Friends
in Christ,
This year we are celebrating 25 years of Saint
Paul’s Outreach. It also happens to be the 35th
anniversary of the reawakening of my own faith as
a freshman in college. At the time, I was not living
a very moral life, despite growing up in a Catholic
home. I had more or less stopped practicing my
faith. I cannot begin to express the debt of grati-
tude that I owe to the Catholic youth workers who
reached out to me that year and drew me back to
Christ and His Church.
They were so alive in their faith that they couldn’t
help but share it with others, and this is what SPO
has been all about for the last 25 years.
The mandate of spreading the Gospel is faced
with severe challenges in today’s post-Christian
society, and nowhere more so than on college
campuses, which have become battlegrounds for
the minds and souls of our young people. Thank-
fully, there is hope and great opportunity! Stu-
dents are hungry for truth, and SPO is expanding
to meet this need for the Gospel on college cam-
puses across the United States.
Our history is filled with stories of thousands
of lives transformed by the Holy Spirit working
through SPO missionaries. Thanks to the unique
quality and depth of Catholic formation that we
offer, our alumni are passionate followers of Christ
who continue to shine His light in the world long
after they have graduated. They are renewing the
Church and evangelizing the culture.
We are deeply grateful to all of you who have
made this possible over the last 25 years.

1 student with a vision at Texas State Univer-
sity. This fall we sent 3 full-time missionaries
to partner with the St. Jude Catholic Student
Center in reaching students for Christ and His
Church. They are leading 3 Households and a
small group program with 50 students.

to Bowling Green State University. SPO-Ohio
continues to flourish with 23 missionaries bring-
ing Catholic faith to life on campus and over 400
students participating in our activities so far this

4 of the Fan into Flame retreats that SPO con-
ducted last year were for seminaries, including
one overseas: the Pontifical College Josephinum
(OH), the Saint John Vianney Seminary (MN), the
Archdiocese of Kansas City (KS), and the Pontifi-
cal North American College (Rome).

Catholic faith alive on
campus
On August 7, 2011, almost 600 alumni
and friends of SPO gathered in St. Paul,
Minnesota, to share an afternoon reminiscing and
celebrating all that God has done through SPO
in 25 years since its founding in 1986 by Gordy
DeMarais, Christina Smith and Fr. Kevin Finnegan
(pictured below).
The impact of the ministry shone through power-
fully – and not just the campus impact. There is a
remarkable “ripple effect” of SPO alumni who have
become leaders in the Catholic community and in
the marketplace. They are renewing the Church
and transforming the culture for Christ. This is all
thanks to the most unique gift that SPO offers:
deep and mature Catholic formation that builds a
strong foundation of faith and virtue to last a life-
time.

The result is thousands of alumni who are truly
passionate about living the Catholic faith and shar-
ing it with others. In the Archdiocese of St. Paul
& Minneapolis alone, notable clergy alumni in-
clude the current and former rectors of Saint John
Vianney Seminary, which is the largest college
seminary in the country, 3 professors and instruc-
tors at The Saint Paul Seminary, and the director of
diaconate formation.
• 96% of alumni surveyed still pray daily.
• 75% of them volunteer at their local parish.
• Over 150 alumni are priests, religious, semi-
narians, novices, and deacons.

I don’t know where I would be without SPO. Let
me tell you my “prodigal son” story...
I was born and raised in a little city right outside
Cleveland, Ohio. God blessed me with a beauti-
ful Catholic family. As the youngest of seven, I
always had older siblings around, guiding me to
be a good person. We were taught to work hard,
respect others, and believe in ourselves.
12 years of Catholic education served me well.
Grade school gave me a solid foundation and
my faith started to come to life in high school.
Most of my friends were raised the same way as
me, so living out my faith wasn’t too hard.
After graduating high school, I went to a small
school near Philadelphia. I continued to attend
Mass and even attempted to start a Newman
Center. But I began to give in to the temptations
of drinking and lustful behavior. Pretty soon, my
social life revolved around partying. It seemed
like that was just what everyone did in college,
so I didn’t see the problem.
Sophomore year I transferred to Ohio State. I re-
ally wanted to meet people and fit in, so I joined
a social fraternity because I was attracted by the
glamor it promised. I could have tons of friends
and really get the full college experience. I tried
to hold to some of the morals my family taught
me but it was hard to resist the pull of the crowd
when everyone was involved in the party life, in
drinking, lust, and drugs. It consumed me.
Junior year I moved in with some guys from the

two things. First, it surrounded me with bad in-
fluences that led to falling into addictions that
controlled my life and negatively affected my
grades and relationships. Second, it made me
finally realize I had turned away from the life God
had blessed me with. I saw that I had lost my
way and that my life would continue to spiral
downward unless something changed.
I started to take some steps back towards God.
He sent me a friend, Darius Perkins, to invite me
into the Saint Paul’s Outreach community. I was
in a very dark place and SPO gave me a beacon
of light. It reminded me of the values my family
had instilled in me. More importantly, though,
SPO brought me into a relationship with Jesus
Christ, and a deep acceptance of and gratitude
for the sacrifice on the cross that He made for
my salvation.
This year, I am living in an SPO Men’s House-
hold and I love it! SPO Households aren’t re-
motely like the houses most college students
live in. Instead, they’re intense communities of
frat. Living in such close quarters with them did

tion. We get to share a rich common life: prayer
in the mornings, meals in the evenings, chores
on weekends, plenty of service and evangelistic
outreach, and a whole lot of fun!
My brothers in the house are a huge support.
They pull me up. They help me grow in the faith
and practice it in daily life, hopefully forming
habits that will stand the test of time. Through
SPO, I’ve been able to make Jesus Christ the top
priority in my life, and experience the happiness
and peace that He brings.
Someone reached out to me with the love of
God, and now I have the privilege of being able
to do the same. This year, I’m doing that by
leading an SPO Bible study, and building com-
munity among students on campus.
I’m finding that it makes an enormous difference
to be immersed in a strong Catholic culture like
SPO. There’s no way I would have the strength
to do this on my own. As I know all too well, the
temptations of the campus environment are just
too much. Thank you, God, for SPO!
