many, many well-deserved best days of our lives.

Dear Members of our Community, 

One of the main jobs of any governing board is to set the organization’s future goals. Our governance structure also requires the 

CEO to show progress towards those specific Board-established Results (goals) at certain times during the year, on which the 

Board then takes action. This framework accomplishes a couple of objectives: it gives the CEO feedback throughout the year on 

his performance and it keeps movement towards the Results in front of the Board on a regular basis. 

I believe our emphasis on Results by the Board is breaking new ground, because in a traditional Board, the Board is often 

relegated to “advising” the CEO, making sure the CEO does his job or just being the CEO’s rubber stamp: all operationally focused 

and not future-oriented. 

What we are now starting to see is the Board giving the CEO the Results target, setting the operational parameters that the Board 

expects and letting the CEO do his job – but holding him accountable for his performance. This creates much richer discussion 

at Board meetings when we’re debating concepts like how to include the shin issei as part of our community, how do we define 

kimochi and what does it look like in a skilled nursing context; as opposed to talking about why $5,000 was spent on an outside 

consultant or how much should we charge for a book. 

I want to thank the Board for their patience and support as we worked through this governance model these last few years; and 

as I leave my term as President, I feel hopeful that the stage is set for the Nikkei Concerns organization to achieve great things.

I think of kazoku (family)…I am blessed to be a part of a large and wonderful family…the one we call Nikkei Concerns. 

The residents and participants are my collective oya (parents), the staff and volunteers are my kyodai (brothers and sisters), 

and the community are my shinseki (relatives). 

I think of kizuna (bond)…we are all connected through our common commitment to be of service to our elders and 

community through honoring and respecting our culture and values. This connection runs deep. 

I think of kanshya (thankful)…to the thousands of individuals and organizations who have invested their precious time, 

funds and compassion. The “return on investment” is only to ensure that we work diligently to “make each day, the best 

day” for our residents and participants. 

2011 has proven to be a year of truly bringing the “family” together and strengthening the foundation of Nikkei Concerns. 

We are implementing the Nikkei Concerns Way initiative where our founding values will pervade the entire organization. We 

have listened to our “family” to hone our “Results” goals and plans. New or enhanced programs/services have been rolling 

out including the “Dragonfly Project,” Nikkei Horizons classes at White River Buddhist Temple, and the beautiful Keiro Garden 

that will be completed shortly. There is more to come, and I am excited about our future! 

I would like to take this moment to extend my appreciation to David Hayasaka, Board President, the Board of Directors for 

their leadership, and to my kazoku, with whom I have the privilege of working and sharing on a daily basis.

Putting the Nikkei Concerns Way to Work 

With the Nikkei Concerns Way as our guiding philosophy, we produce Results based 

on the cornerstones of family, respect, trust, kimochi (compassion), and quality 

of life. Our mission is to enrich and support the lives of elders and meet their needs in a way 

that honors and respects Nikkei culture and values. This means that we will do all we can to 

achieve these Results: 

w Our elderly will sustain their independence as much as possible. 

w Our elderly will maintain the highest possible quality of life, including physical 

and mental health and wellness. They will have peace of mind, feeling safe and nurtured. 

w The lives of our elders are enriched and supported in a way that honors and 

respects Nikkei culture and values. Our elderly will lead socially and culturally 

enriched lives. 

These results empower us to put the happiness and well-being of our elders first and overcome 

all perceived limitations. We will do more, developing new services to share with the 

community; bringing Nikkei Concerns to you at home. It is up to us – employees, volunteers, 

and community – to make every day the best day for the residents and participants who are 

key members of our family. 

Today, the residents’ and participants’ independence and quality of life are our focus. 

Wai Eng loves Nikkei Manor because he 

can enjoy his golden years doing the things 

that are important to him (and avoiding the 

no-fun things like laundry and cooking). Living 

in the heart of the International District allows 

him to walk to his family association and the 

restaurant he used to own. He enjoys the 

freedom he has living at Nikkei Manor. 

