Sing a Foundation Of Hope
Our mission to prevent, control and cure arthritis is more urgent today than ever
before. Today arthritis is the nation’s most common cause of disability, aecting 46
million people with more than 4 million of them in Texas and nearly 1 million in
Oklahoma. By 2030, that number will increase to an estimated 67 million
Americans. Not only will they face the challenges of living with arthritis, but they
also may be at increased risk for diabetes, heart disease and other conditions linked
to decreased physical activity.
e Arthritis Foundation South Central Region and our hundreds of volunteers,
donors, partners and sta throughout Texas and Oklahoma, work tirelessly each
and every day to build a foundation of hope for everyone living with arthritis. We
are steadfast in our commitment to creating a world that is free from arthritis pain.
ese challenging economic times have not deterred us. We continue to make
signicant investments in research, education, communication outreach and
advocacy to help improve the quality of life for all people with arthritis. In this
report, you will discover how we are raising awareness about arthritis, and nd out
more about the research we support and the evidence-based exercise and other
programs we are bringing to people across the country. Most important, you will
read the inspirational stories of people on the frontlines of the battle against
arthritis.
In 2008, the Arthritis Foundation celebrated its 60th anniversary. It is our fervent
hope that 60 years from now, the foundation we are setting today will give us much
more to celebrate: a world free from arthritis pain.
Sincerely,
Public Health
Sing the Foundation to Reduce the Burden Arthritis
e Arthritis Foundation’s recent initiatives set a strong foundation for
improving the quality of life for the growing number of people with
arthritis in the South Central Region throughout Texas and Oklahoma.
Changing the public’s perception of arthritis and increasing awareness about
Arthritis Foundation programs and services is critical to inspiring actions that will
make a dierence in the lives of the more than 4 million Texans and nearly 1
million Oklahomans with the disease. We made important progress elevating
awareness and expanding services throughout the region. rough our leadership
and the development of strong partnerships, we have set a foundation for
improving the quality of life for the growing number of people with arthritis for
years to come.
Inspiring Action, Improving Lives
To help expand public health messages and to bring attention to arthritis on a
broad scale, the Arthritis Foundation partnered with the Ad Council to develop a
new public service advertising campaign. roughout 2009, the Arthritis
Foundation worked with the Ad Council and Young & Rubicam, one of the top
U.S. advertising agencies, on the campaign. It is set to roll out in early 2010 and
targets people with osteoarthritis age 55 and older.
Moving is the best medicine.
Keeping active and losing weight are just two
of the ways that you can ght osteoarthritis pain.
In fact, for every pound you lose, that’s four pounds
less pressure on each knee. For information on
managing pain, go to ghtarthritispain.org.
Life Improvement Series Classes
help people with arthritis maintain their mobility.
In the South Central Region, we provide educational forums, a speakers’ bureau
and distribute materials in response to more than 750 requests each month. e
Arthritis Foundation, South Central Region also trains instructors for exercise
programs held at more than 150 locations in Texas and 56 in Oklahoma. We also
raise awareness through health fairs throughout the bi-state region and partner
with like-minded institutions and organizations.
People with arthritis face unique challenges. To help them better manage their
disease, we’ve developed outreach and educational tools to help Texans and
Oklahomans realize life-changing possibilities.
We oer many programs to help educate and improve the lives of those with
arthritis throughout the Texas and Oklahoma communities. We’ve continued to
expand our Life Improvement Series with evidence based exercise programs that
have shown tremendous results – the AF Exercise Program and the AF Aquatic
Program.
2009 National Juvenile Arthritis Conference - Houston, TX
2009 Juvenile Arthritis Family Day - Tulsa, OK
e South Texas Division welcomed the National Juvenile Arthritis
Conference in Houston and the Eastern Oklahoma Chapter hosted the
Juvenile Arthritis Family Day in Tulsa in 2009. ese signicant events
helped impact the lives of hundreds of families through education and
inspiration.
We continue our support of national public health initiatives on the local level,
helping those who desperately need to take control of their arthritis. e Texans
and Oklahomans we reach through these programs, and provide with information
and self-management strategies, have a better perspective on their disease and, in
turn, better outcomes.
In 2009, we continued to develop partnerships and initiatives to improve the health
of millions of Texans and Oklahomans with arthritis. We work to prevent arthritis
by educating people therefore helping them:
• Modify their risk factors
• Reduce the impact of arthritis through early detection and treatment
• Delay/eliminate the onset of disability by minimizing the consequences of
arthritis.
Increasing Our Reach
e Arthritis Foundation South Central Region has helped fund a range of
initiatives including:
• Increasing the number of Life Improvement Series programs oered in Texas
and in communities throughout central and eastern Oklahoma. In Oklahoma, the
Arthritis Foundation is also working with the Chickasaw Nation to bring the Life
Improvement Series to this important local constituency.
• Supporting academic institutions to research the safety and health benets of
new evidence-based programs, such as the Arthritis Foundation Tai Chi Program,
to help people with arthritis improve their mobility and strength, which may
decrease falls that result in hip fractures.
• Supporting research to develop two screening tools for people with joint pain –
one to help people identify their risk for osteoarthritis and the lower severity, and
the other to help primary care physicians identify people with early inammatory
arthritis.
