries an air of the collector’s item.
Martin’s bathroom on the other hand is shamelessly
that of a collector, more specifically a collector of shells.
Shelves are used for the display of shells and corals in
complementary pinky peach shades while a classical
bust, covered in shells by an enthusiastic Victorian,
stands on the windowsill overlooking the scene. It is this
bathroom which is also a Jack and Jill, and can be used
by guests in the neighbouring guest room, if required.

chairs and commode, as well as another bespoke
upholstered headboard offer a simple backdrop to some
seriously ornate French church candelabra, wall sconces
and an imposing classical bust. “We collect quite a lot of
church relics,” says Paul, “from Portugal, Spain and France
– they tend to decommission their churches as they had so
many of them, so there is a ready market for church relics.”
Over a surprisingly rustic bare-brick fireplace hangs a large
starburst mirror. “We buy them from antique auctions.
That one is mid 20th century I believe,” says Paul.
As well as this guest room, there is also a guest suite
in the old part of the house – which can be reached
by a secret door on the central stairway. It comprises a
bedroom, bathroom and anteroom which Paul uses as an
office. “The guest suite is handy when we have friends
visiting who have children, as they can use the anteroom
as well” says Paul. The bedroom area, compared to the
rest of the house, has a relatively low ceiling with an
ancient beam across. Fortunately, five sash windows help
to keep the room lovely and light, as does the muted
decor: “The whole house is either Cornforth White
or Lamp Room Gray by Farrow & Ball,” says Paul.
The ‘Whistle’ lettering on the wall, reminiscent

an old railway station. “We bought it from another
dealer, so we’re not entirely sure of its origins,”
admits Paul. The louvred cupboards were here when
Paul and Martin moved in, but seemed to suit the
room’s understated style so were left in place.
Winkenhurst Manor really is a wonderful combination of
original, unspoiled features and tasteful modern additions –
all of which have had to comply with the tight restrictions
one associates with a Grade II* property... All except one.
“In the early 1960s, before the house was listed,
someone took all the walls out making three rooms into
one great big, enormous, 36’ by 30’ room,” says Paul.
This area now contains two vast seating areas as well as a
baby grand piano. “I was having lessons,” he continues,
modestly. “We use it when we are having functions

Mark Lane
Mark Lane is a garden/landscape designer
and owner of Mark Lane Designs. He is
also a published garden writer, BBC TV
presenter and member of the Professional
Garden Consultants Association.
What first got you interested in gardening?
As a young boy I remember following my
grandfather around their large garden with a trowel
in one hand and a ball of string in the other. I would
help him divide plants, sow seeds, tie back climbing
roses and collect sweetpeas by the bucket full. He
loved roses and red hot pokers, so every time I
pass my rose and peony border at home I think of
my grandfather and the cherished times I had.
What’s your favourite garden and why?
That’s a really difficult question. Every
garden is special and has its own atmosphere,
scent, and moment in time. I live very close
to Godnestone Park Gardens and I regularly pop
in and make my way around the grass borders
and the walled garden. I have also been influenced
greatly by the gardens at Sissinghurst Castle,
Great Dixter and Hummelo, Piet Oudolf’s garden.
The latter is a magical place, brimming with lots
of ideas and has a peaceful, restful hum to it.
March is a busy time for gardeners, what
will you be focusing on in your garden?
I love March, watching plants gently revealing
themselves after the slumber of winter, but there
is a lot to do. I focus firstly on weeds and either
dig them out or cover them with a thick mulch
of leaf mould or home-made compost. The
compost bins will get turned and fish, blood and
bone will be gently worked into the soil.
The Cornus (dogwoods) and Salix (willow) grown
for colourful winter stems will be cut back, a
large clump of Salvia pratensis ‘Indigo’ will be
divided and replanted and all plant supports
will be put in place ready for the year ahead.

Makes 6 fritters, serves 2
For the Fritters
• 250g uncooked corn
kernels
• 2 eggs
• 1 garlic clove, crushed
• big pinch of salt
• ½ tsp ground
coriander
• ½ tsp ground cumin
• ½ tsp smoked paprika
• ½ tsp baking powder
• 2 spring onions,
chopped
• 3 tbsp chopped fresh
coriander
• 3 tbsp porridge oats
• 1 tbsp coconut oil
• 1 avocado, pitted,
peeled and sliced
• 1 lime, cut into wedges
For the tomato salsa
• ½ red chilli, deseeded
and finely chopped
• 1 beef tomato, diced
• 1 tbsp chopped fresh
basil
• ¼ red onion, finely
chopped
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 tsp red wine vinegar
• pinch of salt
1. Place three quarters of the corn in a food processor
along with the eggs, garlic and salt. Blend until
smooth. Add the rest of the corn, the spices,
baking powder, spring onions, fresh coriander and
oats, and process for 10 seconds. Then pour the
fritter mixture into a bowl.
2. Melt the coconut oil in a frying pan over a medium
heat. Pour in 2 tablespoons of mixture to form a
fritter. Fry for 3 minutes on one side, then flip over
and cook for another minute until cooked through.
3. Transfer to a plate. Repeat with the rest of the
mixture to make 6 fritters.
4. To make the salsa, mix all the ingredients together
in a small bowl.
5. Serve the fritters with slices of avocado, the salsa
and wedges of lime to squeeze over.

