Fast and Accurate | Coady

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 4 OF 10 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • MARCH 26, 2017
Fast and Accurate continued his upward progression with a 24-
1 shocker here. Off the mark in a $30,000 tagger going a mile
here Dec. 4, the grey made it two on the bounce with a wire-towire
score in the Sage of Monticello S. over the Gulfstream grass
Feb. 2. Not given much support at the windows to make it three
in a row in this GI Kentucky Derby prep, the Mike Maker trainee
stayed near the front in third while saving ground as stablemate
En Hanse (Hansen) showed the way through a half-mile in
:46.36. Shifted to the outside and edging nearer on the final
bend, Fast and Accurate seized command turning into the lane
and held firm to the wire, fending off the late rush of fellow
longshot Blueridge Traveler.
Fast and Accurate is not nominated to the Triple Crown, but
owner Dr. Kendall Hansen, who also campaigned the winner=s
sire, indicated his intention to pay the $200,000 supplement for
late nomination. Fast and Accurate earned 50 points toward the
Derby in the Spiral.
AWe had so many [Hansen foals] that we were just trying to fill
in the blanks,@ Maker said. AWe had a lot of confidence [coming
in to the Spiral].@
Pedigree Notes:
Fast and Accurate becomes the third stakes winner and first
graded for 2011 champion 2-year-old colt Hansen, now standing
in South Korea. It=s Heidi=s Dance, a maiden of four career starts
and $8,000 2005 KEENOV purchase by Halvorson Bloodstock,
has also produced a 2-year-old colt by Liaison and was most
recently bred to Conveyance. It=s Heidi=s Dance is a half-sister to
graded winners Bwana Charlie (Indian Charlie), Bwana Bull (Holy
Purely a Dream | Coady

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 6 OF 10 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • MARCH 26, 2017
Purely a Dream, a narrow grassy maiden winner at Keeneland
two back Oct. 28, was making her stakes debut following a wellbeaten
eighth-place finish in a Churchill optional claimer over
the main track Nov. 26.
Hung out wide in post 10 here, she raced in between horses
while at least three wide behind a solid early tempo and began
to move after the dueling leaders three off the fence after a half
in :46.47. Making a sweeping move on the far turn, Purely a
Dream was in control through three-quarters in 1:10.93 and
distanced herself turning into the lane to win for fun. Awesome
Boss completed the Ken McPeek-trained exacta.
The win gives Purely a Dream 50 points toward a place in the
GI Kentucky Oaks starting gate.
AShe was a little hot in the post parade, which was a concern--
she had been off a while,@ winning jockey Robby Albarado said.
AShe galloped along the first turn, squeezed into contention and
then made the lead. I just kept on going at that point. She held
off some nice fillies. It=s funny how she was foaled on this same
day, the 25th [of March 2014].@
Pedigree Notes:
Yorksters Girl (Ire), stakes-placed in Britain, was an 18,000gns
TATDEC purchase as a horse of racing age for Purely a Dream=s
breeder James Bredin in 2009. She is also represented by the 2-
year-old filly Dragoness (Street Boss) and a 2017 First Samurai
filly. McPeek has enjoyed plenty of success with offspring by
Purely a Dream=s sire Pure Prize, led by GI Hollywood Starlet S.
Darley Alcibiades S. runner-up Dothraki Queen (Pure Prize).

The consistent Itsinthepost (Fr) scored the biggest victory of
The ultra-consistent Fear the Cowboy earned the first graded
stakes tally of his career and his trainer=s Efren Loza, Jr. with a
come-from-behind victory in Saturday=s GIII Skip Away S. The
bay, on the board in 12 of his previous 19 outings, was
unhurried early and settled near the back of the pack as Flashy
Jewel set the pace. As the field began to tighten up after a half
in :48.02, favored Zulu moved to challenge the pacesetter along
the rail, but Flashy Jewel repelled that threat and opened up a
clear lead leaving the backstretch. The gray leader began to tire
turning for home and Fear the Cowboy was gearing up for his
rally while three wide at the top of the lane. He inhaled the
pacesetter and strode clear to an authoritative victory. AHe runs
every time and runs so hard,@ Loza said. AHe runs one mile, one
mile and a sixteenth, one mile and an eighth. He is a horse I ship
to different racetracks and he always does good. He has heart.@
Fear the Cowboy opened 2017 with an easy optional claimer win
behind Iron Fist (Tapit) in the Feb. 25 Maxxam Gold Cup.
Following a one-year hiatus owing to an untimely outbreak of
While Baffert is likely to be jetting back to the states after
saddling Juddmonte Farms= Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song) in
Saturday=s G1 Dubai World Cup, that operation=s Bronze Age
(Mineshaft) looks a strong chance in Sunday=s race. Though he
was beaten a combined 23 1/4 lengths in a pair of tries around
one turn to begin his career, the $75,000 KEESEP yearling turned
$600,000 FTFMAR 2-year-old made the most of his first try
around two turns to take a one-mile test by 1 1/2 lengths Feb.
18. The form of that heat looks strong, as both the second and
third home returned to win their next starts.
Cinderella story Conquest Mo Money (Uncle Mo) looks to run
his winning streak to four, though he was done no favors by
drawing widest of them all. Winner on debut over a mile in
11 lengths in early February and exits a pillar-to-post success
adds blinkers for trainer Doug O=Neill

after pressing the pace. The runner-up that day was none other
than Sonneteer, Sherack=s new favorite horse and the Rebel
runner-up. I suppose distance is a bit of a question mark just on
form, but his sire was a GSW at 1 1/2 miles and his dam just
missed in a Grade III going this distance. Selection: #7 Kimbear
(15-1).
