Dan Murphy here.
Pleased to see that you’re reading the fine print. I’ll try to keep
it quick and painless. I am a 12 year veteran of freelance design
projects ranging from 3d modeling to MIG/TIG welding. I’ve
recently taken leave from a successful Design and Build firm that
I co-founded to refocus the vision as business grows. My aim is to
freelance as I plan the launch of two satellite firms in mid-2018.
The basis of my design sensibilities involves simplifying and
humanizing consumer products and experiences. My experience
with design, development and manufacturing is driven by
passion for my clients, quality in my craft, persistent curiosity,
and an inextinguishable desire to improve the world in which
we live and work. I have carried out projects from concept to
completion for top-tier startups (PillPack, KITH, Knoll, Samsung),
and conducted extensive research projects (one of which
culminated as an exhibition sharing a wall with Monet at the
School of the Art Institute of Chicago, LED neon signage for
PillPack, a taxonomy of office chairs for Phaidon Press).
An important part of my process adresses the nuances / details
that are typically lost in translation between the client and
designer, seamless ideation without degradation. I pride myself
as being a great translator of client’s ideas. This passion for
design demands knowledge in every aspect - from aesthetics
and function to research in emerging technologies. The vast
multiverse of subcultures allow for fringe trends to become large
opportunities. Each new project adds to this understanding and
drives exploration in a progressing industry.
“The reward for good work, is more work”
Boston Music Awards
Client: Redefined Agency
Year: 2016
Role: Project Lead (Design/Mfg)
The Boston Music Awards were a tour de
force for PLANWORK. The client provided
a wonderful idea, and we ran with it
from napkin sketch to finished and
on-stage in 4 months. These were CNCplasma
cut, welded, finished, powder
coated and laser etched completely inhouse
by PLANWORK.
Each 2x4’ sheet of .1875” steel produced 8 awards. Plasma cutting is one hell of a
cutting operation, burning oxygen at three times the temperature of the sun.

Brand MArkers
Client: KITH
Year: 2016
Role: Project Lead
KITH asked us to help with their in-store branding as they
spread from SOHO to Miami and Aspen. We explored the store
for opportunities and worked with the Lead Merchandiser
to create a variety of helpful and appropriate solutions. The
project also resulted in concepts used in a window display
campaign involving chainlink fence, riot shields, marble and
social photo opportunities.
Final concepts/IP were presented to KITH and the first run of
180 markers in five styles were produced completely in house
by PLANWORK. Corian, steel, short-run molded plastic and
swappable vinyl graphics are the highlight of this project.
Client: PillPack
Year: 2016
Role: Project Lead
Starting with an ourdoor neon sign
featuring the company’s archetypal pill
packagaing - we completed a series
of interior and exterior proposals for
Fortune 500 pharmacy PillPack. Signage
and desks for the reception of five
locations are currently underway and
nearing completion. Again, everything
was designed and manufactured
completely in-house by PLANWORK.

Retail design
Client: Ministry of Supply
Year: 2015
Team: Project Lead
Growing quickly from Boston to San
Fran, Ministry asked us to design and
build their store for delivery in 23
days. Racks, tables, window deislpays,
interactive displays and a spacesuit
were all shipped flat for onsite
assembly. The highlights of this project
were custom cast aluminum joints
featuring the MOS logo drilled and
tapped for easy setup and breakdown.

below: The Explorer Series fabric developed by MOS is both
waterproof and breathable. We produced a display which trapped
a piece fo this fabric between two cylindrical flanged tanks and
pumped air through the fabric. This highlighted both aspects of
their achievement, waterproof and breathable in one honest and
straightforward technical display.
GRAPHIC DESIGN

mercenary for hire
Freelance
Some projects I’ve worked on to battle the idle hands...
Senior Graphic design
29
Client: Together Festival New England
Year: 2011 - 2014
Role: Senior Graphic Designer
From year 2 through year 5 of the
festival’s span I served as the lead
graphic designer / brand optics advisor.
The initial website was designed and
developed by myself. The festival lineup
posters were also a solo effort. During
the final two years, I was afforded a
team of interns and junior designers
which helped the growing festival keep
ahead of the growing need for design
treatments and assets.

Branding
Full business branding - business cards, flyers, envelopes,
letterheads, investor guidebook and poster templates were
designed and made avaliable for both print and web. We
worked directly with a local printing press to achieve the best
results.

mercenary for hire
Posters
The festival posters were always the most fun - it is the balance
of optics all laid out in one digestible piece of work that
really gets me going.
IT’S A HOBBY
I have always enjoyed a deep satisfaction with the process
of 3d modeling and rendering. I spend a good deal of time in
various online communities sharing ideas and techniques and
celebrating the skills with all the amazing artists out there.