The old saying about sow’s ears not being able to be
turned into silk purses is, rather sadly, mostly true.
The exceptions are rare, perhaps especially when
it comes to architecture, but when it does work, it is a
cause for celebration. Successful property transformations
breathe new life into run-down old buildings and give
hope and confidence to others daring to embark on similar
projects. Admittedly we are visiting this house on a lovely
sunny day, but I suspect that even grey skies don’t darken
the view. As I am greeted by owner Nicola and her young
Red Fox Labrador, Lupin, outside the house, it is already
hard to imagine what the house looked like in any ‘before’
pictures. To Lupin’s dismay her usual long run along the
golden sands at Camber has been cut short by our visit and
although not totally placated by another outing later in
the day, she obediently trots inside with us nevertheless.
The house was built around forty years ago and already I
can’t help thinking that it takes an impressive combination
of skills to be able to change a jaded and uninspiring 1970s
house into acceptable accommodation, let alone a dream

that Nicola possesses these in buckets and spades, and has
not only been able to see past this house’s drab exterior
and years of neglect, but has also summoned the patience,
attention to detail and determination needed to carry out
the actual transformation. She and her team of builders
have somehow managed to bring New England to old
England, as this home now looks as if it would be just as
comfortable near the shores of Cape Cod as Camber Sands.
The location has helped, I’m sure; the fact that the beach
is only a pebble skim away must have sent some energising
ozone to aid the inspiration, and help to bring a clear
vision of how the house could be transformed. Nicola, her
husband and three boys live in Burwash Common, but
they know and love Camber Sands: “We’ve always come
down here with the boys. It has such a lovely long sandy
beach. I knew I wanted to find a property down here – the
location is right, it’s near to London and most of the other
beaches nearby are pebbly.” That said, many of us would
have been put off from actually purchasing the house. Nicola
smiles. “It was a tired old chalet bungalow with swirly
carpets, Artex on the ceilings and nicotine stained walls.”

Nice. Fortunately there were no big structural problems,
but it was obvious that she needed to start again from
scratch and that the house had to be completely gutted.
Nicola employed local builder Dave Lancaster and his
team, and the renovation project began in earnest. “My
starting point was a completely white beach house, a New
England look. I didn’t want it to be twee,” she adds, “like
a typical blue and white striped seaside house, but I did
want a rustic feel, with a nod towards the location, and it
definitely had to be a beach house in feel.” The interior was
completely stripped out and then rewired and re-plumbed.
The outside of the building was given a total facelift and clad
in weather boarding, painted in a delicate, pale shade of sea
green. They made a few internal alterations, opening out the
kitchen to make a more spacious, easy living area downstairs.
The inside of the house was then clad in new pine and then
painted white throughout – “we got through an awful lot
of white paint!” she laughs. “The resin from the pine kept
creeping through. We tried brushing it and then rolling.
In the end we sprayed it. That seemed to do the trick and
gave the pure finish that I needed.” All the floorboards on
the ground floor had to be replaced, but upstairs the boards
were intact – preserved by the carpets (it’s good to know that
something beautiful can emerge from beneath the ugliest of
swirly carpets). It was a fairly easy job to paint all the floors
a pale, sea breezy colour: ‘Ammonite’ by Farrow and Ball.
The simple floor treatment has proved to be a godsend too,
as it is very easy to sweep out the main by-product of seaside
living – sand, which is inevitably traipsed in all the time.
Nicola’s eye for detail and her clever use of up-cycled
salvage and retro items has come into its own on this project.
Although the pine cladding is completely white, she wanted
one wall in each room – “I don’t like the term ‘feature wall’,
but there isn’t another word for it” – to be clad in old salvaged
floorboards that Nicola has carefully collected. The result is
very effective, “although there is one room in the house that
has missed out because the builders couldn’t quite get their
heads around the fact that I wanted to use old floorboards on
the walls”. They weren’t sure about the scaffolding planks that
Nicola has used on the kitchen units either, but they, and the
bespoke handles, really give the right rustic feel to the kitchen.
The vintage, slightly rustic look has been very successfully
applied in this house and I wonder how Nicola has managed
to find so many perfectly appropriate items in such a

short time. The house took nine months to renovate, which
seems to me like lightning speed, but it was much longer
than Nicola expected – she had thought it would be finished
within an impressive six months. The secret to achieving
the right look fast, apparently, is to become a bit of a salvage
hunter. “I have a garage at home that contains all sorts of
things just waiting for the right space.” She points to the huge
blue and white ‘Milk Stout’ sign on the wall near the dining
area. “I’ve had that for years and never quite knew what I
was going to do with it, but when we bought the house I saw
the ideal space for it – and it is from this part of Kent too, so
it fits right in.” The wonderful piece of corrugated iron on
the opposite wall – and who would have thought that such
a thing could look so appropriate – is another case in point.
“My husband couldn’t believe that I wanted it,” she laughs.
Much of the furniture has come from her grandparents and
an elderly uncle’s home and some pieces, such as the lovely old
trunk in the front sitting room that once travelled the world
with her Air Vice-Marshal great-uncle, have great sentimental
value too. Somehow she has managed to find exactly the right
item for each space – by luck, and through the industrious and
creative work of up-cycling. I’m impressed by the simple but
very effective window treatments, that are made from French
linen sheets, cleverly clipped onto curtain poles, and by some
of the light fittings: the quirky kitchen lights are made from

lamp base. Nicola also makes decorative and functional use of
all sorts of things that many of us would overlook – the old
rowlocks from her grandfather’s boat and an animal feeding
trough are put to good purpose in the utility room. “I collect
things.” she says simply, showing me a nostalgic collection
of postcards from old Camber. A long row of antique ginger
beer bottles and some colourful vintage children’s books and
annuals have all been used together to help create a theme. “I
wanted to create that ‘lashings of ginger beer,’ old-fashioned,
seaside holiday/adventure feel,” she says. Nicola obviously
has an eye for a find, but I am beginning to wonder whether
her garage might not be more of a giant warehouse.
The seamlessly retro theme continues upstairs, where the
bathrooms are simply and effectively decorated with subway
tiles. Nicola has turned old wash stands into functioning
basins and then carefully added vintage accessories. It is the
charming details that immediately soften what could have
been stark, functional rooms into bright and welcoming
spaces. The bedrooms have been treated in a similar
uncomplicated way and the understated scheme is a great
backdrop to the quaint finds and harmonising colour accents.

