Inscribed on the flyleaf: ‘à Madame Ludmile de Sawwitzki, hommage respecteux de
Paul Eluard’. An early work, and the signature in his early hand - a year before his
‘butterfly’ signature was developed. The recipient is Ludmila Savitzky, translator into
French of - among others - work by Joyce (‘Dedalus’) and John Rodker (‘Dartmoor’,
‘Montagnes Russes’), with the latter subsequently marrying her daughter.

The author’s second book, and first novel - with Aragon
playing with the popular genre of crime fiction to create
a roman à clef that numbers Breton, Picasso, and others
from the author’s circle of friends amongst its cast. The
author himself was the basis for the protagonist, with the
city of Paris given a lead role.
