Tyre pressure is extremely important for the safe running of your car,
yet is one of the most overlooked points of car maintenance.
Over inflated tyres are as bad as under inflated, leading to uneven wear
and increased risk of a blowout.
Your vehicle manual will advise of you the recommended pressure for
normal road use, and in many cars this information can also can be found
on a label in the driver door archway.
Failure to maintain the necessary standard of tyre pressure could
result in a Fixed Penalty Notice, but more importantly, you could be
putting yours and others lives at risk.
Travel Feature -
Bird’s Eye View of London...
By Mags Addison
The views of the River Thames and it’s many bridges, were spread below us.
And it was one of those occasions when you couldn’t stop taking photos and
spying famous landmarks during the 360 deg panoramic journey. They say
it’s the view you’ll never forget.
So where was I? Actually, in a capsule on the Coca Cola London Eye, one of
the few places in the capital where you can enjoy such a view. London is an
amazing city for a short break any time of the year, with so much to do and
see. So why not grab a bird’s eye view of the city while there.
I travel to London regularly, mainly through business and training events, but
rarely have time to indulge in something like this huge observation wheel
which is an icon of modern London. You almost take it for granted on the river side, and the glimpses you
have when coming into Waterloo on the train. It’s not till you actually stand under it, that you realise how
big it is. Apparently the circumference would take 2,120 Cola Bottles laid around it!
It’s just five minutes’ walk from Waterloo station – so ideally placed for people from the south. Straight
off the train, and you’re practically there. Be warned though, the queues are horrendously long at peak
times, so booking your time slot in advance before you arrive in London is essential. But in early February
– although there were plenty of people milling about and queuing, getting on board was fairly straight
forward. The really lengthy queues were inside – in the ticket section of the County Hall.
With Easter and other holidays, and half terms coming up at this time of year, it’s popular not just with
families and foreign tourists, but everyone. And for special occasions. There are many options with the
London Eye ticket, so purchase the one that is right for you: Standard. Fast Track. Champagne Experience.
Friends and Family Private Capsules, etc.
One thing I found is that when booking online – or on site, is it pays to consider what else you plan to
do while in the City. And plan ahead. Because upgrading your ticket to include other attractions saves
money. And it makes sense to book everything together as one combined ticket, rather than paying for
each attraction individually. These saver tickets cover: Madam Tussauds. The London Dungeon. Shrek’s
Adventure. Sea Life Aquarium.
It is worth the money – and as I looked down on the Thames
on this pale wintery, sunny morning all the famous landmarks
were displayed below me. Whichever direction you looked,
everything was familiar. Big Ben, and the Houses of
Parliament. Buckingham Palace – skirted by Green Park.
The Post Office Tower, and below us on the embankment, the
famous Savoy Hotel. This side of the river, the South Bank and
the Festival Hall – and St Paul’s in the distance. And souring
above all, one of the newer additions to London’s landmarks,
The Shard – who’s observation deck on the 72nd floor, has
been the highest viewing point in London since 2013.
Beach holidays, City breaks, Honeymoons, Weddings abroad, Adventure holidays, Ski,
Cruise, Tailormade trips, Flight only, Car hire, Airport hotels and parking and much more...
Independent Estate Agents & Valuers
ASK THE AGENT...
Q: How do I go about choosing an agent to sell my home?
Choosing who to entrust with selling what is almost certainly our single most valuable
asset ought to be one of the most considered decisions any of us ever take. Yet bizarrely,
many people choose their estate agent with a good deal less serious thought than if they
were deciding where to buy their groceries. Indeed, two of the commonest reasons for
choosing one agent over another are that:
1: They valued your home the highest, or 2: Yhey were the cheapest.
Hardly scientific, is it? No wonder so many people don’t have a good word to say about
estate agents!
There is no one “correct” way to choose an agent. There are those who insist that your
best bet is to choose a small, local independent firm. And there is some merit in this
argument. After all, everything else being equal, you might reasonably expect a small
local firm to really know the area in question, and perhaps also be able to offer a more
personal service than their larger competitors. But that is not always the case. The plain
fact is that there are both good and bad local independent agents - and by the same
token, there are good and bad among the larger, so- called “corporate” agents too.
Similarly, it is often argued that you should always choose an agent who belongs to one
of the recognised professional bodies, such as the National Association of Estate Agents,
which operates a strict code of conduct and generally exists to champion the highest
professional standards. However, human nature being what it is, having the letters
“MNAEA” or “FNAEA” after an agent’s name is no absolute guarantee of quality,
any more than the absence of those letters automatically means that an agent is no good
at his job.
Personal recommendation is often cited as the best way to choose an agent.
Nevertheless ... the fact is, we’re all different, and what works well for one person may
not work so well for another.
Of course, in an ideal world I would say that choosing an estate agent should involve all
of the above. Ultimately however, it really comes down to trust and rapport.