there’s such an expanse of sea and sky outside. Whatever it is,
it creates an uplifting and calm space and works very well.
It is tricky to make a garden so close to the beach, as
wind, salt and sand are the enemy of many plants, so Nicola
has taken a leaf out of a famous local garden’s book – that
of Derek Jarman’s further down the coast at Dungeness
– and created a sculptural look for the front garden using
pieces of driftwood and more salvage. The back garden is
another story – in fact it’s a story that links the past with
the name of Nicola’s house and explains the intricate and
imaginative mural on the wall running along the boundary
of the garden. “Originally the plot had contained just one
house, called Shell House,” she says, “because the owner,
a man called Edwin Sutton, had decorated the outside of
his house and the end wall all over with images made from
shells. The original house was knocked down in the 1970s
to allow for two houses to be built on the plot, and this
house was renamed ‘My Way’. All that was left were the shell
designs on the garden wall.” Nicola changed the name

as decorated by Edwin Sutton, but now perhaps this
version of Shell House – under the charge of another
creatively ingenious decorator, is fast becoming famous
in its own right as the perfect holiday retreat.

I
always think there are two kinds of new mother.
The ones who were looking at the giant Mack truck
heading towards them at great speed – and the ones
who are simply looking the other way when it hits them.
In reality, almost every new mother is somewhat blindsided
by the arrival of that little darling nestling in his or
her crib. The love is overwhelming. But even if your best
friend warned you about the stitches, the tiredness, the
soreness and the challenges of doing literally everything
with one hand, chances are she didn’t get around to talking
about some of the beauty challenges which are so common,
post-pregnancy. That’s where I come in, this month.
What to do about thinning hair. A hair ‘fall’ is entirely
normal after pregnancy. What’s actually
happened is that during pregnancy, your
hormones prolong the growth
phase of hair – so less hair falls
out than normal. After birth,
the hair that was supposed
to fall out but didn’t tends
to shed all at once, because
oestrogen levels plummet.
You will almost certainly have chunks
of it falling out in the shower but
the worst thing you can do is panic,
because hair doesn’t like stress one jot.
Nightly massage can help deliver
nutrients to hair follicles; spend five
minutes really moving the scalp over
the head (which you’ll also find
fabulously de-stressing, as we carry
a surprising amount of stress in the
scalp). Ideally, ensure your diet
features lots of greens, seeds, nuts
and oily fish – but highly respected

How to smooth away your stretchmarks?
Stretchmarks are a bit of a lottery. Everyone
thinks they’re to do with skin that has literally
been stretched like a Space Hopper, but in
reality, it is largely your hormones which dictate whether or
not you develop stretchmarks. Angry, red marks will definitely
fade over time – but the silvery lines left behind really can
be helped. I was terribly cynical about this fact – but after
sending lots of products out to testers for our Beauty Bible
books, my co-author Sarah Stacey and I became convinced
there are products that really work; those that did well in
the trials – not just on ‘fresh’ stretchmarks, but those which
had been around for some time – included Aromatherapy
Associates Renew Rose Massage & Body Oil, £42 for 100ml,
good old Bio-Oil, £8.99 for 60ml, and Clarins Stretch Mark
Control, £38 for 200ml. As with anything, though, products
only work if you use them; you need somehow to carve
out time for regular application of your chosen product,
smoothing it at least once a day into the affected zone.

I had been debating a facelift for a while as I found
fillers were not giving me the look I wanted. After
much research I decided to go with Mr Amir
Nakhdjevani at Bella Vou. This was a no brainer
decision for me as the surgery promised minimal
downtime and the procedure would be carried out
under a local anaesthetic.
During the procedure
I felt no pain during the whole procedure and after
a few hours it was finished. The staff and I chatted
& laughed throughout the whole procedure, it was
surreal!
I then sat up and took a look at my face, it was
slightly swollen but nothing like I thought it would
be. I was able to walk back to my hotel without
the need for a bag covering my head to hide the
bandages!

to upset anyone squeamish here, but with someone in my
family reporting not long ago that ‘my nipples have turned
to leather’, the ‘feeding station’ could generally do with some
TLC, for most nursing mothers.) What I would say is that you
need to be very, very cautious about what you smooth into
nipples, if you’re still breast-feeding. Be absolutely sure that the
cream does not, for instance, contain any peanut oil (Arachis
hypogaea); there is some thought that the current boom in
nut allergies may be related to the use of nipple creams which
contained peanut oil. Choose an all-natural brand like Green
People Organic Babies Mum & Baby Rescue Balm, £10.50 for
100ml, or Shea Mooti Mama’s Calming Nipple Cream, £9.99
for 50ml (sheamooti.com); there’s no taste or smell to either.
(Shea Mooti, in fact, is a fantastic range to check out if you’re a
new mother: they make glorious products for mother and baby,
run by Violet Reid, a dynamic mother-of-three who wanted
products she’d feel happy to use on herself and her kids.)
Tackle the tiredness. My mother always used to say: ‘Sleep
when the baby sleeps’ – and while it’s tempting to run around
playing catch-up with housework, work-work or simply
reading this magazine, there’s no better piece of advice. I
doubt that falling asleep (at least when the baby’s not crying)
is your problem – but if it is, I heartily counsel you to head
in the direction of the peerless This Works Deep Sleep range,
featuring everything from hair serums to body oils via a bedside
oil diffuser which pumps out a combination of chamomile,
lavender and vetiver that’s just like knockout drops. While
sleep’s a must, so is exercise: get up, get out there, move your
body. There is no better way to get back your get-up-and-go.