Sherack: Saturday - Fawree (7th at 6-1 UAE Derby); Soglio (7th
at 6-1 Spiral). Bankroll: $4390.
Ed DeRosa of TwinSpires.com takes on TDN's Steve Sherack and
Brian DiDonato as they handicap each prep race leading up to
the GI Kentucky Derby. The three will make $100 Win/Place
bets--highest bankroll after the Lexington S. wins.
DeRosa: Saturday - Fawree (7th at 6-1 UAE Derby); Kitten=s Cat
(4th at 5-2 Spiral). Bankroll: $2480.
GIII Sunland Derby - The Sunland Derby is the final 85-point race
of the Kentucky Derby Champion Series with 50 points to the
winner, and I=m taking a chance on a colt who lost his first five
races before putting it together last out for a 4 1/2-length score
at Santa Anita: Kimbear. This Temple City colt tried routing on
the turf and ran some OK races to start his career. Then he was
wide in dirt debut behind Iliad before trying turf sprinting and
then finally getting the win going seven furlongs on dirt. My
biggest concern isn=t the class hike but the jump to 1 1/8 miles,
but the 15-1 morning line gives me confidence that we=ll be
compensated for that gamble. Trainer Eric Kruljac wins with 18%
shippers, and jockey Joe Talamo stays aboard. He and Bronze
Age are the two most exciting horses in the race because a
move forward off their last actually puts them in the Derby
picture. My trepidation with Bronze Age as the favorite is I don=t
love horses who Aneed@ two turns to break their maiden--
especially after a couple poor efforts. I=ll let him beat me as the
favorite. Selection: #7 Kimbear (15-1).
DiDonato: Saturday - Fawree (7th at 6-1 UAE Derby); Parlor
(8th at 4-1 Spiral). Bankroll: $1330.
GIII Sunland Derby - They put together an interesting little
diverse group for this race--nice to see after it was cancelled last
year. Kimbear is just coming off a maiden win in his sixth effort,
but it looks like he=s finally established that he=s best on dirt and
has a right to continue his upward trajectory here. Second to
San Vicente winner/San Felipe runner-up Iliad sprinting at Los Al
in December, he returned to the main track at Santa Anita last
month and turned in a dominating effort going seven panels
GIII Sunland Derby - Don=t think he=ll be anywhere near his
morning-line quote of 15-1, but even half that price is fine with
me on Kimbear. I=m obviously partial to Sonneteer=s form and
this guy enters off a very impressive win over the longshot Rebel
runner-up in a seven-furlong maiden race at Santa Anita in late
February. Kimbear=s only other dirt race was pretty solid as well,
finishing second behind the talented Iliad three starts back at
Los Al. Price should be worth it to see if he can stay the distance.
Selection: #7 Kimbear (15-1).
FLORIDA DERBY HOPEFULS TUNE UP
Gunnevera | Leslie Martin
A bevy of contenders for the Apr. 1 GI Xpressbet.com Florida
Derby tuned up Saturday from Gulfstream Park, Gulfstream
West and Palm Meadows. Leading the way, GII Xpressbet.com
Fountain of Youth S. winner Gunnevera (Dialed In) went five
furlongs at Gulfstream Park West in 1:01.80 (video) and
Fountain of Youth third-place finisher Three Rules (Gone Astray)
covered the same distance in a bullet 1:00.50 (video) at
Gulfstream Park.
Jockey Leonel Reyes replaced regular exercise partner Edgard
Zayas, who was in Dubai riding Sharp Azteca in the G2
Godolphin Mile, for Gunnevera=s work.
AIt was very good for me,@ trainer Antonio Sano said of the
drill, which was seventh fastest of 20 at the distance Saturday.
AThe jockey did exactly as I asked him and it went perfectly. He
was very calm on my horse. The last two furlongs, I got him in
:10 4/5 and the gallop out was very good.@
Sano said he caught Gunnevera galloping out six furlongs in
1:14. Last Saturday, Gunnevera worked five furlongs in 1:04.40.
ALast week the horse worked very slow,@ Sano explained. AHe
is ready for the race. He didn=t need more for the Florida Derby,
so I breezed him looking ahead to the next one.@
Three Rules=s drill was the fastest of 24 at the distance over a
the Hallandale oval which received overnight rains.
AIt put a little moisture in the track and that=s really good for
him. He=s fit and ready,@ trainer Jose Pinchin said. AHe went
five-eighths this morning and galloped out good. Everything
went perfectly. It couldn=t have been a better work.@
Three Rules set a pressured pace before tiring to third in the
Fountain of Youth. Looking back on the race, Pinchin admitted
he was impressed with his charge=s effort.
AIt was a hell of a good performance,@ Pinchin said. AHe got
pressured from the go by Irish War Cry (Curlin) and then
[Practical Joke] took him on real early and didn=t really give him
a chance, but he ran real good. I thought it was a very good
race.@
Fountain of Youth runner-up Practical Joke (Into Mischief),
who was making his first start in four months in that Mar. 5
race, is considered probable for the Florida Derby after working
five furlongs in 1:00.90 (video) in company with graded stakes
winner Shagaf (Bernardini) at Palm Meadows.
AI want to speak to the owners and come up with a final
decisionYweigh our options,@ explained trainer Chad Brown.
AIt=s probable I will run [in the Florida Derby], but it=s not certain.
We=ll see how the horse comes out of his work. The other idea is
maybe running in the [Apr. 8 GII Toyota] Blue Grass.@
Also working at Gulfstream Saturday for the Florida Derby,
Impressive Edge (Harlan=s Holiday) went five furlongs in 1:01.87
(video). The N and K Racing colorbearer, fourth in the GIII Swale
S., is coming off an eight-length allowance victory going seven
furlongs at Gulfstream Mar. 5. He completed his drill shortly
after stablemate and GIII Gotham S. winner and >TDN Rising
Star= J Boys Echo (Mineshaft)=s five-furlong workout in 1:02.89
under Tammy Fox.
