OUR SOUTH SHORE SECTION {MAKING A DIFFERENCE SINCE 1922} Community Service We take great pride in our many community service projects. During the holiday season, we organize food drives in which hundreds of bags of groceries are collected and donated to local agencies, such as the Hispanic Brotherhood, the food banks at the Vineyard and St. Anthony’s Churches and Central Synagogue, St Agnes Outreach, Rosa Lee Young Childhood Center, Rockville Centre Recreation Center, and the Martin Luther King Center. Other projects include clothing, books and school supply drives to support community not-for-profit agencies like those noted above and the Back2School store. We have helped staff the Family Court Children’s Center in Nassau County with volunteers and contribute to the participants as needs arise. Our longstanding tutor and mentoring program at Freeport’s Archer Street Elementary has helped hundreds of students who need a little extra support and attention. The NCJW annual community Chanukah Party delights and entertains children while collecting toys that are later distributed to local children in need. One of our signature community service programs is our twice-a-week Senior Club, now in its 63rd year at the RVC Recreation Center. There, over 200 older adults enjoy a number of weekly activities including the very popular duplicate bridge program. Each April we prepare Mother’s Day gift bags for women in need. They are filled with personal care products and our members deliver them to such places as the South Nassau Communities Hospital Family Clinic, the Safe Center serving victims of domestic violence or child abuse, and Bethany House, a temporary residence for homeless women and children. It is remarkable to realize that today’s women of South Shore Section continue the work that was begun in 1922. We are very proud of the vital impact that the South Shore Section has had on our local community for the past 95 years. Our history is rich with community involvement, from helping immigrants arriving at ports in Freeport and New York City, to assisting the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Centre; from providing aid to undernourished Jewish children in Europe to contributing to Island Harvest; from supporting legislation to establish a minimum wage to advocating for a woman’s right to choose. 4
Education We strive to offer an array of educational programs aimed to reach the various interests of our members. In the past we have brought in notable speakers such as Hilary Clinton, Mario Cuomo, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Sarah Weddington, Judae Pearl and Ruth Messinger. We have also brought in local authors who have written books on such topics as prison reform, healthy living, religious persecution and other life stories. We continue to participate in a joint intergenerational women’s Seder with the sisterhoods of Temple B’nai Sholom-Beth David and Central Synagogue Beth-Emeth and the Peninsula Section of NCJW. We sponsor two book clubs, an evening one, which has been meeting since 1995, and the day Helene Zarowitz Interfaith group, which has been meeting for over 30 years. Advocacy We are also involved in many advocacy and social action projects that affect Rockville Centre and the surrounding area. One of our earliest initiatives included the first study on child day care needs, “Windows on Day Care.“ We promote the vote with voter registration programs, provide awareness campaigns on sex and drug trafficking, including our newest Teen Trafficking project, as well as work on strategies to end domestic violence and child abuse. We continue to be involved in BenchMark TM , NCJW’s Campaign to Save Roe and advocate on key legislative issues throughout each year. Today, 95 years after the founding members of the South Shore Section of NCJW began their volunteer efforts, the work of our section remains constant and the dedication of our members steadfast. 5
