MESSAGE
FROM THE DEAN
Professor Allan Walker
Dean
Faculty of Education and
Human Development
Welcome to the Faculty of Education and Human Development. Our faculty holds high
expectations and is committed to the pursuit of excellence in teaching and research, and to
making a real and positive difference in the communities we serve.
Our contributions are guided by a dedication to enriching student learning, lives and career
prospects, and to nurturing professionals who contribute meaningfully to schools and other
human service organizations in Hong Kong and beyond. We aim to prepare tomorrow's leaders
for Hong Kong and the broader region.
We are committed to helping both staff and students explore new horizons and realise their full
potential. We do this by providing opportunities that encourage our rich array of talents to be
brought together in new and exciting ways.
The faculty is made up of six departments and eight centres, housing around 200 academic and
professional staff drawn from around the world. We have internationally recognised expertise in
more traditional education areas - such as curriculum and instruction, educational leadership,
special education and early years education - as well as in psychology and international
education. Our breadth of expertise has allowed us to bring our talents together to establish
new interdisciplinary Areas of Strength in educational neuroscience, language acquisition,
intercultural studies, learning sciences and family studies.
We offer part time degrees, undergraduate, PGDE, masters and doctoral programmes across
a range of areas. We work hard to make all our classes relevant, challenging, innovative and
supportive.
It is important to us that anybody who interacts with the faculty feels welcomed, comfortable and
in touch with what we do and why we do it. If you have any questions at all, or suggestions for
how we can get even better, we'd love to hear from you.
VALUES
AND PRIORITIES
Interwoven Talent
Departments are the primary units of the faculty
and provide everyone an academic home. At the
same time, work across departments is common
and dynamic. Part of our research activity clusters
around key interdisciplinary areas drawn from different
departments. Our programmes, courses and services
maximise talent from across the faculty. We are
recognised internationally in a number of highly focused
interdisciplinary areas.
Innovative Teaching
We draw on our collective talent to refresh existing
courses and propose exciting new opportunities for our
students. We both respond to and shape community
needs. We value and reward innovative teaching
and stay on the cutting edge of new and emerging
knowledge. Good practices are shared and scaled up
within and beyond the faculty. We have expertise in
e-/blended learning.
Simple, Sensible, Safe
What we do throughout the faculty is kept as simple
as possible. Simple does not mean unsophisticated,
but that unnecessary complexity is avoided. Decisions
are based on common sense. Everyone in the faculty
is entitled to a 'safe' workplace, to management and
collegial support, and the opportunity to enjoy and be
excited by their work. We care about our students and
workmates.
Community Integrated
We cannot flourish without the cooperation and
integration of all people and groups integral to our core
work. Different stakeholders are involved in all aspects
of our work. Our partners are integrated sensibly into
our teaching, research and service. Our international
partnerships and presence in these areas are important.
Faculty centres and academies are key to our
community connections.
Visible Research
We excel at winning external competitive research
grants. Other competitive, large- scale funding obtained
through government and community focused groups is
highly valued. The community understands the value
of our research upon their work and lives. We publish
our work in high-quality international journals and other
important venues; we look for ways to increase our
social impact.
INTERNATIONALISATION
Hong Kong is a vibrant, multicultural, globally connected
city. Internationalisation is central to FEHD; we work with
local and international partners to develop and implement
programmes, curricula, teaching and research.
FEHD Partnerships
To develop high-quality research and knowledge
transfer with a network of international partners, FEHD
has agreements with Mainland China and overseas
universities. Our collaborations range from joint research
and academic initiatives to student exchanges and joint
programmes.
Curriculum / Programme
Our internationalised curriculum strengthens our
graduates, giving them the skills, experience and
knowledge of global citizens. The Executive Master of Arts
in International Education Leadership and Change (IELC)
Programme accredited by the International Baccalaureate (IB)
for international leaders of education attracts leaders from
a wide range of international backgrounds and cultures.
Our collaborations enable our undergraduates to pursue
international school careers in both Hong Kong and
abroad.
Student Experience and
Recruitment
We maintain a diverse and integrated student cohort
with international students from a range of countries
and backgrounds. We embed an international,
intercultural dimension within all our curricula and
extra-curricular activities.
Our students travel internationally for exchanges, short
courses, internships and overseas activities with the
support of university and faculty scholarships. We
offer international scholarships to attract high-quality
overseas students who would otherwise be unable to
study with us.
15
Staff Experience
Our international recruitment and partnerships facilitate
international exchanges for faculty / staff, with nearly 400
academic and administrative staff from 14 countries. Our
staff are encouraged to connect and work internationally.
Research and
Knowledge Transfer
Our international collaborations create high-quality
research and knowledge exchanges and engage globally
important issues. We identify international research to
work on collaborations supported by international
funding. Our work strengthens existing research links,
creating greater possibilities for collaboration and
international knowledge transfer.
16
COMMUNITY
ENGAGEMENT
Helping the community is important to us. We are proud that our staff and
students aid those in need. We provide a range of services to local and
international communities. These include:
providing free or low-cost services for the disadvantaged;
advising schools, governments, and international organizations;
acting as editors, editorial board members or reviewers of international
journals; and
serving as adjuncts, visiting and honorary professors in institutions
worldwide.
