What Exactly is a Planet?
In our Solar System, a planet is definted as a celestial body which is
in orbit around the Sun, has sufficient mass to assume hydrostatic
equilibrium (a nearly round shape), has “cleared the neighborhood”
around its orbit and is not a moon.
There are actually three types of planets in our solar system - Terrestrial
Planets, Gas Giant Planets, and Dwarf Planets. In this book
we cover the Terrestrial Planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars and
the Gas Giant Planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.) We do
not cover the Dwarf Planets (currently known: Ceres, Pluto, Haumea,
Makemake and Eris) simply because we do not have enough information
about these planets which are farther away and more difficult
to study!
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims
his handiwork.” Psalm 19:1

Glossary of Terms
Planet: a celestial body which is in orbit around the Sun, has sufficient
mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round
shape), has “cleared the neighborhood” around its orbit, and is not a
moon.
Orbit: the curved path of a celestial object or spacecraft around a
star, planet, or moon, especially a periodic elliptical revolution.
Gravity: the force that attracts a body toward the center of the
earth, or toward any other physical body having mass. For most
purposes Newton’s laws of gravity apply, with minor modifications
to take the general theory of relativity into account.
AU (Astronomical Unit): For general reference, we can say that one
astronomical unit (AU) represents the mean distance between the
Earth and our sun. The AU is approximately 150 million kilometers or
93 million miles.