Rebuild your weakened nails. It’s tempting to head off for
a set of gels to conceal weak nails, or even resort to a nail
hardener. (These work for a short while but can soon overharden
nails, leaving them brittle and prone to snapping. You
just can’t win, can you?) Instead, focus on nourishing nails. Keep
a little pot of nail oil on your bedside table and use it, use it, use
it before you go to sleep at night. Or if you loll off to sleep with
a baby on your boob, then do it first thing next morning. I’m

By all means have manicures – but keep nails short,
groomed and painted in a pale shade so that chips
won’t show between nail-painting sessions.
Above all, give yourself and your weary body
plenty of TLC. I always use the analogy of
that in-flight warning (which we hope we’re
never going to have to resort to): you’ve got to
‘put the oxygen mark on yourself before you
can put one on someone else’ – and never is
it more true than post-partum. Check out

aforementioned sheamooti.com, and loveboo.
com; they all offer natural skincare for
mothers, and for babies – massage oils, body
creams, balms and treats that will have you
feeling pretty again before you know it.

regime? I have always taken
the best care of my skin
and used what I stock in
the salon and recommend
to clients. The Eve Taylor

agents, chlorine is found in laundry whiteners and even
household tap water, and sodium hydroxide found in oven
cleaner is extremely corrosive and an irritant when inhaled.
There are some great alternatives however, that are non-toxic,
equally as effective, and provide a positive step towards having
a toxic-free home. Vodka gives that perfect shine to taps and
tiles, and essential oils are a healthier, happier alternative to
artificial house fragrances. A simple filter jug can clean up
tap water and if you’re not keen on using vinegar, baking
soda and lemon juice to scrub the kitchen, there are a few
great companies producing non-toxic cleaning products.
Cookware - Non-stick cookware has been used domestically
since 1956, and has saved many an elbow from scrubbing
off baked-on egg. A lot of non-stick pans and oven trays use
Teflon, a synthetic polymer that, when over heated, can be
incredibly toxic. If you’re able to invest in a new frying pan or
roasting dish, then go for ceramic, cast iron or stainless steel.
If not, then just be careful not to over heat it whilst cooking.
Plastic - Extensive research has been done into plastic and
the effect it has when its chemical components leach into our
food, needless to say the impact it has on the environment.
During food production and packaging, food’s contact
with plastic is unavoidable. There are ways, however, to
keep your dinner’s exposure to a minimum. Bisphenol
A or BPA is an ubiquitous compound in plastics, that,
when consumed, imitates oestrogen in the body, affecting
hormone levels in both men and women, potentially leading
to chronic ailments. Ways of avoiding these risks are not
using plastic containers to heat food in the microwave,
using glass storage containers over plastic ones and buying
fresh or frozen veg over canned. If you’re on the run a
lot, it’s worth having a stainless steel water bottle, and if
you’re feeling really keen, buy a wooden toothbrush!
Beauty products - We love trying new and natural beauty

organic goodies. There are endless lists of hidden chemicals
in our makeup. Parabens and Phthalates are two of the worst
offenders. Remember Phthalates from the household cleaning
ingredients? Well, it’s the same stuff used to make plastic food
wrap, insecticides and detergents, that’s also in commercial
makeup! Although lead isn’t used in paint anymore, it still
manages to creep into some of our favourite products in the
form of synthetic colours and fragrances, which are processed
by the liver, just like our food. Ways to avoid this are to pick
your favourite lipstick colour from a fruit based pigment, and
use foundation from a small-batch company to avoid lead
contamination. There are some wonderful natural makeup
products available now, that you’ll love as much as we do.

Blueberry and apricot slow cooker porridge
Contains 1 portion of fruit per person
Serves 4 Prep time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 7-8 hours (overnight)
• 200g cup jumbo oats
• 800 ml milk or almond milk
• 800ml water
• 1 tbsp maple syrup / honey
• 60g dried apricots (or any dried fruit)
• pinch of salt
• pinch of cinnamon
• 1 sliced banana
• 160g blueberries
• 4 dollops Greek yogurt
1. Put the oats in the bowl along with a pinch of salt,
then pour over the milk and water. Add the dried
apricots, cinnamon and maple syrup.
2. Turn the slow cooker on its lowest setting and cook
overnight for 7-8 hours.
3. In the morning, give the porridge a good stir. Add
a drop of milk to loosen. Spoon into bowls and
add sliced banana, blueberries and yoghurt as a
topping.

