‘Ongkot and Tosakanth’ 2012
Oil on canvas
Well-versed in rhetoric, Ongkot, the monkey prince, was sent
by Rama to negotiate the release of Sita from Tosakanth.
He made a throne with his twisted long tail in equal height
as Tosakanth’s throne. Both sides hotly debated over the
release of Sita but eventually failed to reach an agreement.
The war thus ensued.
Here Padanupong is true to the grammar of Thai classical
drawings -the side backdrop, the clothing, etc.
He added the casual elements of khon sod in the composition
— actors, especially the comedian, sometimes used random
hats and other informal headgears in performing khon sod.
The curtains around them were painted in such a way to
resemble the conversation balloons in mangas.
