Reception and Year 1 (2010-2011)
Autumn Term 2010
At the beginning of term, Mr Adam Coalman (from the Welsh Schools Initiative) and
his puppet Doug visited the school and read a parable from the New Testament to the
children – “Feast”. Glenda Clwyd a famous Welsh harpist performed a medley of folk
songs e.g. Migldi Magildi, Clychau Aberdyfi, Ar Lan y Môr. The children had the
opportunity to compare and contrast three different types of harp. They thoroughly
enjoyed listening to the sound of our national instrument and had an opportunity to
strum the strings. We were awarded our first Healthy School Accreditation Leaf in
October. Reception and Year 1 walked to the local library to borrow books on the
theme “This is Me”. Our school nurse, Alison Rees, came to talk to the children about
“Gerry the Germ” and the importance of hand hygiene. We visited Tesco in order to
buy yeast for our bread-making activities. Mr Adam Coalman led our Harvest Festival
at Oakfield. He chose to speak to the children about the five loaves and two fishes
and how one person can make a difference. We visited Willowbrook House Nursing
Home, St Mellons, where the children presented fruit and vegetables to the
residents. The residnets thoroughly enjoyed listening to the children singing and we
were invited back to sing Christmas carols in December. During November we visited
the Folk Museum in Sain Ffagan. The children were very interested in the different
houses e.g. Rhyd-y-Car cottages, the Water Mill and Llwyn-yr-Eos Farmhouse. They
took part in a picture treasure hunt. Reception and Year 1 visited our local Tesco to
purchase ingredients to prepare hot dogs to celebrate “Bonfire Night”. We were
invited to Bro Eirwg to watch a puppet production “Cwilt Siôn” (Wales Puppet
Theatre). In order to raise funds for Children In Need the children were allowed to
attend school in their own clothes (non-uniform). They took part in a variety of
activities and competitions. We had a very enjoyable and fun day and raised £30.40
for a worthy cause. At the beginning of December Mr Adam Coalman spoke to the
children about the significance of Christmas. We were invited to watch the dress
rehearsal of Oakfield’s Nursery and Reception concert. This year our Christmas
Service was held at St Mellons Parish Church. It was very atmospheric. The Revd
David Kellen gave the blessing at the end of the service. We returned to Willowbrook
Nursing Home to perform some of our Christmas carols, and were given a warm
welcome by both residents and staff. The children were given refreshments and we
were presented with a pile of Tesco School Vauchers. The term ended with a
Christmas Party and a visit from Father Christmas.
thoroughly enjoyed the celebrations. Both Reception and Year 1 had fun creating and
painting our 3D red dragon. Year 1 took part in our Handwriting Competition – copying
the verse “Dyn da oedd Dewi” in their best handwriting. To celebrate World Book Day
the children came to school dressed as characters from Welsh books. The children in
Year 1 each chose and copied the cover of a book. The Zoo Lab visited Pen y Pîl with
their Spring Life animals. The children were given the opportunity to handle, observe
and stroke different animals including a cockroach, stick insect, tarantula, and rat.
Mr Andrew McCarthy and his team of firemen came to educate the children about
the danger of playing with matches. The children were given the opportunity to try on
a fire fighter outfit and sit in the fire engine as well as using the hose pipe. Sophie
placement experience. The artist Catherine Ashill worked with the children to design
Our theme for the term was “The Farm”. At the beginning of term the children went
understanding of animals when we were invited to join Bro Eirwg for their Garden
Fete. After the Whitsun half term we celebrated healthy living week. The children
therefore we made promotional posters and enjoyed a golfing afternoon.
Ysgol Pen y Pîl held a Thanksgiving Service where the whole school sang and recited
various pieces for parents.
Sian Young from Ysgol Bro Eirwg came to visit and showed Year 2 how to map out a
story as modelled by Pie Corbett.
Individual photographs of the pupils were taken by the photography company
Colorfoto.
The whole school raised money for Children in Need by holding a fancy dress day.
Mr Coleman held a whole school assembly. He told the story of the five loaves and
two fishes to illustrate how one person can make a difference.
Year 2 attended a performance by the Splott Puppet Theatre Company at Ysgol Bro
Eirwg.
including a snake, cockroach, rat, stick insect, giant snail, frog and tarantula.
- 12 -
Mr Coleman visited and held an assembly on Christian values.
On National Book Day the pupils came to school dressed as their favourite character
from a book, and brought along a copy of the book. They explained about their choice
of character during a whole school assembly.
