Editor’s Message
It was a fantastic turn out at the Spring Kick-Off in
Hastings this past Saturday. I estimated approximately
60-65 people were there for the annual gathering of the
faithful that Spring was really here.
Ice flows on the Mississippi are signs of Spring, right!
Two souls braved the elements and drove their MGs to
the gathering, Mark from Quality Coaches drove his
yellow MGB -GT, who appeared all warm and
comfortable upon arrival. Dawn, our former Madam
Vice however arrived a bit later in her MGB, but she
appeared to have taken a route through glacier country
on her way to Hastings, as she was rather frozen upon
arrival. I can’t believe the heater was not adequate for a
sunny spring day drive.
Of course, Hearty Thanks to Diane Vinar and Dave
Braun (pronounced Brown, please) for putting the event
together. Our club relies on the kindness of strangers
volunteers! And these two do quite a bit for us.
The Spring Kick-Off marks something other than the
start of the new driving season, it also marks the last day
to pay your dues at the discounted rate of $30.00. After
the Spring Kick-Off dues go back to their regular $35.00.
It is now April, which also means members have another
month or so to pay their dues before being dropped from
getting the newsletter. Dropping members from the
newsletter distribution list is a pain, as a month or so
later I have to the names back in again, once they have
paid. Please pay promptly. It saves us all time.
Joan Petroff noticed that that Saturday, May 7th is
Drive Your MGA Day. MMGG has nothing scheduled
for this annual event, but Joan & John are wondering if
“Should we do something? Perhaps we could organize a
short drive here in Bloomington and have a patio party at
our house afterward. What do you think?” Let’s get our
thinking caps on, and get back to Joan & John on this. If
an event is organized, I’ll update everyone in the weeks
ahead, and get it into the May Gazette. For now it is in
the “Other” calendar awaiting more information.
You will notice to the left of my rantings, the New
Members list. Six new families! I believe this a new
record number for one month.
Steve Greenway,
V. President MMGG
Who is going to Reno this year? I’m trying to get an idea
of who might attend and how they will get there. I’m also
planning to coordinate a caravan of MGers who are going
to drive out – if there is enough interest. I’ll be asking
around at the Kickoff Brunch so if you are thinking about
going and haven’t spoken with me already please drop me
a note at VPresident@minnesotamg.org or call me at
952-715-1724.
Have you ever done, or purchased, something that your
spouse/significant other didn’t completely approve of?
Apparently I have, so now I’m trying to find someone
else to blame it on. (Not that Sue will buy it for a second,
but maybe I can feel better about it anyway.) Here’s my
story: I went to Walrich’s Big Garage Sale expecting to
buy nothing, yet it cost me over $200 to get out the door.
I now have side curtains and a radiator for an MGA …
that I don’t have...and Sue doesn’t want.
Steve Rixen has a 1958 MGA project car that he and Kim
REALLY want me to take. Steve was just waiting at the
garage sale for me to show up (probably for hours.) When
I walked in the door he had already scoped out all the
parts that he said I would need for his “A.” Actually I
think he was calling it my “A” rather than his – playing up
the psychology angle – he’s no dummy, but maybe I am
because I bought the parts even though I knew what he
was doing. Now I won’t have any choice but to get his “A”
so I’ll have a use for these parts.
There are at least three problems with this whole plan. 1)
Sue really doesn’t want the car, 2) I have nowhere to work
on an additional car right now, and 3) I have no idea how
to repair a rusty car even if I had it.
I have a 2-car garage and three cars. Our “B” is in off-site
storage right now, but once it comes out, it will sit on my
side of the garage, leaving my truck out in the driveway.
Sue hasn’t offered-up her side of the garage for the “A”.
Asking her didn’t seem like a particularly good idea, so
I’m not going there.
The best answer is probably to build another garage stall
complete with heat, A/C, a lift, cable TV, some
comfortable chairs and maybe even a tiki bar. That’s not
likely to happen though so I guess the next best answer is
to put the MGA in my shop. But I’m building a boat in
the shop right now and there won’t be any room for a car
until the boat is gone. I probably need to get busy and
finish the boat so I can haul it to the cabin – which I also
don’t have yet. (Are you noticing a theme here?) I’m sure
none of you do things like this.
It’s actually quite logical though, building a boat is much
cheaper and easier than building a cabin. And once you
have a boat, who could possibly resist getting a cabin to
go with it? OK, that one made more sense in my head
than it does on paper so don’t think about it too hard.
You may be wondering where all this boat and cabin stuff
started. Well, it’s all Ken Merrill’s fault. You see he and
Diane invited Sue and I to a wine tasting party back
around October. Once we were suitably inebriated he
pulled a pair of hip waders out of his car and stuck them
in my car (don’t ask, I’m confused about it too.) That got
me to thinking about fishing and lakes, which led to
thoughts about cabins, which I don’t have, and then
boats, which I also don’t have…well didn’t have at the
time anyway. Now I have an unfinished boat sitting in my
shop that is just begging for a cabin to go with it.
Obviously Ken’s fault.
