Malibu Garden Club to host
landscape designer April 5
Submitted by the Malibu
Garden Club
When the Malibu Garden
Club meets at 7 p.m.
April 5, landscape designer
Randy Wild will present
“Cycads: the Perfect Plant
for Malibu” at the Point
Dume Clubhouse, located
at 29500 Heathercliff Dr.,
in Malibu.
Wild’s passion for cycads
started when he began collecting
these plants in his
20s. He has had this passion
for the last 40 years.
Wild specializes in architectural
landscape design
and he also does installations.
He has been in business
since 1989. He works
primarily in the Brentwood,
Santa Monica and
Malibu areas.
When asked what captivated
his attention about
these plants, he mentioned
that cycads go back to the
time of the dinosaurs. They
are the oldest fossilized
plant that we have on record.
They are considered
the first conifer and the first
plant that has male and female
genders in separate
plants. They are also the
first plant to reproduce by
pollen.
Although the 350 accepted
species of cycads
come from all over the
world , they are primarily
found in the equatorial
belt and the tropical
regions of Australia, South
Africa and Mexico. And
they make the perfect xeriscape
plant, something
important to garden aficionados
in southern California.
Although they need
to be watered to become
established, once they are
established they need very
little water. While beautiful,
cycads tend to be very
heavy to transport. Larger
specimens even require
cranes for installation.
