such as Khechari.
The first step in Tantra is to know the
limits and strengths of our body and
mind. The next step is to practice
some techniques for expanding
consciousness and liberating dormant
energy. During the practice of Tantra
the powerful mathematical forms of
yantras and mandalas are used
continuously. Yantra (literally
translated as instrument) represents
aspects of Divinity through interlocking
metrics of geometry. Mandalas are
charts, which represent the entire
cosmos. Symbolically the Mandala is a
microcosm of this universe from the
perspective of the human being.
According to Carl Jung it is a
representation of the unconscious self
- memories, dreams, reflections.
Why Tantra?
The modern world gives us many
pleasures, but people still seem to be
unhappy. People seeking happiness and
stress release turn to yoga and
24
meditation. However, meditation can
leave people feeling frustrated
because they cannot control their
minds in the early stages of practice.
The average person may find
meditation difficult if they try it before
they have gained control of their body
and breath through asana and
pranayama. Only once this control is
gained will meditation be successful.
Tantra offers a scientific way to have
transcendental experiences. To be
successful in this path you should
practice for at least three months
under the guidance of an expert
teacher. It is believed the energy will
pass from the guru to the student
directly while they practice together.
When a guru (teacher) passes the
energy gained by many years of
constant practice to his student, he
activates their Mooladhara chakra.
The student then practices chakra
meditation and chants bija mantras to
raise Kudalini upward. The practice will
continue until the Kundalini force
reaches the Sahasrara chakra. At this
point, the practitioner will experience
cosmic consciousness.
All Life is
Based on Yoga
Karen Byrne
Through the eloquent
and beautifully-told
story of our relationship
with consciousness, a
teacher of vast knowledge came to
guide us through the myriad of
sciences, human experience and
potential. Here and now, this process is
taking place. Here and now, we are
catapulted into an inevitable
movement of greater awareness which
is changing our relationship with our
selves, our lives, our planet and the
universe, constantly.
Sraddhalu Ranade from the Auroville,
the Ashram of the Sri Aurobindo
Society in Pondicherry, India came to
Hong Kong recently and gave us a
glimpse into possibilities beyond our
current existence through a three-part
series of two-hour talks at the Hong
Kong Central Library in September. He
tapped into his knowledge and
experience as a teacher of many
disciplines to explain an idea of
consciousness we may be aware of but
perhaps are not yet able to access.
This consciousness started on the first
day with “The Secret of Success” which
asked listeners to question what our
inner truth was. The answer, we were
reminded, is love, peace, and seeking
connection with a deeper truth. While
we know these aspirations are evident,
the daily activities of human life make
it difficult to fulfill them. If we were to
realise our true nature, the simple
