Side Trips
It’s been quite a while since my husband
and I have gone to a movie. More often
we end up watching a rented DVD at
home, or just catch up on television shows
we’ve recorded.
I knew “The Shack”
was coming out in
March, and having
read the book a number
of years ago, I suggested
a Friday night
date to the movie
theatre.
We were home from
work in plenty of time,
leisurely ate dinner,
then drove to the theatre
across town. As
MYRNA
WAGNER
we turned the corner, we were greeted with
a line of people spilling out the door and
onto the sidewalk.
What? One of my co-workers had gone
the night before and never mentioned a
crowd. We joined the line and became
aware of an awful lot of parents with small
children. That’s when it clicked with me:
Opening night for “Beauty and the Beast.”
The lone person selling tickets worked
as quickly as he could, but we still waited
15 minutes to get to the window. I asked
if “The Shack” had started, and how much
we’d missed.
“Let’s see,” he said. “Looks like we’re
about 25 minutes into the show. That one
started at 6:45.”
My husband and I looked at each other
and came to the same conclusion. “We’ll
come back tomorrow,” I said to the young
man.
Saturday night, we arrived at 6:35. No
line. No waiting. Not even for the popcorn.
The movie? I enjoyed it; Jeff not as much.
Diane O’Hern also will give
two art classes, open to all
ages, at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Saturday, June 7, at the Dickinson
County Nature Center.
She will begin the classes with
a draw-along of bugs, bees,
fish, ducks, swans, dragonflies,
butterflies and wildflowers, and
participants will be able to create
what they sketched with three-dimensional
materials, such as wire,
wood and clay.
Students will explore textures
in nature, tree park prints and assembled
rock shapes.
“All make-and-take projects will
set the mood for a meaningful, fun,
creative sculpture class,” O’Hern
said. “I hope all participants will
leave with a thought that nature
is always there for us. In looking,
thinking, feeling and doing, you can
be drawn into natural beauty visually.”
To register for her art classes,
Diane O’Hern to display passion through artwork
Diane O’Hern has a passion for
both art and nature.
The Eagle Grove resident
has combined her interests in a multimedia
exhibit, which will be featured
April-June in the eARTh exhibit area at
the Dicksinson County Nature Center
in Okoboji.
O’Hern grew up in the Storm Lake
area, and much of her childhood was
spent outdoors, from family picnics
and reunions in the Iowa Great Lakes
area to summers at Lutheran Lakeside
Camp on East Lake Okoboji.
She’s continued to regularly visit
the area, and her passion for nature
has done anything but subside. Such
outdoor experiences deeply influence
O’Hern’s artwork. She began work on
her nature-related exhibit in March
2016, using photos taken during trips
to the Iowa Great Lakes as inspiration
for her pieces.
“I just really love to go out in nature
— go for walks or bike rides on
the nature trails, and I always have
my camera with me,” O’Hern said.
“I take pictures of sunsets or wildlife
in
NATURE
and then just create my art from my
photographs.”
She was drawn to submit her work
to be exhibited at the Dickinson
County Nature Center after visiting
the area.
“I went down to the pond and the
butterfly house, and I noticed the
exhibit area,” O’Hern said. “I thought
it would be really cool to share my vision
of nature art with everyone.”
Her “Color in Nature” display will
feature a variety of pieces, ranging
from oil paintings and drawings to
sculptures with wire, fabric, wood,
clay and stone.
O’Hern is an accomplished artist,
having exhibited her work in places
such as Reiman Gardens and the Mary
Greenlèy Medical Center in Ames as
well as the Pearson Lakes Art Center
in Okoboji. She was chosen as Elementary
Teacher of the Year for her
nature-themed art projects in 2014
after retiring from her 32-year career
as an art teacher in the Eagle Grove
School District.
She hopes that people will focus
on the vibrant colors in her artwork,
and she wants to spur memories of
outdoor experiences, such as her own.
“I hope to bring that life to those
who have never lived it, or to bring
back wonderful memories to those
who have,” O’Hern said. “When looking
at my exhibit, one can immerse
their vision in all that nature has to
offer.” F
All about the eggs
Sheldon hosts annual Easter
Egg Hunt on April 15
Sheldon’s City Park soon will be
bursting with eggs.
Literally.
For the past 13 years, the Sheldon
Chamber and Development Corp.
has hosted a free Children’s Easter Egg
Hunt on the Saturday before Easter
for children ages 2-12, and this year’s
event will take place 10 a.m. Saturday,
April 15, at Sheldon City Park.