AThey both worked good,@ commented trainer Dale Romans.
AThey=re totally different horses--one worked fast, the other
worked slow. But we know they can both run and they=re both
fit and ready to roll.@
J Boys Echo is expected to run next in Keeneland=s Blue Grass
S.
Others working towards the Florida Derby at Palm Meadows
Saturday were: GII Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby runnerup
State of Honor (To Honor and Serve) who went four furlongs
in :48.30 (video); Talk Logistics (High Cotton), fourth in the
Fountain of Youth, worked five furlongs in 1:01.25; and
Unbridled Holiday (Harlan=s Holiday) covered four furlongs in
:48.00 (video) in advance of his graded stakes debut.
maiden winner for a $30,000 tag sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs here
Dec. 10, he came back to win an optional claimer over that same
SUPERSTAR ARROGATE
Arrogate wins the Dubai World Cup | DRC/Neville Hopwood
By Kelsey Riley
Ride him like Zenyatta. That was the plan jockey Mike Smith
turned to when >TDN Rising Star= Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song),
the overwhelming international favourite for Saturday=s
G1 Dubai World Cup, found himself last going past the stands
the first time in the $10-million race. Not only was the grey
slowly away from the starting gates, but he was squeezed by
rivals soon after exiting and found himself trailing in the opening
stages of the 1 1/4-mile event, far away from his customary
position on or near the lead.
AI honestly told myself--you know I rode the great mare
Zenyatta--and when I got away so bad, I thought, >you know
what buddy, you can do it just like she did,=@ Smith said. She
used to run from back there and I know he can do anything.@
Arrogate justified his rider=s confidence as Smith kept his cool,
prompting his mount to gradually make up ground on the
outside as last-out G1 Al Maktoum Challenge R3 winner Long
River (A.P. Indy) led the field down the backstretch with Gun
Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) and Neolithic (Harlan=s Holiday) on
his heels. Arrogate began to loop rivals in the three path
rounding the bend under a vigorous ride from Smith, and
straightened with just his two compatriots to catch. Roaring
down the middle of the course as Gun Runner led Neolithic by a
length, Arrogate swept past Gun Runner with ease passing the
200-metre mark, with Smith able to gear down thereafter as
Arrogate drew clear to win by 2 1/4 easy lengths. Cont. p2
ARROGATE VS. PHAROAH? IT=S ARROGATE
By Bill Finley
It=s one of those arguments that can=t be answered with
concrete answers, only guesses and speculation. Nonetheless,
when you have two once-in-a-lifetime type horses actually come
along in successive years, both of them trained by the same
person, it=s an irresistible debate. Who is the superior horse,
American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) or Arrogate (Unbridled=s
Song)?
Since the GI Breeders= Cup Classic, I thought the answer was
Arrogate, but to say or write so seemed like blasphemy.
Arrogate didn=t even race in the Triple Crown. Pharoah not only
won it, he broke a 37-year dry spell, accomplishing the most
important feat there is in the sportBa feat that was beginning to
seem impossible. Triple Crown winners belong in a pantheon,
and it=s a small group of 12 that doesn=t welcome many
outsiders.
The who-is-the-better horse question can only truly be
answered on the racetrack. Barring that, you can go to speed
figures. On the Beyer numbers, Arrogate is better. American
Pharoah ran a 105 in the GI Kentucky Derby, a 102 in the
GI Preakness S., a 105 in the GI Belmont S. and a 109 in the
GI Haskell Invitational S. He did not reach the upper
stratosphere of the Beyer scale until his Classic win, in which he
ran a 120. Since he came of age in the GI Travers S., Arrogate
has run a 122 in his win in Saratoga, a 120 in his Classic win and
a 119 in the GI Pegasus World Cup. He=s the faster horse.
Then there are earnings. $17 million for Arrogate. $8.6 million
for Pharoah. But subtract the bounty from the Pegasus World
Cup, a race that did not exist when American Pharoah was
racing, and the difference is not that noticeable. It=s not a fair
way to compare the two.
I am ignoring earnings and giving only slight credence to speed
figures. I am basing my vote on what Arrogate showed Saturday,
the ability to win the G1 Dubai World Cup despite tremendous
adversity. Cont. p5
Smith put Arrogate=s slow start down to a misunderstanding
with the assistant starter.
AI don=t know if the guy misunderstood me, but I said, >make
sure you keep his head straight,=@ he
explained. AAnd then he got out instead. My
horse just didn=t realise he had to break. But
you know what? Things happen for a reason.@
The rider said Arrogate didn=t immediately
take to the track, either, which has been
pelted by unprecedented amounts of rain this
week and was sealed earlier in the day.
“This is the greatest
horse we have seen since
Secretariat.
Unbelievable.”
-Bob Baffert on Arrogate
"He was slipping and sliding from the word go,@ Smith said.
AOnce I got to the outside and he was straightened out, he
leveled out. And I made up five lengths so quick, I thought OK,
we are here. And now I just tried to be patient and not lose
ground and let everybody work their way in, so that I didn't have
to check out too wide and it worked out great.@
A[Trainer] Bob [Baffert] had a heart attack when he was here
last time [in 2012] and I think I had one too,@ Smith said. AI had
to get it pumping again after we got out. I'm just so blessed, God
has blessed me so much, to give me a horse like this towards the
end of my career is just, I'm lost for words, I am going to break
down and cry. He is the best I have ever been on, he truly is. He
is the world's horse now."
