The underestimated material: Plywood
In musical instrument making, woodwind instrument making has probably the
highest requirements on the materials used.
Wood expands in contact with humidity. Some types of woods more so than
others, some less. There is not a naturally grown type of wood that can go
against the laws of nature, even when an instrument maker uses elaborate
technology for impregnation.
Over 100 years ago, a simple and effective method was invented from a German
business man, Heinrich H. Basse, which reduces nearly completely the dimensional
variation of the wood.
He glued together many thin
layers of wood under heat
and pressure at a 90° angle.
This way he neutralized the
varying swelling and shrinking
of the wood, making the
wood free of warping and
cracking. Plywood was born.
For our instruments, we use
carefully selected birch plywood,
which is specially cut
and glued.
Along with the lacquering,
we get instruments that set
standards in terms of reliability
and sound.
Quality only goes in one
direction.
