Veratrum album 

It grows throughout the year in the mountainous 

parts of central Europe and even in Siberia.


Also known as White Hellebore, Veratrum album 

is a member of the Liliaceae. Botanists differ as 

to the taxonomic composition of this very 

diverse and large family. Authorities recognize 

between 12 and 28 tribes within the family.


The root is poisonous, with a paralyzing effect 

on the nervous system. In two cases of fatal 

poisoning from eating the seeds, the toxins 

veratridine & cevadine were found in the blood.


The Veratrum album tincture is prepared from 

the roots of the plant, which are first dried and 

powdered, and then mixed with alcohol.


It was known to the ancients, and was used by 

them to cure insanity and various spasmodic 

affections; and it is said of Hippocrates that he 

cured with it a case resembling Asiatic cholera


Introduced by Hahnemann, and proved by 

himself and 5 provers. Hahnemann's materia 

medica of Veratrum album contains 716 

symptoms, 190 of which come from 

observations by Greding of the effects of 

Veratrum when administered to "maniacs, 

melancholics, and epileptics. R. A. M. L., vol. 3; 

Lembke, N. Z. für H. K., vol. 7, p. 73; Schelling, A. 

H. Z., vol.83, p. 19.

“Physicians have no notion of the power 

possessed by this drug to promote a cure of 

almost one third of the insane in lunatic asylums 

(at all events as a homeopathic intermediate 

remedy), because they know not the peculiar 

kind of insanity in which to employ it, nor the 

dose in which it should be administered in order 

to be efficacious and yet not injurious.”

Hahnemann wrote about Veratrum for 

admittance to the University of Leipsic. On the 

26th of June, 1812, Hahnemann presented a 

Latin thesis, entitled "A Medical Historical 

Dissertation on the Helleborism of the Ancients."


A perfect picture of collapse, with extreme coldness, blueness, and 

weakness, is offered by this drug. 

Post-operative shock with cold sweat on forehead, pale face, rapid, 

feeble pulse. 

Cold perspiration on the forehead, with nearly all complaints. 

Vomiting, purging, and cramps in extremities. 

The profuse, violent retching and vomiting is most characteristic. 

Surgical shock. 

Excessive dryness of all mucous surfaces. 

"Coprophagia" violent mania alternates with silence and refusal to 

talk.

It is mostly in the advance stage of cholera that 

Veratrum album is needed. The patient's 

appearance is distorted and disfigured by the 

disease. He is cold, blue, and collapsed. We 

notice beads of perspiration over the cold 

clammy body particularly on the forehead.


Great nausea and still greater vomiting drain the 

patient of the little vitality that is still left in him.


Thirst is excessive but it only aggravates the 

nausea and the vomiting. Stools are watery and 

inodorous. The most important symptom of all 

is the very huge quantity of the evacuations.


Another symptom of the Veratrum album 

patient is simultaneous diarrhea and vomiting.

It is Indicated when we find diarrhea and 

vomiting with the cold sweat on the head.


Constipation under Veratrum is pronounced. It 

is a sort of chronic constipation. Like Opium and 

a few other remedies, the rectum seems to be 

inert and hence the difficulty in expelling the 

stools, the first portion of which is large and 

the latter part consists of many thin strings.

He has to urge and strain so hard each time that 

he breaks out with cold sweat on the forehead 

which makes him feel weak and exhausted.


Veratrum album is particularly effective in 

treating all varieties of pernicious fevers 

accompanied by general exhaustion, rapid 

sinking of strength and profuse diarrhea.


The time of the paroxysm is often 6 AM. The 

stage of chill is very prominent; it starts with 

great severity, and icy coldness of entire body.


In spite of great chilliness the Veratrum album 

patient craves for cold and refreshing drinks.

As soon as heat succeeds the stage of chill, his 

face gets congested and his brain becomes 

confused but gradually, even before the heat 

thoroughly subsides, cold, clammy sweat bursts 

forth over his forehead; then as the heat 

declines, his face that was red and congested a 

while ago, turns pale, exhausted and haggard.