We received a visit from the local fire brigade who gave a safety talk and let us
explore their fire engine and wear their uniform.
The class celebrated Shrove Tuesday by making pancakes.
The theme of Lent continued through the spring term with the pupils learning the
Easter story and making Easter gifts, including decorating eggs, making a symbolic
cross necklace, making cards, and participating in an egg treasure hunt!
Summer Term
Topic: Africa.
The classroom was transformed with African tribal colours and artefacts. Many
African instruments were introduced as part of the music and continuous
development within lessons.
We enjoyed an African drumming session with Mr Davies when the pupils learnt about
rhythm and worked together to compose small music sentences.
Mr Coleman visited with his puppet, Doug the Dragon, to talk about why and how we
pray.
We had a whole-school Healthy Living week, including such activities as treasure
hunts around the school grounds, and skipping contests as well as a visit from Nurse
Alison Rees who talked about head lice. Margaret from the Smile Scheme reminded
the children of the importance of brushing their teeth. We also had special kits that
showed just how many germs we carry on our hands, and taught the correct hand
washing methods. Healthy Living Week also involved reminders about healthy diet,
lifestyle and sun safety.
The Year 2 Class Assembly was held to showcase some of the hard work they had
done throughout the year thus far, including recitals, acting performances, singing
and a puppet show, largely based on the current topic, Africa.
We visited Ysgol Bro Eirwg to attend Garddwest with stalls and farm animals to feed,
pet and hold.
The photography company Colorfoto came to take pictures of each class as a whole.
Year 2 pupils joined Year 3 pupils to take part in some Philosophy for Children
sessions which allowed them to discuss various questions and share their opinions.
We held a very enjoyable Sports day where everyone had the chance to compete in a
variety of track and field events.
Years 2 and 3 enjoyed a school trip to Bristol Zoo, where Year 2 had a further
chance to study animals native to Africa that they had learnt about in the classroom.
Ysgol Pen y Pîl Year 3 Yearly Report 2010 – 2011
Autumn Term 2010
We began the year celebrating an important sporting event in our area, The Ryder
Cup. We learnt about the rules of Golf, some of the sport's heroes and we had the
opportunity to practise our putting skills in class!
The parents were invited to our Harvest Assembly where Year 3 sang 'Cofia Bob
Amser' and recited a poem from memory before listening to Mr Coleman's service.
Our theme this term was 'The Celts' and we studied every aspect of their life – from
their roots to their way of life, from their religion to the clothes they wore. We
enjoyed getting dressed up and role playing 'Romans and Celts', we also painted blue
war paint onto our faces! We spent time comparing our modern houses with the Iron
Age Roundhouses, and we also designed and constructed a Hillfort in our 'Design and
Technology' lessons. We learnt about the Celtic Leaders and we also held a scientific
experiment to discover what type of material would be suitable for a Celtic warrior
to wear! During our studies of the Celts we developed our team work skills when we
worked in groups to design and create a Celtic Sword and Shield from 'mod-rock' on
which we painted intricate Celtic patterns! The highlight of our learning on the Celts
was our visit to the Celtic Village in Sain Ffagan. We were lead around the village by a
real-life Celt who told us stories around the fire and showed us first hand how to
grind wheat!
In November we raised money for 'Children in Need' by wearing our own clothes to
school, we also played many games such as guess the number of beads in a jar and
name the teddy.
We celebrated Diwalli, the Hindi Festival of Light by reading the story of Rama and
Sita and cooking some traditional food – we enjoyed the tasting very much!
During our Science lessons we investigated materials, especially those that insulate.
We learnt what constitutes a fair test by conducting experiments to find which
materials were the best thermal insulators and how to read thermometers correctly.
Our Christmas Service was held in St Mellons Church; this year, we sang carols and
acted the Nativity which really put us in the Christmas spirit!
Spring Term 2011
Our theme this term was 'The Body'. We studied the body's organs and functions,
our senses, the skeleton and how to keep it all healthy.
In our Art lessons we modelled some organs out of clay and painted them – they
looked pretty gory! We also looked at Cezanne’s still life work, it was during this time
we emulated his work using pastels and developed our observational drawing skills.
We learnt how to keep our bodies healthy and the effect exercise has on our hearts.
We had great fun relaxing and increasing our heart rates, timing the beats per
minute and graphing the results!
We put our senses to the test when we smelt and tasted some hidden foods – some
sweet and some very sour! Then we chose our favourite fruits to design and create a
- 16 -
Smoothie. We created a recipe, thought of an appropriate name and designed the way
it looked!
