WHY NEMO? Wider adoption however of electromobility is constrained by a number of challenges. Electrification of road transport – often referred to as electromobility or e-mobility – has the potential to drastically reduce air pollutants contributing to climate change as well as city noise population. EV range and charging issues A main factor limiting the driving range of Electric Vehicles (EV) is lack of interoperability in charging infrastructure and other electromobility services. Actors in this domain currently have to deal with a broad spectrum of EV charging system hardware, service providers, standards and protocols, which can vary greatly from a technological perspective. Energy and grid-related issues Electromobility faces the challenge of the impact to the electric grid network caused by increasing EV numbers but also by new charging technologies. The main issue is to define and deploy a smart way to manage EV recharging. The electromobility ecosystem is not connected to the grid in a sustainable way. Data exchange issues A major challenge in providing a seamless experience and easy service are the complex data structures and different formats in exchanged information. The set-up of a pan-European charging infrastructure is currently hindered by the lack of a common data and information model and the lack of common framework for commercial agreements. Diverse e-roaming platforms The lack of interoperability gave rise to the recent concept of electro-mobility roaming platforms, referred to as e-roaming or eRoaming. The problem of interoperability between platforms remains.
NEMO VISION NeMo is working to create a Hyper-Network of tools, models and services which will provide seamless interoperability of electromobility services, creating an open, distributed and widely accepted ecosystem. This will make electromobility more attractive and facilitate its mass adoption in the road transport sector. NeMo will help to boost the market share of EVs by enabling accessibility to charging infrastructure, ICT services and wider B2B interconnectivity. NeMo will facilitate increased availability, better planning and more secure electric grid operation. It will also create business opportunities for electromobility actors, allowing developers of new services and products to make them available to a wider market, in a cost-effective way. NeMo aims to replicate the success of seamless roaming (as in mobile telecommunications) for electromobility services.