Watermelon, kale and quinoa salad
Perfect for a packed lunch and contains 2 portions of fruit and veg
per person
Serves 4 Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes
• 200g quinoa
• 4 tbsp pumpkin seeds
• 160g watermelon or diced
apple (skin and seeds
removed, cut into chunks)
• 160g kale, chopped
• 2 ripe avocados
(peeled and sliced)
• ½ small pack mint
(finely chopped)
• ½ cucumber (diced)
• 50g feta (crumbled)
• juice 1 lime
• 1 punnet salad cress
1. Rinse the quinoa. Put it in a pan with a fitted
lid and cover with 200ml water. Cook covered,
over a medium heat for 15 mins or until fluffy
and the water has been absorbed. Don’t worry if
it catches on the bottom a little. Fork through
to separate the grains, then leave to cool.
2. Meanwhile, heat a frying pan over a medium heat and
toast the pumpkin seeds for 1 min or until they start
to pop. Tip into a serving bowl with the watermelon,
kale, avocado, mint, cucumber and feta. Toss through
the quinoa, then squeeze over the lime juice with a
pinch of seasoning. Top with the cress and serve.

wedges, with peas, spinach

Contains 3 portions of veg per person
Serves 4 Prep time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
• olive oil
• sea salt
• juice of ½ lemon
• 8 x fillets of mackerel
• 4 x medium sweet potatoes
(cut into wedges)
• 400g frozen peas
• 400g baby spinach
• 200g edamame beans
• 1 tbsp capers
• ½ pack parsley, chopped
• 4 tbsp crème fraîche
1. Preheat the oven to
200˚C/400˚F/Gas mark 6. While
the oven is heating up, chop your
capers and parsley and place in
a bowl with the washed spinach.
Put some water on to boil.
2. Cut your sweet potatoes into
wedges and rub with the oil
and season well with sea salt.
Roast in the oven for 10-15
minutes, until lightly browned.
3. While the sweet potatoes are
roasting, line an oven tray with
parchment paper and brush
lightly with olive oil. Lay the
mackerel fillets skin side up
on the paper and season the
skin with a drizzle of olive oil
and lemon juice. Place in the
oven with the sweet potatoes
for a further 8-10 minutes
until the skin is crisp and the
fish is cooked through.
4. While the sweet potatoes and
mackerel are cooking, your water
will be boiling. Add the peas
and edamame beans, cook for 2
minutes then drain off the water.
Add the beans to the washed
spinach, chopped capers, parsley
and crème fraîche and mix.
5. Serve alongside the mackerel
and sweet potato wedges.

Spring has Sprung
Sue Whigham explores our fascination with snowdrops
I
went to a talk about
Sissinghurst Castle
Garden a few evenings
ago and we were reminded
that Vita Sackville-West
would have little pots and
posies of flowers on her
desk to inspire her as she wrote
about them. I’ve had a small pot of Galanthus ‘S. Arnott’ outside
my back door for a year and brought it in about half an hour
before sitting down to write, thinking of Vita and those vases,
and lo and behold, the flowers, tightly closed for the night,
have opened up fully in minutes. This really is the way to see
snowdrops and their subtle beauty – face to face. Actually, G.
‘S. Arnott’ is an absolutely classic snowdrop with large, textured
petalled flowers and with such a pretty scent. It wasn’t introduced
until 1951 when it immediately received an Award of Merit from
the RHS. Its origins remain confused despite taking the name of
Samuel Arnott who entitled a review he published on snowdrops
in 1904 as The Fair Maids of February. Such an apt title.
Snowdrops are not native to the British Isles and G. nivalis,
the common snowdrop, which has become widely naturalised
both here and in Europe, was first referred to in the sixteenth
century. Carl Linnaeus gave snowdrops their scientific name in
1735 from the Greek gala meaning milk and anthos, flower.
However, it seems that they might have been planted by Norman
monks in the grounds of ecclesiastical buildings as a symbol of
purity and they are certainly often found in graveyards and abbey
ruins. Sheets and sheets of G. nivalis grow in the beech woods
at Welford Park, nr Newbury, visited just a week ago. A period
of mildish damp weather had caused them to shoot up in their
thousands although they were not yet in their full glory. Welford
Park is one of the many monastic sites in the country famous
for its snowdrops and it seems that they were an important
element of church decoration there for the feast of Candelmas.
By 1600 G. nivalis was joined by G. plicatus from which so
many hybrids and cultivars have been developed but it wasn’t
until the mid nineteenth century that there was much interest in
snowdrops. The snowdrop was widely used in Victorian design as
a motif so was certainly becoming popular by then. New forms
of G. plicatus were brought back from soldiers fighting in the
Crimea in the 1850s and it is interesting to read that Scotland
is particularly good for snowdrops as many Scottish regiments
were sent out there. The G. plicatus they brought back soon
hybridised with G. nivalis. A particularly choice snowdrop, G.
‘Castle Green Dragon’ was found in the grounds of Brechin Castle
whose owner, Lord Dalhousie, had strong links with the Crimea.
Snowdrops are geophytes meaning that for a large part of
their yearly life cycle there is no sign of them at all as they exist
underground. And whilst you could describe this as their dormant
period, far from it. It is all happening in that the flower buds will
form in the preceding March before flowering and continue to
develop for about eleven months. By June the flower parts are
clearly formed and then there is good root development as the
soil temperature drops and the plant prepares for flowering. After
flowering most of the starch reserves in the bulb are used up
and the bulb becomes flabby and in dire need of replenishment.
That’s why it is always better to buy snowdrops ‘in the green’
after they’ve flowered and then get them into the ground as soon
as possible. Bulbs can just dry out and fail. So plant them in a
site with good drainage, good light, never under evergreens and
add plenty of organic matter, leaf mould or well rotted garden
compost. If you have heavy soil chuck in a handful of grit and
some bone meal for good measure. Ideally you would divide the
clumps every two years or so if you want your plants to bulk up.
There are literally thousands of snowdrops to choose from
these days with galanthophiles breeding more and more hybrid
beauties. The trend now is towards yellow markings and of course,
a single plant can cost a considerable amount although nothing
like the fabulous sums paid for tulips in the 17th century.
G. ‘Atkinsii’ is an early flowering cultivar whose flowers
are described as resembling ‘the drop-pearl earrings of
Elizabeth I’. Its outer petals are very slim and the inner petals
have a distinctive heart shaped green marking. Another
distinguishing feature is the fact that one leaf of each bulb
is usually folded back. This is a good snowdrop to try as
it is both vigorous and has a delicious honey scent.
G. ‘Magnet’ is another easy to grow snowdrop. The
flower is carried on a very slender pedicel which causes
the flower to sway in the slightest of breezes.
G. plicatus ‘Trym’ – as the flowers of this snowdrop open,
the outer petals reflex and the flower looks like a little Chinese
pagoda with distinctive green markings on the outer petals. It has
had a cult following amongst galanthophiles since its discovery
in a domestic garden in Westbury-on-Trym, nr. Bristol.
G. nivalis f. pleniflorus ‘Flore Pleno’ is the double form of G.
nivalis and well worth growing. They are not difficult and spread
easily. The inner petals are dense and are prettily tipped in green.
G. elwesii have been big business in Turkey for years
and whilst there are now many different and variable
cultivars, one in particular worth growing is ‘Comet’. It has
a beguiling combination of large flowers and broad grey
leaves, each one of which wraps around the other at the
base of each flower – a very distinctive characteristic.