Baffert, who was winning his third World Cup in addition to
Silver Charm in 1998 and Captain Steve in 2001 and also trained
the 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof the
Nile), was similarly emotional, describing the
Juddmonte Farms colourbearer as Athe
greatest horse we have seen since
Secretariat.@
"When I was watching it, I thought >I hope
Mike takes care of him=, maybe I shouldn't
have come here,@ the trainer said.
Connections of Khalid Abdullah, flying the Saudi flag, can=t resist a
selfie with Arrogate | racingfotos.com
With the win, Arrogate becomes the richest-ever North
American-trained Thoroughbred, the $6-million winner=s share
of the purse pushing his bankroll to $17,084,600, past that of his
old adversary and last year=s Dubai World Cup winner California
Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) with $14,752,650. With targets like a
repeat in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic in his sights later this year,
the win also puts Arrogate in striking range of Japanese Triple
Crown winner Orfevre (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn})=s worldwide record
of $19,005,276.
It was the first win in the Dubai World Cup for Saudi Arabian
Prince Khalid Abdullah=s Juddmonte Farms, whose story with
Arrogate began at the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale.
Following the death of trainer Bobby Frankel--the namesake of
Juddmonte=s unbeaten European champion Frankel (GB)
(Galileo {Ire})--in 2009, Juddmonte had been without a strong
presence on the Southern California racing circuit in the U.S. for
a few years, and thus hired Baffert and his advisors to help its
team pick out a handful of colts with stallion credentials at
auction. One of those was Arrogate, who they scooped up for
$560,000. Cont. p4

Dubai World Cup cont.
Unraced at two, Arrogate was beaten three-quarters of a
length on debut when third last April, but made amends six
weeks later when romping by 4 1/2 lengths in a Santa Anita
maiden, earning >TDN Rising Star= status. Arrogate ran through is
allowance conditions last summer in California before shipping
to Saratoga for his stakes debut in the GI Travers S. Well
regarded beforehand, he elevated himself to superstar status in
the Travers, coming home 13 1/2 lengths the best in trackrecord
time.
The stage was set for a showdown with the older veteran,
former GI Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year
California Chrome in the GI Breeders= Cup Classic. Arrogate was
brilliant, of course, but did he have the necessary foundation to
take down such a seasoned star? Arrogate answered that with
an empathic yes, getting California Chrome=s measure by a halflength.
Arrogate was named Eclipse champion 3-year-old in late
January, and a week later justified that honour further with a
4 3/4-length score in the $12-million GI Pegasus World Cup,
which this year replaced the Dubai World Cup as the world=s
richest race.
Gun Runner, who was third behind Arrogate in the Travers,
found himself once again watching the grey=s tail on Saturday
after running a big race from the front end.
Jockey Florent Geroux said, AIt took him a little while to get
position early on. Long River came out running hard from my
inside and it took my horse two or three more strides to get
position. Once he did and was comfortable on the turn, it was
exactly where I wanted to be. If someone wanted to go faster, I
could let them go, but I was comfortable. On the last turn, Long
River started to back out and we took the lead and my horse
was going really easily. He started flicking his ears back and forth
and was cruising. I waited as long as I could--almost until the
eighth-pole--but Arrogate went by me. Gun Runner was trying
and was fighting with him all the way to the end. He's still
getting better and before I wasn't sure about the 2000 metres,
but now as he's improving I think it's fine.@
Likewise, Neolithic was third behind Arrogate in the Pegasus,
and rider John Velazquez said, AI was very happy with his run. He
ran right up to his best. We were beaten by two better horses,
and the winner--my God he is out of this world.@
Mubtaahij (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), winner of the G2 UAE Derby
two years ago and second in this race last year, wound up
fourth, and jockey Christophe Soumillon said, AIf he had one
more run under his belt maybe he could have been third, but
he=s a nice horse and gives everything.@
Arrogate has the upper hand over American Pharoah, says Bill Finley
DRC/Mathea Kelley
Bill Finley cont. from p1
That=s something that, at this level, only the greatest among
the greats can do. As wonderful a horse as he was, when faced
with the only real difficult situation he faced in his career,
American Pharoah, by contrast, came up short in the Travers.
The heart and the ability to overcome adversity, that=s what
separates the two.
After his inexplicable clunker in his career debut, Pharoah
breezed through the Arkansas preps, the Triple Crown races and
the Haskell. It=s not that he always had dream trips, but never
did he face anything serious enough that he had a legitimate
excuse had he been beaten. The Travers was different. Frosted
(Tapit) looked him in the eye down the backstretch and, even
though the pace was not that fast, it was more than he could
handle. He was worn down in the stretch, losing to Keen Ice
(Curlin). That is, by the way, the same Keen Ice that has been
beaten double digit lengths in all three of his starts against
Arrogate, including in the Dubai World Cup. He=s now lost to
Arrogate by a combined 33 1/2 lengths.
Compare that to what happened to Arrogate yesterday. He
was body slammed at the start and wound up last. It cost him
four or five lengths and took him out of his comfort zone, which
is to stalk the pace.
Smith never panicked. He didn=t rush his horse, Rather, he
methodically picked off horses, but that meant that he had to
stay on the outside and he had to get past a very good horse in
Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}).
"I thought then, 'If he wins this race, he's the most incredible
horse I've ever seen,'" Baffert said, perhaps so caught up in the
moment that he forget that trainers are not supposed to say
anything that can be construed as a comparison between top
horses owned by different interests.
According to Trakus, Arrogate traveled 13 metres (42 feet)
more than Gun Runner did, but that hardly mattered. He won
comfortably, by 2 1/4 lengths, and was not under anything even
remotely resembling a stiff drive.
As Arrogate crossed the wire, Meydan announcer Terry Spargo
dared to mention Arrogate in the same breathe as Man o=War.
