PSLE - a placement exam
• Need to reflect the relative achievement level of pupils
among their peers
• Places pupils into different courses according to their
academic ability
• Enables posting to secondary schools by merit and as
far as possible into a school of their choice

PSLE Aggregate Score

PSLE Aggregate Score
What is it ?
• the sum of the pupil’s T-scores
in all 4 subjects

PSLE Aggregate Score
What is it ?
• Different subjects have
different levels of difficulty
• The spread of marks from the
average mark, i.e. the
standard deviation
(spread = standard deviation)
also differs

Set A: 30, 40, 50, 60, 70
Set B: 35, 45, 50, 55, 65
PSLE Aggregate Score
What is SPREAD ?
30 40 50 60 70
35 45 50 55 65

A need for standardisation of
the raw scores
PSLE Aggregate Score
Raw scores to T-Score
Transformed Score
or T-Score

PSLE Aggregate Score
Why is T-score necessary?
• The raw mark obtained in the
exam only shows how good the
pupil is in that subject.
• The T-score gives the relative
position of a pupil’s
performance as compared to
the performance of all the
other pupils in that subject

PSLE Aggregate Score
Example
H U R R A Y !
I scored 85% in
both English
and Mother
Tongue !
Sarah

What is it ?
PSLE Aggregate Score
Sarah scores 85% in both EL and MT
Her performance in MT
is very close to that of
other pupils
She did much better
in EL as compared to
other pupils
EL
MT
85%
0 EL ave
MT ave
PSLE Aggregate Score
Conversion to T-Score
T-Score
EL MT
85% 85%
ave = 60
50
ave = 80
T-Score converts average mark of each subject to a common
score of 50 points. It also converts other marks taking into
consideration the extent to which they differ from the average and
the size of spread of the marks around the average.

PSLE Aggregate Score
T-Score calculation
How is T-Score calculated for
each subject?
T
=
(X
50 + 10
- Y)
Z
where
X: pupil’s mark for the subject
Y: average mark (mean) scored by all
pupils
Z: standard deviation

PSLE Aggregate Score
T-Score calculation
Example:
• Pupil’s mark (X) in exam = 50.0
• Average mark (Y) scored by
all pupils = 63.5
• Standard deviation = 9.4
T = 50 + 10 (50 – 63.5)
= 35.64
9.4
