7th Annual
“Out & About Autism”
5k/run 5k walk for Autism Awareness
Yes, another wonderful event! The weather was perfect,
a bit warm, but we’ll take it. Over 750 dedicated
runners, walkers & supporters came out to enjoy the
morning, raising over $25,000 for our chapter events
& programs. WOW, what can we say?...we can say
THANKS from the bottom of our hearts! The money
raised at this event helps to fund our bowling league,
Yoga program & other recreational events and programs
throughout the counties. The “Out & About”
grant is available for recreational events/outings offered
by local school district classrooms, which provide
recreational community field trips to our students
on the ASD spectrum. This grant is available all year
long. Please see our website for the application.
Our generous pledge donors and sponsors make this
event the BEST community autism awareness event
our counties can hope for! Our kids feel accepted and
welcomed because of such an outpouring of love and
kindness. Our volunteers were once again, SUPER;
We can’t do this without you... you know who you are!
A special thanks to those of you who registered online
and added an additional donation along with your
entry. THIS was such a welcome surprise! Thanks
for your patience with the online registration process;
www.macombasa.org
we promise it will be smoother next year. Please go
to our website for the link for the BEAUTIFUL photos
taken by MaryJo Boughton and Kathy Winkler, two
amazing photographers who captured the day! Thank
you gals!
Also, please support the companies and local sponsors
listed above, and give a hug to all your family
members and friends who time and time again help to
accept and love our children.
See you next year, June 15, 2013!

President’s Letter
Greetings to everyone!
The chapter is gearing up for a full fall schedule of events and meetings, and we
want all of you to be a part of it! But before I move onto our “happenings” I would
like to give a big THANK YOU with heartfelt gratitude to three of our “outgoing”
board members, Amy Wallace, Robert Auten and Lisa Zanoni. Amy, Robert and
Lisa have served on our board for several years, and they will be greatly missed.
Their dedication and hard work is a direct reflection of the caring and devoted
parents they are. They will continue to support our chapter and our kids behind
the scene, and we wish them well! Don’t go far, because we will “pull” you back in
SOON! You are needed!
Now, the fall; our bowling league is again continuing in September on Tuesday
evenings, at Kingswood Lanes. Consult our website for the next session after
Thanksgiving. Also, our yoga sessions will start up again on Friday nights at the
MISD on Garfield with Lisa from BeLightful Yoga, as she offers parents, children
and young adults an opportunity to learn to “de-stress” and help with sensory
integration and anxiety. Fridays in October! mark your calendars and bring your
yoga mats! BIGGER ROOM this session, so there is lots of room. Also, we want
to remind everyone that MOST of our events are free to members, and are offered
at a very low nominal amount for non-members. We of course want to expand our
membership, so please consider joining our chapter. $25 for a year membership
per family is all it takes to be part of this dedicated, supportive group of families &
professionals. OK, that’s my commercial...
So, I hope to see some new faces this fall and reconnect with some friends who
have been focusing on other commitments. WE NEED you to come back and
share your journey with our new families of recently diagnosed children. Our chapter
is also focusing on becoming a stronger chapter connected to the National
Chapter at www.autism-society.org. We continue to meet the third Thursday of
each month at St. Ephrems Catholic Community, at 17 mile & Dodge Park. COME
join us for some great talk, and a listening ear. DO not hesitate to call our chapter
at 586-445-4915 with your concerns and needs, and we will give it our best shot at
being there for you. THANK you also for your support on our most recent “Out &
About” run/walk at Stony Creek, which was a tremendous example of our families
and friends ability to bring “autism awareness” to our surrounding communities.
Walk With Us In the Romeo Peach Festival Parade on
Road and Van Dyke at 11am. We will take a shuttle
bus to the staging area. The parade starts at 1 pm.
A Capella for Autism Supports
Out & About Walk
James Pecar, cousin of Carrie Krycia, presented the chapter
with a generous donation check that was the result of a
fundraising event James and his student a cappella group
put on in central Florida this past May.
James is a recent graduate of Stetson University in Deland,
Florida, majoring in Vocal Music Education. While studying
at Stetson, James founded and directed the university’s
first all male, student-run a cappella ensemble in September,
2008. During their spring tour of central Florida, their
group, Hat Trick, dedicated the tour to Autism Awareness
and designated the Macomb County ASA as the recipient of
a portion of their total sales.
The “A Cappella for Autism” project is going to be an ongoing
fundraiser for Hat Trick. The group of about 12 students
will continue supporting autism and the Autism Society of
America through concert tours and merchandise sales.