As we studied the Celts last term we looked at the Romans this term to find out why
they came to Britain. We were interested in the conflict with the Celts, what kind of
people they were and what remains today! We did research in books and on the web
to create our own 'Fact File' on the Romans where we had complete control over the
content!
The Fire Brigade visited us in school and we had fun sitting in the engine, dressing up
in some of their clothes and learning how important their work is.
The school was also full of bugs and creatures when 'Zoo Lab' visited. Some of us
were very brave holding all sorts of exotic creatures!
We celebrated 'World Book Day' by dressing up as our favourite character from a
book and attending the school Eisteddfod at Ysgol Bro Eirwg.
As we are a new school we had the rare opportunity to design our school badge! The
artist Catherine Ashill came in to work with us to develop our ideas to create the
perfect badge! We are very proud of it!
Summer Term 2011
The theme for this term was 'Water' which tied in perfectly with the class having
swimming lessons at Eastern Leisure Centre. We went every morning for a fortnight
and we developed our skills while having fun with our friends!
We learnt about the 'Water Cycle' and we succeeded in recreating a working model in
the classroom. We learnt about the importance of water and its symbolism in religious
ceremonies such as Baptisms.
We studied under-water life by looking in books and online to create a large-scale
colourful information display. During our language lessons we studied 'Branwen' a
Welsh legend that involves water. She had a brother who was a giant and we planned,
designed, created and tested boats for all of his army to cross the Irish Sea safely.
We studied the potter Morgen Hall’s work in our Art lessons which inspired us to
create intricate, colourful pieces of pottery.
In our 'Heath and Fitness Week' we spent time orienteering, making a healthy pizza
from local produce, learnt about safety in the sun, and had a look at the miles our
food travels before we eat it! We had an excellent session of 'Street Dance', and
thoroughly enjoyed Mr Eifion Davies' visit to school to lead a drumming session with
us!
We learnt the importance of recycling during the summer term and went around the
school picking up litter with the litter pickers. We expanded our investigation to the
local area and we mapped and marked the areas with the most rubbish. 'Reduce,
Reuse, Recycle' was the inspiration and the message we chose for out first class
assembly to show off our talents to our parents. We also acted out the Welsh Legend
'Cantre'r Gwaelod' and sang two contemporary pop songs in each language.
We were invited to the Garden Fete at Ysgol Bro Eirwg where we spent the morning
eating chocolate-dipped fruit, playing games and petting all sorts of animals!
- 17 -
Mrs Angela Hill came in to our class many times over the summer term to support us
in developing our 'Philosophy for Children' skills. We conduct the sessions in our class
where we had the opportunity to discuss, listen and give our opinion on some big
issues or ideas.
To end our year we had a fantastic trip to Bristol Zoo! We had a day to remember
looking at a variety of water and dessert animals.
Assessment - Record Keeping and Reporting
Our aim at Pen y Pîl is for assessment to be an effective and practical way of
ensuring and recording progress in the national curriculum and Skills Framework.
During the year we have:
Continued with the good practice of noting the learning objectives at the
beginning of each lesson and recording them at the beginning of each
piece of work
- 21 -
Continued to set individual targets for each child, agreeing new ones and
also setting success criteria at KS2
Introduced specific focused assessments in the core subjects in order to
assess each child’s level and to target areas for improvement
Provided opportunities for self-assessment and peer assessment
 Tracked progress
Assessment of learning and assessment for learning
Help INSET meetings at Bro Eirwg to ensure that all members of staff are
familiar with marking and levelling children’s work according to the levels of
the National Curriculum
Continued training for the implementation of Assessment in the Curriculum
2008 and the Foundation Phase.
During the year we have used subject led field notes to track individual
learning and decide on the way forward.
We have improved the format of our long and short term planning to include
opportunities for more effective assessment procedures and to ensure consistency
of approach.
To support assessment and record keeping we have a marking policy and keep
field notes for classroom observations. This information then informs the day to day
teaching and learning. We also note any significant developments in any aspect
of the pupil. Every adult involved with the pupils’ learning becomes involved with
the assessment process.
Links with parents are reinforced with a home-school link book that includes a
reading record.
Efforts are made to ensure that written reports to parents contain comments of
achievement in all national curriculum subjects as well as comments on efforts and
attitude. The reporting of the assessments at the end of KS1 had comparative
national information as supplementary information to parents and meetings were
arranged to help them understand their child’s attainment.
We hold three parents’ evenings per school year to give parents the opportunity to
speak to their child’s class teacher.