Brenda Han was devastated when an infection in her spine 

caused paralysis to her trunk and leg muscles. After a surgery, 

she could barely move her toe and feared that she could 

never walk again. But our Infinity Rehab team took that as a 

challenge. In less than three months, not only was she walking, 

she was able to go home. It wasn’t easy. Brenda and the 

physical therapists, championed by Nancy Miyazaki, worked 

together to teach Brenda’s legs how to walk again. As she 

improved, gaining strength every day, staff members and 

volunteers alike cheered her on. She walked out of Seattle 

Keiro a strong and happy woman. 

Leo Kawasaki and Peggy Saito were high school 

classmates but hadn’t seen each other in years. When 

they joined Kokoro Kai, it was a high school reunion! 

Peggy was Leo’s idol, and he is excited to share his 

memories with her and how their lives have turned out 

since those days. Their friendship is a strong social 

connection that enhances their Kokoro Kai experience.

Groundbreaking 

Months of dreaming, planning, 

fundraising, and navigating a host of 

details has transformed the Seattle 

Keiro Garden Project from 

vision to reality. The weather mirrored 

the crowd’s enthusiasm as sunshine 

broke through the clouds for close 

to 100 guests who celebrated the 

groundbreaking for the Seattle Keiro 

Garden. September 19, Keiro no hi, 

Japan’s Respect for Elders Day, was 

an auspicious day. 

Reflecting the rich and diverse 

spirituality of the Seattle Keiro 

residents, the Garden received 

Shinto, Buddhist, and Christian 

blessings. Seattle City Councilmember 

Bruce Harrell, Seattle Deputy Mayor 

Darryl Smith, Chief of Staff of the 

King County Executive’s Office 

Sung Yang, and NW Regional 

Representative Julien Loh of the Office 

of the Governor, as well as Consul 

General Kiyokazu Ota expressed their 

support of Nikkei Concerns and the 

Garden Project. Neill Urano, Nikkei 

Concerns Board Member and Seattle 

Keiro Garden Project Co-Chair, and 

Elsie Taniguchi, Nikkei Concerns 

Community Advisory Council Member

The groundbreaking team, comprised of spiritual, political, and professional community 

representatives, as well as Nikkei Concerns donors and leaders, joined the Seattle Keiro 

Garden Project Team to record this memorable event.

Garden Progress 

Contractors quickly demolished 

the unneeded features, graded the 

terrain, and poured concrete for the 

water feature. While the concrete 

cured, welders worked on the 

building. Landscapers brought in 

over 10 tons of mammoth rocks, and 

Scott Murase supervised the precise 

placement of each one. 

At press time, the Garden Project 

continues to make progress, however, 

it appears there will be a delay in 

the completion of the overall project. 

The building interior and exterior 

enhancements are expected to be 

completed in December 2011 with 

the garden to follow in the Spring of 

2012. A reveal event is in

Oba Project champions Elaine Wetterauer 

and Pat Norikane Logerwell present

Project. The Oba Project, where “high 

fashion meets high purpose,” is a group 

of skillful and enterprising women who 

create stylish, hand-crafted handbags. 

They annually donate the proceeds from 

the sale of the bags to one organization 

of the group’s choosing. Nikkei Concerns 

and the Seattle Keiro Garden Project are 

honored to be the first recipient of their 

generosity, but we are doubly touched 

and humbled that the Oba Project will 

also dedicate a second year’s proceeds 

to the Garden Project. Thank you, ladies, 

and may your beautiful bags adorn 

fashionistas all over the world!

Seattle Keiro Garden Donors 

More than a Garden… a Retreat for All Seasons! 