A garden for all seasons
Follow Jo Arnell’s spring tips for a gorgeous garden all year round
This is what we’d all like, isn’t it? A good looking,
interesting garden all year round. It is frustrating to
look out at gaps or endless greenery. We want plants
that will cheer us through the winter gloom, provide hope in
the early spring, a burst of colour – or some cool shade, in the
summer and a glorious glide through the autumn to brighten
the darkening days. Impossible! It does sound like a tall order,
I know, but it can be achieved; by choosing some good plants
that do their job well, and a few that will (like many of us),
just keep cheerfully trudging along all through the seasons.
All year interest is not the same as a low maintenance
border, which is mainly evergreen, unvaried and unchanging,
and sometimes a bit municipal looking. The difference is in
the word ‘interest’. For borders to be interesting they need
to change with the seasons: vary their leaf colour, come into
flower, make seed-heads, berries, or have interesting bark.
The evergreens still have an important place here, either in
their own right, or as a foil for the performing plants – and
to provide a framework for the border as a whole. It also
calls for a little bit of forward planning and allowing enough
space for plants to come and go through the seasons.
Successional Planting
Making sure that your plants perform in succession, so that
there’s always something of interest at any given time, is easier said
than done, but we can aim high. With a little luck – and some
amenable plants, it is possible to have something of interest in the
borders every month. It helps if you have good, wide beds so that
three layers of plants can be squeezed in, that way there’s always
something about to take over – the plant equivalent of one on,
one off and one in the wash. There isn’t always room for this ideal
scenario however, so this is where things like bulbs and annuals
can come in, as they provide a burst of colour without taking
up permanent space in the border. The other important issue is
sometimes harder to be disciplined about (not that I speak from
experience, you understand). That is: resisting the temptation to
buy plants on impulse – then making sure that they will do a good
job for us and not get lost in the garden, look underwhelming,
swamp or be swamped by other plants. An understanding of
your site and soil (and therefore which plants will grow well) will
be vital, but making a proper list might help prevent the ‘sweet
shop’ feeling when you go to the garden centre – there is a lot of
choice; and plants, like sweets, can be hard to resist. Steel yourself.
Winter
Structure from evergreens and skeletons.
Winter and early spring can be difficult, bleak times and we need
trusted friends, glimmers of hope and the comfort of reliable
stalwarts to get us through it. We’re stuck inside more – and
perhaps staring out at the garden, so plant for outlines and a
good overall structure. This will hold the borders together and
stop the garden looking empty – frosted effects can look

beautiful on hardy evergreens and interesting topiary shapes. Many
early flowering shrubs are scented – the flowers of early Viburnums
and Daphnes aren’t showy, but their perfume makes up for this,
so plant them near a path or by the front door, so that it isn’t just
the cat that benefits from their uplifting fragrance. Early bulbs, like
Snowdrops, Crocus and Narcissi will provide a joyful hint of spring.
Focal points
It is important to have focal points in the garden. They can come
from garden features and ornaments, but some plants have that ‘look
at me’ quality too. In summer dramatic blooms and exciting plant
combinations can become temporary focal points, but I find that a
relief from colour in the form of a well clipped evergreen shape, or
a demure container helps to anchor a scheme, or provide rhythm
and punctuation through the garden. Box balls are useful for this;
on a larger scale and as backdrops, evergreens like Osmanthus,
Viburnum (davidii and tinus) and Phillyrea are very effective.
Spring and summer
The ‘flower power’ months.
It is easier to fill the garden with colour in summer, but sometimes
just the sheer choice can get overwhelming. Before you splurge on
a gorgeous flowering plant, perhaps treat it as if it’s a candidate for a
job and ask some questions: How long will it flower for? What do
its leaves look like? Does the overall shape of the plant look good
once the flowers have faded? You are probably seeing your potential
purchase at its peak – it is wearing its best outfit for the interview
and looking very promising; it may well have run out of ideas by
the end of June. If you need some long lasting flowers, there are
some plants that just don’t know when to stop: usually these are
annuals, like Cosmos or tobacco plants, but there are some useful
perennials too, such as Verbena bonariensis, which, if it likes you,
will self-seed and pop up serendipitously all over your garden.