Our data is analysed and compared with data from other schools both locally and
nationally. The results of teacher assessments are used to identify clear targets for
school improvement.
within the school.
SEN budget from the LEA:
School Action Budget
School Action Plus Budget
Matrix funding for general learning difficulties
Matrix funding for individual pupils
Total funding for the year 2011-12 = 11,000
Staffing arrangements:
Mrs Angharad Stevenson is the SEN Co-ordinator. She is in school two days a week
to support children on School Action and School Action Plus.
The LEA Achievement Service:
The school receives sessions from the Educational Psychologist, Mrs Emma
Humphries.
During the coming year, we hope to receive support from specialist teachers from
the Achievement Service.
This year the school has benefitted from the input of Mrs Julie Elliott, the school’s
Partnership Co-ordinator. She has worked closely with the Lead Teacher/ALN Coordinator
to look at ways of expanding the enriching the SEN provision.
The school works closely with the Health Service, Social Services and Voluntary
Services whenever necessary.
Resources:
Effective use is made of all available resources including human resources e.g.
Teachers, Teaching Assistants, external support and the contribution of parents
and friends for the benefit of the pupils at home and in school.
The school also makes good use of resources e.g. reading schemes and
programmes e.g. Sioni’n Siarad, STARS, and SAIL.
- 29 -
Special Educational Needs Policy:
The current SEN Policy was presented to the Governing Body in March 2011.
Monitoring the Policy:
A special effort is made in Ysgol Pen y Pîl to ensure that the necessary provision is
available for any child with SEN. Everyone who teaches pupils with SEN is aware of
their needs and the importance of making suitable provision of SEN pupils in their
care.
The success of the policy is reflected in the way that every pupil with SEN is
included in the academic, cultural and social life of the school. Pupils with SEN join
in school activities e.g. concerts, eisteddfodau and athletics.
Provision for pupils with SEN will be monitored effectively by the Governing Body,
the Headteacher and the SEN Co-ordinator.
Parents/Carers:
Parents contribute by working closely with the school staff and sharing information
regularly with the school.
Gosod Targedau Ar Gyfer Gwelliant
Yn Nhachwedd 2011 fe gyflwynodd yr Ysgol gadarnhad o dargedau canlyniadau
asesu’r Cwricwlwm Cenedlaethol i’r A.A.Ll.
Setting Targets For Improvements
In November 2011, the school submitted a confirmation of national curriculum
targets to the LEA.
Disgyblaeth
Mae gennym bolisi Disgyblaeth fanwl iawn sydd yn cael ei ddiweddaru yng nghyd
â’n polisi Bwlian ym mis Gorffennaf 2012
Mae pwyslais mawr ar agweddau positif ein disgyblion er mwyn iddynt dyfu mewn
hunan barch a hyder. Rydym yn cynnal gwasanaethau Canu Clod tua 4 gwaith y
tymor. Fe gaiff pob aelod o’r staff y cyfle i roi sêr yn troi’n bwyntiau tîm ag fe gaiff
y tîm buddugol ei gyhoeddi yn y gwasanaeth clod. Mae’r gydnabyddiaeth i
ymddygiad clodwiw yn ystod y gwasanaeth arbennig yn boblogaidd iawn.
Ein nod fel Ysgol yw creu amgylchfyd ddiogel a hapus i bob plentyn.
Discipline
We have a very detailed Discipline policy reviewed together with our Bullying
policy in July 2012.
We believe in highlighting the positive attitudes and achievements of our pupils in
order for them to grow in confidence and self-worth. For this reason, we hold Merit
assemblies 4 times a term. Every member of staff has the opportunity to award
merit stars to children who demonstrate particular respect for the 5 Golden Rules.
These stars convert into team points. The winning team is announced in each merit
assembly. The exemplary attitudes and performances acknowledged at each
assembly prove very popular.
Our aim as a school is to create a happy and safe environment for every child.
Arrangements for making complaints about the curriculum
Gall rhieni gysylltu gyda’r pennaeth mewn gofal os oes ganddynt unrhw gwestiwn
neu bryderon am y cwricwlwm.
If parents have any queries or concerns regarding the curriculum, they may
contact the headteacher in charge at any time.
Cysylltu â’r Gymuned
Mae’r berthynas dda rhyngom â’r gymuned yn parhau. Mae’r plant yn ymweld â
lleoedd ac yn cyfarfod â phobl sydd o ddiddordeb ac sy’n berthnasol i’w gwaith
yn rheolaidd.
