I s<strong>in</strong>g who I am<br />
Identity, ethnicity and<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividuality <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese music<br />
The 12th International CHIME (European<br />
Foundation for Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Music Research)<br />
Conference, jo<strong>in</strong>tly organised by UCD School<br />
of Music and the Chester Beatty Library, took<br />
place <strong>in</strong> October. This was the first major<br />
academic conference on Ch<strong>in</strong>ese music to be<br />
held <strong>in</strong> Dubl<strong>in</strong>. Specialists from the UK,<br />
Europe, Canada, Ch<strong>in</strong>a, Korea, Taiwan, Hong<br />
Kong, S<strong>in</strong>gapore and the USA gathered to<br />
address the <strong>issue</strong>s of identity, ethnicity and<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividuality via <strong>in</strong>dividual papers, themed<br />
panels, video sessions, roundtables and<br />
<strong>in</strong>terviews with musicians.<br />
The open<strong>in</strong>g day's proceed<strong>in</strong>gs took place<br />
<strong>in</strong> the Chester Beatty Library. Follow<strong>in</strong>g open<strong>in</strong>g<br />
remarks and welcome address by Dr Wolfgang<br />
Marx (Head of UCD School of Music) and<br />
Dr Michael Ryan (Director of Chester Beatty<br />
Library) a film on shadow puppeteers of Gansu,<br />
Western Ch<strong>in</strong>a, kickstarted the conference. This<br />
was followed by the keynote paper delivered by<br />
Professor Mercedes Dujunco from Bard <strong>College</strong>,<br />
New York. A short film portray<strong>in</strong>g Li Guangzu, a<br />
master musician of the pipa four-str<strong>in</strong>g lute, was<br />
l<strong>in</strong>ked to a live <strong>in</strong>terview with the pipa player Liu<br />
Fang from Montreal to end the first day. An<br />
open<strong>in</strong>g reception took place <strong>in</strong> the Chester<br />
Beatty Library that even<strong>in</strong>g. Mr Zhang X<strong>in</strong>seng<br />
(Ambassador of the People's Republic of Ch<strong>in</strong>a)<br />
and Dr Philip Nolan (Deputy President of UCD)<br />
welcomed the delegates and guests. Both<br />
emphasised the importance and significance of<br />
<strong>this</strong> conference and its contribution <strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>ese music and its academic studies to the<br />
UCD community and a wider Dubl<strong>in</strong> audience.<br />
An <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g array of papers and panels on<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>ese music was spread across the next two<br />
and a half days <strong>in</strong> UCD School of Music. The<br />
question of identity, pert<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>ese music<br />
among the diasporic community, and its impact<br />
on local music and musical life, were discussed <strong>in</strong><br />
papers such as ‘The Corneta Ch<strong>in</strong>a: Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />
shawms <strong>in</strong> Cuban Rumba’, ‘The adaptation of<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>ese Yueq<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> n<strong>in</strong>eteenth century Japan’, and<br />
‘S<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g Cz<strong>in</strong>a: the musical repertoires of Czech<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ologists’. A panel on Korean music and the<br />
Korean diaspora <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a focused on vocal styles<br />
and the musical embodiment of identity. Issues<br />
of ethnicity were evident <strong>in</strong> many papers on the<br />
music of ethnic m<strong>in</strong>ority groups <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Yi people <strong>in</strong> Yunnan, the Tibetans<br />
and the Horq<strong>in</strong> Mongolian <strong>in</strong> Eastern Inner<br />
Mongolia. A panel on gender identity had papers<br />
focused on the question of mascul<strong>in</strong>ity and<br />
music <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a, rang<strong>in</strong>g from Uyghur male pop<br />
groups, Korean pop <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a, traditional Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />
shawm bands and the male imagery to the<br />
battle of image and style between Ch<strong>in</strong>ese male<br />
pianists Lang Lang and Yundi Li. Lively discussions<br />
and exchanges of ideas flowed freely <strong>in</strong> almost<br />
every session.<br />
The highlight of the conference was a concert of<br />
music from the pla<strong>in</strong>s to the grasslands featur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the mukam music of the Uyghur people <strong>in</strong><br />
X<strong>in</strong>jiang, the music of the pipa lute and 22-str<strong>in</strong>g<br />
zheng zither, the classical 7-str<strong>in</strong>g q<strong>in</strong> zither, and<br />
Mongolian Long Song, horse-head fiddle music<br />
and overtone s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g. The concert, open to the<br />
general public, took place <strong>in</strong> the Chester Beatty<br />
Library. It was the first time these musical genres<br />
were performed <strong>in</strong> Ireland, and it was <strong>in</strong>deed a<br />
rare opportunity for an Irish audience to hear<br />
these masterpieces <strong>in</strong> one s<strong>in</strong>gle concert.<br />
A selection of music was also performed at a<br />
lunchtime concert <strong>in</strong> the open courtyard <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Arts Café <strong>in</strong> UCD Newman Build<strong>in</strong>g. The <strong>in</strong>formal<br />
concert attracted UCD staff and students, many<br />
of whom expressed their astonishment at the<br />
unique and beautiful sounds.<br />

Europe’s largest student<br />
fashion show 2008<br />
UCD is proud to claim ownership of Europe's largest<br />
student fashion event - the annual UCD Fashion Show<br />
- which <strong>in</strong>volves a cast of over 200 students from<br />
across campus, rais<strong>in</strong>g thousands for Irish charities <strong>in</strong><br />
one of Ireland's largest venues.<br />
The 22nd show will take place <strong>in</strong> the RDS Simmonscourt<br />
on Friday 29 February 2008 before an audience of 5,300<br />
and will feature 140 students modell<strong>in</strong>g on the catwalk,<br />
20 student dancers and a beh<strong>in</strong>d the scenes organis<strong>in</strong>g<br />
committee of 30 who are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> fundrais<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
production, ticket sales, market<strong>in</strong>g and public relations.<br />
Proceeds from the events from 2007 - 09 will go to the<br />
Down Syndrome Centre, an Irish charity fundrais<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
build Ireland's first centre to provide dedicated services to<br />
people with Down Syndrome and their families. Because<br />
of the charity's <strong>in</strong>volvement, the show will welcome a<br />
further ten young people with Down Syndrome to<br />
model alongside the students <strong>in</strong> Simmonscourt.<br />

group Extreme Rhythm will open the<br />
show. Styl<strong>in</strong>g will be by Graham Cruz<br />
who regularly features on RTE’s ‘Off<br />
the Rails’ and dance will be<br />
choreographed by Jane Shortall.<br />
Special awards will <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
'Male/Female Model of the Year'<br />
and 'Young Designer of the Year' -<br />
a competition which <strong>in</strong>vites entries<br />
from students <strong>in</strong> design colleges<br />
throughout the country.<br />

€20 for students, €40 for adults,<br />
€100 for a family ticket (2 adults and<br />
2 students) and VIP tickets, €100.<br />