But the truly remarkable thing
about this event isn’t the number of
years it has been held or even that it is
free to attend. What’s impressive is the
sheer number of eggs that are hidden
every year — 15,000.
The Easter Bunny and Spring Duck
— along with the help of the SCDC
staff and some volunteers — come at
8:30 a.m. to hide the plastic eggs.
Shanelle Matus, SCDC executive director,
is looking forward to the event.
“I love Easter, and to me, the Easter
eggs out in the park look like a
sprinkled cupcake, and the children
look like little chickens picking up the
eggs,” she said.
The kids and their parents are
invited to
come to the
park at 10
a.m. for the
Easter Egg Hunt.
The park is divided up into sections
so that each age category has a designated
spot to search for their eggs. The
age groups are 2-4, 5-7, 8-9 and 10-12.
Instead of releasing all the kids at
once, the age groups are staggered a
little so that parents with kids in different
age categories can watch all of
their children.
While parents can watch and take
pictures, children get their eggs on
their own, and the eggs contain a variety
of treats. There is candy in some,
of course, but some will contain coupons,
which have been donated by
local businesses.
The Children’s Easter Egg Hunt also
includes a bike give-away. There are
eight bikes — a boy’s and a girl’s bike
A registration form needs to be
filled out ahead of time to enter into
the drawing, and those registration
forms need to be brought to the park
at the time of the event. Those forms
can be filled out at the Sheldon city
offices, the SCDC office or online at
www.sheldoniowa.com.
This is an event that brings joy to
the children, families and people who
organize the event.
“It’s just a great event,” Matus said.
Men’s gospel quartet makes
music at Dordt College
Gospel music will be echoing
around the campus of Dordt
College in Sioux Center next
weekend.
Specifically, Southern Gospel music
and more specifically still, the music
of The Dixie Melody Boys.
The men’s quartet will perform at
6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at B.J.
Haan Auditorium. Tickets are $15 and
will only be available at the door the
day of the show.
Jim Driesen is the concert organizer,
and as a self-proclaimed major fan of
Southern Gospel, has been scheduling
similar spring shows for the past
17 years in northwest Iowa. Each year,
the concert helps raise funds for Hope
Haven in Rock Valley.
“I’ve loved Southern Gospel and
quartets for a long time,” Driesen said.
“So, I decided to get different groups
to this part of the state. I know pretty
much all the good ones and decided
we would try The Dixie Melody Boys
this year.”
The Dixie Melody Boys, based out
of Kinston, NC, was organized more
than five decades ago and has been
owned and managed by bass singer
Ed O’Neal since the early 1960s.
Over the decades, they’ve garnered a
Grammy nomination, 20 Top 40 Hits,
including at least one No. 1 single,
new hit releases, such as “I’ll Be Living
That Way,” “I Won’t Compromise,”
“Welcome Home,” “Antioch Church
Choir” and “I’m One Of Them,” and
an induction into the Southern Gospel
Music Hall of Fame for O’Neal in
2004.
“They’re good old Southern Gospel,
and people will really love them,”
Driesen said.
He usually schedules a more local
quartet to open up the concert each
spring, and this year, he has lined up
the Masters Voice Quartet out of Sioux
Falls, SD.
Combined in one night, it will be a
fantastic evening of first-class Gospel
music in Sioux Center. F
Chef Susanne tackles typical Southern dishes
Luncheon with Instruction is taking
a culinary trip to the South
this month. The menu is dubbed
“Southern Comfort” and is full of
soul food staples like collard greens,
chicken and waffles and shrimp and
grits.
Comfort foods have always had a
place at tables throughout the country
and have even become trendy recently
at high-end restaurants in big
cities from coast-to-coast, which is
part of what Chef Susanne Bicknese
looks for when putting together a
menu.
“Food is trendy like clothing is
trendy, and comfort food is a huge
thing right now,” Bicknese said. “I
like to get ideas from my audience
and then look at things people are
doing throughout the U.S.”
The next classes take place at noon
and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 12,
and will cost $35 for nonmembers of
the Pearson Lakes Art Center.
Comfort Food
Bicknese likes to lay out the themes
for an entire year’s worth of classes
first. Then she focuses in on each specific
menu.
“That gives people an idea of what
classes they’d like to attend,” she said.
“I like doing regional classes where we
can focus on different areas in different
classes.”
Next up is researching specific recipes
for each dish and finding ways to
make them work for people in northwest
Iowa.
“I’ll do research state by state,”
Bicknese said. “From Virginia through
Texas or Alabama to Georgia, a lot of
people have recipes for the same thing
that are just a bit differnt, like with
Brunswick Stew and Spicy Shrimp
and Grits.”