Cont. p6

Bill Finley cont.
AHave we seen the anointing of the Man o=War of the 21st
century?@ Spargo asked.
That may be a stretch. Then again, maybe not. And is it a
coincidence that Arrogate did what he did just four days shy of
Man o=War=s 100th birthday?
Arrogate will soon be on his way back to Baffert=s base at
Santa Anita. After winning, in succession, a $5-million, $12-
million and $10-million race, he really doesn=t have anything
else to prove, and it would almost seem like he were slumming
if he would show up in a mere $1-million race. The
Baffert/Juddmonte team has been very careful about picking its
spots for Arrogate and doesn=t do so until it has carefully
weighed all options. My guess is that we don=t see him again
until a prep for the Classic, either in the GI Pacific Classic or the
GI Awesome Again S. Then he=ll try to repeat the Classic--
Pegasus World Cup daily double before being sent off to stud.
So, most likely, we won=t get to see too much more of him, but
what a treat it will be to see him when he returns to the
racetracks of the U.S. Whenever or wherever that may happen
to be, the sport will be, with apologies to American Pharoah,
treated to an appearance by nothing less than the greatest
horse of modern times.
HOBBS TOO GOOD IN SHEEMA CLASSIC
A fascinating early-season clash of some of the world=s best
middle-distance turf horses saw a wonderful training
performance from John Gosden to produce Jack Hobbs (GB)
(Halling) in peak form to run out a ready winner of Saturday=s G1
Longines Dubai Sheema Classic. The strapping colt deserves
extra credit as he ran quite free in William Buick=s hands for
much of the early stages as Highland Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}),
racing well off the inside, adopted his customary front-running
role that has served him so well in the past. He was never able
to break away from the field, however, as Andrea Atzeni was
keen to keep tabs on the leader on the race favourite
Postponed (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). As the field turned for home,
Highland Reel began to backpedal and Postponed came under a
strong drive as Jack Hobbs powered on and nothing was going to
trouble the 5-year-old as he won pushed out by 2 1/4 lengths
with Seventh Heaven (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) emerging from the
pack to chase him down. Postponed was disappointing in third,
just about managing to turnaround the G2 Dubai City Of Gold
form with Prize Money (GB) (Authorized {Ire}) who finished
fourth.
Having broken his maiden very late in his juvenile year at
Wolverhampton in December of 2014, Jack Hobbs announced
himself as a G1 Derby contender in the spring of 2015 when
runner up to then stablemate and subsequent Epsom hero
Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) in the G2 Dante S. at York.
He then finished runner-up at Epsom before making amends in
the G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh later that
month. He came through an easy Group 3 trial at Kempton in
September after a mid-season break before finishing third to
Fascinating Rock (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) in the G1 QIPCO
Champion S. Last year was a bit of a writeoff for Jack Hobbs as a
pelvic injury suffered at Newmarket in April kept him off the
track until another solid third-place finish, this time behind
Almanzor (Fr) (Wotton Bassett {GB}), in the G1 Champion S.
again at Ascot. With his problems seemingly behind him the
winner clearly relished the underfoot ease and looks set to take
a high rank in the major middle-distance contests throughout
the season.
Trainer John Gosden has a pat for Jack Hobbs | racingfotos.com
Pedigree Notes...
Jack Hobbs was bred by Willie Carson=s Minster Stud out of the
three-time winner Swain=s Gold (Ire) (Swain {Ire}) who has also
bred the GSP Niceofyoutotellme (GB) (Hernando {Fr}) among
four winners in total from five produce to race. Golden Pond
(Ire) (Don=t Forget Me {Ire}), the granddam of Jack Hobbs was a
high-class runner herself, scoring seven times including in the
GII Orchid H. She also bequeathed a degree of her racing ability
to her stakes-winning daughter Brazilian (Stravinsky), who in
turn foaled the stakes winner La Malaguena (English Channel).
VIVLOS LANDS MAGIC TOUCH FOR JAPAN
They call him the Magic Man, and jockey Joao Moreira
conjured up yet another phenomenal result in the G1 Dubai
Turf, weaving his willing accomplice Vivlos (Jpn) (Deep Impact
{Jpn}) from a seemingly impossible position to fly home for a
stunning victory.
Barely even mentioned in dispatches as the Godolphin duo of
Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}) and Very Special (Ire) (Lope De
Vega {Ire}) towed the field along through the early stages, the
eventual winner was shuffled towards the rear of the field,
trapped hard on the rail with just two horses behind her.
As Mutakayyef (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) moved up to challenge
Ribchester, with Very Special and Zarak (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire})
starting to come under pressure, it was the French raider
Heshem (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) who appeared to
present the biggest danger to the leader as he switched off the
rail to make a charge down the centre of the track. Vivlos still
had plenty of ground to make up but a nimble switch of
direction, with Moreira threading the filly away from the rail and
behind a wall of runners to find room out wide, allowed her to
deliver a devastating late charge to overpower Heshem in the
final 50 metres.
An animated Moreira was clearly impressed with the
4-year-old he=d only first become acquainted with 24 hours
earlier. AShe was brilliant,@ he exclaimed. AFrom the time that I
first sat on her on Friday she already gave me a feel that she was
going to be very competitive. She was probably one of the
lightest horses in the race so if the ground was soft as people
think it is, she wasn=t sinking the most, so I think that=s why she
was able to let down, get strong and be able to get there.@
Deflecting praise from what was arguably the ride of the night,
he added, AGood horses make jockeys= lives easier and she
actually made the job very easy for me today. She traveled
nicely and she was comfortable when I got her out in the
daylight. She was just so strong to the line and got it done.