- 36 -
Trefnir ymweliadau addysgol gan yr athrawon i gefnogi’r cwricwlwm. Mae’r
Heddlu, Heddlu’r Gymuned, Swyddogion Diogelwch y Ffordd, Tîm Diogelwch Tân ,
Nyrs yr Ysgol a gweinidogion lleol yn ymweld â’r ysgol yn rheolaidd. Rydym yn
derbyn cefnogaeth oddiwrth amryw fusnesau lleol. Mae’r Ysgol yn gobeithio cael
defnydd da o’r Ganolfan Hamdden leol ac elwa o weithgareddau allgyrsiol
Menter Caerdydd trwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg.
Rydym yn ffodus i gael cymorth gwirfoddolwraig, Mrs Lee, yn gyson i drefnu
gwerthu gwisg ysgol a gobeithiwn argymell rhieni a ffrindiau’r ysgol i wrando’n
gyson ar ddarllen.
O fewn y flwyddyn nesaf, gobeithiwn ddatblygu partneriaeth â cholegau, Menter
Caerdydd, yr Urdd a Dragon Sports. Rydym wedi cynhyrchu y Cylchlythyr cyntaf
ac yn argymell sefydlu Cymdeithas Rhieni er mwyn i rhieni a ffrindiau feithrin y
syniad o gymuned trwy fynychu achlysuron cymdeithasol i godi arian ar gyfer
adnoddau ychwanegol i’r Ysgol. Ers Chwefror 2012, sefydlwyd clwb carco ar ôl
ysgol ym Mhen y Pîl.
Community Links
The good relationships between the school and the community continue. The
children visit places of interest and meet people in the locality on a regular basis.
Educational visits are organised by the teachers to support the curriculum. The
Police, Community Police, Road Safety Officers, Fire Safety Team, School Nurse
and local ministers of religion visit the school on a regular basis. We benefit from
the support of various local businesses. The school hopes to make good use of the
local Leisure Centre amenities and benefit from extra curricular activities through
the medium of Welsh, provided by Menter Caerdydd.
We are fortunate to have the assistance of a volunteer, Mrs Lee on a regular basis
to manage the selling of school uniform and we hope to encourage friends and
parents of the school to assist with listening to readres.
Within the next year, Pen y Pîl hopes to develop partnerships with Universities,
Dragon Sport, yr Urdd and Menter Caerdydd. We have already produced the first
Newsletter and are encouraging a Parents’ Association in order to enable parents
and friends to foster a sense of community through attending a variety of social
events to raise money towards extra resources and provision for the school. From
February 2012, an after school club has been established at Pen y Pîl.
Ysgol a Rhieni
Mae croeso i rieni ddod i’r ysgol a gobeithio y llwyddir i gynnal y cysylltiadau cryf
rhwng y cartref a’r ysgol. Yr ydym yn parhau i annog cyswllt anffurfiol rhwng rhieni
a’r staff addysgu, ond os ydych yn dymuno sgwrs eithaf maith, a fyddai’n bosibl i
chi wneud apwyntiad er mwyn peidio amharu ar drefn yr ysgol.
Cynhelir ymgynghoriadau yn ystod tymhorau’r Hydref a’r Gwanwyn a
phrynhawn/noson agored yn ystod tymor yr Haf. Bu nifer dda o rieni ym mhob un
o’r cyfarfodydd hyn.
School and Parents
Parents are welcome in the school and it is hoped that the strong links between
home and school will be maintained. We continue to encourage informal contact
between parents and teaching staff, but if you should require a longish discussion
would you please make an appointment to avoid disrupting the smooth running of
the school.
Mae nifer absenoldebau â chaniatâd yn gostwng - dylid ystyried roedd gan yr
ysgol ddisgybl â phroblemau dwys a oedd a chanran uchel o absenoldeb yn
ystod 2009/2010, ac nid yw’r awdurdod yn ystyried hyn fel unrhywbeth ond
Absent
without
permission
The number of absences with permission is falling, but it should be borne in mind
that during 2009/2010 we had a pupil with severe needs who had a high
percentage of absences. The authority considers this as absence with permission.
Holidays during term time continue to boost the number of absences with
permission, but the school is obliged to consider up to 10 sessions as a permitted
absence.
Last winter’s weather is partly responsible for the increase in absences without
permission; parents often kept children at home and did not contact the school to
explain the absence. The school makes a great effort to monitor absences,
targeting frequent non-attenders, contacting parents and involving the local
authority where appropriate.