We have epistaxis under this remedy. It comes 

on during sleep, but only from the right nostril.

Veratrum has a very pronounced action over the 

female sexual system. It produces great irritation 

in the parts and can result in nymphomania.


The menses in Veratrum occur too early and 

they are too profuse. Like Bryonia we notice 

vicarious blood-spitting during the menses.

It also successfully copes with convulsions, and 

eclamptic fits during childbirth. The indications 

are pallor, collapse, anemia, violent cerebral 

congestion, shrieking and tearing of the clothes.


Veratrum album is useful in the spasmodic 

cough. It is caused by a sensation of titillation 

in the throat. Great exhaustion is a keynote.


Cold perspiration, emission of urine when 

coughing and vomiting of tough stringy mucus 

are characteristic during whooping cough.


Serious cases of gastric pain sometimes call for 

Veratrum album. The pain starts in the 

epigastrium. It is at first dull but it grows almost 

agonizing, subsiding slowly again. It is also 

accompanied by shaking and cold sensation.

The Veratrum album need for others 

the rebuilding/replenishing segment


There is a time when the Veratrum album child 

has a need for others. This need can be quite 

strong and explicit, especially in the weak state, 

but it will usually be hidden in the boisterous, 

loud, and aggressive state of this remedy. 

“I came untucked”


The main reason behind it is the need for help, 

which has its roots in different situations.


Pain is felt so strongly during the child's 

complaints, be it vomiting or diarrhea or an 

asthmatic cough or menstrual cramps, that it 

frightens the child, who may, if old enough, 

indicate to you that he thinks he is going to die.

or parent, begging them to get rid of the pain.


This behavior could easily be mistaken for 

someone needing Arsenicum album or 

Phosphorus, but if the child still has any strength 

remaining, the bossiness and discontent will 

turn you away from a Phosphorus prescription.


If they are in the stage of feeling full of their 

power, then the inflated side of them plays itself 

out, but even this side needs to relate to others. 

Here we see generous, benevolent behavior.


This generosity has as its core a deceitfulness 

which more innocent remedy types will not 

perceive. And so deceitful can be used as a 

clear rubric for the remedy Veratrum album.

The violence of Veratrum album is not as well 

known as that of Stramonium, Belladonna or 

Hyoscyamus, but it is present in some patients.

A common form the well known haughtiness 

can take is intolerance toward any opposition.


The coldness of Veratrum children may lead to 

early experimentation with animal dissection.


The combination of brutality and disdain can be 

observed in the interview as the child looks 

directly at you with an expression that is 

neither fear nor anger but a cold appraisal of 

you, in which you decidedly will come up short.


A well known keynote of the remedy is their 

destructiveness of clothes, they cut them up.

The child who acts out his aggression in a violent 

way may even wake up angry, but more likely he 

will just be in a negative mood, especially if he 

meets with any interference or contradiction.


The Veratrum album patient may also react 

to illness with anger, but just as often the 

reverse will be true, and a major temper 

tantrum will actually bring on the illness.


Veratrum album often uses the feet to act out 

violence - stomping or kicking others or even 

thrashing the feet wildly during tantrums.

Delusion segment


In most remedies, mania comes on during 

fevered states, but in Veratrum album it comes 

during the collapsed state, when you see 

diarrhea or chills, or it occurs in meningitis.


The Veratrum album type of delirium is very 

frequently seen in schizophrenia. It tends to 

start out as a quiet, passive type of state.


This idea of pretentiousness plays a larger role 

in the Veratrum album adult who has the wellknown 

Veratrum delusion that he is someone 

else, usually someone great or very famous.


Or the pretentiousness can lead to the 

delusions of being blind or deaf, two symptoms 

that are touted as keynotes of the remedy.

The teenager and adults may think they are 

related to God, that they are omnipotent.

While most of the current literature on 

Veratrum album emphasizes excessive grandiose 

delusions, of being haughty or godlike, the 

opposite is just as often found in Veratrum.