Congratulations to the owner, the trainer and thanks again to all
those connections who got me on top of her today.@
Winner of the G1 Shuka Sho over 2000 metres in Tokyo last
October, Vivlos was the first runner in Dubai for trainer Yasuo
Tomomichi, who appeared rather overcome by the success of
his outsider.
Speaking through an interpreter, he said, AShe traveled very
well from Japan and when she got to Dubai she was very
relaxed. She was great today, very settled and relaxed the whole
time, so she was in good form. There was a time when it looked
like she had got into a difficult position in the field but when she
started moving forward, it was obvious she was going to get
there. I=m not sure how to react, it=s all just a bit of a blank at
the moment.@
Vivlos became the third Japanese-trained winner in the last
four runnings of the Dubai Turf, following the victory of Just A
Way (Jpn) (Heart=s Cry {Jpn}) in 2014 and Real Steel (Jpn) (Deep
Impact {Jpn}) last year.
Al Shaqab Racing=s Heshem added to a memorable night for
France when taking second, with Christophe Ferland another
trainer enjoying his first Dubai World Cup night runner, while
Ribchester clung on gamely for third.
Vivlos and Joao Moreira | racingfotos.com
Pedigree Notes...
Last year=s winner Real Steel may have been ruled out of a
repeat run in the race earlier in the week, but it was still a
victory for Deep Impact. In fact, the Japanese super-sire has had
a particularly strong influence with the immediate family of
Vivlos, whose full-sister Verxina (Jpn) is a dual winner of the
G1 Victoria Mile and was runner-up in the GI Japanese Oaks.
Their dam, the five-time winner Halwa Sweet (Jpn), is a
Machiavellian half-sister to a pair of Group 3 winners both by
Deep Impact in Martinborough (Jpn) and Frere Jacques (Jpn),
and is a great grand-daughter of Glorious Song (Halo), the dam
of Rahy (Blushing Groom) and Singspiel (Ire) (In the Wings {GB}).
Halwa Sweet has also produced Cheval Grand (Jpn) (Heart=s Cry
{Jpn}), a Group 2 winner in both Japan and Argentina, and the
multiple winners Falster (Jpn) (Dance In The Dark {Jpn}) and
Rangiroa (Jpn) (Agnes Tachyon {Jpn}). Winning owner Kaszuhiro
Sasaki pitched for Major League Baseball=s Seattle Mariners
from 2000-2003, compiling 129 saves over that time.
BISCUITS ROLLS IN GOLDEN SHAHEEN
The American form looked strong going into Saturday=s
My Catch (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) took them along early and
carried the field until the turn in where the strong traveling St
Joe Bay (St Anddan) moved up menacingly to challenge. As soon
as he hit the front he was challenged and headed by those that
filled the minor placings, while Mind Your Biscuits was building
up great momentum as he swooped down the centre of the
track. That withering run soon took him past rivals to give his
trainer Chad Summers a first-ever winner. Summers was
naturally ecstatic and commented, "He went a little bit wider
than we thought, but at this point I don't mind if he was
touching the turf course. I am so thrilled for my team but this is
Jockey Joel Rosario rode the winner with a lot of confidence
and one senses he knew he was on the best horse in the race. "I
Mind Your Biscuits and Joel Rosario | Racingfotos.com
>Being here= represents a plan hatched by Summers, who coowns
Mind Your Biscuits along with his father, brother and other
partners, and who took over the training of the horse from
Robert Falcone Jr. in the New Year. This was the plan for the colt
since his victory over G2 Godolphin Mile third Sharp Azteca
(Freud) in the GI Malibu S. at Santa Anita in December. That race
served as the culmination to a fine 2016 for the horse after a
victory in the GII Amsterdam S. at Saratoga in July and second
placing in the GI Breeders= Cup Sprint in November. He
reappeared in 2017 with a pleasing effort when second in the
GIII Gulfstream Park Sprint S., which seemed to leave him spoton
for this high-profile assignment.
Pedigree Notes...
Posse (Silver Deputy) didn=t win a Grade I but that hasn=t held
him back as a sire, and he is already responsible for a dual
No horse had ever won the Al Quoz from a draw lower than
between rivals with about a sixteenth of a mile to travel, The
head first as Long On Value came with a sustained rally from the
tail of the field.
absolutely amazing. We=re very proud of the horse. When he
finished third here, we were very happy with that result and
even happier that he=s won here tonight. Twenty years ago I
>THUNDER= BRAVE IN EPIC DERBY DUEL
A tremendous duel between two high-class colts saw Thunder
Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) just edge out Epicharis (Jpn) (Gold
Allure {Jpn}) to win Saturday=s G2 UAE Derby. The two horses
had the race to themselves from early in the straight and as they
scrapped it out, Thunder Snow appeared to jink away from
Epicharis. It later transpired he spooked at some track markings
and that gave the initiative to the Japanese runner who looked
like emulating his compatriot Lani (Tapit), who won the race last
year. However, Christophe Soumillon galvanised another effort
from his gallant partner to just get his head in front where it
mattered and win by a nose. Todd Pletcher=s Master Plan
(Twirling Candy) finished his race out well closing all the way to
the line to finish third. Thunder Snow was recently nominated
for the American Triple Crown and his trainer Saeed Bin Suroor
commented, "The horse is a champion. He was a Group 1
winner in France and the jockey gave him a really good ride. We
will make a decision later on whether he will go for the Kentucky
This has to go down as a high-class display from Thunder
Snow, who was drawn out quite wide in stall 10. He showed
ample early speed to allow his jockey to slot into a prominent
position on the heels of the leaders as the two Japanese raiders
cut out the early running. As the only Group 1 winner in the
field, he probably deserved to be a shorter favourite than he
was, as not only was he a top-class juvenile last season but he
had also proved he had trained on into a proper 3-year-old. His
five length defeat of South Seas (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) in the
G1 Criterium International at Saint Cloud last October was
backed up by an impressive reappearance when, tackling dirt for
the first time, he romped home in the G3 UAE 2000 Guineas on
Feb. 11. Again displaying his versatility on Saturday, he opened
up a potential GI Kentucky Derby bid, something his owner
Sheikh Mohammed did not dismiss after the race. Cont. p12

"A very good option, yes," said Sheikh Mohammed when
asked about Churchill Downs in May. Christophe Soumillon was
riding a quick double after his win on Vazirabad (Fr) (Manduro
from home he said, AI was trying to get him concentrated but at
the 200 metre mark he saw the marks on the ground from the
gates and he got scared about it, changed legs and he hung. I
tried to keep concentrating because I knew it was not finished.