When there’s a temporary lull between the seasons, or an
area of the garden that needs a bit of pepping up, then a well
placed container full of flowers (bulbs, bedding or annuals)
can work wonders, or at least tide you over for a while. Large
pots and planters are a better bet in the summer months, as
they won’t need watering quite so often – pots dry out very
rapidly in hot weather and may need watering twice a day.
The great thing about containers is that they can be moved
out of the way once they’ve done their thing – or, if you (or
your holiday stand-in) have overlooked them to death.
Autumn
By autumn we could be running out of steam, which is a shame,
because our autumns seem to be getting longer and warmer, so
the show can go on until the frosts arrive. There are some lovely
late summer perennials to choose from and they team up well
with grasses, which are also looking good now. The trick is to
remember to leave room for them when you are planting up in
the spring – the autumn can seem a long way off from there,
especially when the garden centres are full of those irresistible
early flowering plants. Don’t forget to plant lots of bulbs too.
That was a rather quick romp through the seasons, but it
does pay to think ahead at this time of the year and make time
to plan for the later seasons. Gardeners are always looking to
the future; hopefully the seeds of some of that future are in
the ground already – but if they’re not yet, don’t worry: with
an idea of where the seasonal gaps are, a list of good plants,
some good growing weather and a fair wind behind us (on
second thoughts, no wind at all thanks), we can achieve
the gardening holy grail and enjoy a good looking garden
all year round. Enough of the theory, let’s get out there.

Connecting with Nature
In a world obsessed with technology, just how much time is devoted to outdoor learning at school?
Wealden Times asks four schools to talk us through the ways in which they immerse their pupils in the natural world

What does the school do to promote awareness of the
countryside? As we inhabit a wonderful 110 acre site here
in East Sussex, Claremont’s pupils are fully immersed in the
countryside throughout their school day. Furthermore, we teach
our pupils about the importance of reducing our impact on the
environment through the syllabuses in Geography and Science.
How do you try to connect students with the natural
world outside the classroom? At Claremont, we take
every opportunity to engage in the natural world. Whether
it is through writing haiku in our outdoor classroom by
the lake; or sitting on a bank sketching the rhododendron
bushes in Art; to exploring ecosystems for Science in the
woods; or learning new skills in our Forest School, our
pupils spend much of their time learning from nature.
How much time do students spend outside during the
school day? What outside space does the school offer?
It is very difficult to quantify just how much time our
children spend outside, but it is at least a third of the
timetable. The Nursery, Pre-Prep and younger members
of the Prep School enjoy weekly timetabled Forest School
sessions. This is a school site on which pupils can explore
World War One trenches for History, microclimates
in Geography and survey-sampling in Science.
Are there opportunities for students to participate in field
trips or extra-curricular activities that involve wildlife and its
preservation? The World Wildlife Fund is one of the school’s
House charities and we have raised money for a wide variety of
UK-based wildlife conservation charities. Our weekly Zoology
Club raises awareness of wildlife husbandry and preservation.

What does the school do to promote awareness of
the countryside? We have four fantastic school sites,
with green spaces in abundance, around our Games
pitches and Forest/Woodland Schools. Our youngest
pupils access Forest/Woodland School as part of their
curriculum and at our Epsom Pre-Prep, children look
after chickens. Our oldest children complete a River
Studies field project based at Box Hill’s Juniper Hall.
How do you try to connect students with the natural world
outside the classroom? Whenever we can, we take learning
outside into the natural environment. Our little ones investigate
mini beasts; our scientists run with parachutes on their backs
to learn more about resistance, studying birds in flight; our
geographers find examples of weathering around school; and
our historians re-enact the Battle of Hastings on the field.
How much time do students spend outside during the school
day? What outside space does the school offer? With an
AstroTurf, Netball Courts and a wealth of games pitches, there
is no shortage of playground spaces and sporting opportunities.
In addition to the Forest School, we have our own school
gardens, where children can grow fruit, vegetables and herbs.
Typically our early year’s children spend 60% of their day out
doors and our older Prep school children 2-3 hours a day.
Are there opportunities for students to participate in field
trips or extra-curricular activities that involve wildlife and
its preservation? For our younger children, exploration and
discovery is at the heart of their day. They visit the British
Wildlife Centre and Wisley Garden as plant explorers and to
see the butterflies. Locally they pond dip, pick pumpkins, and
go on a ‘Bear Hunt’ at Ladyland farm. Our older children
study the environment on Geography Fieldwork trips and
discover new bush-craft skills at our Forest School.

What does the school do to promote awareness of the
countryside? Based in the heart of the Kent countryside, we
are lucky to be surrounded by natural beauty and to have a
Forest School on site. Enabling children to use their senses and
explore the world around them provides a unique opportunity
to grow our pupils’ independence and creativity, as well as
to teach them a greater appreciation of the countryside.
How do you try to connect students with the natural

the School’s facilities and spaces. From Art classes on the
Head’s Lawn to working out averages from pumpkins in
a field, the pupils have the opportunity to embrace the
great outdoors. Trips to study centres further extend their
knowledge, for example, in rivers and their environs.

Sutton Valence Preparatory School is fortunate to
have extensive grounds, including playing fields,
AstroTurf, adventure playground and our own outdoor
swimming pool. All children have regular breaks during their
school day where they can play outside. Pre-Prep spend time
in Forest School with structured games and explorations
allowing children to engage with the natural environment.
Are there opportunities for students to participate in field

and its preservation? Many of our enrichment activities
include outdoor pursuits. Within the School, leadership
opportunities engage Science monitors in taking responsibility
for the care of the School animals. Our younger pupils
embrace the great outdoors enjoying their nature walks,
finding animal tracks and clues about the wildlife that makes
its home there. Our Year 6 Bushcraft experience sees our
pupils camping out and cooking food on open fires (under
supervision) as part of their final week at the Prep School.

