India– a country by name, but a continent in scale, India in one
word is diversity: a place like no other. When you think of India, the
first thing that comes to mind is slums, chaos on the roads, rushing
around, Slumdog Millionaire the movie and lest we forget about the
successful Bollywood film industry: but there is more to this country
than meets the eye, tourism. India will surprise you with its unique
once-in-a-lifetime experience and you better be prepared to enjoy it
with your eyes open. The peaks of the Himalayas band its north.
Moving south, you pass through Rajasthan, a microcosm of India with
its forts, palaces and temples, and the Taj Mahal, but also its bustling
markets and opportunities to spot a tiger. In India’s northeast corner,
Kolkata still exudes its colonial heritage in a landscape clothed with
tea plantations. West coast Mumbai is an improbable proposition – a
hub of manufacturing where you can wander among art deco
architecture or through a teeming bazaar. Down in India’s south,
cruising Kerala’s backwaters on a converted rice barge is a suitably
relaxed way to embrace this region’s laid-back approach to life.
Beaches in India are incredibly scenic and they serve for every
purpose; Be it the water sports that enthrall your or the picturesque
romantic locations that entice you. The prime beach destination in
India is by all means, Goa. Goa is also called the beach capital of India
as it has the major portion of its tourism dependant on its sun kissed
beaches. The highlight of this majestic land has to be the eternal Taj
Mahal, an epitome of love. A truly majestic and awe-inspiring sight,
this towering monument to love was aptly described as ‘A teardrop on
the cheek of time’ by Noble laureate Rabindranath Tagore. We at Zigi
Tours grasps and embraces the sanctity of truly discovering a rich
culture and its people. Come and explore with us.
Tanjore
After breakfast proceed for Tanjore sightseeing which will
start with visit to Brihadeeshwara Temple, built in the 10th
century by Raja Chola. It is considered to be artistically the
most perfect of Dravida temples. Besides the temple, you will
visit the Palace most of which is in ruins housing the Tamil
University Museum, the Art Gallery, the Saraswati Mahal
Library which houses palm leaf & paper manuscripts.
Option: - See Veena, bronze making and Tanjore painting
while in Tanjore
When in Tanjore ask to be taken to one of the houses where they continue making these wonderful instruments. It is said that the Veena
is one of the three celestial musical instruments - along with flute and Mridangam - finding references from Vedic times. You can watch
hand carving this traditional instrument and speak to the owner whose family has been making Veenas for generations. For those not
familiar with the instrument, a Veena is about five feet in length consisting of a large resonator (kudam), a wooden bridge (kudurai) and
a tapering hollow neck (dandi). And it is unique to Tanjore because the instrument is made from a particular strain of matured jack fruit
tree found only here. The best part of this tour is that it can be easily done after the visit to the Big Temple. From here we proceed to a
local house to see a demonstration of bronze idol making- a process which has not changed much since the Chola times.
Overnight at Tanjore
even the most seasoned traveller.
It will be a special Chettinad cuisine dinner on a banana leaf at
The Bangala.
Chettinad cuisine originated from the Chettiar community in
