WHAT IS READING?
The ability to read effectively is one of the most important
skills you can acquire if you are to cope with your work as
well as in various out-of-school activities.
Reading is related in various ways to other languages such
as: listening, speaking, and writing. Reading competence will
help you be informed, entertained, stimulated, and
comforted.
It is the transaction with text. The reader brings meaning to
a text in order to create meaning from it (Galda, 1993).
To read is to comprehend the meaning of something
written or printed by looking at and interpreting the written
or printed characters (Hank, 1983).
The Complete Reading Act
Perception
- Is the ability to recognize the word read and the
letters that made up the word.
Understanding
- Is the ability to tell what the word stands for in
relation to the other words or its context.
Interpretation
- Is the ability to react to the new knowledge which
the words convey in relation to past experiences.
Use
- Is the ability to apply what is read in appropriate
situations.
FUN FACT #1
5 Types of Reading Comprehension
Reading Comprehension is the ability to easily and
efficiently read text for meaning. It is the last step of the
reading process taught to children, after they’ve learned
phonics, fluency, and vocabulary. In of identifying the
sources of reading comprehension, a categorizing scheme
reveals four (4) important components or levels of
comprehension.
Literal
Gets facts or ideas from explicit or stated information.
Interpretative
Understand ideas from implicit information in text
inferential.
Critical Analysis
Identify ideas stated and implied which lead to conclusions
and judgements.
Application and Creation
Apply knowledge gained in a related situation; share
appreciation or knowledge gained in activities: oral
interpretation, dramatics, writing original selections, etc.
Characteristics of Reading Process
Reading is a complex process.
One’s reading performance is affected by a number of
correlates so that it is not easy to explain why an individual’s
reading performance may be satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
Reading is a two-way process.
Reading is communication between author and reader.
Communication gap between author and reader results to
poor comprehension. When that gap is bridged, better
communication takes place.
Reading is largely visual process.
Normally, good eyesight is required for good reading.
Reading is an active process. It is a thinking process.
A reader usually reacts physically, emotionally, or
intellectually with what he reads.
Reading makes use of linguistic.
A system which enables readers to be more effective
users of written language. A reader who has some
knowledge of the syntax, orthography, and morphology
(formation of words) of a language can interact more
effectively with the printed form of that language.
“Effective reading is partly dependent on the reader’s prior
knowledge or background experiences” – Romero (1985)
BENEFITS OF READING HABIT
Reading plays an important part in our daily living.
Through it, we learn or gather information. However not
everyone does it on a regular basis. Therefore you can start
practicing having a good reading habit after reading this from
now.
Experts say that when you stay mentally stimulated
(where in the brain continuously works) it lessens the tendency
to have Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Putting your brain at
work through reading is like exercising the brain. Just like what
the other parts of the body do.
Stress is renown in humans nowadays. But then, this can
lessen the progress of human at work. Reading is an effective
stress relaxant. Being carried away by a story puts the reader’s
mind in imagining. Which, therefore, puts you in a relaxing
state of mind.
Try surrounding yourself with the quietness as you read. Sit
back, relax, and enjoy.
AN EYE OPENER ON EYE STRAIN
If using a computer is an integral part of your daily task, then you may be prone to eye strain. Eye
strain is the most common yet widely ignored medical problem affecting most of the computer users.
The symptoms include soreness, redness, a dry or gritty sensation in the eyes, inflammation of the
eyelids and surrounding membranes, difficulty in focusing, blurred or double vision, dizziness, nausea,
and headache.
CAUSES OF EYE STRAIN
Most of the eye strain cases are closely related to prolonged exposure to the glare of
a video display terminal or computer. Recent studies reveal that 88 percent of people
who work in front of a personal computer for more than three hours a day suffer from
this problem.
While reading generally strains the eyes, working in front of a computer monitor
makes the problem worse because of the light in emits. The eyes are forced to
constantly readjust to the light of the monitor and the available light of the room.
The light coming out from a fluorescent bulb has a skewed lighting spectrum with
short waves that irritate the visual system and greatly affects the eyes. The glare which
is caused by the reflection of excessive light from the glass surface of the monitor
screen aggravates eye strain.
Normally, our pupils dilate when we try to focus our eyes on a written information.
But with the presence of glare from the monitor screen, our pupils constrict, and this
often leads to eye irritation and headache.
PREVENTING EYE STRAIN
Although eye strain is not through to have serious or long-term consequences, it is,
nevertheless, a source of great discomfort and a cause of decline in productivity. Taking
these measures may help prevent its occurrence.

Give your eyes a break. Every ten minutes, look awat from your screen for
10 seconds to relax your eyes.
Blink. Prolonged computer use may lead to dry eyes especially for those
wearing contact lenses. Blinking more often will lubricate your eyes to prevent
the dry, itchy, or burning feeling.
Position your monitor properly. The most relaxed viewing angle of the eye
is about 15 degrees below the horizontal plane which is slightt below eye level.
Eat right. Proper nutrition for the eyes is a must to keep a sharp eyesight and
prevent eye problems. Lutein, a yellow carotene that is concentrated in the
retinas, increases the eye's ability to focus more clearly and prevents damage of
the region between the eyes and iris known as macula. This nutrient can befound
in spinach, kale, collard greens, broccoli, and other dark green, leafy vegetables.