Orderly lines
In light of the recent news story that shone the media spotlight on the uniform policy at
a Kentish academy, Susan Elkin debates the pros and cons of school uniform rules
I
sympathise with Alison Colwell, principal of Ebbsfleet
Academy, Swanscombe in Kent. She sent around 10% of
her students home on the first day of this term because
their skirts were too short. She wants her students to look
smart and business like and be prepared for work. But is a
very strict list of uniform rules, and the time it must take
to enforce them, really the best way forward? Wouldn’t
sensible guidelines and advice be a better way of working?
The British seem to be obsessed with school uniforms. Surely
black trousers and fancy badges foster better behaviour and a
sense of pride? Possibly in some cases. But if a uniform is to be,
well, uniform, then you need detailed rules and that’s a minefield.
As soon as a school creates a rigid uniform policy, it has to
enforce it. As Head of Upper School in a Kent school I had
to deal with a queue of uniform infringers every morning.
Boots instead of shoes was a common ‘problem’. Our no-boots
Head had decided that a shoe becomes a boot when it covers
the anklebone so I quite often ended up on hands and knees
on my office floor ascertaining where the student’s footwear
ended. And I worked in another school where the rule was
that ear studs must be no more than 5mm in diameter – you
can imagine the arguments that caused. Get your ruler out.
Of course I also worry about the surreal unsuitability for
21st century education of many school uniforms. Is it really
a good idea to send three-year-olds to school in a dry-clean
only cloth blazer and a cap? Should we persist in making
girls wear flappy, arguably dangerous, ties at a time when
ever fewer adult males wear them, let alone females?
I would include in my guidelines an observation that
expensive designer items are not suitable for school and work
discreetly with families who found this hard to deal with.
Some very successful schools – Hampton Court House
in London, Frensham Heights in Surrey, for example –
operate without school uniforms and everything is fine.
Discipline doesn’t collapse and anarchy doesn’t take over.
It’s the quality that counts and not the wrappings, as my
father used to say. And good behaviour is far deeper than
clothing. It is based on respect which has to be earned.

Enter the mineshaft if you dare! Continuous contact with
left hand wall, avoiding vertical drops, should ensure
your safe passage through the shaft.
06 Activate the Giant Wind Chimes
While navigating the red trail you will stumble across
our two Giant Wind Chimes. A gentle push will activate a
musical palindrome of the Quartal scale.
07 Picnic in a Thai Pagoda
You are very welcome to bring a picnic to The Sculpture

The heifers go straight to the front of the queue when calving starts
Excitement is rising at Coopers
Farm. It’s nine months now since
George the bull went out with the
cows and so not surprisingly we’re about
to start calving again. Before it kicks off,
the prospect of leaving a warm bed in the
middle of the night to trudge down to
the barn is still a memory rather than a
chilly reality and spirits are high.
I’ve prepared everything I need –
lubricant, ropes and iodine – so I just
need one of them to get on with it. We
always calve the heifers (the first-time
mums) first. Not only do they take
longer in labour, but they
are also more likely to need
assistance to deliver their
calf. Calves should come out
feet and head first, effectively
diving into the world. Once
the hooves appear and
having checked they are
front ones, if things don’t
progress it’s just a case of putting ropes
round their fetlocks and pulling as mum
pushes. However, often problems arise
because the calf is coming backwards,
upside down, sideways or with a foot
or head back in which case some clever
manipulation is required.
All too technical to describe here but,
once the business is done and hopefully
there’s a healthy calf on the ground, you
might imagine you could happily shuffle
back to that cosy bed. But oh no, the lot
of the bovine midwife is far from over.

a world that is far from hygienic – no
sterilised bottles for them. Immunity
comes from their mother’s colostrum –
the first thick milk which is stuffed with
antibodies – but the problem is they
can only absorb their full quota for the
first six or seven hours after being born.
After that, the lining of their gut changes
and they can no longer absorb the big
antibody molecules. So in the first few
hours they must consume about 2½
litres of colostrum and if they don’t then
the likelihood of them succumbing to
infection in the weeks ahead is high.
So imagine, dear reader,
it’s three in the morning,
you’ve pulled and tugged
the calf into the world
and left it with mum to
lick dry and encourage
to drink while you have
a cup of tea. It’s sooo
annoying then to return
to the shed to discover nothing has
happened, the wet calf is still lying where
you left it and the mother is nonchalantly
munching hay as though nothing much
has happened. This is most common
with heifers who are far from impressed
by the effort of giving birth and see no
good reason to pursue motherhood and
its associated responsibilities any further.
What then follows is an hour or so
of getting a slippery, wet, heavy (about
50kg) calf to stand up and then, crablike,
the two of you shuffle slowly toward
the udder of said heifer. By giving her a
bucket of grub you usually have about
10 minutes – when she’s more interested
in food than kicking you away – to get
the calf on and sucking. Colostrum is
extraordinary stuff, and once the feeble
calf has had a decent slug it acquires
super strength which enables it to persist
with mum who hopefully takes line of
least resistance and lets it drink.
Once all the heifers are done and
dusted the cows start calving. Sussex
cows will carry on producing healthy
calves well into their teens. Once you’ve
had six or seven calves, number eight is
likely to pop out fairly quickly and mum
also knows what is expected and will
immediately get on with the job-in-hand.
