First published in English in Rotterdam 1686. - Some letters, containing an account of
what seemed most remarkable in travelling through Switzerland, Italy and parts of
Germany. Lowndes remarks ‘This curious and entertaining narrative surpasses everything
in its kind extant, in the style, sentiments, matter, and method. The observations
upon the corruptions and impostures of property will afford pleasure to every
consistent Protestant’ (Cox I, p.110).

4to. Contemporary limp vellum, handwritten title on spine. Title-page printed in red
and black, with large folding engraved plate of the shipwreck by Jacobus Cortese
Burgundus after Antonius Birckhart (ca. 32,5 x 44 cm) and several nicely engraved
head and tail pieces and initials. (28),202 pp. € 1.850,00
First Italian edition. - This book, written by Father Cabral (pseudonym of Cesare
Cordara (1704-1785), is dealing with the martyr Ignatius de Azevedo from Porto
(1528-1570), who worked in Brazil as Visitator for the Jesuit Order. On 15 July 1570,
his ship wrecked near the Canary Islands and he was killed together with his 39 companions
at sea by French Calvinist pirates. In 1854 these ‘40 martyrs of Brazil’ were
canonized. The magnificent engraved plate depict the shipwreck and the killing. - A
few stains otherwise an excellent copy of notable rarity.

Schuur Rondebosch, Muizenberg, and Kalk Bay and St. James. - Mint condition.
