‘This is the true history of the romantic adventures of Hans Staden, the Hessian adventurer,<br />

who set sail for Brazil in 1547 to seek his fortune, and was taken captive two years<br />

later, by the Tupinamba Indians, whilst assisting the Portuguese in one of their earliest<br />

Brazilian settlements at Santo Amaro. He remained nine months, in their hands,<br />

escaped on board a French ship for Dieppe, then went to London and Antwerp in 1566’<br />

(Cox II, p.290). ‘The book enjoyed considerable succes in Holland where it became popular<br />

and appeared in numerous editions’ (Borba de Moraes II, p.833). - A scarce chapbook<br />

edition of an inportant early account of Brazil. - (Some margins skilfully restored).<br />