He wants to make it hard for me, but I just keep it going. He
sire Helmet (Aus) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) last year and he
should help keep the stallion=s name in the headlines
throughout 2017. His dam Eastern Angel (GB) (Dubai
four runners from five foals--all stakes winners. The other three,
all fillies, also include the G2 May Hill S. and G1 1000 Guineas
placegetter Ihtimal (Ire) (Shamardal); Hambleton S. winner and
G1 Sun Chariot S. runner up Always Smile (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire})
>SUMMER= SALUTES IN GODOLPHIN MILE
Second Summer (Summer Bird) added the $1-million
G2 Godolphin Mile sponsored by Meydan Sobha to his haul in
the Dubai World Cup opener on Saturday. In the process, the
gelding gave his trainer Doug Watson consecutive Mile tallies,
after One Man Band (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) led home a Watsontrained
trifecta in 2016. The rallying Ross (Ire) (Acclamation
{GB}) was a neck back in second, while in between them was
favoured Sharp Azteca (Freud), another 3/4 lengths back in
third.
AI didn=t quite expect this to happen,@ said Watson. AI didn=t
know if he could act on this ground. We have never had a sealed
track over here. He came home nicely.@
At the tail of the field snug against the fence as North America
ground through the early going and began to pick off rivals at
the half-way mark with a dream run up the inside. Sharp Azteca
took over leadership duties shortly thereafter and opened up
three lengths on his rivals with 400 metres remaining. Splitting
horses in midstretch, Second Summer shifted back to the inside
and collared a weary Sharp Azteca a few jumps from the wire,
DOUBLE GOLD FOR VAZIRABAD
Defending G2 Dubai Gold Cup hero Vazirabad (Fr) (Manduro
{Ger}) justified his position as pre-race favourite by claiming his
second victory in the race, but not without first giving his
connections and supporters some agonising moments of
concern. Calm and relaxed as he strolled around the pre-parade
ring, the 5-year-old became fractious in the gates as he waited
for his rivals to load, rearing several times before fluffing the
start and jumping slowly into stride. Though this was not plan A
for jockey Christophe Soumillon, his mount=s antics ultimately
worked in his favour as horses who sat behind the strong early
pace set by customary front-runner Big Orange (GB) (Duke Of
Marmalade {Ire}) started to drop away at the business end of
the race. From those in the vanguard early on, Godolphin=s
Beautiful Romance (GB) (New Approach {Ire}) saw out the
marathon contest best of all, and for much of the straight looked
to have the race at her mercy as Soumillon allowed his mount
gradually to pick up the pace. Stalking his prey ever more
menacingly as the line approached, Vazirabad=s potent finishing
kick eventually proved too much for the mare, who capitulated
only by a neck, with the Sheikhzayedroad (GB) (Dubawi {Ire})
running on past the tiring Big Orange to claim third.
AToday he was a bit nervous in the gates. He was sitting down
when then gates opened and we were slowly away but I didn't
want to force him,@ said Soumillon. AIn the back straight he was
really off the bridle and I didn=t know at that stage whether he
was alright or if he had hurt himself in the gates. But when I
came on the last turn and we went on the outside and passed
the two horses he came on the bit very easily and then when we
got into the straight he changed legs. He added, AUnfortunately
with him it=s good to come late but he also needs to have a
target in front and as the filly was in the middle of the track I
had to shift him a little bit to make him feel like the filly was still
in front and make him react. Fortunately the filly just started to
shorten her stride and my horse kept going. I=m very happy as it
was an important race for us and today is a big day. He=s not
easy any time, and we learn from him every day.@
It=s clear that Vazirabad is a quirky character but fortunately, in
Soumillon and Alain de Royer Dupre, he has fallen into the
hands of two master horsemen who are happy to work with his
little foibles rather than to try to bully him into submission.
AHe=s a special horse,@ admitted Vazirabad=s trainer, who so
deftly managed the career of the highly-strung Classic winner
Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). ABefore he was gelded he was
impossible to train. The first race he ran at Longchamp he did
nothing, the second race he started to do more. We know that
he has a strong turn of foot--it=s his best quality.@
Referring to Vazirabad=s antics at the start, he continued,
ABefore the race he was very relaxed but then he had a problem
in the stalls. That is him--he=s a little crazy. We never go against
him. When he says no we don=t try to force him. He doesn=t try
at all when he=s training, it=s difficult even for him to beat his
lead horse.@
The trainer nominated the newly-promoted G1 Qatar
Goodwood Cup as a big-race target back in Europe for
Vazirabad, who may also head to Royal Ascot. He said, AI=m
thinking of the Ascot Gold Cup, but I won=t run him if it=s too hot
and the ground is too firm. If you want to keep a good horse like
this it=s important to protect him.@
Pedigree Notes...