The Seattle Keiro Garden Project 

offers more than a stunning 

water feature and peaceful 

natural surroundings. Because of 

unpredictable weather (and the alltoo-predictable 

gray Seattle winters), 

the Garden Project has included an 

integrated indoor component in the 

plans. Improvements to the building 

and the interior space multiplies the 

possibilities with year-round access to 

the garden. 

An overhanging canopy protects 

individuals from the elements when 

the bank of folding glass doors 

is open. When closed, the doors 

provide weather-proof, year-round 

garden viewing. The interior will 

extend the garden atmosphere with 

soothing colors and natural elements. 

For the Residents 

Residents can enjoy the change of 

seasons indoors, protected from 

the elements. They can extend their 

outdoor garden experience with time 

spent inside, in full view of the beauty 

before them. They will feel a part of 

the world around them, no longer

therapy, indoor rehab in natural 

surroundings is almost as good as 

outside, plus it’s a lot warmer. With 

the additional indoor square footage, 

therapy patients can stretch out and 

concentrate on getting better. 

For the Community 

The public will find the indoor space 

a perfect launching site for parties 

and other celebrations. With the 

folding doors thrown open, the 

garden is a natural backdrop. An 

afternoon garden event can move 

inside as the sun sets, and the 

merriment can continue. 

The Seattle Keiro Garden Project is 

a treasure for everyone – residents, 

families, and the community. The 

indoor renovation makes the Garden 

Project a universal retreat that will 

bring together the generations, build 

kizuna, and improve the quality of 

life of all who share in its beauty. The 

Seattle Keiro Garden Project is the 

beginning, the catalyst, for our vision 

of the future.

A Tale of Two Sisters 

Two sisters, Shizuno and Kiyono, 

grew up together in Hawaii but had 

been separated for many years by 

space and time. Big sister Shizuno 

lived in Hawaii. Kiyono’s husband 

was in the military, stationed around 

the world, including Arizona and 

Germany. Although the sisters 

remained in close contact throughout 

the years and eventually moved to 

the Puget Sound Region (one lives 

in Tacoma and the other in Auburn), 

they didn’t see each other often. That 

all changed when they both joined 

Kokoro Kai. 

The sisters are now in their 

late eighties. They both began 

participating in Kokoro Kai this year. 

“Who knew that two sisters from 

Hawaii would get together at Kokoro 

Kai, in Seattle?” said both ladies, 

adding, “We didn’t get to see each 

other even though we live not too far 

apart.” They reminisce about the old 

days and where their lives have taken 

them throughout the years. In spite of 

their age, the bond between older 

and younger sister is evident. Shizuno 

always took care of the younger ones 

in the family, and it’s still the same! 

At lunchtime, she watches over her 


younger sister, making sure that she 

is eating well and enjoying her meal. 

During the activities, Kiyono keeps 

a watchful eye on her older sister 

making sure she is in sight. “Sisters 

are your best friends – forever!” 

exclaims Shizuno. 

Kokoro Kai offers an opportunity for 

the elderly to make new friends and 

social contacts. This is extremely 

important because as people progress 

into their eighties and nineties, they 

may experience a sense of isolation 

and loneliness. But in Kokoro Kai, 

participants form new bonds with 

other participants, volunteers, and 

staff. For some, Kokoro Kai offers 

people a chance to share their 

perspectives with those who have 

been down the same life road. Others 

have reunited with those they knew in 

their youth but had not seen or spoken 

to for many years. 

Shizuno’s and Kiyono’s sisterhood 

thrives in Kokoro Kai’s caring 

environment. 

“I love Kokoro Kai because everyone 

is so warm, caring and kind.”

Seattle Keiro resident Ok Park thanked Guest Chef Joana Chong of 

rice’n’roll and Beard Papa’s for making a delicious Korean meal for the 

Seattle Keiro residents and community guests. The bi bim bop that Chef 

Chong cooked originated from the same area where Mrs. Park grew 

up and brought back many fond memories of home. The Guest Chef 

Program brings new culinary experiences to the Seattle Keiro residents, 

inviting talented and innovative chefs from around the Seattle area. 

