PROGRAMME<br />

PHILOSOPHy<br />

The MMBEC is an excit<strong>in</strong>g new Masters degree that has been developed to meet the needs<br />

<strong>of</strong> the coach<strong>in</strong>g fraternity as well as bus<strong>in</strong>ess needs. More <strong>and</strong> more bus<strong>in</strong>esses are employ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>executive</strong> coaches <strong>and</strong> are dem<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g high quality knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills from them. This<br />

Masters degree will address these needs.<br />

The programme is grounded <strong>in</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> pillars:<br />

• Course work<br />

• Research<br />

• Supervised practical coach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

• Personal growth <strong>and</strong> <strong>master</strong>y<br />

• Bus<strong>in</strong>ess context <strong>of</strong> coach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Each <strong>of</strong> these pillars are discussed below.<br />

Course work<br />

The coursework consists <strong>of</strong> eight modules, each 40 hours <strong>in</strong> duration. There will be 320 hours<br />

<strong>of</strong> classroom content. This is the most comprehensive Coach<strong>in</strong>g Masters <strong>in</strong> South Africa. There<br />

are four modules per year. The classroom content will be highly <strong>in</strong>teractive <strong>and</strong> focus on develop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g edge competencies. There will be an <strong>in</strong>tegration <strong>of</strong> new knowledge skills,<br />

practice <strong>and</strong> self-development both <strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> across modules. It is envisaged that best practices,<br />

case studies, lead<strong>in</strong>g guest speakers <strong>and</strong> well-researched trends will be shared <strong>in</strong> these<br />

sessions. The programme will assess knowledge obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> these areas through exams <strong>and</strong><br />

assignments.<br />

researCh<br />

As coach<strong>in</strong>g is an emerg<strong>in</strong>g field it is vital that the body <strong>of</strong> knowledge is <strong>in</strong>creased with empirical<br />

research. Wits Bus<strong>in</strong>ess School prides itself on its strong focus on research <strong>and</strong> expects<br />

a high st<strong>and</strong>ard from its students <strong>in</strong> contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the body <strong>of</strong> knowledge <strong>in</strong> the area. The<br />

programme beg<strong>in</strong>s with the Research Methodology module <strong>and</strong> dur<strong>in</strong>g the first year students<br />

are expected to work on their research, h<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong> early <strong>in</strong> the second year. Students<br />

will all receive supervision dur<strong>in</strong>g their research from faculty with knowledge <strong>and</strong> experience<br />

<strong>in</strong> coach<strong>in</strong>g research.<br />

supervised praCtiCal CoaCh<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Students will be required to do practical coach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> will need to submit reports. They will<br />

receive supervision on their practical work. Supervision is a structured learn<strong>in</strong>g engagement<br />

<strong>in</strong> which participants reflect on real-world coach<strong>in</strong>g experiences to deepen <strong>and</strong> extend cognitive,<br />

emotional <strong>and</strong> practice skills. The purposes, processes <strong>and</strong> relationship dynamics <strong>of</strong><br />

supervision are similar to fields such as counsell<strong>in</strong>g, education, <strong>and</strong> psychotherapy. The Masters<br />

degree is based on GSAEC’s academic st<strong>and</strong>ards, which make clear dist<strong>in</strong>ctions between:<br />

(1) the knowledge <strong>and</strong> theory that assist the practice <strong>of</strong> <strong>executive</strong> <strong>and</strong> organisation coach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(2) the core coach<strong>in</strong>g competencies (3) the coach<strong>in</strong>g process. GSAEC’s academic st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

<strong>and</strong> our Masters degree seek to dist<strong>in</strong>guish between what coaches know, what they are able<br />

to do, <strong>and</strong> the work that occurs jo<strong>in</strong>tly between coach <strong>and</strong> client with<strong>in</strong> the boundaries <strong>of</strong> the<br />

coach<strong>in</strong>g process. The coach<strong>in</strong>g process <strong>and</strong> coach<strong>in</strong>g competencies are assessed through<br />

the supervised practicals.<br />

personal growth <strong>and</strong> Mastery<br />

Much <strong>of</strong> the success <strong>of</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess coach<strong>in</strong>g lies with<strong>in</strong> the personal relationship between the<br />

<strong>executive</strong> coach <strong>and</strong> the client, <strong>and</strong> as such, it is important that the coach constantly be aware<br />

<strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> relationship <strong>and</strong> self with<strong>in</strong> the process. A great coach is constantly focused on<br />

self-improvement <strong>and</strong> their own development. The programme builds on this with Personal<br />

Mastery sessions (two even<strong>in</strong>gs per module). Assessments <strong>of</strong> students also forms part <strong>of</strong> this<br />

process. Emotional <strong>and</strong> Social Intelligence are explored.<br />

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Context <strong>of</strong> CoaCh<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Wits Bus<strong>in</strong>ess School prides itself on its bus<strong>in</strong>ess knowledge <strong>and</strong> places coach<strong>in</strong>g firmly with<strong>in</strong><br />

a bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> organisational development context. The students learn about Strategy, F<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />

Acumen, Organisational Development, Human Resources <strong>and</strong> Market<strong>in</strong>g. Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Simulations<br />

<strong>and</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Games are played <strong>in</strong> order to equip the student with a deeply grounded<br />

experience as well as theoretical knowledge <strong>of</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. A core part <strong>of</strong> the curriculum<br />

<strong>in</strong>cludes guest presentations from several CEOs <strong>and</strong> Directors from Corporates with<strong>in</strong><br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>executive</strong> coach<strong>in</strong>g occurs. This <strong>in</strong>cludes exposure to various skills, processes <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terventions,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g: entry contract<strong>in</strong>g, assessment <strong>and</strong> feedback, goal sett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

facilitat<strong>in</strong>g change <strong>and</strong> development, outcome evaluation <strong>and</strong> term<strong>in</strong>ation, end<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> longterm<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

4. CoaCh<strong>in</strong>g skills<br />

The skills <strong>of</strong> Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> Executive Coach<strong>in</strong>g are taught <strong>in</strong> this course. Relationship skills such<br />

as development <strong>of</strong> trust, the mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g with the client <strong>and</strong> how to leverage the<br />

coach<strong>in</strong>g relationship through structures <strong>and</strong> support, <strong>and</strong> action <strong>and</strong> results, are all part <strong>of</strong><br />

this module. The course will support students to become pr<strong>of</strong>essional bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> <strong>executive</strong><br />

coaches <strong>and</strong> the importance <strong>of</strong> organisational context will be emphasised. The coach<strong>in</strong>g skills<br />

are specifically focused on bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> <strong>executive</strong> coach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> encompass leadership <strong>and</strong><br />
