Mappings
The following researches give an idea of Trier´s
surroundings and its infrastructure according to
the current situations of the site.
7

Trier is located in Rhineland Palatinate, whose history can
be dated back to the Roman empire, is claimed to be the
oldest city in Germany.
Lots of the historic buildings are still visible all over
the city in Trier today. The historic Maximin and Paulin
church are located next to the site and cast a significant
influence on it.
The site is currently a commercially used place, there’s
the post office building, which is the tallest building in
the city, a shopping center located in a history building
on the north-east of the site. The rest of the site contains
the big parking lot and a few storage buildings.
„The site is located in an area that is high in both mobility
train station and Trier city center. Making this place an ideal
area to become a living quarter.“
Because of the surrounding roadways and the
railway of the main city station there´s a lot of
noise influencing the site.
Greenareas of the city
There‘s an obvious green belt located around the center of
Trier where the Roman walls used to be. On the east side
of Trier, there are hills that plant grapes for the wine industry.
On the west side is mainly the forest and allotment
gardens. Along the Mosel River there’s also a green riverside,
which provides a place for excercising and relaxing.
Events are also held along the Mosel River.
Like in most cities the center of Trier is the most
prosperous location. Outside the city center the
infrastructure decreases.
Because of the close location of the site to the
center most daily basis things are in walking
distance.
The center has plenty of shopping possibilities
along with all necessary healthcare facilities and a
variety of cultural offers.
A disadvantage of Trier is the location of both universities,
which are near the borders of the city.
Typologies
The content of this exercise is to use the
four building typologies: linear, point, block,
and carpet typology on the site, in order to
compare them with each other, and to find
the pros and cons of each typology.
17

part is left to be a vertical
with the hills in Trier.
6. By creating openings on top,
sunlight.
2. A way through the site.
3. Creating an irregular shape
plaza following the form of the
building. With this shape, it is
possible to create two plazas,
where it can be used as
differents events.
8. The central plaza is the main
view point of the site, where
people can see most of the
buildings from there.
7. Since the left side is the main
entrance to the site, the design
is to push some upper floor
boards backwards, to make a
welcome feeling to the site.
The carpet typology has a lot of positive effect on the site.
It creates a high dense building structure with a more
introverted atmosphere for its community. Because of its
massive percentage of sealed surface, it‘s hard to get direct
sunlight into the structure. The groundfloor is rather
suitable for commercial and parking areas than living spaces.
The compact of the design creates a better community.
However, the compacted design leaves less privacy. The
massiveness of the complex is unnatural compared to the
existing grid of Trier.
The advantage of point typology is a high quantity of living
spaces on the small amount of sealed surfaces. Since the
buildings are situated seperately, it‘s easier to get natural
light into the building, also with the thinness of the
building, the shades move quicker. Because of the single
positioning of each building, it‘s difficult to create defined
urban spaces. The ground floor is the only part of the
building connected to the outside, which brings privacy to
the upper floors.
Because of the linear direction of this typology, it has the
potential of creating clear define urban spaces. With its
different ways of arrangement, the linear typology either
creates public or rather private spaces. In order to reach
higher levels, one either needs plenty staircases or arcades,
due to its divided inner cell structure. To get direct
sunlight in each cell, the orientation of the whole building
is limited. The long sides of the buildings are a good barrier
to the noise.
2. The passage through the site is
based on the original driveway,
however, we decided to keep the cars
out of the site, which in turn becomes
the main passage through the site.
1. Connect two other buildings
outside the site, in order to create a
bigger block-like concept. The
Maximin church is our central point,
and with a design like this, the site
can be roughly divided into four
parts.
3. The shape of the buildings
are based on the lines
The main advantage of the block typology is its defined
and closed urban structure. Each block has its own intimate
core, which can be used as courtyards and gardens. The
inner structure of the block typology is similiar to the linear
typology, needing a lot of circulation spaces. The inner
corners of the block don‘t get natural lights, that makes
them only suitable for circulation or secondary rooms. As
shown in the shadow pictos, one can tell that the shadows
of the structure shades parts of its own. Since the already
existing urban structures around the site are mainly open
blocks, the block typology would be in accordance with the
context of the surroundings.
The content of this exercise is to figure out the
highest living density and the best building orientation,
for which the chosen block typology fits
best with Trier’s urban context and it contains the
most inhabitants.
The orientation of the buildings were designed to
avoid the shades cast from the other buildings and
to create the best living quality. The chosen floor
plans for the inner structure is mainly on its high
dense character, where the most spaces can be
used up to its most.
The Maximin church also stands a significant role
in this exercise, that it contains some historic relics
underneath the building. To make this site more
interesting and opening to the public, the plazas
are designed to show the relics and a recreation
place for people.
The main road that goes through the whole site
connects the two plazas, giving it an open and welcoming
atmosphere.
“Carpet typology definitely accommodates more
people than block typology, but considering the sun
light and the relation between the typologies around
the city, it makes more sense to use block typology.“
This scenario is based on a community concept.
Inverted blocks were used to create a community
meeting space in the center on the blocks. Those
places contain different shared usages like, shared
gardens, an outdoors stage, a playground, sport
activities and a BBQ area.
To shield these communites from the public city
the buildings were set on top of a baselevel. These
baselevels are used as commercial, parking and
storage spaces. For an exchange between the community
meeting spaces, bridges are set between the
buildings. Some of the apartments from the top are
connected to the commercial spaces in the baselevel,
which allows residents to combine working and
living. The whole site is car prohibited, but can be
accessed by bike.