One of six Group 1 winners for his French-based sire, the
former Horse of the Year Manduro (Ger), Vazirabad is another
great advertisement for the sound decision of the Aga Khan to
buy en masse the stock of Jean-Luc Lagardere, who bred and
raced his Group 3-wining dam, Visorama (Fr), a daughter of the
late breeder=s top-class sire Linamix (Fr). A half-sister to the
G1 Prix de la Foret winner Varenar (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire})
and G2 Prix Greffulhe winner Visindar (Fr) (Sinndar {Ire}),
Visorama has herself produced the listed winner Visoriyna (Fr)
to Vazirabad, who can now be considered to be the best stayer
in Europe.
Jameka (Aus) (Myboycharlie {Ire}) had indicated throughout
her autumn prep that she was building up to a big effort
andBupped to the 2400 metre distance over which she won last
season=s G1 Caulfield CupBthe 4-year-old turned the tables on
her last-start G1 Australian Cup conqueror Humidor (NZ)
(Teofilo {Ire}) to take Saturday=s G1 The BMW at Rosehill.
Jameka broke strongly under Hugh Bowman and led the field
into the first bend, where Lasqueti Spirit (Aus) (Beneteau {Aus})
strolled up and took over. Lasqueti Spirit threw down the
gauntlet down the backstretch, opening up at least 12 lengths
while Jameka led the rest of the pack, with Libran (Ire) (Lawman
{Fr}) and Exospheric (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}) on her heels.
Lasqueti Spirit came under a ride at the 800 metre mark and by
the time they reached the bend Jameka was cruising up to her
ominously. Jameka rolled past Lasqueti Spirit at the 300 metre
mark and never looked like being caught thereafter, widening
her margin to win by 6 1/2 lengths from Humidor and
Exospheric.
Jameka always acted as if this trip would be her game, waiting
to break her maiden until stretched out to the 1400 metres of
the G2 VRC Sires= Produce S. at two. Her next two victories
would come in the 2040 metre G2 The Vase and the 2500 metre
Crown Oaks the following season, and she posted some fine
efforts the following autumn while failing to find the winner=s
enclosure, placing in the G1 Rosehill Guineas and G1 Australian
Derby and running a close fourth in the G1 Australian Oaks.
Jameka added last term=s G3 Naturalism S. and Caulfield Cup
before running down the field when 15th in the G1 Melbourne
Cup and had been building up to her preferred trip this prep,
with fourths in the G1 C.F. Orr S. and G2 Peter Young S.
preceding her runner-up finish in the G1 Australian Cup on
Mar. 11. Trainer and part-owner Ciaron Maher indicated Jameka
could take on the world later this year.
AThere=s the [G1] Queen Elizabeth during The Championships,
there=s Hong Kong, Royal Ascot, even the Yorkshire Oaks, there=s
a bit to look at,== Maher said. AWe need to have some
conversations with the connections. We=ll see how she comes
through this, but she=s such a quality mare.==
Jymcarew (Aus) (Danzero {Aus}). Mine Game has also produced
Nikitas, second in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and third in a
pair of Group 3s. Jameka=s fourth dam is the GI Matchmaker S.
winner Warfever (Fr) (Luthier {Fr}), whose descendants include
the GI Santa Anita H. second Luthier Fever (Mt. Livermore) and
the Listed Breeders= Plate winner and G2 Pago Pago S. second
Vinery Stud S. cont.
Montoya=s Secret extended her win streak to three, in the
process going from maiden winner to Group 1 winner, in a
roughly run renewal of the Vinery Stud S. at Rosehill on
Saturday. Getting over to the rail on the first turn, Montoya=s
Secret saved ground in midpack of the strung out field on the
heels of Dawn Wall (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), with favoured
Foxplay (Aus) (Foxwedge {Aus}) near the rear of the field.
Montoya=s Secret was shuffled back a few places as the field
began to bunch approaching the 800 metre mark, and was
steered to the outside by Noel Callow for running room as
Foxplay rallied on the far outside. A wall of five fillies emerged in
a battle for the lead at the top of the lane, with Smart As You
Think (Aus) (So You Think {NZ}) squeezed out of contention at
the 200 metre mark by Montoya=s Secret and Harlow Gold.
Foxplay, meanwhile, was putting in a fierce rally on the outside
but was forced to check by the drifting winner in the dying
strides as Nurse Kitchen roared down the middle of the course
to grab second.
Co-trainer Leon Corstens diverted the credit to his son and
training partner Troy, telling Racnet.com.au, "Main thanks has
got to go to Troy. If it was left up to me I would have left her
home in the box. I didn't think she'd handle the track. He was
the instigator in this, saying no, take her up there. He certainly
overruled me and I'm pleased he did."
Montoya=s Secret took eight tries to break her maiden, at last
accomplishing that feat going 1400 metres at Pakenham Park on
Mar. 2, and she backed up two weeks later to add a benchmark
64 race going a mile at Moonee Valley when last seen.
Pedigree Notes...
Montoya=s Secret is the best progeny to date out of the
G1 Blue Diamond third Divine Secret, who has proven a very
useful producer with the Group 3-winning Delago=s Secret and
stakes-placed Secret Delight also to her credit. Divine Secret has
a 2-year-old filly by High Chaparral and a yearling colt by
Starspangledbanner (Aus) to come.
Australasia, Mustaaqeem entered his career debut Saturday at
Turffontein with lofty expectations and the weight of the betting
public who pounded him down to 4-5 favoritism. Drawn wide,
Mustaaqeem looked to dip slightly at the break and settled in
midfield while switching his leads a couple of times. Callan
Murray called upon his mount with about 400m to race, and the
response was instant, as Mustaaqeem opened up at will to score
by 7 1/2 lengths in fast time. The winner is a full-brother to
fellow Shadwell colourbearer Rafeef (Aus), himself an