Basically, if you have a good feeling about the trustworthiness and professionalism of an
agent, then go with it!
“You don’t even know what the carburettor is.” “I’m telling you,” repeated
“Salary Theorem” states that “Engineers and Scientists can never
earn as much as Business Executives and Sales People.”
This theorem can now be supported by a mathematical equation
based on the following two postulates:
1. Knowledge is Power. 2. Time is Money.
As every engineer knows: Power = Work / Time
Since: Knowledge = Power and Time = Money
It follows that: Knowledge = Work/Money.
Therefore for Money, we get: Money = Work / Knowledge.
Thus, as Knowledge approaches zero, Money approaches infinity,
regardless of the amount of work done.
Conclusion: The less you know, the more you make.
Is Windows a Virus ?
No, Windows is not a virus. Here’s what viruses do:
1.They replicate quickly - okay, Windows does that.
2.Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system
as they do so - true, Windows does that.
3.Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk -
hmm, Windows does that too.
4.Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with
valuable programs and systems. - Yes.. Windows does that as well.
5.Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too
slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware. -
Again, Windows does that, too.
Until now then it seems Windows is a virus but there are
fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors,
are running effectively on most systems, their program code is fast,
compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as
they mature. So Windows is not a virus. It’s a bug!
There is no beating the taste of truly fresh
fruit and veg especially, when it’s yours!
Gardening Tips for March
Preparation is the watchword for March. There are a number of things to get ready and sow in the
vegetable patch.
You should prepare the ground for sowing outdoors. You might want to cover it with back fabric to
warm it up, if you have cloches you can use them too if you feel the weather is still too cold. About a
week prior to sowing, give the site a liberal sprinkling of a general fertiliser such as Growmore.
If you have one, now is the time to clean up your seed bed. Break up any large clods, de-stone and
remove any weed growth, then rake over.
Climbing Bean trenches should be dug and backfilled with organic matter and newspaper to aid moisture
retention in the growing season.
If you are planning to grow Asparagus for the first time, do it now and follow the suppliers planting
advice to ensure success. Here at North Bournemouth Allotments my wife and I planted 1 year old
Asparagus 2 years ago and are now looking forward to our first crop. So you have to be patient.
Sowing Outdoors: Carrots, Parsnips, Cauliflowers, Salad crops, Beetroot, Summer Cabbage, Leeks &
Spinach.
Sowing Indoors: Celery, Celeriac, Tomatoes.
Planting Outdoors: First Early Potatoes. Garlic, Onion Sets & Bare rooted
Fruit Trees. Summer flowering bulbs such as Gladioli and Dahlia Tubers.
Gooseberries must be pruned by this month. Cut main stems by 1/3, low and
crossing branches, opening up the centre of the plant for light and access to
the fruit later on.
Do not forget the slugs, snails and Hedgehogs are more active now, so treat
any plants at risk with care.
Gardening Tips for April
Now it is April, Easter is upon us and everyone is expecting the warmer weather to arrive. Be warned,
one warm day is not the start of summer and frost is not unknown at this time of year.
Last month we concentrated upon the vegetable plot. Now it is the time to focus on our flower garden.
How to maximise all those glorious colours and bring them into the house where possible.
Whether it is foliage or flowers, there are hundreds of flowers you can set from seed in April.
It is probably best to sow your seeds indoors in modules or trays as per the seed supplier’s instructions.
Whilst these are germinating you should prepare the ground you intend to plant them.
Consider the colour and height combinations for your borders. I have found a great wall chart you can
study in your planting preparations. Which plants are Perennial, Annual, Biennial, Hardy, Half Hardy.
Flowers that are great for arrangements, cutting fresh and others that are just right for drying.
hub.suttons.co.uk/featured/cut-flower-wall-chart-and-growing-guide
If you are planning a new bed it is best to take a bit of time and
effort in the preparation. You would be disappointed later on to
have a weed infested border, so dig them out by hand now. At this
point cover the ground with some black plastic. In doing this any
remaining weeds will seek out the light and after a short time you
can peel back the plastic to uncover the white roots. You should
clear them thoroughly. Flowers do not require much fertilizer but a
dressing of Blood, Fish & Bone together with a little Growmore will
get your new plants going.
BROKEN STREET LIGHTING
FLYYTIPPING LOOSE PAVING?
REPORT THEM TO THE COUNCIL WITH
.com by
Bumpy ride this morning? View blocked by dumped rubbish?
Potholes and fly tipping are just two of the street faults that can be reported via
the website www.FixMyStreet.com along with vandalism, graffiti, dog fouling
and many other common community issues.
While most of us know that the council are responsible for fixing these things,
we may not know which council, let along which department in which council.
With FixMyStreet, all you have to do is locate the problem on a map, and select
a category: the site then sends it off to the right place to get it fixed.
All reports are published on the site, as well as being sent to the council.
Browsing your own postcode can be interesting, as you soon learn what the
persistent problems are in your area, and whether or not they are being fixed.