• Promoting the need for early diagnosis and treatment of inammatory arthritis
through the Arthritis Foundation’s Inammatory Arthritis Initiative, to facilitate
early diagnosis and treatment of people with forms of inammatory arthritis,
ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.
Research Supporting
Research holds the k to tomoow’s advances in preventing,
Individual Researchers
controlling and curing arthritis.
Nationally, the Arthritis Foundation funded $16.1 million in research
grants and more than $2 million in the South Central Region.
As the largest nonprot supporter for arthritis research in the world,
the Arthritis Foundation lls a critical role in the big picture of
arthritis research. e Foundation’s research program complements
government and industry-based research. e organization focuses
on training new investigators and pursuing innovative strategies for
preventing, controlling and curing arthritis.
When the Arthritis Foundation began its post-doctoral fellowship
program in the 1950s, academic medical centers in this country
were just beginning to develop an interest in arthritis, and arthritis
research was almost nonexistent. Since then, the Arthritis
Foundation has funded more than $415 million in research grants
to 1,200 fellows beginning their careers in arthritis research.
ese researchers have made signicant advances in the
understanding and treatment of arthritis, including the
development of biologic drugs for the treatment of rheumatoid
arthritis and juvenile arthritis. e work of these Arthritis
Foundation-sponsored researchers has brought tremendous relief to
people with arthritis and has laid a foundation of hope for the
future.
Arthritis Foundation research funds oen are used to train new
investigators and pursue novel elds of inquiry. By supporting
researchers throughout the U.S. as well as in the South Central
Region, we help support the pool of arthritis experts who may be
potential keys to a cure. Finding a cure for arthritis is a top priority
in everything we do in the South Central Region. We continue to
be relentless in our ght to help build a world free of arthritis pain
and a brighter tomorrow for all Texans and Oklahomans impacted
by this disease.
In Texas and Oklahoma, we support a peer-reviewed research
program.
Advocacy
A Strong Foundation for Bi-State Legislative Action
In the South Central Region, we advocate for legislation that will improve
the lives of those who suer from arthritis and encourage support for
funding to nd a cure.
Our advocacy work in 2008 set a foundation for change in 2009 and beyond. We
worked to position the Arthritis Foundation as the leader in setting the direction
for public policy and government funding aecting arthritis-related diseases and
arthritis disability at the Texas and Oklahoma state level.
We continued to cultivate relationships with elected ocials at the state and federal
level and advocated on behalf of those with arthritis. In addition, our organization
worked with the Department of State Health Services Arthritis Advisory
Committee to update the Arthritis Plan for Texas and continued our work on
funding for the State Arthritis Program for the 2009 state legislative session.
In Oklahoma, our sta and volunteers were instrumental in town hall meetings
with U.S. Senator Tom Coburn to solicit his support of the Arthritis Prevention,
Control and Cure Act. ey were also responsible for the successful recruitment of
more than 50 new advocates.
rough our advocacy eorts and collaborations with representatives from Texas
and Oklahoma State governmental agencies and professional healthcare
organizations we work to increase expenditures for arthritis research to accelerate
the progress.
Our public policy strategy is simple. We serve as the voice of millions of Texans
and Oklahomans with arthritis to help enhance the benets of public and private
health programs relating to arthritis.
Personal Perspectives
Bethany
Demas
Bethany Demas is a sweet, full-of-life,
open-hearted pre-teen. At the age of 12, she
did what other girls her age love to do: met
with friends at the skating rink, went to
school dances, texted her BFF with all the
latest acronyms (LOL), walked around the
neighborhood to visit friends, and played video games.
She led a normal life up until about a year ago. Now each of these activities comes with a price. She
has recently been diagnosed with Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Rheumatoid Arthritis (PJRA).
For those of you unfamiliar with this disease, it has no known cure, is extremely painful and
changes the way you think about every movement.
Polyarticular arthritis is normally a diagnosis of arthritis aecting more than 5 joints. Bethany has
well over 20 joints aected at any given time. Some days she couldn’t get out of bed without
assistance, get dressed independently, or button her clothes. Her parents had to be careful to
monitor her activities from day to day, as overdoing it one day causes grief and pain for several days
later. It is a dicult balance between letting Beth live a normal childhood lled with activities, and
protecting her from the impacts to her body from doing everything a normal child does. Bethany's
dad said, "seeing a child, your child, endure so much pain is like nothing we have ever experienced.”
Now at 13, on a weekly medical regimen that includes 48 pills and injections, the road to normalcy
may be within reach. Bethany is such a strong girl. She is the one that gives us hope, and she is the
one that is making the dierence daily between allowing the disease to take over or to ght back.
She is the one who ghts through the pain and makes the conscious decisions to overpower it every
day. Aer months of treatments and doses, her life now mimics that of her friends. With careful
management, she is able to do the things a normal teenager should be doing.
She has since joined the 7th Grade Sand Springs Cheer Team. At rst, her family felt this might be
too much for her to handle; she again proved to be strong. Not only did her cheer team take 1st
place in their division at their rst competition, but they also won 1st Place Junior Grand
Champions at the event. She was able to showcase the fact that she is a strong survivor to over 1000
spectators. e road is far from over, but there is hope for the hundreds of thousands of children
dealing with similar situations.