They all really came together to support autism and have all
generously given of their time and talent.
James has a long history of supporting Autism Awareness.
He organized a student band concert the summer of his
freshman year and donated the proceeds to the Macomb
County Chapter. He has done many school projects to educate
and bring awareness about autism. Several summers
ago, he built a sensory garden for his cousin, Carrie, which
she enjoyed for many years.
You can go to the Hat Trick website, http://www.hattrickacappella.com/
to see more of the group, listen to some awesome
music and view pictures of the group proudly wearing
their Autism Awareness pins.
We can’t thank James and his “crew” enough for all they did
for our kids through their concerts and their committment to
autism awareness!
Aspergers Syndrome
And
Everybody
Neurotypical? I know no neurotypicals. Everybody’s mind is just as unique to them as their fingerprints. I do
know plenty of non-autistic people. In fact, most people I come in contact with are non-autistic. Most of my
family and friends are non-autistic.
Should I discriminate against these non-autistics? I noticed that some people with AS have developed a bad
attitude towards the people that they are calling neurotypicals. I can understand why, I have suffered horrible
abuse and discrimination at the hand of some non-autistics. I have been ridiculed, beaten, institutionalized,
and drugged because of my AS. Certain family members will not welcome me into their
homes because I have AS.
I cannot keep a job because of my AS.
I am finding that many AS people share stories similar to mine. For these reasons I am seeing AS people who
want to socialize only with other AS people or not to socialize at all. I am seeing groups forming online that say
autistic people only and strictly no neurotypicals. These people with AS are saying that they feel “safe” socializing
with one another. These people with AS even put quite lengthy stories on their websites explaining all the
abuse and discrimination that they suffered at the hands of the neurotypicals. Some AS people even profess
that they want revenge for the abuse and discrimination that they suffered at the hand of neurotypicals.
I have AS. Do I want revenge for what has happened to me? Do I want to discriminate against the non-autistic
population? Do I feel safe socializing only with other autistic people?
The answer for me is none of the above! I have no desire for revenge. I have no desire to discriminate against
the non-autistic population and I want to socialize with all kinds of people. My desire is peace on earth and a
brotherhood of man! You are my family, all of you, and one day I look forward to meeting you. I love you. That
is why I do this work.
Listen my friends; I know how hard times are for everybody right now. Let us not waste any more time with silly
things like discrimination and prejudices. Yes, I am speaking to non-autistics and autistics alike. Let us have
love amongst ourselves. I know that this is not always easy, especially when we feel that somebody has hurt
us. However, ask yourself, what kind of person do I want to be? Do I find any joy in hate or revenge? Do I want
to become part of the problem or work towards the solution?
I think that deep down inside you know the answer.
There is great joy in love. Love always looks for the good in people. Yes, we all have our undesirable qualities.
Let’s face it, nobody is perfect. Instead of focusing on our mistakes and imperfections, let’s always try to focus
on somebody’s good qualities. There is good in everybody.
As far as normal goes, there is no normal. We are all different and that is delightful. I am thankful that people
are different from one another. I see a world of people of all colors, cultures, ages and abilities working together
side by side and loving one another. This is what I see for everybody!!!
P.S. One parent asked me at a meeting if I can love. The answer is yes. I may not always know how to express
this love or sometimes I might seem cold or offensive to people that I love. However, I do love them very
much. I also love the whole human race. that is why I do this work. I am being motivated by love to want to try
to help people, autistic and non autistic alike. I hope that this will provide some reassurance to family of autistic
loved ones who wonder if their autistic loved one can love them in return.
I may not always show it; however, I love my family very much.
I hope that you enjoyed reading this article as much as I enjoyed writing it,
Love, your friend,
AUTISM SOCIETY NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2012
By Annette Duda
The National Conference was held in beautiful San Diego this year. As always National is working on many
things to assist the Chapters. They held a meeting with the Society Assembly which has representatives from
each State and discussions were held regarding what the Chapters expect from National. It was an
overwhelming response that we want National to be more of a voice for Autism. To let people know that the
Autism Society is the first point of contact and also that National develop a comprehensive Marketing & PR
Campaign including TV, Radio, Website & Social Media. They are also considering doing Training for Boards,
i.e. Canned Presentations about Autism that Chapters can use and topics such as ‘How to Run Support
Meetings’ and ‘How to Talk or Write to Legislators’ and more.