There’s also the opportunity to discuss individual reports in the comments
section.
FixMyStreet comes from the UK not-for-profit organisation mySociety, and
is one of its longest-running and most-used services. It is just one of several
projects aimed at making it easier for citizens to get things changed in their
own community. So, next time you see something that needs fixing, be it a
broken paving slab or a flickering streetlight, all you need to remember is
Project Indigo
One boy’s adventure through time and space!
Hi, I’m Tom, a local Doctor Who blogger & I write about my adventures online at
anadventurethroughtimeandspace.com
Project Indigo is my special blog where I travel the world (mainly the UK!) visiting places
associated with Doctor Who.
This month we are visiting Dyrham Park in
Gloucestershire, filming location for The Night Terrors
which was an Eleventh Doctor episode in 2011. In this
episode the Doctor, Amy and Rory visit a little boy in
London who is so scared of his wardrobe that his fear
is transmitted throughout the universe. This mission to
help the child leads them to become trapped in a Dolls
House where they must fight peg-dolls that would scare
anyone silly!
Dyrham Park is a National Trust property near Bath.
This country house was built in the late 17th Century for a politician named William
Blathwayt who received the land through marriage to Mary Wynter. He is very well known
in America as he was a key figure in the administration of the American Colonies and he
also served as Secretary of War under James II and William III.
This house was chosen as the filming location as it looks like it would make a perfect Dolls
House. I visited at Christmas time when the weather was grey but dry. First I explored
the grounds which are famous for being home to a herd of fallow deer. The name Dyrham
comes the Anglo-Saxon word ‘dirham’ which means ‘enclosure for deer’. The deer park
covers 270 acres!
The gardens are in the middle of a project to recreate the look of the 17th Century. I found
a gate which took me to the Lost Terraces which are still undergoing work to restore them.
I walked in the footsteps of William Blathwayt which have just been uncovered and looked
down upon St Peter’s Church where he got married. It felt very tranquil in the terraces.
Afterwards I went into the house which was very
imposing. I recognised the wooden panelled walls
but in the episode all the furniture had been
removed for filming and replaced by dolls-house
furniture, including a wooden frying pan. I could
see lots of worldwide treasures from a time of
exploration including Dutch items such as blue and
white Delftware Pottery and a still-life by Cornelis
De Heem. There was also a famous Trompe L’oeil
by Samuel Van Hoogstraten, a picture which
messes with your mind. On the way out I was
offered some hot chocolate made using a 17th
Century recipe. It was very, very spicy!
Thank you for reading and if you would like to read about other Doctor Who locations I
have visited please check out my blog. Goodbye!
“Comfortable Feet”
41
It’s important that our feet are comfortable whether
we are working or going for a leisurely walk. Insoles
are an excellent way to achieve comfortable feet.
Insoles are beneficial for a few simple reasons:
1. They provide cushioning and support
2. They are an efficient way of relieving foot pain
3. Improved performance during athletic activities
Here is a quick guide explaining these points in more detail.
Our insoles are individually molded to your feet so they provide the support and cushioning
needs for your feet. With this support, your feet will fatigue less easily, meaning you can enjoy
your activities throughout the day.
There are three primary foot types which affects our bodies way of absorbing impact:
overpronation, excessive supination and neutral. Overpronation occurs when the foot rolls
inwardly excessively and excessive supination is the opposite when the foot rolls to the outside.
Neutral is when weight is distributed evenly across the foot. Whatever your foot type though,
our insoles can properly support your arches into the neutral position in order to maintain a
balanced state and a healthy foot function.
Another common problem which insoles can help is plantar
fasciitis. Common symptoms of this condition is pain in the heel
and is most often felt during the first few steps of the day and
after rest. Our insoles can help reduce the strain on the plantar
fascia muscle, allowing the muscle to time it needs to heal.
Bunions can also be helped with insoles by repositioning the
foot to reduce pressure on the bunion area. This is achieved by
supporting the transverse arch which runs across the middle
of the foot from the outside to the inside. This arch provides
flexibility and support for the foot.
Finally, your sporting activities can be improved by using insoles. Sports injuries can occur
due to the repetitive and sudden movements in the feet. The most common injuries occur in
the ligaments and are related to the overuse and structural misalignment of the foot.
This can be prevented by ensuring your feet are kept in the neutral position while still
delivering dynamic flex for the arches. This support also improves energy transfer and reduces
wasted motion.
An elderly couple had been experiencing declining memories, so they
decided to take a power memory class where one is taught to remember
things by association. A few days after the class, the old man was outside
“Oh, ummmm, let’s see,” the old man pondered. “You know that flower, you
know, the one that smells really nice but has those prickly thorns, what’s
that flower’s name?” “A rose?” asked the neighbour. “Yes, that’s it,” replied
the old man. He then turned toward his house and shouted, “Hey, Rose,
what’s the name of the Instructor we took the memory class from?”
