KiwiSport Induction Workshops
As a requirement for all coaches working in schools funded by KiwiSport all
coaches must complete Sport Auckland’s KiwiSport Induction Workshop.
The KiwiSport Induction Workshop
is in place to help all the coaches
understand best practice when
working in schools and up-skilling
coaches with coaching principles
to complement their code specific
knowledge. Sport Auckland
held two KiwiSport Induction
Workshops during February with
attendance from 70 coaches.
Sport Auckland is always looking
for ways to support their coaches
working in schools and to make
their experiences as positive
as possible when delivering to
children. With this at the front of
mind, Sport Auckland’s Young
People Team identified the
relationship between the teacher
and the coach as being a focus
area in 2017.This focus area was
well received by all participants
at the Induction Workshop. A
key takeaway was to help the
coaches get an understanding
of Physical Literacy. Physical
literacy being the motivation,
confidence, physical competence,
knowledge and understanding by
participants to value and engage
in physical activity and sport
for life. Understanding this will
help coaches and teachers work
together to link what the children
are learning in the classroom into
the sports sessions - making for a
high-quality learning environment.
Over the first two school terms,
the Young People Team will be in
contact with coaches and codes
to gain feedback on how the
workshop has benefitted coaches
and teachers working through their
KiwiSport programmes.
“Previously sport coaches
have been working
in schools delivering
sporting programmes
separate to the NZ
curriculum. The Young
People Team and the
Community Coach
Advisor are bringing
about a change where
sports partner with the
schools to deliver quality
experiences to the
children while they learn
the NZ curriculum.”
Coaching the Teachers
Great coaching is more than teaching how to pass or kick a ball, shoot a goal
or hit the winning forehand - great coaches communicate, connect and inspire
people to achieve improvement in performance. The culture of an organisation
often reflects the level of results they can achieve, whether that be on the
playing field, in the classroom or around the board table.
Utilising key coaching principles
the Sport Waikatere Community
Coach Advisor supported the
Play.Sport team to facilitate a
leadership, culture and team
building workshop at 4 West
Auckland Primary schools.
Across the schools there were 93
attendees consisting of Principals,
Deputy Pricinpals, Board of Trustee
Members, Teachers and other
school support staff.
The focus of the day was to align
and strengthen the culture of the
whole school, from the Board to
the front office. The day’s activities
included team building, leadership
and problem solving bases which
was supported by a self-reflection
session at the end of the day on
the day’s themes.
With new knowledge, school staff
will be able to utilise the day’s
themes in the classroom or if they
find themselves on the sideline as
coach in Primary school sport.