Sharonne and Cho Shimizu, Sachiyo Enomoto, and Maiko Watanabe learned 

how to use the new Link Light Rail on a Nikkei Horizons tour this Spring. Not 

only was this tour fun (and in demand), the participants have expanded their 

travel options with the knowledge that they gained. The Discover a Town 

with Metro tours (highlighting the Metro bus system) free participants from 

reliance on driving or obtaining rides from others. Nikkei Horizons promotes the 

spirit of independence and the joy of lifelong learning. 

For the future, we are developing programs that touch you at your home as well as at ours! 

Louise Kashino Takisaki, Sunkie Oye, Kiyo Toda, and Lucy Sato dig in at 

the first Midori Condos Family Dinner. We invited the residents of 

the Midori Condos to dinner to reach beyond our borders and serve the 

community at home. The brainchild of Nikkei Concerns chefs, Michael 

Friedman and Ron Youmans, and former Transportation Services Manager, 

Michael Muelling, the program offers community members not only a 

delicious restaurant-quality meal but an opportunity to renew social ties 

and stay connected to neighbors. 

Mary Furuta checked her blood pressure at Nikkei Concerns’ first Open 

House & Wellness Fair. Health and fun can go hand in hand. Attendees 

learned about Nikkei Concerns programs, nutrition, blood pressure, diabetes, 

and the Seattle Keiro Garden from Nikkei Concerns staff, organizations, and 

vendors. Residents from both Nikkei Manor and Seattle Keiro joined in the fun 

and many participated in the Nikkei Horizons’ EnhanceFitness exercise, Zumba, 

and Hula demonstrations. Friendly and helpful Nintendo volunteers assisted 

guests with their balance on the Wii. 

Dedicated and understanding members of the Dragonfly Project are 

forming a support group for Seattle Keiro family members whose loved ones are 

facing the end life. They will lend a sympathetic ear and offer practical advice 

(from those who have been there) to help family members. The group is currently 

working out details and hopes to be available beginning next January. The 

Dragonfly Project is an ongoing effort at Seattle Keiro to help families as their 

loved one reaches the end of life. It aims to provide dignity for residents and 

comfort for family members, as well as information to guide them through this 

difficult time.

Preparing Your Home to Sell

How much time does it take 

to sell my home? 

In this current market, a home may 

take about 3-6 months to sell and close, if 

the home is priced properly. Condition and how well it 

“shows” also matter. In addition to the market time, home 

sellers should also think about the time needed to prepare 

the home. Market time may not be in your control, but 

preparation time is. 

Why should I prepare my home for sale when 

I am not ready to move? 

Preparation takes time and when a life changing event 

happens, the one thing we have the least is time. The 

more you can do before that time happens, the better off 

you will be when you move/sell.

Alzheimer’s Walk 

Elsie Wang (fearless leader of our Infinity Rehab 

team), James Hollingsworth, Amy Hirasawa, 

Seattle Keiro resident Fusako Nagamatsu, 

and therapy inspiration dog, Muffin, joined 

the Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Seattle 

Center on September 10. The Nikkei Concerns 

team was 48 people (and one dog) strong, 

with both Seattle Keiro and Nikkei Manor residents and their loved 

ones, volunteers, and staff. The team raised a total of $1,196 for the 

Alzheimer’s Association and had a great time in the beautiful weather. 

Aki Matsuri 

Nikkei Concerns descended upon Bellevue for Eastside Nihon Matsuri 

Association’s 14th Annual Aki Matsuri, September 10-11. Nikkei 

Manor residents leisurely took in the sights and performances, including 

our latest dance revolution, Stewart Perry, hula-ing his heart out to the 

ukulele strains of Nikkei Horizons’ Aki Matsuri Band. Those inspired 

by Stewart learned more at the Nikkei Horizons exhibition booth. We 

shared the joy of Kokoro Kai and the incredible possibilities of the 

Seattle Keiro Garden with the attendees, offering handmade souvenir 

necklaces created by the Seattle Keiro residents. 

