ANNIQUE DELPHINE
“... is an artist living and working in Berlin, Germany. Her work explores
themes of feminism, sexuality and female identity.”
Q: How do you define the sexiness of women? Is nudity necessarily
considered as erotic?
A: I think confidence is sexy. Believing in your own beauty
and most of all in your own strength. Women are strong
because femininity is viewed as something weak so women
automatically grow up having to fight: fight for respect, fight
for recognition, fight for equal rights. Nudity is not automatically
erotic but naked women are always sexualized. That’s
what I’m trying to change. I think nudity is natural and beautiful
and I want to normalize female nudity so we can get
away from the notion that a naked woman or any woman
showing any amount of skin is “asking for it”
Q: What are you trying to express through your work?
A: Right now I’m trying to express that our natural state
of nakedness should never be sexualized, and that People
shouldn’t be objectified, nor should they be judged for their
sexuality.
Q:Tell us a bit of your working process or any interesting experience?
A:The way I work is 100% intuitive. I don’t think about a
greater message i’m wanting to convey and then set out with
a plan. Instead I just let my feelings come out through my
creativity. So usually while I’m engulfed in a new project I
might not even yet know what it’s about because it’s different
feelings and inspirations coming together and then at some
point I take a step back and look at it, and then I see parallels
to something that’s going on in my life or in our society and
I see how my work is reflecting that. This is what happened
with my project ABUNDANCE for example. It started out as
a way for me to express all my own sadness and my feeling of
powerlessness in the face of a patriarchal society that judges
women for their sexuality and tries to control the way they
express it.
...women for their sexuality and tries to control the way they
express it. And you can take those pictures and films and
relate them to the current state of sexist politics in the US
where a bunch of men are deciding over women’s reproductive
rights. Or you can take them and relate them to rape culture
for instance. Because at the core of these photographs
lies my general frustration with sexist oppression.
Which is one of the key motivations for my work.
Another motivation is the way women’s bodies are objectified.
I’m pointing that out with different methods, one of
them being my Boobhead. It’s a giant Breast I wear on my
head to take selfies with. I want to show how women are
viewed as sex objects even when they aren’t doing anything
sexual. They could be doing dishes or yoga, or grocery shopping
and somehow if they are viewed as a sex object by
someone it is their own fault. And it really doesn’t matter
how much or how little skin they show. Objectification has
normalized it for people to sexualize women’s bodies. I want
to end that.
Q: Any messages you want to say to all the women in the
modern world?
A: Speak up! About anything that bothers you. Let your voices
be heard!
Believe in your own beauty! It is not something to be determined
by magazines, companies selling beauty products,
media or our peers. It’s something you’ve had all along and
it reveals itself to you the moment you stop looking for validation
from outside and start looking for it within yourself.
Q: Is there any exciting new project coming out?
A: My next solo show ‚Reclaim The Feminin‘ opens February
9 in Berlin. and during it I will be hosting a couple of workshops
on how to make your own Boobhead.
After that I will put my focus on my project ‚Girl Disruptive‘
to raise awareness about gender-based violence.
Q
A
A
A
A

Q
Tell us a bit of your working process or any interesting
experience?
Q
How do you define the sexiness of women?
A
Women’s sexual appeal is the root of the
energy I live for.
It is a big driving force to enrich my work
and life.
If I do not have a woman I think I can not
find the meaning to live.
I sincerely thank women.
A
There is always new discovery.
A woman has a world that I can not imagine as
a man.
Some people do not realize the world by themselves,
others are shy and do not put out on the
table.
I feel like it is my job to open up this world as
much as possible.
There is always a discovery in the world outside
my imagination, which will be a new picture for
me.
Q
What are you trying to express through your
work?
A
I value the feeling that women want to appear
more than I can express.
I know that women shine by erasing my egoism
as much as possible.
Q
Is there any model that impress you the
most and why?
A
I would rather work with a few specific
women for a long period of time rather than
working with lots of different women.
By working with someone for a long time,
we can be more relaxed with each other and
that can lead to better work. Recently the
women on Instagram are my main focus.
