ELCOME
Hello all and a first ever warm welcome
to Workington Town RL and to all their
officials, players and supporters. It’s a long
way down from Cumbria and we trust
you’ve had a safe and pleasant journey. We
are delighted and excited to be playing a
club with such tradition and heritage that
the “Town” brings to Oxfordshire.
Last week saw Tim and the boys secure
local bragging rights over Hemel Stags and
more importantly bag points to kick start
the League 1 campaign. I don’t suppose
anyone would realize, as it’s only intra club
trivia, but Tim created a club record last
week which he was unaware of. That was
his seventh straight win against Hemel and
while it produces no silverware, I believe
it’s worthy of note in my eyes. Well done
Tim and to all the backroom staff on such
a professional performance and positive
start, the improvements are evident.
The opening round of League 1 brought
varying score lines and all eyes were focused
on Toronto and Skolars, well no shock horror
at the resulting score line. Toronto ooze with
experienced SL quality and their resources
are on a fast track mission to that tier and
good luck with that mission. Elsewhere
tighter score lines had a more competitive
look, but you can’t deny the crowd increase
and media attention Toronto generated.
I only wonder if that will be sustainable
if such mismatched score lines continue
to be produced. I can’t see it as full
time v part time is going to result in big
deficit scores. From our young squad’s
perspective I’m in danger of sounding
over protective, I openly admit we
have player welfare concerns and fears.
The Wolfpack have players with 50 to 100
plus SL games and then pit them against
the likes of us and other expansion clubs
who are blooding young 19 – 21 year olds?
Questions do rise in the mind regarding
duty of care.
In the community game, our best wishes
go out to 3 young Oxford Cavaliers players
this weekend who are on representative
duty with the West of England RL team.
George Lenton Hall, Dan Brooker and Dan
Jamieson face the Irish Wolfhounds U20’s
in Dublin. Great news and good luck lads
from all at Oxford RL, I’m sure it will be a
wonderful experience and a weekend to
remember for you and your families.
Back to today and summer rugby has so far
shown us no sunshine, could today be the
start? Workington will stand as the biggest
test our young side will have faced to date.
I know they will relish it. To all “Town’s”
supporters and officials enjoy the day and I
wish you a safe journey back home.

trip down and you have a good afternoon
with us.
We’ve had a pleasing start but it will take
4 or 5 rounds to unfold before we get a
picture of League 1 but I’m delighted with
the character our lads have shown. To still
be in both Cups is unchartered waters for
me plus a good win over the neighbours
is always pleasing. However, we are work
in progress but progress is happening and
I am proud of the players and the positive
start is fantastic for our confidence. The
pleasing aspect is seeing game plans being
delivered, we‘ve performed in poor playing
conditions and it bodes well. Mentally we are
maturing steadily.
We have a start to build upon, growing
self belief and trust in one another. This is
from honest, hard work and desire from the
squad and staff. We will stay grounded and
today will be a stern test against a strong
professional team who were playing in the
Championship last season. “Worky’s” desire
and ambition will be to bounce back up
quickly and they will be highly motivated for
our first meeting.

occur, be it for work or family commitments
that crop up so we need teammates to step
in knowing the task and the job they have to
do. We’re trying to build that depth and as a
group hold that ethos. For the staff it’s great
working with that mind set.
It’s good to see new and familiar faces at
the games to date and I hope the numbers
continue to build. The Junior Supporters
mascots have brought a good family
atmosphere and Lewis and Megan have
enjoyed their appearances a lot I believe
and we are very pleased to have mascots
involved.

I expect a tough rugged game from them as
they have a good blend of experience and
young talent. They are a true 80 minute side
as their two close games with Newcastle
Thunder indicate so far this season.
We’ve had weddings, illness and injuries to
contend with so far and that’s why we have
a squad. If I have learned anything over the
last couple of years it is that it is not a 17
man game, it’s a full united squad journey

JOYNTY
Prop Jake Joynt is reigniting his rugby
career with the Blues after time away from
the game and his ‘no substitute for hard
work’ approach is earning admirers with fans
and respect with team mates alike.
In the 7Rifles bonding weekend, where the
squad were put under stress and hardship,
Joynty’s resilience and character emerged
to hold and push his peers through new pain
thresholds.
For a young man he has a wise head on his
shoulders which the coaches describe as
those of a natural leader. Through preseason
and a short space of 3 games this is
becoming evident.
SIMON “OZZY” HICKS
Ozzy has been with the Oxford team from
day one! Appearing at the launch in his
RAF flying suit and declaring his support in
bringing rugby league to Oxfordshire. Ozzy
is the team’s Sports Therapist and masseur
as well as being involved with the RAF RL
and GB Armed Forces RL teams.
When he’s on duty flying Ozzy’s responsible
for loading and transporting everything
from general supplies to heavy military
vehicles. Hence his natural attention to
detail and calm approach to game day
preparation. With his humour and flyboy
charm, Ozzy is a pillar in the back room set
up at Oxford and through changes he has
remained an invaluable constant.

WORKINGTON TOWN
Workington Town R.L.F.C. are a semiprofessional
rugby league club playing in
West Cumbria. They were relegated from
the Kingstone Press Championship last year
and will be a strong contender for a quick
return. Their stadium is called the Derwent
Park, which they share with Workington
Comets, a speedway team.
Workington Town RLFC were formed in the
Royal Oak Hotel, Workington in December
1944. Many of Workington Town’s board
came from local football team Workington
AFC’s board and the team ground shared
with “the Reds” at Borough Park. The club
registered as a business and for membership
of the Rugby Football League. A first board
of directors was formed and the application
for membership was agreed at a meeting
held on 23 January 1945 at the Grosvenor
Hotel, Manchester. They were the first side
from Cumberland to enter the professional
rugby league.
They became Rugby League Champions
in 1951 and also won the Challenge Cup a
year later in 1952. Their nickname is simply
‘Town’, though they are sometimes referred
to as ‘Worky’ by fans of other teams. Their
local rivals are Whitehaven, who joined
the league three years after Town and are
Oxford’s hosts in the Challenge Cup in a
couple of weeks time.

Carl Forber
Phil is Town’s marquee signing for 2017 and
is a true professional with great experience.
He’s a representative of Wales RL and has
played at club level for Huddersfield, Hull
Kingston Rovers, Halifax, Oldham, Swinton
and Bradford. Phil is a versatile forward
giving his coaches options to operate as a
Prop, Hooker, or Loose forward.
Strong dynamic runs are Phil’s trade mark
with a good off load and rugged defense.
A talented half back who recently reached
the milestone of over 500 goals kicked and
over 200 games played for Town and will be
a key figure in the campaign for promotion.
The experience is one of Carl’s biggest
assets to Workington as well as a natural
distributer of the ball who can move the
team around the pitch. He will be at the
hub of Town’s attacking play and a great
influence on and off the field.
