A Message from Admission Possible Leadership:
Admission Possible’s ninth year of operation was filled with exciting firsts.
In our first out-of-state expansion, 60 low-income high school juniors
successfully completed year one of our Greater Milwaukee program. The
President of the United States drew national attention to our work at a
White House event highlighting innovative nonprofit solutions to serious
domestic challenges. An eight-month McKinsey & Company consulting
engagement helped us complete a national growth plan for expansion
beyond two sites, and we were awarded two national awards of excellence
from associations representing the highest standards in the college access
field.
However, none of this compared to our excitement in reaching more than
5,600 Twin Cities and Milwaukee low-income students with our high school
and college programming in a single year while maintaining top results. In
2008-09, juniors increased their average ACT score by more than 22 percent,
and 98 percent of our students gained admission to college!
Our students’ achievements and the growth of our program during such a significant economic recession would not have been
possible without the dedication and passion of our many partners and funders, including the generous $1.5 million multi-year
growth gift from the William W. and Nadine M. McGuire Family Foundation. We are grateful for the unwavering support for
our vision of a day when the future of America’s children is determined solely by their talent, motivation and effort.
Looking to the immediate future, we are eager to answer President Obama’s call to grow our innovative program to cities across
the nation. Under the guidance of our Board of Directors and the efforts of our dedicated Admission Possible team, we will
continue to implement our national growth strategy in 2009-10 to provide students across the country the support they need
to gain admission to college.
With thanks and appreciation,
Admission Possible services, students
engage in eight hours of community
service annually. Student applicants
should meet the following
requirements:
•
•
•
Qualify as low-income
GPA of 2.0 or higher
“I never thought about going to college
before Admission Possible. My coaches
taught me the benefits of college and,
thanks to them, I will be going.”
Irvin learned about Admission Possible from
a teacher who thought he would be a perfect
fit for the program. After some thought, Irvin
decided to apply because he didn’t know much
about the ACT exam and wanted help identifying
scholarships.
In his junior year of Admission Possible, Irvin
focused on preparing for the ACT exam. From
his baseline to his final test in April, he raised
his score by an impressive six points. Along
with his hard work, he credits his coach Alex
for the improvement. “She knew me so well,”
Irvin said. “She could always tell when I had a
problem and would help me solve it.”
Irvin will be the first member of his family to
attend college and is already telling his younger
brothers that as soon as they are old enough,
they need to join Admission Possible.
“I am really proud of myself – for awhile,
I didn’t know if I would make it to college,
and I still don’t know how I would have
without Admission Possible.”
Sha spent her freshman year of high school in
English Language Learner classes and didn’t
know if college would ever be an option for
her. Neither of her parents had gone, so she
wasn’t certain how to get there.
Sha joined Admission Possible and immediately
hit it off with her coach Alli who guided her
through every step of the college application
process. Alli worked closely with Sha her senior
year, even on weekends and after session, to
perfect her applications to eight colleges. One
by one, letters of acceptance arrived from
every school Sha had applied to, and she and
Alli celebrated each time.
“St. Kate’s just ended up being the right fit for
me because it’s affordable and they really care
about women of color,” Sha said after her first
semester. “I am very excited to be here, and it
has been a wonderful experience so far.”
“As a sophomore you need to be thinking
about college. If you slack off at all, it’s
really hard to get back on track.”
During Anthony’s sophomore year, a group of
Admission Possible seniors came to his class
to talk about college. At the time, he mostly paid
attention to their suggestions on how to prepare
for college, but by the end of sophomore
year, their message was really beginning to sink
in. If he was going to go to college, he would
need to start working now.
Anthony applied for Admission Possible at
the end of his sophomore year because he had
heard that the program helped students understand
the college application process. “I really
want to go to college; it’s important for me and
my family,” Anthony said. “I am willing to do
what it takes, but I need help getting there.”
After Anthony tackles the ACT exam and college
application process, he hopes to go to
Florida International University to study business
or medicine.
“Admission Possible opened a lot of doors for
me. If it weren’t for the program, I wouldn’t
be where I am today.”
Amber had aspirations of college from a young
age – her mom worked multiple jobs to support
her family and Amber knew that a college education
was her chance for something different.
Admission Possible provided the campus visits,
ACT test preparation and college application assistance
that all put Amber on track to receive
a full scholarship from the University of St.
Thomas after high school. The transition was
difficult at first, but determined to succeed, Amber
threw herself into school work and campus
life. In the course of four years, she served as a
resident advisor, studied and volunteered abroad
and was involved in numerous campus groups.
Upon graduating from college in 2009, Amber
accepted a full-time position in Human Resources
at Travelers. After completing two summer internships
with the company, she knew it was the
right fit. “I love the company and the variety that
my job offers,” Amber said. “So much of what I
learned in college helps me in my career today.”
Inspired by her fellow Corps members, she had
also adopted Admission Possible’s philosophy
of doing “whatever it takes” to support students
in reaching their dreams of college.
When the opportunity arose for Aileen to be
part of Milwaukee’s start-up in her second
term, she jumped at the chance. In addition to
planning events, Aileen coached the first-ever
cohort at St. Joan Antida High School. She
walked her juniors through the college application
process, and under her guidance, they
raised their ACT scores significantly.
“Being responsible for coaching a group of
students toward college against all the obstacles
they face really drew out my leadership
skills,” Aileen said. She credits her time with
Admission Possible for affirming her commitment
At Admission Possible, students and staff are
encouraged to embody the traits of an idealistic
Admission Possible students and team members
work to send forth “ripples of hope” in their communities.
“It is from
he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and
crossing each other from a million different
“Admission Possible is self-renewing. As
program alumni succeed, they will come back
to their communities and inspire younger
generations to continue their education.”
The Perlmans, who have long been active in
making higher education available to people
who might not otherwise have the opportunity,
began donating to Admission Possible in its first
program year.
In 1999, as the retired CEO of Ceridian, Larry
received a presidential appointment to chair the
21st century workforce congressional commission
and address the anticipated shortage of
high technology workers in the United States.
The committee worked with legislators, businesses
and public-private partnerships to close
the opportunity gap. Generally aware of the
challenges, Larry was stunned to learn through
this process how many people were not prepared
to obtain skilled jobs.
“The most fundamental problem in our society
is lack of education, which is a prerequisite for a
future of productive work,” Larry said. “Admission
Possible has proven itself an effective way
to address the education deficit and we hope it
becomes a model for other communities.”
“I find it deeply rewarding to support
Admission Possible’s goal of getting kids
over the finish line and into college. My race
lasts a few short days, while these kids have
embarked on the race of a lifetime.”
-Patrick O’Shaughnessy
For some students, gaining admission to college
seems like an unattainable goal. With
these students in mind, two friends, Patrick
O’Shaughnessy and Scott Penticoff, set a goal
of their own to show students that with hard
work and determination they can accomplish
goals beyond their imaginations.
In November 2008, Patrick and Scott ran 100
miles over five straight days through the Himalayan
Mountains – a challenge neither would
have thought possible just a year before. After
months of training, not only did they achieve
their goal, they raised a significant amount of
money to support Admission Possible.
“The most fulfilling rewards in life are those
that come from accomplishing the most physically
or mentally challenging goals imaginable,”
Scott said. “I admire the young people who are
boldly tackling the goal of college when no
one in their family has traveled that path.”