PAGE 4
MINNESOTA MG GROUP APRIL 2011 VOLUME 11 ISSUE 4
OK, back to the MGA – that I don’t have ( and which is
Steve Rixen’s fault) Assuming I eventually get the “A” to
my shop, I really have no idea where to start. I don’t
know how to weld and I’ve never done body work. Heck,
I didn’t even know that I was supposed to put dryer
sheets in my MG over the winter. Call me dumb, but I
never thought about it. Now I suppose by the time I get
access to the car in mid-April the static cling could be so
bad I’ll need a pry bar to get the doors open. You should
probably be glad that you aren’t me.
I guess I need to finish this column so I can go work on
the boat, and then get started on the cabin so I’ll have a
place to put the boat other than the shop, so I can get
that MGA which will give me a place to use the radiator
that I bought. This is sounding like a lot of work. I’m
glad I can blame others for this because I’d hate to think
that I brought all this effort and expense on myself.
Another sure sign of Spring!
This Month’s Puzzler ???
One of the numerous extra repairs I needed to do
when completing the clutch replacement last Fall,
was to replace my slightly bent fan. When I put this
back together last Fall, it appeared to be correct, as
the hollow - concave side of the fan seemed to fit so
nicely against the spacer on the water pump.
However, this Spring the angle of the fan blades
appear to be going the wrong way. I’ve held the old
fan in there and turned it back and forth, but I can’t
make up my mind if it is actually backwards or not.
Your thoughts!
John Twist visits Quality Coaches
On Saturday and Sunday March 12 and 13 John
Twist of University Motors presented a tech
seminar hosted by Mark Brandow of Quality
Coaches. Thanks go to Mark, Val Walrich, Randy
Byboth and James for the warm welcome, great
venue, and food.
John has over 40 years experience in MGs,
including a stint as a mechanic at the original
University Motors MG repair shop in England.
John is a prolific writer whose articles appear
regularly in the MG Driver and works such as
Lindsey Porter’s ageless book MGB: Guide to
Purchase and D.Y.I Restoration. The knowledge
presented by John is probably worth several books,
in fact, one of my favorite handbooks is the
University Motors Technical Book which John updates
and makes available each year. John has also
undertaken the transfer of the mid-seventies British
Leyland filmstrip seminars offered in to dealer
servicemen and sales personal. The DVD is a lot of
fun to view, and both Diane and I enjoyed it. These
and other works are available by contacting John at:
johntwist@universitymotorsltd.com
The seminar was all about getting more power to
the wheels of a ‘street’ MG. John professes to be a
rotary dial guy, and the seminar followed that theme
throughout. There are many ver y involved
approaches to increase power on our cars from
engine and gearbox swaps to fuel injection and
wheel replacements. Overall, John favors the
process of achieving improved engine breathing,
and increasing the efficiency of the driveline. John
loves MGs and offers that at some point with
Japanese gearboxes and complete engine changes
the car looses its character and becomes something
different entirely, rendering the point of owning and
caring for a British motoring icon moot. John is also
very clear that many of the modifications offered by
parts dealers and MG ‘gurus’ are much more
appropriate to the racetrack than the street. This
becomes clear if you examine the amount of time a
driver spends at any given RPM or power setting. A
street driver idles at a stoplight, shifts at between
3500 and 4000 RPM and cruises in the lower end
of the RPM range from 2500 to 3500 RPM. The
vast percentage of street time is in cruise and
secondarily at the idle range. A racer, on the other
hand, idles very little, shifts at over 6000 RPM and
will be at or near his maximum RPM throughout
most of his driving. Another purely mechanical view
is that the brakes necessary to stop the car are such
that they will just lock the wheels under full
braking. The brakes and tires need to be matched
to achieve these needs at the speeds normally
driven, and it is easy to overmatch either if you are
not careful. Looking at it this way it becomes easy
to select the modifications that will best suit your
MG.
John goes to his whiteboard to demonstrate that
Power is equal to Internal Driveline Losses plus
PAGE 6
MINNESOTA MG GROUP APRIL 2011 VOLUME 11 ISSUE 4
Acceleration Available; and that Dollars Spent is
proportional to Power Increase, Efficiency
Improvements, and Reliability; and inversely
proportional to Emissions. It is the old adage that
you can have it fast, or you can have it efficient, or
you can have it reliable, but if you want some of
each you have to spend a bunch more money!
The rule of thumb is about $100 cost for each
horsepower gained. The first example is the
headwork that can be done to increase the breathing
of the engine. There are several areas of the head
that an experienced head builder can smooth or
reduce blockage to increase head flow, but some
surface roughness and velocity is needed to keep the
fuel in suspension and moving to the combustion
chambers. Much of the improvement can be
achieved on the exhaust side, reducing the backpressure
and allowing all the byproducts of
combustion to exit efficiently from the cylinder.