Such a child feels unworthy, that something 

wrong with him. He is ugly. He is unlovable. The 

family does not belong to him. No one likes 

him. He’s a bad person. He only does wrong.


Grasping for help/pleading/praying 

- the sadness and loss segment.


A feeling of loss is characteristic in this remedy.


They talk about killing themselves and ask, 

"Why shouldn't I just finish this life of mine?"

There is a fair amount of crying done by the 

young Veratrum album, but not because they 

are sad. Mostly it comes from the anger they 

feel when contradicted, and it is likely to be 

played out in many different temper tantrums.


In Veratrum album you will more often see 

jealousy combining with suicidal depression.


A terrible feeling of loss can also be 

experienced if the family moves away.

Dullness and confusion – the cold, 

collapsed and depleted segment.


It is a remedy that can go in and out of 

consciousness during meningitis, or fevers in 

which he is vomiting and has profuse diarrhea.


At the other extreme is the overactive, 

inattentive child or even hyperactive adult.


Confusion is one of the main ideas of Veratrum.


One way this confusion shows itself is not being 

able to make up their minds about what to do.


Veratrum album may become absent-minded.


Distractibility often takes its toll on the memory 

or ability to concentrate in the Veratrum child.


Restlessness makes concentration difficult.


Veratrum album is one of the remedies we use 

for autistic children or retarded children who 

cannot do their work or are exhausted and also 

very irritated by any kind of mental effort.


Copious evacuations; vomiting, purging, 

salivation, sweat, urine, with profound 

prostration; coldness; blueness; and collapse.


The effects in Veratrum are violent and sudden.


It is a great fainting remedy; faints from 

emotions; least exertion; slight injury, with 

hemorrhage; after stools and vomiting.


Cold perspiration on the forehead with all 

complaints is one of the strongest keynotes.


The breath and tongue can be as cold as ice.


Spasms or cramps; in chest; bowels; hands; 

fingers; toes; soles of feet; with diarrhea.

We find various shades of mental aberration in 

this remedy - all sorts of moods from the most 

lively gaiety to the profoundest melancholy.

Veratrum suits women in a certain form of 

puerperal insanity. They become extremely 

affectionate and exhibit great love for 

everybody. They kiss everybody they see.


From the affectionate nature they may merge 

into an amorous and extremely lascivious state.

Veratrum album will curse & complain, and tear 

and cut. Phenomena like these are very often 

caused by the suppression of the menses.


The patient combines the wildest vagaries of the 

religious enthusiast, the amorous frenzies of 

the nymphomaniac and the execrative passions 

of the infuriated demon, each of these 

struggling for ascendancy cause her to writhe 

and struggle with her mental and physical 

agonies; after the anguish she passes from this 

frenzy into one of deepest melancholy, abject 

despair of salvation, imbecile taciturnity and 

complete prostration of mind and body.


Veratrum has constant activity. This is not so 

much violence or aggressiveness, except in the 

most extreme state. It is a driven, ceaseless 

energy compelling the patient to be busy.


The Veratrum patient has a profound confusion 

about his identity. He thinks he is Christ or John 

the Baptist, or chosen to save the world.


The active state may alternate with a sad state - 

as in cases of manic depressive psychoses.


Some of the general characteristics of Veratrum 

are distinctive, and helpful in prescribing. 

Veratrum has great thirst for cold drinks, even 

for ice. It also desires fruit, especially acid fruit. 

There is a great desire for salt. And throughout 

the Veratrum state there is severe coldness.


The acute state of Veratrum shows the activity 

in exaggerated form once again, both mentally 

and physically. The excessive vomiting and 

diarrhea is very active, sudden and explosive.


In the muscles, there is much twitching like we 

see in the remedies - Hyoscyamus and Agaricus.


The Veratrum album patient has severe 

neuralgic pains which drives them to mania.


Veratrum album should be compared with other 

mania remedies such as Stramonium, 

Belladonna, Hyoscyamus and Tarentula.


The final test of fame is to have a crazy person imagine he is you.
