Message posted on CDEM Facebook page advising “3.56AM - LATEST UPDATE: Christchurch Civil<br />

Defence and Emergency Management has activated its Emergency Operations Centre and is<br />

currently responding to <strong>the</strong> earthquake. Civil Defence Controller John Mackie says people in<br />

low-lying coastal areas within one kilometre <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Canterbury coast are instructed to evacuate<br />

inland or head to higher ground. <strong>Tsunami</strong> sirens have been sounding for some time and <strong>the</strong>re<br />

operation may be intermittent but <strong>the</strong> precautionary evacuation order remains in place”.<br />

Text message from Mayor to NewstalkZB – “I’ve just arrived at council – will have to get briefing<br />

from EOC first. Will txt when I know”.<br />

Text alert received by CCC staff directing <strong>the</strong>m to check email – “National Warning#6 NO<br />

CHANGE <strong>Tsunami</strong> Threat to Marine and Land Areas”<br />

Message posted on NZ Civil Defence Facebook page advising: MCDEM has issued a tsunami<br />

warning and land threat from East Cape to Southland, including Wellington, Marlborough<br />

Sounds/Tasman Bay and <strong>the</strong> Chatham Islands, and a marine and beach threat for all o<strong>the</strong>r New<br />

Zealand coastal areas. The first tsunami waves have arrived but it is too early to know what<br />

damage or casualties <strong>the</strong>re may have been. Fur<strong>the</strong>r waves should be expected and may be<br />

larger or more dangerous. See <strong>the</strong> map for more information. New Zealanders should stay <strong>of</strong>f<br />

<strong>the</strong> beaches, stay out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> water, and not go sightseeing. People are encouraged to keep<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves informed and follow <strong>the</strong> advice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir local civil defence groups as <strong>the</strong> situation<br />

develops across <strong>the</strong> country. Spread <strong>the</strong> word to any family or friends who are living or staying<br />

near <strong>the</strong> coast. Information can be found through radio, TV and social media. If you have been<br />

advised to evacuate, follow your local tsunami evacuation procedures. The response is currently<br />

being managed by local authorities.”<br />
