what seemed most remarkable in travelling through Switzerland, Italy and parts of<br />

Germany. Lowndes remarks ‘This curious and entertaining narrative surpasses everything<br />

in its kind extant, in the style, sentiments, matter, and method. The observations<br />

upon the corruptions and impostures of property will afford pleasure to every<br />

consistent Protestant’ (Cox I, p.110).<br />

and black, with large folding engraved plate of the shipwreck by Jacobus Cortese<br />

Burgundus after Antonius Birckhart (ca. 32,5 x 44 cm) and several nicely engraved<br />

head and tail pieces and initials. (28),202 pp. € 1.850,00<br />

First Italian edition. - This book, written by Father Cabral (pseudonym of Cesare<br />

Cordara (1704-1785), is dealing with the martyr Ignatius de Azevedo from Porto<br />

(1528-1570), who worked in Brazil as Visitator for the Jesuit Order. On 15 July 1570,<br />

his ship wrecked near the Canary Islands and he was killed together with his 39 companions<br />

at sea by French Calvinist pirates. In 1854 these ‘40 martyrs of Brazil’ were<br />

canonized. The magnificent engraved plate depict the shipwreck and the killing. - A<br />

few stains otherwise an excellent copy of notable rarity.<br />