At the Chapter Leaders Meeting, Autism Society President, Scott Badesch told us that the Autism Society is in
good financial shape. They have made many changes at National and the Board is working very hard and have 4new
Staff, with 3 on the Spectrum. They are in the conceptual stages of a campaign called “Autism Is…” and they are looking
for success/victory stories. More information will be forthcoming.
The Autism Society is requiring all Chapters to meet Standards that have been established by National. They
want all Chapters to be consistent with services across the country using a Tiered System. Our Chapter has met Tier One
and is in the final stages of completing Tier Two. Many Chapters have been unable to meet these
Tiers and will no longer be a part of National. Again, they are looking for consistency from State to State.
Also in the works, they would like to have a 24/7 Contact Center, to give more information on Autism causing
issues, and challenging federal government to provide more services. We will continue to hear and see more of what
National is working on in the future.
An announcement was made by Dr. Jim Ball, Executive Chairman for the Autism Society, that in the Fall there
will be a Summit with ALL Autism Groups to create One Voice for Autism. The keynote presentation was Dr. Ann Turnbull,
distinguished professor of special education and director, University of Kansas. Dr. Turnbull shared the inspiring story
of how her family created a community of support for her adult son, Jay. She described a group solution-finding process
that she and her family used which involved forming reliable alliances to generate energy and joy in creating supports for
inclusive living. “My son’s best social security was not from the government, it was people. Friends. People in community,”
she said.
The following was shared with us at National: Join the Autism Society’s Songs 4 Autism Campaign
Music is a powerful thing. It touches hearts and conveys emotion like no other medium. The song “So it Goes”
does that for autism, and we want to make it a Gold Record!
A Gold Record would touch 500,000 people to inspire compassion and support for families living with autism.
Let’s show how we can mobilize! Let’s show that nothing can stop us when it comes to standing up for our
children!
Help change our world and support more families through music by sharing “So it Goes” with everyone you
know. This is a grassroots campaign, so there’s no big record company pushing plays on radio stations; we
need to push plays in living rooms.
The Macomb/St. Clair County Chapter has created a Team and we ask that you go to the following link to join
in sharing this music to inspire support, and Songs 4 autism puts the funds where they make the most
difference, in our community. To learn more about this campaign and to hear this wonderful song, go to
www.songs4autism.org
There will be many handouts from the Conference at the September Meeting. Thank you!
RIDE FOR AUTISM
by Maribeth Yahner
The 8th annual Ride for autism was held on Aug 4th at
Biker Bobs in Taylor, and what a fabulous event! Sal
Ferra, Pete Joseph and Larry Stock are great guys and
put a lot of work and time into this event for our kids.
The band “Remedy” was awesome again this year, offering
great background music to the party! Rachel Adams, the “Detroit
ambassador” for the Ride autographed pictures and presented special
2012 “This ride is for you” medals to our kids who attended. We had a
lot of items that were raffled off, and we thank all of the donors for their
generosity. There was approximately 140 riders coming from two starting
points again this year, Pinckney & Southfield. The costumed characters
from “Star Wars” were a great touch for the kids, especially the
“dancing Chew Baca”! Overall it was a great day and a great event.
Our thanks to all the riders and everybody that helped out. Keep the
ride on your calendars for next year, first Saturday in August!
A big ‘Thank You’ to each and everyone of our supporters
who donated your time and/or money to make the
THE SNAKE EXPO - Autism Awareness Event
by Maribeth Yahner
The “snake expo” fundraiser/awareness event was held
in Richmond at Brengman’s Inn Land, on July 29th and
was a lot of fun for those who attended. Dawn Piacsik
from The Education Station, put a lot of time and effort
into this event for our kids.
They raffled off 3 snakes and
the winners were very happy.
They had some videos playing
with information about
snakes and where you would
find them in nature. The kids
really enjoyed watching the
video while they had the opportunity
to hold the snakes
around their necks! Dawn and
all the vendors took a lot of time with attendees to educate
them and answer any of their questions they had about the
snakes. Everybody there was so nice and treated our kids
to a wonderful afternoon. It sounds scary to have a snake
around your neck, but the fears melted away, as Dawn and
her staff informed the audience about snakes. Our thanks
to Dawn, the vendors, Brengman’s Inn, and all the others
who were involved in this for donating a portion of the
proceeds to our Chapter.
Want a great idea on how to raise money
for our Chapter? Here is what Lori Roberts
did. Her company, OUR Credit Union had
a jeans day and to wear jeans you had to
donate money and that money was given
to our Chapter! Thanks again Lori and the
OUR Credit Union for thinking of us.