Since the valves are already pretty much at their max
diameters, improvements come from materials, care
in valve installation and customized flow. A good
head can take 6 months (of backlog from a really
good builder) and cost $1,500, but yield 15 additional
horsepower. The aluminum heads shown from
various vendors are more repairable than the cast
iron heads, but hardly suitable to street use, as they
are not efficient until the RPM and air flow of the
engine is much higher than we encounter off the
track. It is also possible to increase air flow by
increasing valve lift by fitting a higher ratio rocker
arm system, but cam duration on the B series is
maxed out at about 270° so this has to be kept in
mind if selecting other than the stock cams which
already have a pretty good 252º of duration. In either
case, the cam should be checked to make sure that
it is developing the lift it is was designed to, and
that the valves are adjusted to the cam maker’s
specifications.
Similarly, there is nothing more matched and suited
to the MG than the SU Carburetor. The sizes are
perfect for the airflow required even in a developed
head and a longer duration cam. The carbs are self
adjusting for fuel requirements and virtually trouble
free. Going to the next larger size of carburetor (for
example from the HS4 with 1-1/2 choke diameter to
the HS6 with a 1-3/4 choke diameter) is actually
detrimental because of the loss of air flow speed as
the area is 1/3 greater. The airflow will slow down
accordingly, making it more difficult to create the
turbulence needed to keep the fuel in suspension or
even picking up the fuel in the first place from the
bridge. Other carburetors, popularized from race
experience often run poorly at idle and upon initial
acceleration in street use and require an
experienced technician with a dynamometer to
properly set up.
If you are building an engine, light, balanced
internal parts are good, and purchasing special rods,
pistons and lifters can reduce the effort the engine
requires to generate its power and also reduce the
pressure on the cam, leading to longer life. Light
isn’t necessarily good at the flywheel however,
where the mass is helpful to provide good take-off
acceleration in street use. Lightened flywheels are
another item best left to the racetrack! A good
compromise, however, is the five bearing MGB
flywheel for the earlier three bearing engines on the
A and B. The mass is concentrated at the rim,
where it does the most good, while being somewhat
lighter than the original.
From an ignition standpoint, John recommends the
Pertronix ignition. He theorizes that the larger
diameter of the magnetic pick-ups provide a more
accurate placement at 90º intervals then the much
smaller thumb-sized cam with its 90º lobes. Engine
power and balance is enhanced when each sparkplug
fires at the exact moment needed rather than a
few degrees early or late. Dynamometer tests show
a gain of several horsepower with this simple
addition over standard points. But save your old
PAGE 7
MINNESOTA MG GROUP APRIL 2011 VOLUME 11 ISSUE 4
points for an emergency. When the Pertronix fail,
they can leave you stranded. Also make sure to
secure the Pertronix wiring inside the distributor
to avoid pinching and shorting the wires, which
could lead to severe ignition wiring problems. And
of course, carry an extra rotor as well. Another neat
piece of equipment that won’t provide more power
but does result in a noticeably smoother engine is
MSD-6 or Multiple Spark Discharge units. The six
times longer duration of sparks not only smoothes
out the engine but it means you can start your car
without the enrichment or choke system engaged!
However, the MSD-6 does require a lot of
electrical power, so if your alternator fails, expect
to only go about 10 miles before you deplete the
battery. Finally, for John’s money, nothing is better
in the MGB/MGA ignition system then basic wires
with wire conductors at the ends (don’t simply fold
over the carbon fibers), and Champion N9Y plugs.
The bottom line is that it does cost money to put
more power at the clutch:
Good Tune $500
Electronic Ignition Trigger $150-$300
Normal Valve and Head work $750
Cylinder Head Improvements $750
Cam and Lifter Improvements $1,200
The rest of the driveline is less complicated. The
four-synchro gearbox with overdrive can be fitted
to any MGB, and is well worth the expense. The
OD box is not difficult to maintain, and offers
advantages over the standard or three-synchro box.
In any case, run 30W non-detergent motor oil in
the gearbox, especially if it is OD equipped. The
drive shaft should be assembled correctly with the
flanges in line, and the u-joints greased and their
nipples in the small recesses in the yoke flanges,
and the entire unit balanced. The rear differential
is bulletproof as long as one keeps the hypoid gear
level to the proper level, and almost nothing can go
wrong and what does is easy to repair with
replacing the thrust washers. Finally, in order of
performance on the ground are heavy wire wheels;
Rostyle wheels; and custom alloy wheels. The
heavier the wheel the more power it takes to get
them turning from a stand still, and the lovely
wires are very heavy!
The costs associated with the rest of the driveline
are:
OD Gearbox $1,500-$2,000
Rebuild and Balance Drive Shaft $150
Wheels and Tires $1,000
Of course these numbers are approximate, and
personal preference plays a part in how much one
is willing to spend on wheels or any other
improvement. The point is, if you’re in your MG
for the long haul, and you are going to rebuild or
replace a significant part of the engine or driveline,
it is a great time to consider going a few steps
beyond standard and investing in some power.
Then again, John also showed us that the simplest
and most effective way to gain power is to bolt on a
supercharger… hey, it’s proven on the
dynamometer! Research and knowing your driving
style will get you the most improvements for your
money.