Bicknese makes sure to use recipes
in each Luncheon and Evening with
Instruction class that people can produce
at home with products they can
get in local grocery stores.
Every month, Chef Susanne also
goes over some cooking basics, including
common skills everyone
should know and ingredients that
should be on everyone’s shelf at
home.
She imparts her lessons on about
20-25 people in each class. About 20
is the maximum for the Luncheon
with Instruction, which lasts about
two hours, while 25 is about the cap
for the evening class, which goes a bit
longer.
“The max number is for expediency
and feeding everyone. I want
to be able to maximize what each
person gets out of the class,” Bicknese
said. “I’m so fortunate to work with
Pearson Lakes Art Center. They’re so
accomodating and make everyone
feel comfortable. It’s a great environment,
and the classes are almost
always full.”
During the classes, attendees get to
watch Bickneses prepare each item
on the menu as well as try each dish.
Guests also are invited to assist from
time to time and are encouraged to
ask plenty of questions and give feedback.
Each guest also receives one
complimentary beverage, including
wine, beer and soft drinks.
Chef Susanne noted that the classes
have the feel of a lunch or evening
out with friends, and she is thrilled to
see new faces.
“The dinner class gets a lot of couples
now, so it can be kind of a date
night thing,” Bicknese said. “We have
a lot of fun and a good, social time
with good food.”
Chef Susanne also states her goal
with each class is to make sure nobody
leaves hungry.
With macaroni and cheese, buttermilk
biscuits and honey, Southernfried
chicken and waffles, chess pie
and much more on the menu, it’s
safe to say that goal will be fulfilled
once again. F
Clay County Heritage Center in
Spencer.
Celebrating a local business story,
the facility is presenting “Clay County
and the Automotive Business: You
Build a Business with People” in
conjunction with Arnold Motor Supply
and showcasing the business’s 90
years of operation.
It all began with a book.
Three years ago, Eric Johnson, vice
president of The Merrill Co., wrote
“You Build a Business with People.”
“The purpose was to tell the story
of the company and E.P Arnold, his
leadership and entrepreneurship,”
Johnson said. “I worked closely with
the museum during research for the
book and asked about their interest in
doing an exhibit since I thought there
would be plenty of artifacts we could
find.”
Clay County Heritage celebrates local business
The timing worked out well, as Arnold
Motor Supply celebrates its 90th
anniversary this year.
The exhibit opened April 5 and is
free to the public thanks to a sponsorship
from the Spencer Hy-Vee.
“We thought what a great way to
show what the impact of a business
can be in a community our size not
just at the local level but state and
even nationwide,” said Ryan Odor,
director of the Clay County Heritage
Center.
And Johnson was right about being
able to find plenty of artifacts for the
exhibit. He said they put a call out to
the company’s 600 employees, who
he noted already are “car people” and
collectors themselves.
The exhibit includes the company’s
papers of incorporation, the 5 points
letter from E.P. Arnold, many photos,
a replica 1940s gas station, the 1927
replica of E.P. Arnold’s delivery vehicle
and family and personal history of
E.P. Arnold. The exhibit also will have
artifacts on the Bulldog Foot Accelerator
and will feature several artifacts on
loan from Vander Haag’s, Inc.
There also is E.P. Arnold’s desk
from the Fourth Street store as well as
typewriters used in the offices. There
also are examples of the company
calendars that have been put out every
year.
“We’re celebrating 90 years, and
why we’ve been so successful — one
of the largest parts distributors in the
U.S. — is the culture of Arnold that’s
service-driven and customer-first.
Years after he was gone, that is still
there,” Johnson said. “We really want
to look forward and also pay homage
to the foundation Arnold got us on.”
It’s a foundation not just for Arnold
Motor Supply, but one that they
want to share with the entire community
of Spencer and beyond.
“We want to grow apprecation for
Clay County and invite local high
school classes in entrepreneurship,
FFA, automotive and more to come
take a look and foster an appreciation
of entrepreneurship,” Odor said.
Odor’s grandfather, Gar, actually
was general manager of Arnold Motor
Supply at one point as well, so he
knows firsthand how connected the
auto parts business and the community
are to each other.
It’s something both he and Johnson
hope people come to see and appreciate
at the Clay County Heritage
Center.
“Some people don’t realize what’s
here under their noses,” Johnson
said. “We think it’s important to be
a good corporate citizen and foster
growth in the community, draw
interest in the Heritage Center and
show how important we all are to
each other.” F