What do I do first to get my home ready 

for sale? 

Most homes, especially when someone has lived there 

for many years, are full of a lifetime of possessions, and 

owners need to clean out the home. Homes typically are 

more marketable if the home is staged and free of clutter. I 

usually recommend removing 50% or more of the items to 

adequately show buyers the spaces in the home. 

I have too many things, it’s too hard to move. 

Start in a small area or go room to room. It can be 

daunting to have to think about cleaning out an entire 

home. Separate items into 3 groups – garbage, donate 

or giveaway, and keep items. Remember it takes time and 

patience. The sooner you start, the better off you will be 

when the time comes to sell and move.

adventure, expanding our world or discovering the world within. We honor long-held traditions 

and treasure kind gestures of friendship and love. Senior moments at Nikkei Concerns are 

precious memories that we hold onto with all of our might. 

Happy 100th birthday to Kokoro Kai participants Helen Kubo and 

Sallie Yamada, as well as to special guest Fumi Hayashida! All three 

ladies turned 100 this year, celebrating all the joys of life. 

Teatro ZinZanni comes to Seattle Keiro! Young and 

aspiring acrobats and circus entertainers unicycled, tumbled, 

balanced, and juggled at Seattle Keiro, demonstrating amazing 

feats of strength, agility, and flexibility. Teatro ZinZanni’s Chef 

Charly Dedessus le moutier, mentor and master of the troupe, 

showcased the talented students of the School of Acrobatics and 

New Circus Arts (SANCA), delighting the audience with his 

humor and talent. The event was kicked off with our third Guest 

Chef luncheon, featuring Chef Shinya Asami and his delicious 

autumn matsutake dishes for the Seattle Keiro residents and 

special guests from Nikkei Manor, Kokoro Kai, and around 

the community. Thanks to all who made this 

memorable and wonderful day possible for 

the residents and participants!

Golf Is Good 

Our 10th Annual Founders’ Golf Benefit was 

full of fun, team spirit, and a hole-in-one! The weather – 

ideal, the greens – immaculate, and the golfers – on their 

game (or, if not, they had a great time, anyway). Whether 

it was the joy of sport, the satisfaction of competitive 

auction bidding, or more food than anyone thought he/ 

she could eat in one day, it was a fantastic day, and we 

eagerly look forward to next year. Thanks to the sponsors,

After a long day of golf, Bill and Beth 

Kawahara bid on several of the tempting 

items displayed at silent auction. 

Competition was fierce for over 80 

unique and desirable packages, from cool 

Nintendo games to stunning artwork to 

rounds of golf with some of our favorite 

players. The silent auction alone generated 

over $8,000! 

Doug Tsujii emerged the winner of the live 

auction for an autographed cd and photo with 

jazz pianist Keiko Matsui. Bryon Tokunaga, 

event co-chair, matched Doug’s bid and also 

received his autograph and moment in the sun 

with Keiko. 

It’s a Hole-in-One! 

“Someone got a hole in one!” The excited message 

quickly spread around Rainier Golf & Country Club 

during this year’s golf tournament. The question that 

immediately followed was, “Who was it?” 

The honor and the $10,000 prize money went to 

Howie Leung, member of the Book ‘em Dano 

team! Howie, a frequent golfer in our tournaments, 

holds a 9 handicap and is the first golfer to ever 

hit a hole-in-one in the history of Nikkei Concerns 

tournaments. (The hole-in-one also won him the Men’s 

Closest to the Pin on Rainier’s Hole #6.) 

This is Howie’s third hole-in-one but the first to win a 

big cash prize. 

Congratulations, Howie! Your hole-in-one was the 

crowning glory of our 10th anniversary.
