<strong>The</strong> <strong>Contribution</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Functionalist</strong> <strong>Sociology</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>an</strong> Underst<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Role</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Society</strong> <strong>Functionalist</strong>s have constructed two questions <strong>to</strong> help <strong>the</strong>m<br />

research education. <strong>The</strong> first question is. "What are <strong>the</strong> functions <strong>of</strong> education for society as a whole?" <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> second question is. "What are <strong>the</strong> functional<br />

relationships between <strong>the</strong> education system <strong>an</strong>d o<strong>the</strong>r parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> social system". Firstly, Functionalism is a <strong>the</strong>ory. A <strong>the</strong>ory based on “value consensus”.<br />

Functionalism is based on <strong>the</strong> view that society is a system <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terdependent parts held <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r by a shared culture or value consensus (<strong>an</strong> agreement<br />

amongst society’s members about what values are import<strong>an</strong>t). <strong>Functionalist</strong> <strong>the</strong>ories assume <strong>the</strong> different parts <strong>of</strong> a society each have <strong>the</strong>ir own role <strong>to</strong> play<br />

(<strong>the</strong>ir own "function"), <strong>an</strong>d work <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r smoothly <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> form a harmonious whole (macro). <strong>The</strong> metaphor <strong>of</strong>ten used <strong>to</strong> describe functionalism is that it<br />

views society as a body, with <strong>the</strong> different socialisation agents —government, media, religion, <strong>the</strong> family, etc., <strong>an</strong>d, <strong>of</strong> course, education—be<strong>in</strong>g like <strong>the</strong><br />

different org<strong>an</strong>s <strong>in</strong> a body, each contribut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a different way <strong>to</strong> keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> entire body healthy. Emile Durkhiem writ<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> turn <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last century found<br />

that <strong>the</strong> major function <strong>of</strong> schools was <strong>the</strong> tr<strong>an</strong>smission <strong>of</strong> society's norms <strong>an</strong>d values. Durkhiem stated that without "essential similarities", co-operation <strong>an</strong>d<br />

social solidarity social life would be impossible, <strong>the</strong>re needs <strong>to</strong> be a "degree <strong>of</strong> homogeneity". Durkhiem stated that for a child "<strong>to</strong> become attached <strong>to</strong> society,<br />

<strong>the</strong> child must feel <strong>in</strong> someth<strong>in</strong>g which is real, alive <strong>an</strong>d powerful, which do... ...es that education's mayor role as <strong>the</strong> reproduction <strong>of</strong> labour power. <strong>The</strong>y agree<br />

that education tr<strong>an</strong>smits norms <strong>an</strong>d values but <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> workplace <strong>an</strong>d through <strong>the</strong> hidden curriculum. I agree <strong>an</strong>d disagree with both views. I agree that a school<br />

tr<strong>an</strong>smits society’s norms <strong>an</strong>d values but I also believe that family <strong>an</strong>d friends also help. I also reject <strong>the</strong> <strong>Functionalist</strong>s view that school is meri<strong>to</strong>cratic because<br />

not everyone has <strong>an</strong> equal ch<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d not everyone will achieve <strong>the</strong> same even if <strong>the</strong>y have <strong>the</strong> same ability. Children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rul<strong>in</strong>g class have greater<br />

ch<strong>an</strong>ces. Although Marxists have a better idea but need <strong>to</strong> take some ideas from Interactionists <strong>to</strong> get a clearer picture <strong>in</strong> my belief. Even though this each<br />

perspective has its flaws, we c<strong>an</strong> become clearer on <strong>the</strong> actual contribution <strong>of</strong> education <strong>in</strong> society as whole.<br />
